- Clint Bowyer cheats by spinning out his car to help MWR team mate Martin Truex Jr get into the 2013 Nascar Chase. Bumping Ryan Newman and Jeff Gordan out of the Chase. Nascar has spanked all involved!

NASCAR really mishandled this. They didn’t have to kick Truex out and add a 13th driver. Just kicking Bowyer and replacing him with Gordon would have been fine
It wasn’t just Clint. MWR as a whole
was involved in this controversy. Ty Norris told Brian Vickers to pit on the restart and in that moment I think everyone knew something was odd. Truex not only couldn’t benefit from this, he legit got screwed by this situation. Heck, he lost his sponsor and eventually left the team.
This race was just a disaster for NASCAR itself. Hell, MWR probably isn’t the only team that cheated. Joey Logano was able to get into the playoffs because Front Row allegedly told David Gilliland to give Logano his spot in the last restart. Not to throw crap at Logano, I doubt that in his case he was as aware of his personal situation as Bowyer was in his own mess, but still, I think Penske and Front Row should have received a harsher penalty. Just my opinion, I’ve only started following NASCAR in 2021, but I’m aware to an extent of the disaster that was the 2013 Federated Auto Parts 400

Lmao I completely forgot he claimed that Jr got into him. I would've almost believed him if he hadn't said that, because you can CLEARLY see Jr did not touch him on the replays. He went one step too far in the lie and made it really obvious he was full of shit.

Sad that Truex was penalized for something that he, as a driver, had no control over. MWR came in as a cheat and went out as a cheat.
It does suck when u realize a good driver is racing for such a unsportsmanlike disrespectful organization, im just glad that he is having much better success now as opposed to then
Yeah Truex did nothing wrong there, but it permanently tarnished his reputation as a result of it.
I feel bad for all the MWR drivers, since they were forced to throw away their chance to win it all.

Completely different situation, and he was fined 25 points for doing it. He was attempting to stay on the lead lap, and was rightly punished.

He knew what was he doing and that team knew what they had at stake. The way Clint was acting that night and in subsequent interviews about it, he was trying to wiggle his way out of it and be the huckster but it didn't work. His conduct with Ricky Craven the day or so after in his interview really showed that he knew what he did, he just never admitted to it.
This is the most Formula 1 thing I've ever seen.

yes, Penske and Front Row Motorsports got away with it unlike Michael Waltrip Racing which git punished because they were guilty as fuck of cheating the points system during the regular season finale. it why we now have the 16 car 4 rounds format with 4 eliminations per round of 3 races in the first 3 round and final 4 1 race finale round where one can win the championship if they win race or finish the highest position of the remaining 4 playoff drivers in the playoffs.
Just remember jr did this at Bristol in 04. Ended up winning i guess at least jr admitted it

Clint is a pathetic excuse for a driver! He should have been kicked out of the Chase that year... But the Chase sucks or many reasons, it leads to this sort of behavior!
You know they probably could have orchestrated it much better than they did of they used much less obvious codewords and Clint could've been better at lying and hiding it

I think every car tries to get every advantage they can. It's called competition. There are a lot of rules to slow down cars , which I don't like. The thrill of auto racing is that it is the most dangerous sport, but now it's like watching a parade for 95% of the race. No one even gets hurt any more, it's like driving down the freeway during rush hour.
He cheats, then he lies... He’s no better than Ryan Braun, Tom Brady, Alex Rodriguez, and/or Kevin Harvick.

If I recall correctly, Nascar let Gordon in on the chase that year, so they actually had a 16 car field. Why are so many people on here crying that Boyer 'screwed Gordon out of a championship'?
Tuesdaysgonewtw Because if Clint didn't spin out, Gordon would have gone in legitimately, because he was next in the points leader board, not Truex. NASCAR let Gordon in the chase, in response to this controversy. So, Clint almost screwed Gordon out of a title opportunity completely
I'm still a fan of Bowyers, but yeah.. Whether he was told to or not i'm sure Bowyer spun on purpose for Truex. Just another case of teams trying to get ahead. Its in the past though and all have survived past the mistake. MWR is gone, Waltrip lost the NAPA sponsorship, Waltrips still with FOX, Truex is dominating the year so far and Bowyer finally landed himself in a decent ride again in the 14 that hopefully he will have better luck next year with. By the way, Gordon DID get included in the chase that year by NASCAR. People are remembering wrong.

I didn't trust Clint Bowyer,when Michael Waltrip put him in his racing team. Clint just never liked Michael Waltrip, Clint screwed Michael Waltrip out of his racing team. I wouldn't have Clint in my racing team in the first place. Michael made the biggest mistake putting Clint in his racing team.

How exactly did he cheat
Through a series of position fixing. For just simply this video, he spun to force Newman to be challenged on the ensuing restart, which did not happen as he lost spots on pit road. This caused situation A where teammate Truex qualified for the Chase for a week.
Can’t respect that move by Clint. Almost as bad as harvick at Dega In 2015. Bringing out a caution to manipulate the championship standings.

Few years ago, but from what I can see (and think), Bowyer might've been completely innocent through this whole thing (And didn't want to cheat in the first place) and tried to ignore that, but then spun. At least, that's what I think.
I remember being at the race when all this happened.

It was actually Ty Norris, the GM of MWR who made the call. He also was serving as crew chief of the #55 this week and made Vickers pit on the restart.
