Problem was that he was going on 34. He should have had some grip on maturity at that point. He wised up a lot after he became a team co-owner/driver excluding the sprint car incident.

DW is still running his mouth in his older age too. His nickname isn't Jaws for nothing. But you can tell that provisional comment jab Tony took at him really hurt him. DW never hid the fact he was miserable those last few years of his career and wished he was more competitive. That was bit of a low-blow but that's what you get for running your mouth about other people. Can't be upset when somebody has the balls to dish it back. The old-skool Nascar way and DW knows that better than anyone.

This one was tough. I remember watching it live on TV and feeling very uncomfortable....You see, Darrell Waltrip was my first favorite driver. I grew up watching racing with my dad- back in the days before cable TV, when "Wild World Of Sports" was the only media outlet for stock car racing. I picked Darrell as a kid- admittedly in equal parts because of his cool "Racy" sounding name, and also because my dad didn't like him because he was "overly aggressive, cocky, and dirty". So I do remember the days when Darrell was the baddest cat on the track. A driver with excellent skill and guile, unafraid and willing to speak his mind (eloquently, with just enough "southern" in his delivery to make it play well to the fan base at large). He kicked ass. A bad guy you loved to hate. Won shit loads of races. Championships. You get it....He was awesome. Then, slowly, over the course of the late 80's and early 90's, Darrell became tamer- both on and off the track. He found Jesus, which I personally think is awesome....but with that, he lost some of his edge. The fact that he suffered a few serious injuries over the same time span accelerated the process of his decline. Then, he made the all-too-common mistake of hanging on too long after his prime had passed. in Darrell's case? Way too long. It was tough for me to watch as a fan. But I stuck with him to the end. Buying the shirts, holding out hope, preaching the past to younger unbelievers....When he retired (finally), I needed a new driver. Tony Stewart was my ridiculously easy choice. Supremely talented, fearless, "bad boy", unapologetic, aggressive, etc.....I think he's one of the best pure drivers ever to race a car. Of any type. Period. But when I saw this interview, it stunned me. Just like it clearly stunned (and hurt) Darrell. Though I remained a Tony fan for the rest of his career, my respect for him dropped a couple of notches after this aired. He took it too far- too personal- and too mean. DW was the Tony Stewart of the late 70's through the mid 80's. And Tony (though his sentiment was absolutely accurate) ripped a legend on live TV. It was unnecessary, and, in my opinion, wrong. In the end, Tony ended up hanging on too long, as well- not as long as DW, and not under the same circumstances (the accident that killed Kevin Ward was just too much for Tony to recover from- and yes, it was an ACCIDENT), but still- the same sadness prevailed as I watched Tony try to just stay on the lead lap every week. Bottom line- both of these guys are immortals, and both raced when NASCAR was still awesome. I hope it's awesome again some day- time will tell......

Russ Martin Wow. I've never heard another person tell my story.lol. Aggressive: Maybe
      Good: The best
      Dirty: No.
Only difference is I went with Kyle Busch in 03 three years later. You say Kevin Ward was an accident. Yes it was. But it could have been avoided. 2 wrongs don't make a right. His hot head is part the reason a life was lost.

    • @ronaldshank7589

I personally wonder if NASCAR ever will get it's edge back. It's become very... sterile. If your engine is even 1/1000ths of an inch too thick-Violation! If one of your crew members doesn't tighten down a lug nut down like it should be-Violation!
What's next? Are they gonna tell the driver "You were only supposed to take 1,000 breaths of fresh air while you were driving today, and you went one breath over the limit-Violation?
Meanwhile, the drivers are seated in these cars that have all of these safety features that earlier NASCAR Drivers didn't have. Seems like, if you accidentally bump somebody, they go almost into a tizzy over a teensy-weensy little bump that doesn't really affect the Aerodynamic aspect of their Car.
A lot of these drivers choose to whine and moan about the least little thing in NASCAR. What do they want next? Somebody to pull 'em out of their Car, and give 'em a diaper change? Maybe after that, they can have their Mommies standing by, so they can grab their precious offspring, stick out a titty for 'em to suck on, get their little tummies full of Breast Milk, burp 'em, and THEN, if... and only IF... that driver feels up to it, they can crawl their butts back into their Car, and drive!!!
I know that I'm going on a tangent here, but I'm SICK of watching NASCAR Drivers have everything basically handed to 'em, only for them to cry, pee, and moan like a bunch of little 2 year olds!
When I first started watching NASCAR, the Drivers fought tooth and nail for everything! Bless their hearts, they got out there, and EARNED everything that they got! They were true MEN! Some of them, bless 'em, DIED doing what they loved to do!
For an example as to what could happen to a NASCAR Driver, look at the way that Russell Phillips died, doing what he loved to do. He was killed in a NASCAR Race in what was quite possibly the absolute WORST ways possible. He was killed when he was caught sideways, on top of another Driver, and the top of his car was literally ripped off. He was basically dismembered, right in his own Car. One of his hands was found impaled on a piece of the fence. His helmet was found near the entrance to Pit Road...with his head in it! That's how this Brave Young Man died.
Look back into the past, to 1968. Don McTavish literally had the front part of his Race Car ripped off. Then, seconds later, as a Car came through the smoke that was off to the left side of Don McTavish's car, to that Driver's sheer horror, he saw Don's car sitting there, right e his path! He didn't even have time to swerve to miss hitting Don...and the sheer force of that accident tore Don McTavish's legs from his body, and sent them tumbling down the Racetrack for at least several hundred feet! Don McTavish was killed doing what he loved to do.
      I'll close with two points.
1:Do you think that, if these two drivers knew for sure, that they were going to meet Death at their respective times, that they would've driven anyway? I personally believe that the answer is yes.
2:Do you think that these two deceased drivers would put up with all of the whining and moaning that a lot of modern-day Drivers do? I believe that the answer to that particular question would be a solid NO!
Have a great day, and Merry Christmas to you, Sir.

They both have three championships, but DW has a Daytona 500 as well as 35 MORE wins than Stewart. Further, regarding the criticism described here, DW had a point. Let's also not forget that, in one of the last races of his career, Stewart took out almost the entire field in an ill-advised last-lap incident at Talladega and which he shrugged off as 'just one of them racin' deals'. Conversely, I think Stewart got royally screwed over in the deal with that asshole kid who got himself run over by Stewart's sprint car. That said, Stewart would enhance his own brand a little more if he would just stop trying to be a smart ass. It's not a good look for him because he just doesn't seem to be able to pull it off.

I like seeing close racing, I like seeing all the drivers walk away year after year. I respect everything that went on in the 70s and 80s, but I don't think we should go back to that.
