I'm a qualified counsellor in England. A contract isn't something that is discussed with client's well by counsellors. I always discuss it by immediately saying it's not a scary contract that's all buisness. According to me Rule 1 is to not call clients a patient. Patients are dependent on your service, a client is someone you help and support them in what they wish to do to improve their wellbeing. Some need more help than others but therapy is only to be guided not advised. Now going back to the contract, the contract is to protect both client and counsellor. Imagine going in to therapy not knowing what happens with what you tell your counsellor. It's important to have that contract in place. Plus just imagine you share something with a therapist who shares it with someone assuming nobody will know who they are talking about, but that middle person may connect the dots and know you and start sharing this personal information about you to the world. You can't take the therapist to court if you do not have a contract that the counsellor has signed to agree to keeping your information confidential. It's such an important part of therapy but sadly many counsellors put it across like business and that's not healthy.
Jokes and laughter aside, the part where Evelyn talked about attachment styles really hit home. Im also a fearful avoidant person and learning to set boundaries and not do violence on yourself, basically learning to live life for yourself on your terms is a struggle!
