In this video tutorial, I will show you how to prepare a grid for an oil painting. Gridding out a reference can help with proportions and line work, making it easier to accurately transfer the image onto your canvas. In this example, I will be gridding out a reference of a woman on a piano. Follow along with me as I demonstrate how to create a grid on your reference image and transfer it onto your canvas. This technique is perfect for both beginners and experienced artists looking to improve their accuracy and proportions in their oil paintings. So grab your supplies and let's get started!
You will need;
- A canvas or canvas board
- Ruler
- A pencil
- A reference of your choosing

Thank you for sharing your tutorials. I am a hobby artist who is attempting oils for the first time. I was looking for the free ones on RUclips to get me started before choosing an online class. I love your video's that I ran across for the first time today! (not sure why the algor's didn't put you in my feed previously?) I'm off to grid my canvas!
