- FNF prez Eddie Muller responds to film noir fan questions fielded by the Foundation's Director of Communications Anne Hockens. In this episode, we discuss classic era noirs that resonate with our current sociopolitical landscapes, Eddie’s involvement with Tab Hunter’s memoir, “Tab Hunter Confidential”, character actors who automatically elevate a film, “Miller’s Crossing”, and more. We wind up with a discussion of which classic noir we would like to see directed by the modern director of our choice. Sorry, folks, no cats this week.

1. Is it entirely up to you or are there others who help to pick the festival’s theme? Does the festival always have a theme?

Can you name other noirs that address criminality that extends beyond the interpersonal? But I'm interested in any film noir that seems to speak to our times, whatever the theme.

4. I just finished “Tab Hunter Confidential” which Eddie wrote with Tab. Since Tab was never in a noir film, how did Eddie get involved in the project? Also, having collaborated with notables myself in writing their book, what was the process like for Eddie?

10. I have a movie fantasy proposal that I think could happen if the stars aligned. Love to know your thoughts and was wondering if you might have one if two of your own.
First: In a Lonely Place directed by Park Chan-wook.
Second: The Maltese Falcon directed by Werner Herzog.

If you don't have MHZ Choice but have a region-free or region 2 DVD player, Babylon Berlin Season 4 is currently available on a UK DVD from Acorn. And on 9/24/24 it'll be out on a US Blu Ray from Kino Lorber. -- The latest news from Germany is that Season 5 is scheduled to go into production this fall. Script is being finalized now. It'll be 8 episodes and set in February 1933 when you-know-who came into power. If I recall correctly the writers have no intention to continue the story past that point.
Mike Mazurki is always a welcome character actor in noir imho. " I,m looking for Velma." Another nominee: Sheldon Leonard.

I also like Babylon Berlin a lot. But the problem with period pieces for us that have a historical knowledge is that you often find some flaw. In Babylon Berlin there are a few examples. For instance, in Berlin in the series you see a lot of cars, but not one horse. They should have thought about that. Horses were common (bringing out milk or beer and other things) in Berlin and other German cities in the 1920s and 1930s.
I enjoyed this year's 25th Hollywood Noir Festival theme: Charlatans. How apt. 😮
Good character actors: Franklin Pangborn, Thelma Ritter, Margaret Hamilton pre-Oz, the old, beer-drinking woman in "Born to Kill". Dozens of them!
I will check out "Babylon Berlin" on Eddie's enthusiastic recommendation. It's got to be better than some of the big, first-run movies out now. I am basically stuck in a rather small town (no car) but with a little Laemmle Theater, thank the gods! This is a famous LA art house chain started 1938. So I watch films there, on YT, some Amazon Prime, & a few DVDs from Library. No streaming services, NO TCM with Eddie Muller hosting! But thankful for these anyway.

Movie Fantasy Proposal: It's worth noting that Park Chan-wook is a fan of In A Lonely Place as the soundtrack for his film, Oldboy (2003) is full of titles named after classic films that inspired him for his own movies. One of those is In A Lonely Place.
Others are The Big Sleep, Kiss Me Deadly, Point Blank, Farewell My Lovely, Breathless, The Searchers, For Whom The Bell Tolls, Cries And Whispers, and even Jailhouse Rock. Park knows his classic cinema.
So while I don't personally want In A Lonely Place to be remade/reinterpreted, as I already think Nicholas Ray made a perfect film with Humphrey Bogart and Gloria Grahame, I will say that if a remake absolutely must be made for some reason or another, I would trust Park Chan-wook with the material far more than most other directors today.
Which character actor can elevate a noir for me.....Jay Adler. He steals every scene from Dick Powell in Cry Danger and from Broderick Crawford in The Mob (plus countless others).

Remakes are like bands playing cover songs! Not a fan...
Can’t stand remakes. Then saw recently noir alley. Eddie Ripping Raft. When He loves Bogart who is beyond awful. Petrified forest he was hilarious and he was not kind to woman. What a letdown. Raft was class and could act so incredibly. Miss the old noir alley.
