I just moved out of Maryland and I miss things like this! The people, the culture, the beautiful scenery. We made this cake with my grandma and ma once a month, but we stopped doing that. This recipe is so similar to the one my family has used for a long time, it warms my heart
Im from DC and PG county. When I was in college at UMCP I met a girl from Smith Island and she was so nice. She took me and a couple of our friends there and it was beautiful. Sometimes as a person of color we hear people say a place is a throwback or traditional and we automatically think Hicks or hillbillies, but not Smith Island it's a place with decent people who aren't caught up in the unnecessary drama of politics. I'm glad I got to go there and I hope it stays the way it is.
I'm from PG County too :) I would like to make my own Smith Island cake one day and visit the island. I think I learned about it via learning about Holland Island.
Correct! The island has its own sound and style with direct roots in colonial old english and the famous "backwards talk". Tangier islanders sound different still. The isolation of the islands has preserved their sound. Typically tho as you move down the shore you get shorter heavier vowels. There is world of linguistic difference between Rock Hall and Snow Hill and you can often place a shore native in his home county with good accuracy if you just listen for few minutes.
I recently watched both of your videos made with the Duncan Hines yellow cake mix and I really want to try to make this cake but the recipe amounts were different. Which one should I try? Thanks.
Thank you for your videos! My ancesters lived on Holland Island, so Smith Island is as close as I can find. Tried to make your cake with the recipe in this video and the batter was very runny and didn't set well (still delicious, though!) Then I watched your other video and noticed the "cup of tap water" was changed to 1/3 C. vegetable oil. That makes more sense. Will try that next time.
Thank you so much for posting this. Just hearing you speak brought back memories of my extended family in Waynesboro and Hagerstown. (My maiden name is Smith)
I’m from the South……North Carolina. My mother was born and raised near Martinsville Virginia. You do not talk funny. Your dialect is a mixture of southern drawl and Virginia brogue…….I think it’s fascinating. My mother used to make a seven layer cake frosted with chocolate icing. I’m thinking it is this cake and we all adored that cake. She is too old now to spend much time in the kitchen she says so soon I will visit your beautiful place and eat all the cake I can hold.
Use the other one! I used this one and the cup of tap water has to be a mistake. It was very runny and didn't set properly. Still tasted delicious, but as soon as I saw the batter I knew the water was a mistake.
I was very surprised that she uses a boxed mix. Also, does she have the Health Dept. do a kitchen inspection in order to make cakes for sale? I know it is the law in many, if not all states. Just wondering.
SolWaid1965 I agree with you. I don't know why pple are so spiteful. 50 million baking videos on RUclips and half of them sell cakes.......y bother this lady video.
With the advent of so much TV regarding baking a lot of states have adopted what is called the "cottage" law. Since she is making cakes for those that order them, it is considered a private contract and the state tries to stay out of that arena. It is the manifestation of "buyer be ware" concept. I live in Texas and just about everyone makes cakes in their own kitchen and sells them to individuals. If they took those cakes and went to say a farmers market and set up a both, that is a different story. At that level, the consumer assumes the cakes are made in a kitchen that has been inspected and the board of health will shut you down and fine you for doing that kind of thing.
The actual cakes they bake & sell are done in a commercial kitchen with a certificate from the health department sooo simmer down you mainland cake police 👮 police 🚔🍰 its alllllllllll good 👍
This is not a typical Eastern Shore accent--I am from Dorchester County, MD, smack in the middle of the Delmarva Peninsula, and our accent is NOTHING like this.
If you can’t hear anybody talk like this on the eastern shore/Delmarva then I gotta question your hearing lol. People on Tangier and Smith Island say a couple words slightly different than the mainland Delmarva, but for the most part it is the same accent.
The closer you get to crisfield smith/smith island the more of this accent you hear. It’s diluted a bit when you get to maybe Salisbury but you can still hear the accent. Maybe y’all are too close to the city 🤭
They compete in cake making and in the 2000’s their primary social functions still revolve around attending church based functions. Bottom line: there is not much to do on the island......so if you think she just gave you her actual recipe (the one thing she can occupy her mind with and take pride in to give her life meaning) your incredibly naive! She probably intentionally told you incorrect measurements for butter ext.... People....her cake is her life she ain’t gonna give that up to the masses on some RUclips channel...please
Did you watch the whole video? She admits that she didn't invent this. Each baker has their own twist on the product. I give her credit for sharing her personal recipe and her passion for her home.

This lady is awesome!
Love this video, and your humility. Thank you for sharing!
These are my people right here! My grandmother sounds like this. All my dads side of the family do! :)
I'd love to meet this lady!
I love Smith island cake! And Lord this lady has an Eastern Shore accent!
I wonder if you can bake this in 1 or 2 pans and just cut them to however many layers you need?
That's a good Eastern Shore accent right there. Proud to be part of MD's eastern shore!
lovely woman. great tradition.
My favorite is the Banana!! Yum!!
I love Smith island people stay there years ago

Very interesting
Seems like it would be easier to just layer 12 huge pancakes. No need for all those pans, and the texture wouldn't be that different.
The recipe you gave on this video is different than the other YT video you made.
I noticed that too. I don't know which recipe to use.
Use the other one! I used this one and the cup of tap water has to be a mistake. It was very runny and didn't set properly. Still tasted delicious, but as soon as I saw the batter I knew the water was a mistake.

You sure know how to ruin a nice story.

novaguy1968 true. I get the feeling that the people of these little islands have their own dialect
I am from doco as well
They do.

She had me till she said she used a cake mix:(
The credit for these cakes is not going where credit is due. We know who the original maker is.
Who is the original maker Trudy?
venturegirl 2 Trudy wrote this on another video but never tells who.

Oof y’all I live in chrisfeild
