- Yep you heard right! im building a 2 metre tall 4 metre wide #synthesizer with 1000 oscillators #mega #drone, to answer the age old question! how many is too many!
Ghostix! www.ghostix-lab...
not at all possible without the amazing support on patreon thankyou! this project is costing nearly 3 months worth of it so thanks for helping to make it possible! im posting videos daily over there at the moment! all different kinds from technical to other updates. lots happening! plus you'd get a name on a knob!

would have been cool to bring this to #superbooth! ohwell itll be there 2021haha.
the amazing Ghostix labors! www.ghostix-labors.de/
im putting all of my patreons names in sharpie on each single knob! i still have a fair few knobs that need names!
if you'd like your name on a knob! think about supporting these projects over on my patreon it helps to make these big things and im working on something right now that will make it possible for people to be able to come and play on them! info over there :www.patreon.com/lookmumnocomputer
Are you planning to make a video of basic electronics concepts someday? I would love to understand your passion more deeply and I think you seem like an incredible teacher
wait, if 10 oscillators is 20 x 40 cm, and you need 100 of those modules, 20*100 = 2000 and 40*100 = 4000. Then the final machine is gonna be 40 metres by 20 metres, and not 4 by 2 meters, right?
@@ondeangel1998 i do here and there! i try my hardest to. i touch a lot more on the gritty on the other channel look mum no computer but more seriousish! and my patreon doing vlogs each day about a number of different things, circuits and what not. a lot drier and longer
@@wrraf i need 100 of these laid out in a 10x10 grid. so it wont be 100x100 that would make it a 100,000 oscillator megadrone, which may very well be possible! but lets take it in steps :D
This is really coming together. What a spectacle! Lookin forward to Daydreamer!
totally sounds like a THX demo. cant wait to see the full 2x4m machine
doesnt it just!!! proper happy :"D
The audience is definitely listening!
That's it!
I immediately thought the same, which is EPIC!
That sounded so cool
Right at the 7min mark when it started breaking down I wasnt sure if the THX logo was about to appear or if the opening shot of a horror movie was playing in the other room.
I was going to comment roughly the same message
Yea! That's exactly what it sounds like.
The audience is listening.
Thats what he's taliking about when he says "deep note." Deep Note is the actual name of that sound that THX made and uses. it is a really neat story. Here are some links about deep note and how it was created:

This!
Love at first sight, and that is only seeing the plan
"You can go from chaos to uniformality in a matter of twisty knobbies."
Sounds like something straight out of Clockwork Orange.
Also, half the amount of soldering 1,000 is still five times the amount of soldering 100. So, either way, there's some crazy amount of work going into this.
You heard it here first: give this man enough money and he may just write your name on his knob.
Probably one of the last places you'd expect to give you that offer...
Hahahahaha
It's super idea.. Imagine later playing with it.. Tweek Bob down a little.. pick that Jenny up a notch.. oh oh oh here comes Fat saw Johnny..
The Kilo Drone
nice
Man. beat me to it. Cheers!
Yep, this is the one. That's the name.
Kilodrome
Can’t wait for Behringer to clone this in 2040.
YA IN MICRO SIZE!
PADSynth in ZynAddSubFX does pretty much this already. Yey for open source soft-synths!
(For micro-size, Zynthian is a rack synth that'll run ZynAddSubFX and various soft synths on a RaspberryPi based module. Worth a look I suppose.)
I'm so glad I stumbled across Sam. Love the Zibra music too.
Personally, this is the exact kind of project I like to see when I offer Patreon support. I think it will be really neat and fun!
right! I've never been so happy to have my name on a knob :P
Wow Sam! The sound is amazing!!
I have the Picture in my head of Marty Mc Fly when he shreds on his guitar and the big Speaker blow him across the room !! I love your Ideas
I love the richness of the sound produced by these oscillators. The "imperfections" in the circuitry give us all those wonderful harmonics :-)
How good is this bloke? Raw and knowledgeable.
Amazing how simplicity can be made very powerful and creative.
If you dont intend on keeping the KiloKnob in the long run, you could sell off the 10-knobs panels individually after you're explored the thing.
It's like Pokémon, someone would wanna collect them all haha
This is "bigger and better" than even Zeppelin or The Who could have pulled off.
Your excitement is so contagious and intoxicating dear brother!!!!
i tried making one of these buzzers today! after 2 (failed) attempts i had an fun buzz, although for some reason the led didn't do anything and the bass sounded nothing like it did in the video. maybe I shouldn't run it directly into my audio interface? I'm still happy about the outcome regardless since it was also my first time soldering anything! This project you're starting now looks incredible, I can't wait to see (and hear) the outcome.
That's already awesome.
Two knobs per oscillator... you're gonna run the world out of potentiometers with that thing. xD
It's so slim you can made it into a wall! Imagine just a WALL of synth. Not just some cases on wall, but literally wall finishing made of synths
Aside from the THX comparisons, I gander you could make a dope 80s style horror theme. Mainly something like Wendy Carlos's (aka Walter Carlos) work on The Shining.
The etching looks sooooo much better the sharpie I love it!!!
the sound of the 20 is allready most amazing
Ha, I've been called a knob before, but never had my name written on one. You're my favorite Patreon Sam. Just the coolest projects.
Hi, glad to see you resurected the project. K.I.S.S. principle, Keep It Simple Stupid, plus repetition works. My first build was an18 Oscillator "Delia Device" using 6 banks of 3 oscillator, each bank had a different capacitor value. I used the 9v version, so it needs lots of pre-amping, a hell of a lot, so it picks up a lot of noise, in a lo-fi way, each bay has a master frequency knob which affects other parameters, unintendedly. It has lots of other great unintended glitch's. I would never have tried without your excellent channel, especially something as complex. I occaisionally de-bug a bit more, as I gain more knowledge. But I want to leave it unpredictable. Keep up the good work.
Love the new bunker!
"...pretty much just me, sitting, just swearing to myself, very late at night..." That sounds like me writing code.
1000 oscillators is admirable but I'd have gone for 808 😀
I'd have gone for 101 ;oi
420
or 909 :) ask roland....
Sam, you are a madman! Keep it up!!
I'd absolutely buy two of the frontplates and circuit boards to build my own ones.
You should consider selling those, everyone can easily buy their own parts, so you'd have no hassle putting to get her diy kits, only slam frontplate and board in a package and ship it 😁
I just now realized you ship you other modules like that.
Again, I'll instantly order two as soon as they are available.
Can’t wait to hear 1000.
I'm so excited for this. The super simple oscillator is what got me into making my own synths!
absolutely Bananas, a 10 voice synth with 100 OSC pr. voice haha... straight to the book of records :)
Petition to get LMNC to stop teasing us and finally produce some sweet sweet retrowave/ synthwave/ whatevermagiggwave
This sounds like the THX intro! Great video!
hefty drone, even for this little peace. Great work.
Hey Sam! Absolutely love your channel mate, probably one of my favourites of all time! Would love to see some videos on projects that we could all do at home, keep isolation ticking along and such!
Great bladerunner sounds
Make them tiny with multiturn trim pots and tune each module to q cord. Then you can tune cords for each key, like the old spinnet/air organ cheater cord buttons.
Also, a bandpass filter may be more useful.
If nothing else, set up some with High pass, some band pass, some low pass. Then you can span them across the frequency spectrum.
A few thoughts...
"way back in 2017". Just three years ago. Ah! What it is to be young! Nice video.
I think you're going to hit the law of diminishing returns way before 1k oscillators. What might offset that is to run the oscillators in banks of 100, run them through 10 separate amplifiers hooked up to 10 separate speakers. Positioned correctly you could create some interesting dynamics as the drones interact in physical space (bit like moray patterns).
That's just cool, hands down!
Maybe an idea for the next big project: SMD components and an assembly house. If you only let them solder on the SMD components and not through hole components like pots, it's not that expensive you might even break even compaired to all throughhole and self assembly, with SMD components being cheaper. And more importantly safe you a massive amount of time, because let's face it, soldering 1 or 2 prototypes is fun, soldering a 1000 isn't.
And a random neat prototyping fact: 0805 smd components are perfectly sized to solder between the pads of a prefboard/stripboard.
7:00 - the audience is listening!
You are an amazing fellow. Love your work.
THX.
You understood.
Awesome! also nice to know that there is my name written on one of the knobs! I really apresciate your Content!
Make the mega drone into a cube!!! You could even hang it up from one of the corners.
I think it's going to sound like white noise with enough oscillators.
White noise? Pink noise? Grey noise? You decide!
That's my thought too. In the same way a human voice on it's own sounds fine, but when in a football crowd, it's just white noise.
@@crunchyfrog555 not really, and depends on many factors....a huge fotball crowd doesent SING -- they shout all in different pitches, thats why we hear it as "noice" - have you ever heard a big choir in a cathredral?, they are ceartinly not heard as "wite noise" all singing in the same pitch too, i think Sams big synth could sound real nice but LOUD!! ;D
@@ThePsylopAt (sorry for this) perhaps he might even find the Brown Note?
@@MrKeys57 totally agreeing... the behavior of the sound should follow the adjusted oscillators. a nice full sound is also possible like a maniac noise...
Another single? Hell yeah!
Can't wait for the next part 😄
This awesome looking project looks and sounds a lot like an big and huge additive synthesis synthesizer....
Cheers
Daniel of D.S. (a swedish synthrock / electro-industrial project)
In case you didn't, you should and need to add a 10uF / 4uF7 capacitor on the VCO output to AC "un"couple them and bus them together and mix it.
to prevent that one VCO bugs the other.
You are so funny and happy guy dude !! I admire your ability and talent for electronics and music !!!
Well I think that sounds awesome!!
This is really quite awesome.
Outlander, your castle is massive!
Not sure I'm your biggest fan, but I'm at least a XXL size fan. You are fantastic !
I have some electronics background. So I understand more than some. I think you have the potential to design and build the perfect oscillator. You just need to calm down and think about it. I see great potential in you. Good luck and have fun.
The sound of the first module had my jaw drop to the floor
You're absolutely MAD and CRAZY and at the same time AMAZING and SUPER... WOW...
hey, I'd totally buy a 10-osc bank to play around with...
you can built one

yeah guy, i was there at the show in schwerin. awesome! greatings from there. hopefully u come back and give us another trip! 🤖
Nice sounds!!
you should tour the world with this and the biggest soundsystem
when you did that thing... chills man
And another fun aspect of the reverse avalanche is temperature even matters. Like we are talking the temperature differential from touching it with your finger.
Indeed!
Totally loving the project! Given that one of the worlds largest organs has over 33,000 pipes (Boardwalk Hall Auditorium Organ, each pipe is pretty much a single oscillator), there might need to be a followup. ;-)
Gonna be rad!! RGB LEDs that will change based on pitch or something perhaps?
It would awesome to build a tap tempo that assign an output to each of the ocillator randomly
the feeling to be in a room with a speaker in every direction, where every beat of the tempo the sound is different and the same at the same time, that feeling would be overwelmingly awesome^^
I would highly recommend building a couple rigs that hold all of the components that need to be soldered on in place so you can just go down the line and solder them. A two man team would speed this up a lot, one placing the components in a second rig and the other soldering. You'll also really want a solder gun with a solder wire feed if you don't already have one
(they save so much time and you can hold components while soldering)
Damn this is going to be pretty darn cool, good luck my man and I hope to be able to support you!
The Millennium Oscillator... where can I get mine?
in stores july. rrp £2.50
@@LOOKMUMNOCOMPUTER You are the man! Built one of these oscillators and it's sound is so unique, I love it. Someone could build a super complex synth based around that oscillator and it would be awesome.
look mum, no pressure!
2300 pots and knobs. 200 jacks. 100 panels. Oscillator components 100 times. I don't even imagine how much this costed.
7:04 serious smiles can’t wait sounds amazing already. There’s your tour just do that for a couple of hours. I’d be happy!
Freakin AWESOME .. I want one..
THX is coming and claiming this ;)
Ah man, this is just nuts!!! A great use for all the bulk resistors you got
Heck, I wanna build one
6:52 Seems like your oscillator is THX Certified
yay new single coming out!
On a bit of a digression, you gave me an idea for something interesting music folk could do over voice chat, that involves one person starting a tune from scratch, possibly timed. Then they would send it/stream it to another person who would take that skeleton and add some meat, and then it would continue on to another person who adds their own stylized tweaks, and so on. Like a conveyer belt, building some magical piece of sound ambrosia live in like a half hour. You could even do a real-time scenerio of a revolving piece of music that you have like 20 seconds to spice up before it's out of your hands and on to the next person. I dunno, something to do. Maybe unfeasible. Might just end up like that I Love Lucy episode.
Congrats....
It's probably going to end up sounding like a beehive scratching its collective arse!
With that number of oscillators, and without any form of temperature compensation, you going to have major problems with drift simply due to the convection currents that will be circulating in the case. Although it is possible that you might be able to ease the problem somewhat if you try to match the transistors into batches for each bank so that they detune at roughly the same rate.
O shitt, this is gona be amazing!
Open the wormhole!! 😀
You rule my dude 💯
It really is very much like the deep note. Awesome!
This looks amazing! Have you ever thought about making PCB's with surface mount components? PCB manufacturers can solder these for you in reflow ovens. Or is this more of an identity thing? I can even help you out with some things if you would want it as I'm an Electrical Engineer (less than a year, but anyway).
Hey! I have dabbled with surface mount. However I’ve never really liked the way it looks. It looks far too computery. I’d like to think my machines live in a present day where people liked through hole 😂. It just looks nicer and bigger. And this machine is more of an art piece hence the choice for through hole. Trust me it did run past my mind. I have a half finished surface mount pcb for this which I ditched :)
Hey be careful, when you finally get it up and running you’re going to get a call from the physicists at CERN - they’re want to buy it off you to replace their space time warping universe disruptor! 😂👍🏻
I remember years ago I got disciplined at work for 'damage to company property' because I cut the lower legs off of an old pair of overalls I had so I could ride to work in them. I obviously changed into the new overalls when I got to work. I thought nothing of it; my bosses thought otherwise. Anyway, I never thought it would become *fashion* one day.
To quote Nick Lowe, “One’s too many (and a hundred ain’t enough)”
Nicest panel art on any of of you projects
AWESOME and Expensive
Can't wait to buy the pcb
Good. Do it. That's why I'm here.
use 10 turn geared knobs for finer control if your budget allows.
You reinvented the THX sound.
Right. I'm in.
That is awesome! Looks very cool. and the design sounds amazing! I think it will sound massive, high voltage synth. Daydreamer might be one of my favorite tracks, can not wait to hear the final rendering. :D
Different versions of that song are all over haha no idea how thisnrecording is gunna hold up but who knows!
@@LOOKMUMNOCOMPUTER Think it got the kind of feel to it that I enjoy alot in music, so unless it got a bunch out of tune violins or something I will enjoy the tune. Just ordered up parts for the ADSR by the way, finely getting on the Kosmo train. :)
Yet another sick intro vid. Can't wait to see the finished product. Keep up the awesome work!
This is AWESOME 😃
That sounds epic bro
This sounds like a perfect crowdsource project. especially during covid. Have you thought about releasing a kit/parts-list or sth. and then have people solder them, paint them up with their unique flair and send them in for Voltroning? I'm guessing the cost for one bank is semi manageable and as a cool first solder project with some community building, this could work wonders!
I'm in! That would be fucking amazing.
