  • After China, India will shake the world. India, the next economic superpower to challenge the world.
    #india #century #newindia #chinaandindia
You might hear me with some difficulties to breathe during this video. I apologise for this, but it is the result of me catching covid-19 during my recent trip to India. I did not want to delay the video on my regular Pascal's China Lens and hope it is not disturbing too much. You can put the English subtitles on if that helps
    TIMESTAMPS
00:00 Can India become the next tiger superpower?
01:55 How did I get insights about India during my trip to Mumbai? Conflicting images about India
04:28 How far behind China is India? 30 years when looking at social mobility. 20 years behind when looking at infrastructure. 10 years behind when looking at businesses and entrepreneurship. Not much behind when looking at digital infrastructure
06:25 The lost decade from 2008 to 2018 and the new decade now, where it could become the century of India
07:36 Top down opportunities for India. The sky is the limit.
07:56 Diversity of India: a blessing or a curse? It probably kept India from growing faster, but now that is reversing. India is now using its diversity to attract investment depending on the region.
10:28 The biggest opportunity is the 1.4 billion new consumers, many going into the middle class.
11:30 This is India's decade. India will grow at over 6% this decade and overtake U.S in purchasing power parity by building the biggest middle class in the world
12:58 India's digital future is leading the way for the world together with China. Mobile only transformation, Universal IDs, digital platforms, 5G, software manufacturing,...
14:30 India's sustainable future in terms of environment is mostly driven by entrepreneurs and businesses, more than the government.
16:14 Bottom-Up change of society in India. Much of business is created by family business that want to make others around then successful which reflects on their success.
17:59 The future of India is being made by entrepreneurship. The China plus one strategy is attracting investment from the world away from China into India, mainly because of the link of entrepreneurs with the West.
20:00 Indian leadership has a lot to do with the common purpose of the founders that reflects the mission of the Indian businesses.
21:00 India is the land of dreams where Indian entrepreneurs have bigger dreams than many Chinese entrepreneurs. That is reflected in the 3rd eye and unknown energy that they trust in.
22:30 India is surfing the waves. In the West, in Silicon Valley, most innovators surf blue oceans, which means be unique and create a new market. In China, most innovators prefer to target red oceans, aiming to survive and be successful in a market that is existing, not new. Red Oceans is more for large scale markets, blue oceans is more for small markets or global markets.
25:22 The purple ocean of India. India has found a combination with being unique and create something new with leveraging scale and large existing markets.
26:18 Light at the end of the tunnel for India is now. Many unused human resources are now being included in contributing to value on labor. The inefficiency is also being tackled.
27:00 India's biggest problem from last decades was democracy. Under the Modi government, many of the political polarisation from before his administration faded away. This allows India now to grow faster, because the fragmentation of India due to politics is changing for the better.
28:28 India needs 4 big miracles. Infrastructure is the biggest miracle India still needs. Making Indian business larger business is important for India to grow as a country in a more efficient way. The biggest problem is raising productivity level of Indian labor force. Finally, India needs to start making more own choices instead of being an extension of the West as they are mostly with their software world.
31:00 Can we trust India? We do not ask that question as the West seems to trust India. Once India becomes another superpower, India will want to become the next India, not the next China, not the next great Western ally.

If it takes complete control of the india ocean, it can become a regional power. But insists on too much control over a population with too many differences. Instead of needing the approval of like 81 agencies to start businesses, they should focus on the quality of goods and most importantly food. Honestly, a more decentralized approach may do wonders for them or they could just get rid of democracy and go full control. Too much in the middle seems like a barrier stopping India

Guess many Indians do as you described and I even have some good, smart and humble Indian friends. But when reading the comments pertaining to China, just as many or perhaps even more seem to be otherwise. Not bcoz China has done something bad to its people or country but bcoz of Indian media. Do we vote to change for the betterment or real positive outcomes or just for the sake of voting but nothing change. Can't we accept China being a long millennium and "Continuous Civilisation Nation" with its own ways and characteristics. It's ain't an exaggeration that China has done an impressive, rapid and unbelievable feats in rebuilding an nation. As some scholars even s quoted their governance legitimacy is based on their ability to lift its people living standard, advancement, adoption of science and technology, and modernisation of the whole country but just not by votes alone. It's that a crime or a violation of humanity except differences in politics or ways. Again the freedom slogan which we preach often.
As for India's development, it's a blessing that it has finally arrived as it had been long overdue due to their slow start, diversity, customs, "democracy" and political environments. Guess Indians should know them better. However, there are many negativism in India unfounded in China too. As heard from a forum, India has adapted blindly and proudly the adverse part of democracy too, incondusive of India's political, cultural or tradition environments. For instance, general level of education, corruption, caste systems, and history of an united India (an outcome of British colonial past) of today.

Toshiba, Japan, Thomson, France, and Arrow jet fighter planes, Canada. You must remember the US will never allow any country to surpass it. To do so, you are inviting the US to use their bigger hammer to hammer you on your heads. See what happens to Huawei!

Thanks Mr. Pascal. I am out of my country India for many years. I am so glad to see your input about India and its future. I am so glad people like you and others have to say so many nice and encouraging things about our country. We have come long way and we hope to achieve many things not to prove anything to world but for benefits of our people. After years of struggle at last we are on path to better economy, development and better life for our people. We wish to remain humble and grateful to all countries and their people for their kindness and contribution for the progress we have seen in our country. We as nation are very kind, caring and loving people. India is changing for long time and now we see the difference. Our people are very honest, peaceful, intelligent and hard working.I hope not only we contribute to the prosperity and peace of our country but also share our growth with the rest of world. Web are not out to conquer or prove anything but to be part of happy world. DR. J. Mehta

It feels like India can admit they are inferior to west but never want to admit they are inferior to China and will make up any lie and disparage China's success. Just look at any Chinese video on success, you will see comment like China can only copy, steal, cheat, it will break down in a week, it's a debt trap, china is lying, they can't be believed, etc etc. too many excuses and denial of reality. As an Indian I have to agree with everything you said.
Democracy as a hurdle: I felt the same, say, 10 years ago when I see development projects of national importance got stalled just for petty politics. India had series of coalition government then. But on hindsight I would say to my countrymen that we shouldn't treat it as lost decades, because that was part of maturing of our democratic process. It was part of the learning process of the voters of how to vote and for whom to vote. Voters have now realised we don't want coalition govt of regional parties, this we can see from the recent voting pattern where voters elect regional parties for the state assembly and national party for the national/central govt. Voters seem to realise bigger national parties have larger vision for the country and have the capacity to carry out that vision.

Once again, a great master class. Thanks Mr. Pascal. I'd like to comment on the perception of many Indians about democracy being a problem for them, considering that once there's many parties and their interests, sometimes not the best interests for the whole country. I completely agree with that, because we've been facing the same here in Latin America influenced overweeningly by the United States. I write from Brazil and can tell you that because of ou weak democratic institutions, we have lost two decades of development and economic growth. We have had 21 years dictatorship funded and planned by the US in the 1960. And after that, when Brazil was growing and developing again under the first and second Lula's terms, once again we have suffered another coup planned in the US against the alignment between Brazil and the BRICS. Now, after restored our democracy last Sunday's we have to face many parties aligned with the US strategy for Latin America trying to prevent Brazil to restore it's partnership with the BRICS and the whole south to project a sovereign and developed way for our country. I wish you could visit Brazil and show here your analysis on my country, specially now that Lula is back!

Brazilians are a wonderful people, in my view!
I think Lula will be good for Brazil in the long run, because if any country has to prosper, it has to be able to carry all the people in that development process. That might make it a slower process (just like happened in India due to its slow-moving democracy), but in the long run it will be much more sustainable, because all the people have been consulted, and been part of that growth process.
I could be wrong, but I think Lula will do a better job of including all Brazilians in its growth story, than Bolsanaro. The risk with not carrying all the people along is that those who are cast aside could some day revolt, and the whole system could come crashing down!

You can put the English subtitles on if that helps.

Pascal, this has been the most candid, in depth look at India, no other video had gone into her complexities, her hybrid model, not a single other person has ever reported that different sectors move at a very different pace, i mean i am very impressed. Indians hate videos where only poverty is shown and some are focusing only on the developed parts but you showed the picture as it is and even gave valid explanations for those stark differences and offered possible solutions. Hence why i agree that India is more like a tiger than an elephant. She is colourful but almost invisible among the grass, sitting in waiting for long periods then suddenly out of the blue, she leaps when she sees the opportunity to grab its destiny. No one knows the direction she came from nor where she might go but there's a method in her madness.

I'm a Singaporean. My wife and kids are of Indian descent. I believe that India will become the supreme and only superpower within the next decade under the unpreceded leader Modi for two reasons. First of all, unlike China which is considered as a threat by every country and contained by the entire west, India receives the blessing of everyone because it has no ambitions of its own. She is the only major power for good and kindness and therefore innately has the moral high ground. Its future progress and development are bound to be unparallel and unstoppable. Secondly, the conflicts between the two existing hegemonies, namely United States and China, are of life and death. Their fight for controlling Taiwan is especially irreconcilable and will eventually lead to a nuclear war between them (probably will involve all the west). After the existing hegemonies nuke each other back to the stone age, India will emerge as the unquestionable power to lead and unit the world. Jai hind!

I think your reasoning is good, but we should also understand that the Chinese authoritarian regime has only two advantages that aligns with rapid development, a stable government and an extreme ideology of nationalism.
India already has extreme nationalism embedded by our movies and culture, and while a stable government has a single agenda they can keep working on (and may seem like an advantage to many), it'll create a saturatory point where it will destroy more than it creates. Look at any country that has a history of an authoritarian regime, each of it grew fast and deadly but had a saturatory point that made it succumb in itself.
