  • Luck Be A Lady, performed by Frank Sinatra at The Sands, with Count Basie's Orchestra. I own no rights, but I really like this song.

RONALD REEKER ah this voice !! When « Strangers in the night » was released I wasn’t even born. In France, he was well-known, even famous, but his music wasn’t play very often on radios. My dear and late father made me discover « the Voice », it was magic ! I can listen to him all day long 😍😍😍 What a singer, what an entertainer !

One thing most people don't know is that the drummer for the Basie Band at this time was Sonny Payne. Just listen to the drums here, and everywhere else on this album, then ask yourself if there is any doubt in your mind that Sonny Payne was Sinatra's single favorite drummer, ever?

Sonny is a true legend. But there was often tension between Frank and Sonny. The "in the right tempo" comment he makes is a direct shot at Sonny's sometimes pushing of the song's speeds. Irv Cottler was probably his favorite drummer seeing they worked together for almost 30 years. But oh my this is a fierce and brilliant song from one of the best live performances of any style!

I was fortunate to see Sinatra three times. Lucky too to have the friendship of Matt Monro, 'Britain's Sinatra'. ( Bond movie From Russia with Love soundtrack and lots of gold records). He told me once, "Anyone who does not like Sinatra has got shit in their ears."

SINATRA - Luck Be A Lady
“We turn now to the score of a picture I was in once, called Guys and Dolls” says Sinatra, to an audience in Las Vegas circa 1966. “It is a song by Frank Loesser - and a story about one guy and a pair of dice.”
There are videos of live performances on early color TV of Sinatra singing the most famous song composed (words & tune) by Frank Loesser. Several such videos at RUclips, with as many as 8 million 'views'.
But fans who own his every recorded version (there are several) agree: the “Sinatra at the Sands” album best captures the magic of Frank at his very best: which is to say, in live performance, with the tightest of jazz bands - the Count Basie Orchestra, arranged and conducted by Quincy Jones.
Playing right this minute on Siriusly Sinatra satellite radio. This version:
Thanks, Fragmaster3000 for sharing. Celebrated this day elsewhere [search] " Great Melody, Great Lyric, Great Rendition, Songwriting Workshop, Harmony Central "

Absolutely Awesome Arranging" Here's an interesting piece of Jazz music history for Sinatra's famous performance of "Luck be a Lady"
Written by Frank Loesser in 1959 for the film Guys & Dolls. Along with this is an interesting bit of song composing history, then arranged By Bill May in 1963 & road show arrangement adapted by Quincy Jones for Frank Sinatra & Count Basie's Live tour and famous
Live Show at the Las Vegas Sands. Sinatra kept this arrangement in his band book and then the final studio recording on his label (the Reprise label) of the original 1963 arrangement version on the Sinatra 65 album.

The Count employed all the hi C trumpets. He turned them loose and Sinatra built on it. then there Q who Sinatra found and got in 1964 who turned his career around with this kind of arranging. Q did it gain with Thriller. Sinatra left Q his gold pinky ring and it still see the light of day.
