They were going to Sri Pada - it's a Buddhist site but a lot of tourists go there just for the hike up the mountain and the sunrise. Not surprised at all to see people playing instruments and singing - this is almost a must-do thing in Sri Lanka when going on long trips. If people don't have proper instruments with them, they will use makeshift instruments or at least just sing in groups. Almost every guy in Sri Lanka seems to be able to play some sort of percussion instrument - they start at school using their desks as drums haha
The best thing about traveling on public transport is that you get to interact with the others ,share the food sometimes and help each other when in need.

I've just been to sri lanka twice so I never got the chance to visit that place, but I've been watching so many RUclips videos about that place. As I gotta know it's totally free you just have to got there and talk to chief monk in that place, You'll be able to get the best cultural and spiritual experience in sri lanka. also you'll be able to try the real sri lankan food. My mom used to teach me about sri lanka when i was a kid. I think that's the place which got everything that she taught me.
