did u just say penta. Fucking Penta, bitch what. no body knows anything about skiing dude it would be a quint cork 1440 not a penta bitch thats not even a thing
JJ Thor it's not a new trick, what you're thinking of is wrong, it is called a quint not a Penta a penta is not a thing that goes single dub triple quad Quint, not penta. You don't know what you're talking about kid
Neither did the guy that invented the rodeo or the drag vape 3 or the lip slide or the 0 spin. all of these tricks have names that just originated out of slang terms that people liked so they became popular. Yes a "quintflip" (notice I never said anything about spinning) would follow the pattern but if you think there is any defined names for never before done tricks you know nothing about the spirit of any extreme sport including skiing. Most ski terms originated from skating and you cant tell me that a gazelle flip (540 flip with 360 sex change) has any logical name pattern.
These tricks are called a LAY FULL FULL and the quad is called A LAY FULL FULL FULL. Penta is fine. Reece, get a clue. it's called FREE skiing not narrow minded trick name directory.
I was in HS with him, we were gymnasts. His father was the head of USA Gymnastics. He was always amazing on the trampoline, (and everything else). Our senior year, ‘75, he went skiing for the first time and caught air off a mogul, and thought, hey I can do a flip like that, and the rest was history.
No offense taken. Frankie was really in his own league back in 1983. He had actually retired from competition at this time, and went back just to do this jump just for this Dick Barrymore film. This was his first time doing the trick on snow. All the best, Mark
i love 3 things about this video 1: "what would you consider a succesful jump" "oh you just gotta put it down thats all there is" 2: how his ass never touched the snow in the slow-mo of his triple back 720 3: how he basically did a quad back 1080 on skis before anyone even started doing park....of course with no style but he did it
I went to HS with Frank, we were both gymnasts. His father was the head of USA gymnastics, so he grew up as a gymnast, he was amazing. In ‘75, our senior year, he went skiing for the first time and caught air off a mogul, and he thought, “hey I can do a flip off a mogul”, and the rest was history. If he would have had the gear and conditions we have now, it would have been amazing to see what he could have done.
Yes, it's real. Frankie came out of retirement just to make this jump for the 1983 Dick Barrymore movie (an annual movie then). I can't find a DVD of that year, but I was able to find this segment in Barrymore's DVD entitled "The Golden Years of Ski Films". This DVD has great classic skiing, including the early reckless years of hotdog skiing (early '70s).
Anders Christensen actually you can see him go off axis from just being perfectly upright he 100% went off axis from that (no he didn't go inverted but he went off axis) but you just couldn't see it because it wasn't completely inverted. Watch it again
Do you see him these days? I haven't seen him since the fall of 1983, when he showed this film at his house. I hear he is a stunt coordinator in the film industry. Mark
They are two different warm-up jumps. Dick Barrymore (the films producer) erred when he said it was slow motion of the same warm-up jump. The jump is real. I knew Frankie then, and went over to his house in the fall of 1983 to watch the film.
I knew Frank and Bruce and a bunch of those guys. Frankie did a back flip out of a helicopter at Snowbird on camera once. He was a really nice guy and we trained at the same place in UT.
Yes, Frankie warmed up with several double-twisting triples.....as you note, the slo-mo was from a different warm-up jump. The reason why the video is "crappy" is because RUclips "de-synced" the audio from the video about a year ago during maintenance" on the site. I uploaded it again, and that version is properly synced. See "more from marksjohnson" on the right side of this page and scroll to "Frankie Bare Triple Quadruple Flip on Skis 1983"-Mark
the split second decision is madness any gymnast/freestyle skier would know that (as i do)- you decide after the first or second somersault- after the third it is too late to 'kick out' and slow your rotation enough to land safely, people that do decide when the commentator said tend to land on their heads.
Lloyd Langois was in Diapers (at best) when Frank Bare Jr invented this sport. Charlie Pond was his coach who invented the technique for Aerialists to do this on Ski's. Canada didn't have the liability like they did in the US, so it died off in the US. The Canadians just picked up on Charlie Ponds methods he pioneered. The true story of American Aerial Acrobatics on Ski's and the follow on success for Canadiens is based on true prodigies like Frank Bare Jr.
George Gividen not at all of you count the degrees in ALL rotations, he did a 2520. Most ever done so far is a 1980. Also this is before slope style was a thing. So I would confidently say probably nobody is gonna do this for a while, especially with grabs. Also grabs would make it safer, meaning he would be tucked more and he would spin faster, leading to a smaller jump and less height.
Over 30 years ago. Balls the size of grapefruits. You go Frank. Thanks for paving the way. Willing to bet if you were 19 years old today, you'd be shoving "Misty 720's with a safety grab D-spin mute grab whatever" right up some of those helmet-wearing new-schooler's asses. And boarders... hah, not even on the map.
Quadruple means "four". Frank combined 4 backflips with three 360 degree rotations of his body in vertical plane. The combination of a flip and a twist has sometimes been called a "mobius flip", and this may be difficult to decipher on first analysis. Altogether, Frank performed a triple twisting quadruple back flip.
Also, this is no cork 'Fake flip', true vertical flips and true horizontal twists. The discipline, and execution demanded of divers but with ski's on. You don't see world class divers getting away with that trash....Frankie was a class act all the way
Glad you noticed that. I was on the high school diving team (brighton High) and we have a top knotch facility (Cottonwood Heights) that we trained on and that is where I met Frank. We did a diving show in the winter in a snow storm on TV c were we dragged a small trampoline up to the top the 10 meter tower and a board across the top rail to jump onto it :) Good old days !
Thanks. You must be correct, as A Bit of Madness" is from 1983, and I saw this segment at Frank's house in the fall of 1983. Frank, Craig Peterson and a few others did some 10 meter diving for the TV show, "Real People".... outside in the winter for effect. I knew that his father "Frank Bare senior" was in the gymnastics hall of fame but had forgotten about him directing the USGF out of his kitchen. Thanks, Mark (I put a better version of this jump at youtubeDOTcom/watch?v=1XNlWAxF3xU
I also remember hearing this stated by Warren Miller in his 1984 or '85 film, but I don't really know how accurate the value quoted (~$10,000 by Miller) was. Mark
Is the audio and video out of sync? If so, click on the "More From: marksjohnson5" button on the right and select "Frankie Bare Triple Quadruple Flip on Skis 1983" for a synced version. Unfortunately, RUclips changed its formatting on Nov. 23 and the audio and video on the above video is no longer synced on some systems! Sorry, Mark
The reason not a single pro can do this today is the size of the jump and the angle of the kick. This jump is way bigger then thoose they use at big air competitions
The newscool just looks more stylish fore most people. But i hope one day we se rotations like this with grabs. That woud combine both and make the most insane tricks. Mean we have quadcorks already this stuff shoud bei possible Like doble backflip 1080 with grabs. Or ist this impossible. Why ist Nobody doing this kind of trix?
You can stop the clip at these times: at 3:28 he is upside down in flip #1, at 3:30 upside down & 1st 360 twist in flip #2, at 3:32 upside down and 2nd twist in flip #3 and 3:34 upside down and 3rd twist in flip #4. This clip is slowed down. In real-time is even harder to see.
RUclips caused it to lose the audio and video syncing during a routine update in Nov 2008. I reuploaded the video in sync. Click the "more from marksjohnson5" and you'll find it there.
@floris09172385 Yes, in part. But I think they worried about things getting out of hand with one upmanship, and wanted contestants to refine their form and tricks in the 3 flip category.
if I remember correctly, Warren Miller wanted him to do this for one of his films, but Frank Bare wanted some outrageous amount of money to do this and Warren Miller said no....
I agree, now style, grab and other stuff are really important, indeed I prefer the new school, but in my opinion you can't compare this kinda of shit (like aerial) with Sammy Carlson's switch triple rodeo or any new trick.. It's a completely different thing..
wtf happened to you skiiers????? THIS WAS IN 1983 nobody is even close to this good anymore... i'll ask again wtf has happened to you skiiers??? slackers!!!
"This isn't an attempt, I'm gonna put my feet down on this triple twisting quad...I'm gonna land it" Pure Stud
another skier said the same thing in this video ruclips.net/video/druWqXZnoeU/видео.html at 1:25 in this one.. look lol
imagine if this guy had all of the newer equipment and technology not to mention funding that skiers have today he could be doing penta flips
did u just say penta. Fucking Penta, bitch what. no body knows anything about skiing dude it would be a quint cork 1440 not a penta bitch thats not even a thing
People make new tricks all the time. Cry about it.

"-Let's try some crazy shit today...and fuck the helmet..."
hahah!
Niklas Villabø i agree so much😂😂
Wow, that slow motion was crazy, you can really tell that he knows control in the air.
I was in HS with him, we were gymnasts. His father was the head of USA Gymnastics. He was always amazing on the trampoline, (and everything else). Our senior year, ‘75, he went skiing for the first time and caught air off a mogul, and thought, hey I can do a flip like that, and the rest was history.

and wacko wells did the first quad cork about a week ago
it wasnt a quad. If you look at the last rotation he doesnt go over his horizontal axis, thus not making it a cork.
Anders Christensen actually you can see him go off axis from just being perfectly upright he 100% went off axis from that (no he didn't go inverted but he went off axis) but you just couldn't see it because it wasn't completely inverted. Watch it again
everyone should favorite this video, this guy is a legend, haha he just knows whats gonna happen and what hes gonna do, mad props frank
You can't compare old schoolers with new schoolers man! It's completly different!
Do you see him these days? I haven't seen him since the fall of 1983, when he showed this film at his house. I hear he is a stunt coordinator in the film industry. Mark
Goggles and no hat was the extreme skier look back in the 80s
It's amazing that this trick was so ahead of its time that he could pull this in games 2021 and win lol it's that amazing
No
This is the fure of x-games, i can see it now :) Just add a quick safety grab somewhere
pukki34 Billy Morgan just did a quad. Your prophecy came true.
haha :) link

Nothing like a great day for a great ski!
Wish I could warm up doing "just" double twisting triple backflips lol
Yes, Frankie warmed up with several double-twisting triples.....as you note, the slo-mo was from a different warm-up jump. -Mark
awesome!!!
Uh, this isn't an attempt.
amazing!
funny moves before the jump!

how tf did this guy do it 30 years ago and today only a handfull of pros can do that
not a single pro can do that today.
it's the helmets.
My thoughts exactly lmao
Pros are doing this with grabs. Oh yeah and STYLE.
George Gividen not at all of you count the degrees in ALL rotations, he did a 2520. Most ever done so far is a 1980. Also this is before slope style was a thing. exproskier because helmets do absolutely nothing.
Well except boarders already beat the skiers to it at the end of 2015 :P
Jack Ganley ah ah , see you in paradise
1 word.
Legend.
man this dude is confident ^^
The Old school !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!111 These guys were sick. Take a look at mogul skiing from the 80's.
That's so fucking great i love this video xD
Outstanding !
amazing!

Itd be a lot cooler ifbitbwasnt called a triple twisty quadruple
Amazing!
what a real hero

this guy's a badass
lmao, these old guys slayed
Yupp, so true. But maybe from another warm-up, but, they should had comment it.

I apologize if I offended you...it was not intentional. I think quad back flip is incredible...

“We are only warming up with double twisting triple back”...
Okie dokie
Imma attempt the hardest trick so far. Do you think you'll need a helmet? Nah I'll be good. 😂😂
sick
Afterbang like a boss!
@floris09172385 Yes, in part. But I think they worried about things getting out of hand with one upmanship, and wanted contestants to refine their form and tricks in the 3 flip category.
Dude... just because it is snow doesnt mean the sun isnt out.
the sun can be extremely hot in those paces aswell.
Oh My God!
if I remember correctly, Warren Miller wanted him to do this for one of his films, but Frank Bare wanted some outrageous amount of money to do this and Warren Miller said no....
