- This film segment is from Dick Barrymore's "The Golden Years of Ski Films". It highlights when skiing began in North America (it was brought here from Europe) and of Hot Dog Skiing. Barrymore appears unaware of the first National Championships of Freestyle Skiing at the Waterville Valley ski area in 1970, but films what he calls the World's first Hot Dog contest on March 10, 1971 at Aspen Colorado. Some skiers featured are Dave Wheeler, Squirrel O'Callahan, Scott Brooksbank, Airborne Eddie Ferguson and Greg Athens.

Watching the Olympics and thinking about my great uncle David Wheeler! He placed second at the first freestyle ski competition in history!! He was an amazing and crazy skier! RIP Uncle Dave you made skiing what it is today!

I watched a movie back in the early 1970s starring Dave Wheeler, I believe. It was called Yahoo, I think. In any case, It was awesome to see the old names like your great uncle. He was one of the greats! I was happy to have been in Sun Valley in 74 and 75. Great times. I wanted to take lessons....

Hysterical retro view of the 1970s with excellent cheesy soundtrack. I love that no one wore a helmet.
I skied Freestyle for Lake Eldora 1977-80. I then skied pro until 1983. Being coached be Eddy Lincoln, Bruce Dinman, Peter "Rabbit" Johnson and getting to ski with Scott Brooksbank, John Clendnnin and some of the early greats was amazing.

I've done Telemark turns on wooden skis myself at age 12 down bump tracks and off piste and whatever. Fun to watch though

I KNOW...that is how I was brought up in the 70's and am fiercely competitive still today cause of all my near death experiences and super fast omg moments all them years ago...Today I'm super confident on my K2's and enjoy em much thanks to my latter years!

So it was 1971 but clearly the buzz at the event was that it was THE first.
I think Warren Miller had footage from that years movie of me bleeding when my ski cut my head in the qualifier. (First Blood lol)
And yes the crowd went wild so I got to advance!
There was so much snow coming down that they had to postpone the finals one day. (So it was definitely way before March in New England.) Took over a decade to make it to my recommended but it sure brings back memories . Thanks.
That's awesome that you were in it Bob! Yes, I've looked for available footage of that competition but haven't been able to find it. I think Wayne (Wong) managed to get to that one too. As I stated in the info at the top, Dick Barrymore appears unaware of that the Waterville Valley meet in 1970.
@@marksjohnson5 The Mantra of that Waterville Valley event was to "Ski the Wong Way" with the spin offs of that... "When you did it right you did it Wong" etc. lol
My brother Steve who was a member of the PSIA USA Demonstration team competed in the pro division and was top ten finisher. I was told by a friend they had seen footage of my bleeding face in that seasons ski movie so focus on clips by the big hitter film makers of 71

Two aspects are awesome - how far we have moved since the early days of this sport, and how amazingly instinctive some skiers were technically even back then!
It's so crazy to actually see how some sports and competitions were started.

Watching this and watching Franz Klammer’s gold medal downhill run in 1976……..and I’ve got to say that these guys and the skis they used back then, makes them far and away the best skiers I’ve ever seen.
And then Candide Thovex descended to earth from heaven to show the humanity what freestyle skiing is about. Amen.

You just know those hot dogger have their bindings tightened all the way. Seeing some of those “recoveries” make me cringe as I sympathize with the knees taking those forces.

I will never forget attempting my first Helicopter in ‘78 and only getting three- quarters of the way around….ended up going through one of those old light wood fences…😂 . The days of Olin skis, Scott & Hanson boots. 😉

Jackmerius Tacktheritrix No. Barrymore made many movies in europe and knew and stated in those that skiing in the U.S. was brought over from there. The reason the U.S. is the focus here is because that is where freestyle skiing began.

Of course, skis have been around for 5,000 years. A Norwegian king was saved by skiers in 1206. It didn't begin in North America until the mid-1800s as Dick Barrymore correctly states.

I loved Squirrel. Fine guy, totally unique freestyler, the outrigger-through-the-steep-bumps-guy....I'll never forget him. He and. Hunter Eng should both be in th H.o.F.

The first "World Professional Freestyle Championship" was held at Waterville Valley, NH in 1973, Wayne Wong won it. Other notables from the Waterville Valley area were George Askevold and Floyd Wilkie. I was there. There were no rules, just a panel of three judges giving scores. The cool thing about the scoring was "Extra points given for wicked cool recoveries"

I'm replying to your seven year old comment! I was at that competition with my dad as spectators.. I remember Wayne Wong receiving a Chevy Vega as his winning prize.
I was there and it was an awesome experience. Did not compete though - had just gotten new skis and hadn't broken them in yet.

This makes me want to go back in time and hand these lads a couple modern skis. I wonder if they would instantly be able to absolutely rip on them, or if they are so different than what they are used to that it would be like learning to ski all over again…
They would pick it up… but it’s sufficiently different that they would have to learn all new skills.
It’s easier to go backwards because you can still ski like this on modern skis. But you can’t carve on older skis
@@tainicon4639 Bullshit you couldn't carve on older skis. Did hotdogging back in the 70's/80's on Olin Mark IV Comp IV in 190 length and carved like nobody's business. It's all in how you set up the skis - did my own tuning. They had a bit of an upturn in the tail (not much). Modern mogul skiing like practiced by competitive skiers is nothing more than a slalom race without gates. WAY too fast. On seeded moguls as well .
Only reason I don't ski anymore is extensive knee damage.

I remember watching Hot Dog skiing as it was born in the '70's. I'm surprised no mention of my hero at the time Wayne Wong. Definately the coolest Hot Dogger of the time.

In our language the "gren" or competition is called "kulekjøring" (bump "driving") originally, before the English denomination became more common (due to practicality I guess).
"Fristil" aka "fri stil" or "free style" is naturally pointing to "driving" /stå på ski /skiing downhill without being confined to proper Telemark turns (or slalom for that matter)...
English is weird sometimes, feels like the words have no meaning behind them anymore.
Of course SebSk, skis have been around for 5,000 years. A Norwegian (baby) king was saved by skiers in 1206. It didn't begin in North America until the mid-1800s as Dick Barrymore (the film's narrator) correctly states. This movie is about what we called hotdogging in the late '60s and early '70s. Skiing Moguls became a challenge, then a game, and many skiers became good at it. My friends from Europe at that time, said that ski resorts in Europe plowed and leveled the moguls every night. Thus, many European skiers came over to U.S. to practice skiing the "bumps" (of course the great ski racers such as Jean-Claude Killy, Stein Erickson and Pepi Stiegler could ski anything well). It didn't become an Olympic Sport until relatively recently, in 1992.

wow that is awesome to watch scott brooksbank. I hang out with his kids and board with his kids all the time. See so many rad photos and awards in their house...yet to get to see video of him from the past. He slayed some crazy mogels up at the canyons the other winter on a family ski day. His kid stowe is a rockin' skier as well, maybe he will take after his dad.

I was a ski bum in Lake Louise in the early 90's and I was hated on for doing tricks because powder skiing and back country was the thing.
Basically, there were two types of freestyle skiers then: those in the backseat, and those in the trunk. Sheesh!

It was fun being a part of it from the early 70's to the late 70's as a competitor and to early 2000's as a FIS A judge.
Would be great to see mogul competitions return to their roots by competing on ungroomed slopes.

BTW, pretty sure the fantastic run by Eddie Ferguson was on Look Ma in Vail. Notice the few perfectly smooth turns at the end (with old style skis no less)?

Anyone remember the Lincoln roll ? And how Midas muffler backed some of the early freestyle skiers ? My oldest brother used to wear a midas muffler scarf as he did his best to imitate those early freestyle skiers while in his Scott superhots boots and on his blue Olins Mark3s and ballet skis !!!
