    Hi everyone. One of the most common replies I've seen to this video is "But the Creed doesn't exist yet, so Bayek doesn't have to follow the tenets!".
    Here is my reply (which I posted in another comment as well): "My point is that if Bayek is to write the Creed (which I argue he should if the game covers the origins of the Brotherhood), the first and second tenets and the Brotherhood's philosophy towards crowds have to come from _somewhere_. In other words, it doesn't really make sense for Bayek to dictate that Assassins "Hide in plain sight" if he himself has not been practicing that beforehand."

    • @trustymccoolguy4259
      @trustymccoolguy4259 7 лет назад

      and it's a pretty easy thing for bayek to figure out himself, "dress up and pretend you are a civilian"

    • @ObiWanShinobiSon
      @ObiWanShinobiSon 7 лет назад

      Loomer maybe Bayek figures this technique into his teachings during endgame scenes?

    • @SonakaG
      @SonakaG 7 лет назад

      Maybe later on, one of his targets goes into a place hard to get into, so bayek covers himself in rags, to camouflage with the dead, probably pyramid, and he then realizes this is a good tactic (with a bit of humor), and goes on to teach it to his followers later on when he forms the Creed. All we've seen and played is a bit, we still don't know if their might be brotherhood elements, as bayek might form the brotherhood, and I say might, because it might not be him, it might be him AND someone else, or a group decision near the end. Plus he could just come up with the whole social stealth thing in a comic afterwards, or in a sequel... If we're lucky enough to get a sequel.

      I really like this series Loomer... cool name for it. I agree with what you are saying, but we all know that life's best lessons are learned through failure. Maybe, because of Bayek's position as a Medjai, he isn't able to blend easily and he finds it difficult to really help people. So when he is developing the creed, he emphasizes the need for social stealth as he has seen first hand how difficult it is when you aren't able to use social stealth. Thoughts?

    • @LaserHuset
      @LaserHuset 7 лет назад

      The devs have stated that there will be more than one playable characters so maybe social stealth will only available for one character, if they're planning on going the same way as in Syndicate or if it will be like Witcher 3 has set to be seen. What would you prefer?

      @BPRGaming I had the same thoughts. I think it can be a progress through the storyline. Like this shouting out:"I AM A MEDJAY!!!" doesn't work so well anymore due to the social changes in egypt and Bayek and the other origin members will create the Assassins's Creed and the classic rules for the Brotherhood.

    I'm going to bide my time and wait to see what the final game plays like.
    Ashraf's big thing is including what fits with the particular game he's trying to make, and throwing away what doesn't fit.
    I'm also keeping my mind open to the very real possibility that Social Stealth/Blending doesn't exist at the beginning of the game because neither does the Assassin Brotherhood
    This technique may be known to one or two individuals via common sense, but it is very likely to not have been formally developed yet.
    The implication of my above two comments is that Social Stealth is something that becomes accessible at the end of the game, perhaps in the final few quests; that Bayek has to use it then, he's too well-known across the land and the Templars are too vigilant. In the final moments that he fully discards his Medjay identity and fully takes on his Assassin identity, it would make sense for the player to have access to Blending/Social Stealth and take the life of the final Target.
    This fluidly leads into AC1, which takes place after Origins in the timeline.

    • @loomer

    I totally agree with you but I do feel like social stealth is something they developed over time. Origin is where it all began, it's not that hard to think that other assassin generations introduced this in more crouded areas of the world! I do like these videos though, well done!

    • @divinuscontundito2748
      @divinuscontundito2748 7 лет назад +8

      That's exactly what I thought as well. If it is not in the game, it would make sense since this is an origin story about the Brotherhood was founded.

    • @loomer
      @loomer  7 лет назад +18

      I totally get what you're saying, and I'm not saying that the game needs to have social stealth prevalent throughout the whole story. BUT I can't imagine a story about the origin of the Brotherhood not also involving the origin of the Creed, which as I argue in the video is heavily rooted in crowds and social stealth. So I'm hoping it's at least addressed narratively, even if not in gameplay (though gameplay would of course be preferrable).

      I believe that Bayek might learn how to blend in at the end of the game. He is a Medjai who protects the people in public (like a hero or police). I believe his ideology will change throughout the game and that he will begin to believe that it is better and more efficient to protect the people from the shadows. At that moment, he will learn to act like an assassin instead of a police officer.

    I agree with you 100%, BUT: It is somewhat explained by the premise of Origins why there's no social stealth. The creed simply doesn't exist yet, right? At least the way we know it, I mean. So maybe Bayek will come to certain realizations over the course of the game and think "I've been doing it all wrong this whole time. We should do it like this blablabla"

    The way you describe it makes the blending mechanic sound like it's more important thematically than it is to the gameplay. In that case, maybe removing that mechanic might not be such a great loss? Especially when given the less town/civilisation centric enviroments.
    That being said, it is a mechanic that's been there since day one, and it's always handy to be able to 'hide in plain sight'. So I have no idea why they would totally remove it, and I'd like to see it return.
    P.S. I like the new series. It'll be good to hear your in-depth opinions on the franchise :)

    • @loomer
      @loomer  7 лет назад +4

      Thanks Pritchard! Yes, at the end of the day if it's just addressed in something like cut scenes I'd be OK with that. Gameplay is definitely preferable. But if the game is going to talk about the origins of the Brotherhood and Creed, it HAS to address the philosophy of crowds and social stealth IMO.

    • @laughingoctopus8556
      @laughingoctopus8556 7 лет назад

      Huw Pritchard
      maybe they'll keep the dragging npc mechanic from syndicate and the hiding in banks or resting on walls from the other games but reduce the passive blending mechanic since these places aren't as populated as previous areas, kinda like ac4.
      or the mechanics will still be there for those that do want to use it(kinda like viewpoints in origins) when it helps but the game is not really built around this passive mechanic like past games and will be more like Splinter Cell blacklist/metal gear solid v sneaking which isn't bad but not very ac.

    Again, loved the video and the subject matter. Social stealth is something I don't think is being talked about enough in the community for Origins. It truly is a massive part of the Assassin's identity. Therefore, as you said, I don't see how a story of the Origins of the Assassins can be told without it being a key element of the game. Or at the very least, being properly addressed by the end of the narrative arc as a pillar for the future Assassins. Great stuff.
    I'd love to see you talk about in future instalments, should Bayek or any future characters have sequels or even trilogies like Ezio. All the pros/cons that this scenario could include. Thanks Looms

    As far as I understand the setting of ACO, Medjay are at the verge of extinction. Therefore I guess that Bayek is only recognized by the people in Siwa because he grew up and served his deed there. In the rest of Egypt no one knows him personally, of course, but the tradition of the Medjay has also vanished from public attention.

    I am very excited for Origins, but I also worry about a lot of things, mainly the RPG progression structure affecting the whole reliving memories deal, which is absolutely essential to the series. Social stealth was something I did not even consider, because I always took it for granted, apart for a couple of games. Now you have me worried.
    Looking forward to more illoomeressays, it's a good format to support ideas and arguments like this one.

  • @aceman1858
    @aceman1858 7 лет назад +17

    You make good arguments on both fronts, and removing social stealth is frankly a bad call by Ubi. I'm probably the only one in the world who holds Unity as my favorite in the series, not so much for story, but for mechanics. It really pushed the "blade in the crowd" motif, and it added the 2 most (personally) sought after features for AC: crouching whenever you want, and a cover system. I'm nearly as excited for this game as I was for AC 2 back in the day, but learning that there is no cover system to speak of has diminished my expectations severely. It may seem small, but that cover system in Unity is what allowed me to sneak through 5 star, 4 player co op missions completely on my own and without using eagle vision. It was such a step forward, and a completely obvious one at that, that I cannot believe they would remove it. Even watching demos, I get worried at the lack of possibilities for corner assassinations. Check out this clip from a gameplay video ruclips.net/video/WauNAVudo3s/видео.htmlm38s . The amount of time you are visible during that kill, and the fact that the body stays outside and visible to everyone will surely cost me in game.
    Don't mean to rant, but AC is a series near and dear to me. Good video and good points.

    • @venatorprinceps
      @venatorprinceps 7 лет назад +4

      I completely agree on Unity's advancements and though the cover system was important as it's been around for a while now, could it be that one reason for its disappearance was that it wasn't really a considered option back then? To be fair (whether it was engine limits or not), I don't recall being able to cover in any way until Assassin's Creed III, and even there it was mainly just around corners. However, that could be countered by saying that you couldn't do assassinations from hiding spots, ledges, or high-ground in Assassin's Creed I, yet you can do it in Origins because they've really pushed the skill tree system.
      By the way, glad to find someone else that watches Centerstrain01. ;)

      Social stealth has been in every Hitman game in a deeper and better way than in AC. It's nothing that makes AC special. What makes AC unique is more the combination of this very basic social stealth system and the freerunning.

      As I commented in another you tube video, "freerunning" is actually part of "parkour", and yes, that is essential for an "Assassin's Creed" game. I also commented that Ubisoft seriously messed up when they killed Desmond. Even though you played most of the game in the past, you (the player), ultimately were Desmond. Now, they're adding "mysticism" into the game and that delineates it from all of the past "AC" games, good to awful, because it takes it from being an awesome combination of scifi-history, to a completely different place.

    I really hope next AC game will feature Aya/Amunet as the main protagonist and will take place in Rome. I like this idea for a couple of reasons:
    1. We've already seen Aya and I feel like she would be a good and fitting protagonist for a continuation.
    2. Unlike Bayek, Amunet was featured in Auditore villa which means she must have been very important for the brotherhood. We already know she assassinated Julius Caesar and Cleopatra but I'm sure we could still learn some secrets about her.
    3. Game set in ancient Rome would tie nicely to AC Brotherhood where we saw 15th century Rome. The game could feature other cities and towns apart from the city of Rome itself. You know... some farms, forests, fields etc. Perhaps some sections set in Greece etc.
    4. The game would create a great opportunity to show us the formation of the second tenet of the brotherhood - hiding in plain sight. Rome was a very busy city and it surely provides a lot of opportunities for social stealth. Perhaps Amunet could be a much more stealth focused protagonist than Bayek. She would not have access to heavy weapons and instead she'd rely on hidden blades, short knives and blending in. I feel like it would be a good moment to reintroduce proper parkour like in AC Unity and Syndicate. Bayek could climb but he wasn't as agile as Arno for example.
    5. I really wanna see Brutus in the armor we saw in AC Brotherhood!
    Ubisoft could also do one thing. They could have two protagonists - both Aya and Bayek. Perhaps even a co-op mode. That would certainly be fun.

    First and more importantly: Really enjoyed this style of AC video. It reminded me of a Vaati video but for Assassin's Creed instead. Which is something I'd love to see more of. (:
    Second and more ramble'y:
    I personally feel like the target audience for the Assassin's Creed games has changed completely. I haven't been hyped by an AC game since the early footage for Unity. And whilst that game had more problems then I care to admit, it felt like the last Assassin's Creed game that was developed with the old fans in mind. Now, unfortunately, I have given up on ever feeling the excitement I used to feel when I new AC trailer is showcased. You might call me a stubborn old fanboy who cannot be satisfied by the new and the different. Either way I think that the developers are looking at a player majority that I'm just not a part of anymore.
    I see comments on the ACO trailer saying things like "This looks like the first AC game since Black Flag that I can get behind" and it shows me that these fans are sick and tired of "Boring old stealth missions" and "slowly climbing a tower to synchronise". These comments are my explanation for changes like the grappling hook in Syndicate and the gradual removal of crowd blending which I think started with Black Flag. (even though they went overboard in Unity) It's sad because to me that's like looking at a new Call of Duty game and saying "Ugh! I'm tired of how they keep making us use guns to shoot people" or at a new Elder Scrolls game and saying "I wish they'd remove side quests from these games".
    I don't really care about "the biggest open world ever made in an AC game". I don't want even more complicated, dynamic, overly slow-mo heavy combat mechanics that show you impaling someone with a spear and only taking 20% of they're health bar away. But I recognise that I am now definitely in the minority. I just hope that someone, someday, will make a new franchise that harks back to the old storytelling and game design of the early Assassin's Creeds.

    What people aren't realizing is: the brotherhood doesn't even exist at the start of this game, which means the creed doesn't exist. Bayek probably embodies some of the tenets of the creed because he's a good guy, but the modus operandi of the assassins is still in development

    Loomer, I'm not sure if you've touched on this before or not but I think an excellent topic for another Illoomination would be something along the lines of "Are the Templars right?" Primarily my reasoning for this is because I just finished Assassin's Creed: Rogue for the second time and after the game was over (though maybe it was how I chose to play Shay) it seemed as though the Templars weren't as bad as the past games allowed them to be portrayed as.
    Seeing you argue both sides (Assassin and Templar) would be interesting as I've done the same, but would like to see someone (who I think is like-minded in the series knowledge) else share their take on it.

    If you're gonna keep doing this "Illoominations" series, I think it'd be interesting if you did a breakdown of other core mechanics, and maybe the differences in the characters and writing between the older games and the newer ones. There's a clear difference that could be interesting to examine if you're so inclined.

    The day social stealth dies is the day the franchise dies. The whole fucking point of this series was to be a blade in the crowd. Take that away and it's just another hack and slash with a cover system.

    I think it will be healhty if origins won't follow every core features of previous AC games. It is common that game developers include some new features but simultaneously they cut something out, mainly to bring it back again later as a 'brand new feature'. Maybe doing so sounds silly, but it makes games fresh.

    Yes, excellent point. Social stealth is key to the series identity. I don't think it will lessen Origins too much as a game if it lacks it but may impact its identity as an AC game. Especially since it sets out to revitalize AC and define the series' direction for the foreseeable future.

    I'm really glad you mentioned the disguise system in Liberation. I thought that was a really great feature and would love to see it return in the full games. While it's fun to have a ton of weapons at your disposal, I also really like going in to missions with minimal gear, and sometimes having those sorts of limitations imposed can be a lot of fun. Like you, I'm super excited about this game, but the lack of social stealth has me a little disappointed.

    I agree with your view that social stelth is an integral part of an assassin's life.
    But Bayek isn't an assassin (yet). He is founding the brotherhood and he is developing the assassin's methods. I think that later he will discover how to use the crowds and what advantages it will bring.
    Excelent video. Looking forward to next one in the series.

    I would point out that the leak which first revealed the existence of Assassins Creed Origins, then known as AC Empire, stated the they were thinking about doing a trilogy with Bayek, with the sequels set in Ancient Greece and Rome. So if Bayek does develop the Creed over the course of the series, then they could bring Social Stealth in one of these sequels.

  • @jagerbradley

    Can't use social stealth if there aren't any NPCs to do it with. Methinks Bayek'll learn about the power of unity and implement it into the tenets of the brotherhood. Maybe a foreign Assassin(playable?) will use his life experience as an Assassin to implement that idea?

      Thank you! Social stealth = assassin. Multiplayer only worked on the games where Ubisoft included characters totally unrelated to either Assassins or Templars, but the idea was to "hide in plain sight". My son loved to play that part of the games when he accomplished all the main game. He even beat a group of 4 players (who were 15 levels above him), because he figured out the one weakness they had in their game. He did that twice, and they left.

    After having just finished Origins I can say that it was handled well, by Aya, not Bayek.
    The last scene of her pulling on her hood and disappearing into the crowd was really great and shows that the social stealth element is just starting with her.
    It's a shame it wasn't in the main game with Bayek, although given that he was well-known is an issue, but I'd of hoped that if we ever got a sequel to Origins it focused on Aya/Amunet using and developing the social stealth tenent into her section of the brotherhood in Rome.
    Then Odyssey got released....

    He might be medjay but that doesn't mean he is recognized by people. He is not a rich man, he wears basic clothes and walks the crowd. I doubt many people would recognize him, especially in ancient times. It's ok for him to be recognized in small place where he originated, but in cities its not realistic at all. By the way, wasn't Ezio the most popular in Florence or actually in entire Italy with all the posters and stuff? Also that's the point of having crowds. Hiding in plain sight....

  • @MauriceWijma
    @MauriceWijma 7 лет назад

    I agree with your points. It will also be sad to see it go. But I have two ideas of why it would not really work and maybe a reason why it is not in the game.
    First, the places we have seen don't look crowded. Not even enough to get a good blend with the crowd. They needed to set up the monks in AC 1 to get social stealth working somewhat. If they did it like in AC2, the streetlife wouldn't really work well. That is something I thought of in my playthrough of AC 1 last month.
    Second reason might be the story. He is very well known. Maybe this will work in his disadvantage at some point, forcing him to rethink how he stands in the world.
    Remember that Origins is set to be a story about the start of the Assassins order. I think this might just be one thing that develops the rules and status of the (at that time) future order.

    While I agree that social stealth was a very unique mechanic that separated AC from the other stealth games, I have always felt that it never worked well or had poor implementation. One example from more recent years that comes to mind was a mission in Unity where the objective was to move through a large crowd surrounding a heavily guarded public execution. I kept alerting the same guard, so I thought of a strategy to scatter some money around the guard, and when the people swarmed him, I would eliminate him with a quick, low-profile assassination and continue towards my goal unnoticed. Well that's not at all how it would play out.. The very moment Arno's blade struck, all guards were alerted and I failed the mission. It was as if I attempted the assassination right out in the open. I tested this by trying it over several more times just to be sure I didn't do anything wrong, but it yielded the same results.
    In the early titles I used to find it frustrating that social stealth was the only option, particularly because of examples like this one and due to how forced the mechanic felt. But even though I'm happy that we now have a full stealth mechanic, I'm still disappointed to see the social stealth feature get removed. Not really for the thematic reasons mentioned in this video, but because I think the feature has a lot of untapped gameplay potential. If only they could give it a refresh and have it remain alongside stalking and environmental stealth in the assassin's repertoire instead of having to compromise between the two.

    As valid as your points are, most of them draw from a creed that does not exist within the scopes of origin. Most of the characteristic Assassin behaviours may have arisen from the millennia of assassins that follow in Bayeks footsteps and as such, I feel that the omission of some of these behaviours lends more to the context of both the game and its story.

    The game could consist of high profile assassinations but in the end encourage the new assassins who are not as well know to act not in the same as Bayek but to learn maybe from his possible death that high profile is not always the way and that the crowds are a great asset

    I agree its important. Even the Ninja of old japan weren't wearing those black cloth outfits and masks like that. Sure some, but... Most of the Ninja wore ordinary clothes to blend in with the people. You're not exactly gonna get very far wearing a black body suit and face covered lol :) And they were performing assassinations during the daytime as well.
    Some social stealth is appropriate. Which really shouldn't be too difficult considering Bayek doesn't stand out too much.

    Not going to lie I love social stealth, however, in most situations it makes no sense whatsoever, and I think it should only be used when an opportunity to blend into a large crowd arises, not just sat on a bench or stood with 4 people who all look the same making you stand out if anything?

    You know, I'm actually kinda glad they ditched social stealth. The thing is, rather than having fully fledged systems for both traditional and social stealth, the series just ended up with half-assed versions of both, by completely doing away with one of them, _hopefully_ the other one will be much more fleshed out.
    Again, emphasis on the _hopefully_ part.

    I don't want it to happen, but this game has a very high rate of failure. To turning arrows, weak parkour & environment interactions, bad lip syncing, hack & slash combat, no social stealth, poor & choppy in game animations, & a very poor stealth system. There's just so much wrong with it I don't know if the few things good like the setting will be able to hold it up in the end.

    social stealth isn't very logical when you're covered in blades and weapons from head to toe. it made sense in the first game due to the simple garbs and cloaks being the norm but later in the series it wasn't very practical.

    In Origins also the normal stealth is nearly useless because you can't stab higher-leveled guards. They made it so useless to emphasise on the new combat. I find this really sad because it is an ASSASSIN'S game not a God of War.
