The whale was already referenced in earlier episode. When Subaru and Rem decide to check the mansion Rem says that they can't take the main road because there is a fog here so that means the white whale was here. But In that episode they decide to live way earlier and Subaru probably forgot this information.
I just love how Subaru went around to some of the most powerful people in the nation, and went "hey, help me please please please"?

The Sword Saint has a divine blessing known as the Divine Blessing of the Sword Saint, which is what makes them the Sword Saint. He's not just a person who has mastered using his sword
Edit: Also, only people born into the Astrea family can become a Sword Saint.

Betelguise is called the "Archbishop of Sloth" with Sloth being a witch, so he's sort of a disciple who has been given power. He calls many people slothful, especially Subaru.
This show has many moments, and whilst the first season is great - everything just builds to better and better payoffs through this and the next season.
In the light novel, Subaru actually watched as the hand caressing his heart reached out and crushed Emilia's.
He calls everyone slothful, he actually keeps calling Subaru pride because Subaru qualifies to be an arch bishop and the only seat left open is Pride as confirmed by Sloth

So i recommend you check out those ova
And rezero frozen bonds ova is very important for s2 especially frozen bonds is mandatory ova for s2 ep 14

Subaru is assumed to be pride by Petelguese, cuz that "seat" is empty (indicating that Archbishop doesnt exist yet). Canonically, we are following the Envy route but there are other *IF stories* as well where he could've diverged from the main story route/timeline. Two have happened, Wrath IF he ran away with Beako, Pride IF he keot loosing to Elsa in ep2 and upcoming Sloth IF next episode he took a different decision.

Calling 12 and 13th episode shitty is not fair. It actually weeded out lot of dumb watchers and one who stayed after that really appreciated those episodes later. You will see why in coming episodes provided you stay after ep 18. Ep 18 also a filtering episode to weed out few more emo watchers. From there it's just one masterpiece ep after another
We don’t mean shitty in the sense that they were “bad”, it’s more about how they make you feel in that moment and the frustration we had for the situation but of course they’re huge for development and story telling (which you see more with each ep afterwards)
Characterizing them as filter episodes doesn't help dude. It's still separating them as "less than" in terms of perceived writing and quality, which is just weird and illogical for people to do.
Those episodes had good writing, pacing, foreshadowing, and were seriously character defining.
12, 13, and 18, along with pretty much all of the second half of season 1 are all of top notch quality, with 15 being a major highlight for its drama.
There's nothing wrong with them, people just aren't comfortable watching the MC make a fool of himself. It's not comfortable for me either, because I've been that jackass before.
They probably don't like it because they don't relate to it.
If you can't relate to it, there's not much you can get out of watching someone be a dickhead.

Pleaseee read this its important!! no spoilers so don’t worry! Petelgeuse (spelled with a p, not b) is the archbishop of sloth. when you pay attention to his words, you realize he hates the idea of being slothful, and loves to be diligent. Sloth is one of the 7 sins while diligence is the opposite of sloth, a virtue. He calls subaru pride, because pride is the only vacant seat for archbishops in the witch cult, all 5 sins are taken, leaving only pride. envy is currently sealed, not dead, but sealed by the 3 heroes who are the sage, the first sword saint, and the great dragon (This is said by beatrice between ep 7 and 9 i think?). Also there’s 2 huge mistranslations and one minor one! the master swordsman is supposed to be translated as the sword saint, and the white whale didn’t kill the first sword saint, but the previous one (the current sword saint is reinhard, red haired guy). The minor mistranslation is fligel’s great tree, it’s supposed to be flugel, not fligel lol.

I've never seen a character getting destroyed by facts and logic by so many smart female characters in the same episode.
Why they think ep 12 and 13 are bad?! I'm not saying you're obliget to like it, just that I personally don't understand the critcism that is presented.
Those episodes are so well written, being a gread exposition of Subaru's psychology and character overall. His insecuritiess, his immaturety, his hero complex and so much more. Those are key aspects to understand the story. Meaning that you're suppose to not feel well by watching Subaru acting in those ways. And is not because you dislike or disagree with the protagonist that the show or the episode is bad.
So I disagree with their point of view about that. And about the privious episodes. Since Re Zero is a character diving type of story, who slowly and step by step build their character, not just Subaru but everyone.
Just to clarify, I don’t mean the episodes were actually “bad”, they’re great in the big picture and seeing where Subaru ends up afterwards, it’s more so how in the moment they were uncomfortable and at times irritating to watch (compared to now seeing the payoff + the story get rolling)
@@CaraPrezReacts Yeah, it's worth noting that those episodes were designed to be uncomfortable, irritating and frustrating because it's a very raw and real depiction of how ugly a person can be when they hard self-destruct in a ego and trauma driven downward spiral. The author wanted that on full display to show how the characters in this story are not trope driven plot conveniences, but instead written as truly human as possible to be representatives of the human condition. That means breakdowns, relapses, lashing out, and acts of extreme selfishness.
Like Otto pushing Subaru out the cart. Just a raw and ugly but very human depiction of our inherently flawed natures. Once you realize that re:zero doesn't strictly care about entertaining you, and instead is a character study, then these moments become some of the best in the show for what they offer insight wise into what a human can and cannot endure.
What happened was Subaru just went in without all of the facts and no bargaining chips

The witch that Subaru smells to is Envy. Betelgeuse acts in representation of Sloth. He asked Subaru if he is Pride.
Can not wait for next episode. Episode 18 is my favourite out of all of season 1. Allthough I have a gut feeling you guys might not think the same way lmao

I think what you guys needs to realize is that the write wants you to hate him, and understand how flawed he is. This anime is a masterpiece in showing the flaws of human being. Subaru is basically us in this world
just base on how much they love the character of Rem, im wondering how they will feel when they watch the Rem/Subaru scene. Im curious cause of how much they hated subaru in the past few eps xD pretty sure they will hate him more after that.
17:08 Those episodes were not shitty. They are necessary for what is happening and what is about to happen. Without that this arc would have fallen flat and just turned into nothingness. And it does seem like you understand that aswell based on your commentary there, Im guessing you just means shitty as in that they were hard to watch with how cringe Subaru was there.
Fun that the show is making us see Subaru as a dumb guy lol, despite that he is the very opposite of dumb, by trying to make a deal with the others candidates, he was just being very naïve and desperate; Crush really had hopes that Subaru would be able to make a good deal with her
All of these other candidates come off as super hardline bitches, but the funny thing is, each of them are completely right about Subaru in these moments and on some level they're all teaching him some important lessons.
Just remember, pride is bad, partly because it prevents you from focusing on your own past mistakes and causes you to ignore the lessons embedded in your experiences.
Subaru's gonna have to shake that off, if he's gonna learn. Even self-hatred/self-deprecation is a form of pride. He's too focused on himself.

I had to stop watching re-zero because it just gets too dark for me . Rem is such a sweetie and he is such a twat sometimes.
I wonder if they've figured out yet that these episodes are "soo much better than 12 and 13", because they're all paying off the punishment Subaru deserved for what he did in episodes 13?
He's been a jack ass. He continues to be a jack ass. Everyone keeps telling him he's a jack ass, all the while bumping into new mysteries and obstacles.
It's the same set up the show has been doing. Get used to it.
12 &13 were set ups. These are the trial & error phase of episodes, he faces the most brutal suffering. Then comes the Problem Solving Phase Starting with ep 18 at the turning point, and then the Resolution of the threat Phase that loops directly into the next set-up.
It was the exact same with the Mansion arc and the Insignia Arc, and will generally keep the same pace throughout the whole series.
