  • Talking to an instructor about grass strips in Spanaflight Flight School, and FBO in WA state, inspired me to make this video about grass strips hidden dangers.

I’ve been watching your videos since day 1. I get my STOL cuff installed next month on my older 172 with big tires. You are a great aviator and a great inspiration to amateurs like me. Great video Larry.

Great video, Larry. In the midwest a big problem is how fast the grass grows and farm strips that will not be mowed until harvest. I used many of those with standard tires. You mentioned and demonstrated the mud problem well. Six to eight inch tall grass becomes very difficult, both landing nose over or nose gear problem and especially on takeoff. Getting into low ground effect on takeoff as soon as the wing will fly in low ground effect is necessary. Add rain and you may have to wait a long time for cutting or at least drying. You can get caught easily and then rain can prevent takeoff.

What a beautiful place to fly and explore with the perfect plane like this for this kind of cool flying and being able to land almost anywhere! So cool...
I always wanted to get lessons and maybe one day be able to get my own plane like this and get my license. But the planes prices have gone up so much in recent years plus all the other costs for an airplane in area like where i am..

Larry, you make it look so easy....I'm not a pilot. I just took a discovery flight this year at age 62 and it was amazing! Would love to have you as my flight instructor here in South Florida. You have incredible skills and an excellent way of explaining situations that every pilot should be aware of. Thank you for sharing.

Love the use of the drone...the footage is excellent. Personally, I have only been to grass strips during my training. I know the procedures but will use only in an emergency...I prefer a paved, no ice, no water runway any day of the week.

@@motoadveBackcountry182 So all of these grass strips are approved I guess? I live in Flamingo. Apparently they use to have a strip here near the old marina. I would like to take up flying again but here it's just not practical to do so. I really enjoy your videos. Maybe we can fly together one day. Are you mostly flying out of Pavos?

Not to mention rutting up some guy’s grass strip that he’ll have to repair, even if you make it out.

@@motoadveBackcountry182 keeping our grass field mowed & crowned is enough work. Rutting, beat down grass, & the erosion from both are why we finally closed our field & made it Restricted on the sectionals. Now only those of us with hangers can use the field. Our rule is “repair your divots” or lose your hanger.
