You hit the nail on the head. I own a small grading company and when I say small I mean me and my wife. I work 80 to 90 hours a week and love it but it’s also very stressful. You wear a lot of hats running a company so I just wear a round brim so I can keep turning it. Good job on the videos.

I have gotten more information from you while binging your videos then I have over 20 years in the waste industry and trucking and then making the shift to ownership in land management and dirt moving. I love being an operator and business owner and you have made me better at both in the switch. If we should meet at an expo, lunch and a drink on me.

Very accurate. I owned a car repair business for 10 years. It was great but you wear a lot of hats and encounter a lot of stress. The harder you push to grow/make more, the more stressful it is.

What he said! Yes this is so true. All of it. It even applies to my current business which while similar is not in fact landscaping or excavating. I have been watching this series to help me take the plunge back into this kind of work. I had gotten out of it but really miss it. I truly enjoyed it and there's nothing I'd rather do as far as work is concerned than run equipment.
And the estimates provide valuable information. That hour or hour and a half talking to Mrs. Smith builds the relationship and yields all kind of information critical to the job. Which neighbors are "sensitive" (trying to be nice here), where any electrical lines are buried going to the shed or landscape lights going out to trees, what spots get soft in the field when it gets wet and how long it takes to drain, etc. It seems like a social call but you are learning valuable information and becoming friends.
Absolutely! Engaging with the customer can save you so much time and headache further down the road. It also builds grace into the relationship. If you screw up without having a relationship with the customer then it is easy for them to blow up at you. If you've invested some time in the relationship they will be much more forgiving if something goes wrong or you find out some bad news along the way.
Yup spot on . Every time I try to tell people about owning a business I feel like it comes out negative. But it’s the best ! When you work for someone They choose everything for you . The money you make,the jobs you do, the customers you work for, the weather you work in , the equipment brand you run , the employees you have around you .the list goes on . I found having a “job” is all more stressful for me having. someone else run most on the time in my life all just to get laid off or they sell out and a new jerk comes in . I’m in it for freedom of choice!
It's hard to be realistic without sound pessimistic unfortunately. There are a ton of benefits of owning your own company but, easy is never the word I would use to describe having your own company. Thanks for the comment Steve!

Owning a company is a HUGE responsibility! HUGE! It is rewarding sometimes, but during times like these when materials are difficult to obtain, and fuel is skyrocketing, parts are impossible, it is a very high stress position to be in. Few rewards and lots of stress. I work nearly double the hours of my employees and almost never sleep without thi king about some aspect of the business. Good video man! Tell it like it is brother! Life is not just cotton candy and rainbows!

I own a small landscape company (one man operation). This all hits the nail on the head but man the stress is for real. Great video and thanks for sharing the truth. There are perks and I usually like being my own boss, but there’s also been plenty of days I’ve almost gone and taken up other guy’s offers to come and work for them.
Same here bro!! Been there and labor is no where to be found.
@@ej4401 lots of times labor has said they’d be there but never showed. Made me take smaller stuff and quick relying on labor help.

I have ran tree removal businesses for years. When everyone else went home, I spent time in the shop maintaining equipment. I pay the employees, then I spend the rest on equipment.. Kinda sucks but when the money is good, life is great!
Owning the company definitely has its perks and its drawbacks. A lot of business ownership depends on the type of personality you are. A lot of people aren't cut out for it.
What would you say to 3 generation owners for a well established company?

First I would applaud you and your family for having a successful company. Second I would say, don't ever get complacent. As your family already knows, the industry is always changing. New challenges are constantly presenting themselves (labor shortages, fuel prices, material shortages..what else can we tack on this year?!). Just because something has worked for the company for 3 generations doesn't mean it will continue to work in the future. Always be willing to adapt. Too many established companies get stuck in their ways and slowly fade over time because they are unwilling to change. Thanks for the comment Chase!
dont for get the high cost of insurance, i started years ago, renting everything thing i needed for each job. there so many peaces you need for just about any job. parts and repairs costs are huge owning it,renting you dont have thaat worry unless you damaged it all i boughtwas a 5 ton dump truck with fold down sides for the smqaller jobs but that a lone a huge on going costs with having to have it saftied every 12 months and plates for 6 months are huge
There is soooo much that goes into owning a business. I don't think you could ever really capture it in a single video.
@@DieselandIron i have been in business longer then you been a live. what you need in Canada to keep a truck over 3/4 ton and trailrt over 10,000 GVW is a hell of a lot of cost to keep our hyw safe compared to the usa is huge. sure you can capture it in a single video. just cut out all the or play shots and useless drone footage and stay on topic. that's also why short videos are never any good, they leave out what maters. if someone is going to cover a topic, you cover it top to bottom, time is not a factor. of a video, the wayi see it, by just hitting the small stuff give someone new starting or thinking of starting false info and notthe full deal. if someone is lead to think all they need to start is buy one machine and they are set, not a chance
