Remember when Cleetus McFarland tested an electric turbo and it was, well, a bit of a joke? Things are getting serious as our do-it-yourself (DIY) electric turbo tries to push this mid 80's sedan into the 9's at the drag strip - and hopefully it puts Cleetus' turbo to shame. Come with us as we take the LTD and Sledgehammer to Capitol Raceway to if she'll run the number! Please like and subscribe so I can justify making more videos like this! I know sometimes in-video cards can be distracting, but in case you missed it, the dyno video is here: ruclips.net/video/b9d5xv9INmw/видео.html
Just freaking awesome! And who said electric “turbos” are a myth! That went so good! Nine seconds is fast, 12 is ok sporty but street car and nines, oh man.
In the days of twin turbo LS swapped everything on RUclips people have a warped sense of times. They think oh a 9 isn't that fast. Oh yeah? Remember 20 years ago when Vin Diesel and Paul Walker owed each other "10 second cars" and they showed up with fire breathing, wheel standing chargers and supras? The point is no production car on earth ran 11s until the McLaren F1 and it held the title until the Veyron ran 9.9 so that LTX would run neck with the Veyron. Any 9 second car is fast. My buddy had an Evo that ran mid 11s in 2004 and car beat everything but real race cars back then. We'd take it to the local track and win fastest street car and fastest import every Tuesday night. Hey it paid for mods lol. Being able to buy a Demon or Tesla that runs 9s or even 8's stock or with bolt on is absolutely crazy and anyone over 30 understands that id bet.
I'll make another youtube account just to subscribe again for more videos like that. Taking a 12 second car into the 9s on 6 psi? Unreal. Congrats, that's a huge win! All I can think of is all the sleeper applications for this lol
Coolest most innovative power adding modification on YT! The science, the data, the technology and the results. It is hard to believe that a marketable kit like this wouldn’t become very popular. Great job!
Thanks for the kind words, Thane.
That Ltd really is badass. Well done!.
AWESOME to see this thing in the 9's!!
Very, very impressed! Genius engineering! Time to market these electric turbos a make millions!!! I'm serious. Put me down for a kit!
Glad you are having some wins mate! Well done on hitting some 9’s.
I don't know how you don't have more subscribers. Absolutely impressive results. I MUST do this with my SRT and GX470. There just isn't solutions for the GX I'm happy with in terms of not affecting the reliable factory engine bay, and most folks who modify them eventually add a shore power setup anyways that could justify a crazy alternator and battery setup already. I'm going to be putting in a brushless fuel pump with a fuel pressure feedback for PWM control, should basically target just over stock regulator pressure.
You need to build and send one to cleet and crew since they have all the dang electric turbo search results for one cheesy one. And they have a dyno and enough cars to test it on. It would probably grow your base enough in one week to get all the funding necessary for a few months of development. So happy to see someone messing with these keep up the good work, I'll get in touch when I'm ready and have prepped one of my cars for one of these. I'm sure I'll have a few questions even with the spectacular coverage you've put together. "Yes honey my uh, my Traxxas? really NEEDS this $700 motor heheh"
I actually considered trying to find a few of those 80V suitcase battery things Ryobi is putting in it's electric ride ons. Just in general it would be sweet. Also want to test it with one of the larger inverter generator battery deals that so many people are using anyways. Discharge may not be fast enough, but at 120v, it could do the trick. Not sure what sort of motor controller I'd be able to use but there's obviously lots of drivers for 120V just doubt any are ruggedized etc.
In the words of sports caster Stephen A Smith "This is EXACTLY what I've been waiting for, this is EXACTLY what I've been waiting for!". (You singing that song was icing on the cake lmao)
Lol. Thanks Robbi.
Super awesome! That is the pinnacle or sleeper! One day I hope to build something of this caliber.
i clicked on this video prepared to witness a bully fest in the comments due to the title 😂 I saw electric and turbo next to each other in the title and assumed the worst. But i’m glad to see i was wrong! Awesome car, great video 👍🏼
Totally right.... Couldn't of asked for a better ending!! Good on you hey
Between the Analysis you do and the actually testing this is such a viable project & appreciate the work you put into it :)
I could see using the system in lots of different applications not just drag racing
Even though it seems so simple in hind sight. I love the overlay of the time slip with the interior shots of each pass. Allows you to see what the car is doing and how the battery voltage sags during the pass. Awesome video as always and keep up the good work!
Awesome!!! Good work guys!!!!!!!!!! All You're hard work has paid off.
Congrats! Awesome to see it doing so well after all the time you've put into it.
Congratulations! Very impressive and awesome content.
Congratulations!!!! From one Jason to another, I'm proud of you man!!!
I thought that was you! I was the guy with the red turbo Foxbody. I been watching your channel since you had the blower bc my car was a similar set up at the time.
That's my track! Would be sweet to see this thing in action.
Unfortunately, I'm moving to Texas. Mason Dixon is about an hour and half (in good traffic) from my place in MD.
Man, I love this build!!! Congratulations
Wooooohoooo!!! Nice to see all the work paid off. 👍
OHHH YEEAH!!!! Congrats man, you are in a class of your own.
Great vid.
Damn! 9 seconds at 135 mph? While my slightly modified v6 ecotec commodore vx model does zero to 100 kmh in 8.4 seconds. Only .4 seconds over standard!!!! I have tools in the car but still!!! I love your beast of a car! That sound is tough as!!! Please start selling your turbo in kit form! I want one ! ❤
Definitely getting closer to selling at least parts and "modules." Just need the new place operational to do some more in-depth dyno testing.
That ting looks awesome! The car reminds of the caddy look a little, and the back end at a glance? It reminds me of my Holden uc Torana. It gets me everytime. Lol wat change 1/ 4 mile drags in Australia and America! Cheers mate! Thanks for the reply! 🙂👍👍👍
I fucking love this. I'm just getting into cars and turbos and this is the coolest shit ever.
Awesome that launch was perfect 👍🏾
Nice work my man!
Congrats! Exciting stuff!
Congrats on the 9
Man, that was awesome Alex! Congrats! I'm curious about the noise...🤔 let us know what you find.
I'm hoping it had to do with the cracks in the pulley. I have a new one here to install already; but I also need to address the place in Texas because that's going off the rails...
@AlexLTDLX glad that it's just a quick fix and nothing major. Can't wait for the next one. Also, I NEED A SLEDGE! 💯👊🏻
Amazing work!
great job alex!
Mate... GOOD ON YA !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Eddie Australia
That is awesome!
Awesome!
Thanks!
A lot od dedication and work!!! 👍👍👍. BTW that LTD is heavy I bet! Electric car is instant torque! I'd be happy with 12 seconds! What is that in 0 to 60 mph? Man that beast is Quick!!! Australia should have imported them. Like America imported the pontiac GTO!
During covid, we drag tested with a Dragy which gives 0-60 times: ruclips.net/video/AOL3Qyczt3Y/видео.html after that we took the dragy to the track to do some more testing, and to compare the Dragy's accuracy: ruclips.net/video/nlTVHkfSQXM/видео.html Based on those times, I'd estimate 0-60 to be around 2.2 seconds right now. Another way to look at it - the Tesla Plaid ran a 1.45 60' with slicks on all four corners while running the "standard fast" Plaid times. A Plaid runs 0-60 in about 2.1 seconds (without Tesla's BS "rollout" subtraction). We went 1.47 in the 60'. 2.2 to 2.3 seconds seems to be a good estimate.
Bloody hell! LMAO 🤣. That's insane! Quicker than the R1 superbike!!!! Hell yeah!! Love it!🙂👍👍👍👍
god damn 9’s?
this is soooooooooo coool
Alternator running so hard its shearing peices of the crank pulley off lol.
The alternator can only charge it over time. It was completely not related to the electrical system for the electric supercharger on these passes. It draws about 34,000 Watts when it runs.
Congratulations on the 9 that is impressive honestly and yeah you need to get a run back on that Tesla. I do have a question on the last pass your batt voltage started to drop fast. Was that just because he shut it off?
Yes
You could really hustle people on the street with this. Disconnect it and store it in the trunk, run and let them beat you thinking you have no chance. Then come back and put it on, run again and smoke them. Used to be easier to win $$$ street racing because people raced ego more than tech, meaning you could bait people who believed their car was unbeatable into racing you for cash just to save face, only for you to win. Decent way to offset the cost of this type of hobby.
Hey bud that’s a nice Sepulveda💪 where did u go to get a dyno tune?
Here's a link to our last dyno tuning session at McNew's Automotive in Dillsburg PA: ruclips.net/video/b9d5xv9INmw/видео.htmlsi=p9g7y15kEezN3CgQ
Make one for my SR20DE S14 JDM Silvia/Datsun Roadster
@AlexLTDLX Would love for you to do a separate series where you help subscribers such as myself E-Charge their cars. (5.3L LS Mazdaspeed Miata) Signed waivers of course 😅😂
I've been thinking about that. If you want to discuss this off-line, send me an email to the email address under the "business inquiries" under the "about" tab on my channel's homepage.
Man you gotta work on that 60'
I'm thinking putting a turbo on a Mazda b4000/ranger prerunner. Curious how it will do
Congrats Alex, try changing the strategy when the electric turbocharger is boosting to get that Tesla! The 5 PSI boost from the beginning itself . . .
In the race against the Corvette, Jason sat on the brake a hair longer, allowing the Sledgehammer to fully spool. The reason why it broke traction on that pass is he left on over 10 psi; on the other runs the most we saw was 8 psi. I'll do a datalog video to go through it all as soon as I can.
@@AlexLTDLX An idea from my side, don't know if it makes sense, the Sledgehammer needs a dedicated ECU for itself which will control its speed, with respect to engine RPM, and boost pressure desired or any other feedback conditions. Eagerly awaiting your next video.
That will happen in time. I don't think it will happen on the Sledgehammer, though. The long cable runs and massive battery pack (as well as insane current draw) all combine to form an environment not friendly to cheap and cheerful microcontrollers. Now on the P2 units, I can see that happening.
Man this project has come a long way since it started as a scavenge pump. I've never seen anyone commit to an internet meme so thoroughly and it's been worth all 4 years.
Lol - thanks. Yeah, I can go a little nuts on projects...
Did the worn crank pulley vibrate or just give noise? Very impressive runs..
It was more just noise. Didn't really feel anything from it.
Congrats buddy
Why was the voltage dropping massively in the end?
Thanks. Are you referring to after Jason shut off the electric turbo and the capacitors were discharging?
@@AlexLTDLX at the very end yes it drops from 50V to 40V and keeps going done
Is that indicative of the voltage of the whole battery or just the capacitors? So when the switch is open they just drain
Just the capacitors. Watch the pack voltage at the beginning of each run - that will show you what the batteries recovered to. I never charged the packs at the track.
Sir, a question:
Big turbos work great once you get them going. With that in mind would your system work as a booster running for 2 or 3 seconds just to get the big turbo going?
If it would then would that also make the power requirements simpler and cheaper?
Yes, to all your questions. Audi already does this on some of its diesels.
sounds like your engine is laying over or revving too high at the 1/4
Questions. What is your electrical setup? Alternator/Battery/Supercap? And what's been done to engine? And what's details on echarger? Boost?
I have a whole playlist to answer all your questions: ruclips.net/p/PLhacdpER4T0vzo531cmfi_7fJWd-7DSSt
If you're short on time, you can watch the sledgehammer assembly video and the last three dyno videos; but pretty much anything sledgehammer related will answer any questions you have. And no, supercaps are not useful here (I do have a supercap video that would show why on my channel too).
@@AlexLTDLX yep, time is short indeed. prefer to read than watch for specs
@@st33ldi9ital you tube will reward him for you watching not for reading lol. take a few minutes of time for years of hard work
@@jsomething2 I understand that but not my problem. I have my own work to do. Not about to go watch hours of video to get a simple answer. Definitely not gonna hunt for them. Shrug.
Why is the Pack Voltage dropping so hard at the last pass?
Are you talking about after Jason Switched off the Sledgehammer? Otherwise, the voltage sag is about the same as usual.
Time to find a Fox body AWD unit? 🤔
Lol - I'll probably just build a race-only vehicle of some sort to go faster. The LTD is too fast for it's safety gear already; and I don't want to put a full cage in it.
@@AlexLTDLX sounds like a job for a mid engine sand rail chassis, modified 🤣🤣🤣
im not mechanical and dont know exactly whats happening , have seen the clettus video and see a sleeper with drag wheel tire set up go from 12s into 9s with an " E;ectric Turbo " so now I have to know. If something could be made for every chuckle head to have a little hit of boost that recharges its obviously cool , but does this mean something like that is possible > I will sub as its a sin not more subs 17K is very wrong if this is real . Of course even DIY i want to know how much it cost It makes many many thousands of 4 of time go away thats for sure and I guiess because it hits so early jand no parasitic loss its a little safer and easier to run for chuckle heads if they could somebow strap these to every piec of crap on the planet . I would like the insta boost on my hyundai N Line MT car with 1.6t 200 HP car so it pulled something like a stock 5.0 fox body in second / third gear purely for the giggle shits if it didnt cause immediate engine failure and with such small pressure early the engine / ecu could deliver the fuel . I dont know who tools work though , that and the clettus one messed up air flow when not in use which is un adcceptable for a party trick trick component but a button to hit for MORE POWER TEMPOARAILY is kinda holy grail even in a shit box for a few / 5 seconds or whatever . Especially if it can be taken in and out. I dont know , i now have to watch to understand what any of this is or how it relates to the Clettus one in fabncy padded box that cost too much cuz built to nice and small qty but would atract chuckle heads for right price .
The one Cleetus tested was a toy by comparison - that one peaks at 5,000 watts. This one peaks at 35,000 watts. But check out the electric turbo playlist - there's over 90 videos in it with tons of info.
@@AlexLTDLX will do sir 35 vs 5 , yes , i reckoned it was serious to cut that much time. I will watch , but I am curious and hopefully find out what this mad scientist voodoo would cost a person to emulate if they had the wizardry to do so . I'm sure your R and D cost some but I hope to find out how much if one followed your potion , can't be cheap , speed never is , impressive as all get out though .
Crasy !!!
Finish up your affordable kit so I can slap it on my car and take it to time attack and hill climb.
I'm working on it - I need to deal with some issues with the new place first...
@@AlexLTDLX oh dear. concerning.

Was is surging?
I don't think so. The datalog was clean.
You seem to know your stuff . Buddy o mine replaced the turbo on his Cummins ,if brain remembers copper conducts heat well but it reflects ir better than cast , so if u plated the housing , say seal the flange and fill with CuSo4 , the reactions happen until no iron can react. Then electroplate just enough for the turbinewheel . Respond if you can please seems like something a home gamer could do. And if it erodes se la vie. When don't old boats need a wrench for sea worthness
Are talking about the turbine side? I actually would have to research about copper's thermal conductivity (which I know is great) vs reflectivity (which I don't know enough about to comment on without research - and I'm about to head out of town). When I ran the Whipple, I made the intercooler core out of 140' of 1/4" copper tube. It worked so well it would melt 10lbs of ice in a single drag strip pass. Here's a look at the core I built: ruclips.net/video/oXeUxONLO9I/видео.html
@@AlexLTDLX yes
I really don't know, to be honest. If I had to guess, I'd think there would be little to no effect, particularly in a diesel application because the the turbine side tends to have a nice coating of carbon developing pretty fast.
@@AlexLTDLX those vacuum stainless containers are copper plates on the inside to reflect heat . Lots of radiant heat in there. Just a brain fart .
Why would anyone drag race their Tesla? No personal involvement, like racing your kitchen mixer against someone else's mixer. Racing tip: Yeh, take out the passenger seat on that Tesla.
To be honest, I'd like to take one down track just for the experience - a low 9 second ride in almost silence would cause my brain a big disconnect that could be fun. But I do see your point - it would certainly get boring fast (no pun intended).
First👌
Nice work.
