It’s fantastic to watch these conversations between Chris Russo and Bob Costas. Especially because Mad Dog listens carefully when Bob speaks. That’s not always the case. Well done. 👊✨👍
He cut him off towards the end
Costas is over 70 ,he looks great,
😅🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Why is that guy always YELLING?!?!?
I've been a Bob Costas fan since the '90s ... he SHOULD be the commissioner ⚾
Just go back to two divisions in each league and four wild cards.
While I’m not a Mariners fan, this season was disappointing but not terrible for them. They should compare these last two seasons to the Astros of 2015 and 2016, which were very similar in making the WC one year and losing a disappointing ALDS, then just missing the playoffs the next year. We all know those Astros made a big jump after that.
Os definitely had a great season either way. But I don't know if they have as bright a future as we would probably like to see. Their owner basically already admitted he may not give extensions to any of their young stars, let alone even 1-2 of them. That is a 4-5 year window then with this group. And guys like Mullins and Santander are even closer to being FA and I honestly don't even know if Angelos will even go for those level of players with extensions, much less superstars like Adley, Gunnar, hopefully Holliday.
Lifelong Oriole fan, the ownership here is more concerned about his pockets rather than winning. It's a shame. The Braves gave you a blueprint on how to lock up all your great young talent. They just have to follow it. Ownership has been outspoken in the media and it looks like he's plan is to not sign any of these guys long term, he continues to say they are a small market team.
@@scubastevevw I'm not an O's fan, but I definitely have heard the same things. Baltimore is a large enough market to support at least extending 2-3 of these guys. I think part of the problem is how difficult Braves model is to copy. Latin player are more willing to accept somewhat discount deals in comparison to American players. The American players that the Braves extended are pretty much all from Braves country too. Very few big leaguers come from the Os region, and even fewer that do actually grew up fans of the Os because they have been so bad for so long. And honestly, the best player from this entire core probably is Jackson, whose dad is already incredibly wealthy. He is almost guaranteed not to take a sweetheart deal for the Os. If they want to keep him, they will have to pay market value. Adley, Grayson, and Gunnar are all from far away too. I just don't see Os forking over the cash to keep all 4, much less all the complementary players like Mullins, Heston, Cowser, etc.
I don’t like the 3rd wildcard in general as it has watered things down and devalued the regular season. I would have kept the previous format but instead of the 1 game playoff, make 4vs5 a 2 out of 3 series.
Completely agree. Not only would I have made the wild card series best of three, I would put the wild card winner at a game disadvantage if its record is worse than the first division winner.
@@Michael-kt8gz yes, absolutely.
I *chokes back vomit* agree with Russo. Picking a team to play in the playoffs is a bad idea all around. I also disagree with Costas’ assertion that fans were okay with the single game knock-out for the Wild Card. I think they were pretty vocally against it, as were the teams, and now we have an appropriate series. I think the die is cast as far as a 7 game DS goes, but I like that a random #6 can win the whole thing if they get hot and win 3 of 5.
The WC Game ratings said otherwise.
They are just looking for more ways to destroy the game.
Costas is right, the regular season needs to have more value than it does now.
MLB should bring their in season tournament
Should go by wins and not division winners
@@SSNESS well how it will work it will be the same amount of teams in a division like in the regular season but the number 1 team of each group gets drawn based on winning the division the previous season. Similar to the nba in season tournament
I don’t agree with a one game series where a regular team with one hot pitcher can eliminate a far superior team. I prefer 2 out of 3 series.
Sounds like a skill issue. Win the game
Baseball is a team sport. You need 7 -8 good players not 1 or 2 great players like nba
no expansion just move the poverty franchises
I find it interesting that shows like first take, undisputed , and the Herd have zero interest in baseball or hockey?
Man, I hate this. Sounds like turning the sport into a pure business decision......which, I know it IS. But I don't want to be reminded of it
Costas is a genius. Absolutely love his playoff proposal. Made perfect sense
His playoff plan is just too damn much.
Should go by wins
Bob Costas is such a great Baseball Intellectual!
Best broadcaster too, best voice
Bob is Prime
Who was Bob ruling his eyes at lol
I'm fine with Costas's adjusted playoff structure. But only if it is absolutely no days off from season end to the start of the ALDS. You can't have the division winners taking a full week off or more before getting to play. That isn't how baseball is played. It just doesn't work. Have to play all 4 max games of the WC in 4 days with no breaks (they get the final day off if they win both games so TV schedules can be preplanned). But you can't make it 6-7 days.
I think three or four days off is reasonable. With game 163 being eliminated, the wild card rounds can start Monday.
While I agree with Bob's position, part "B" is the shortening of the regular season. As it stands, the World Series bumps against November. Adding even a few more games will push the Series over this edge. Something to think about. 🤔
He has mentioned that the season might have to be shortened to 156 or 158 games to accommodate the longer post season.
I prefer keeping the season at 162 games and giving the division winners a game advantage in the wild card and divisional rounds when their wild card opponent has a WORSE record.
The divisional races in the NL are not even close. Philadelphia is, just like last year, way behind Atlanta. If Philadelphia wins their wild card series, they would next play Atlanta again in the division series and all Atlanta gets is possibly ONE MORE home game? It's ridiculous.
Bob Costas for Commissioner
This is what I would do bob is a genius by the way but this is what I would do. I would go back to the 2012 format where you the one WC game now the team that has the best overall record gets to pick who they want to play is it the WC winner or is it the third best division winner
Costas knows his stuff. Baseball encyclopedia. Should work for MLB
Also, encyclopedic knowledge of the ABA.
Bob is so close with his playoff structure: reward the division winners for the marathon but not too much rest/rust and keep 3 wild card teams in one game elimination games where 5 hosts 6 and 4 hosts winner of 5-6 game in back to back days (no rest). Then re-rank em like NFL playoffs based on record for division series in a 7 game series; if the wild card team had a better record than the other two division leaders (like the 106 win Dodgers) they'll have to earn it through that wild card elimination game series to earn home field advantage over the other division winners. This incentivizes everyone to keep winning at the end because only the best record is guaranteed home field advantage and the other division leaders can't rest on their laurels if the wild card team was in a juggernaut battle against their division winner like '21 Giants-Dodgers (and almost to an extent '22 Braves-Mets). You want baseball fodder and media attention, you give the wild card survivor a wild chance to get home field advantage because they're in a tough division like this year's AL East
If the third division winner has a BETTER record than the third wild card, they play each other in a best of FOUR. The division winner needs two wins to advance, while the wild card needs three. The first and second wild cards play each other in a best of three.
If the third division winner has a WORSE record than the third wild card, the first wild card plays the third wild card, and the third division winner plays the second wild card. Both best of three.
If the third division winner is victorious, it plays the second division winner in a best of five. The wild card winner plays the first division winner in a best of SIX. The wild card needs four wins to advance. In other words, if a wild card advances to the divisional round and has a WORSE record than its opponent, the series is a best of SIX. The LCS and WS remain best of seven.
I'm a baseball fan either way as well as a Yankees fan, so I'll still be watching. But definitely less interest than normal with less of the big names in the playoffs this year. And I wouldn't be shocked if this is one of the lower watched MLB playoffs of the last 4-5 years. Maybe I'm wrong, but that wouldn't surprise me at all. Not having either NY team, Boston, St Louis, I still think Cubs are likely to drop out (I would prefer Reds because I like their young core more), San Francisco, San Diego, etc. If Jays drop out too, that is a massive market. So too is Dallas, which is the most likely other AL team to miss.
Dallas? 🤨
I would be for the playoffs being completely seeded by record. Both AL East teams this year should get first round byes. They have outperformed any other team in the AL by a pretty significant margin this year. I'm fine with a Central team making it in, but I think it should be completely reseeded.
Just get rid of the divisions and have the first 6 teams in each league to face off. With the team with the best record playing the team with the sixth best record in a 3 game playoff series. The second place finisher playing the fifth place finisher in a best of 3 game series and so on down the line. The next series will be a 5 game series with a trqm getting a bye and a 7 game series with the two finalists. Fir this yiu will need to play a 154 regular season or perhaps a 146 gane regular season to adjust for the additional rounds of playoff games.
@markjohnson7488 you're an awful idea.
So, the first place team, probably winning around 100 games, will play the team finishing sixth, which will have about 85 wins, and they play a best of THREE? Also, there is no incentive to finish first instead of second. There has to be more than just home field advantage, which is almost no advantage.
@@Michael-kt8gz Have you seen Minnesota's record in a weak division?
Lucky if they win 89 games and yet they win in a weak division. So why should the Twins have the same advantage as the 95 wins and counting Orioles and Rays in the stronger AL East division Twins are in a division where the second place team the Guardians will probably finish with 78 wins if they're lucky.
If the 2 out of 3 bothers you then have the 1st place team face off against the 6th place team in a 1 game playoff. Does that make you happy?
But under your format, the sixth place team is at the same advantage as the first place team.
My proposal is posted above somewhere. You can read it.
I would make two adjustments to your proposal. The teams finishing first, second, and third receive a game advantage over the fourth, fifth, and sixth place teams. Those series are best of four. Of the three teams that lose, the lowest ranked team is eliminated. The other two play a single elimination game. The winner advances with the other three winners. The next round is a best of six. The two teams with the better records receive the game advantage. If two teams finish tied, there is no game advantage for either team and the series is a best of three in the first round and best of five in the second round.
@@Michael-kt8gz OK, your proposal is fine. I agree. My main proposal is to eliminate the divisions. Then giving the three teams who finished 1st, 2nd and 3rd an advantage over the 4th , 5th and 6th place works.
I think the picking your opponent idea is genius
Stupid
Even Bob Costas counting the O’s out for the World Series. My goodness, I think the Orioles could go 162-0 on a season and they would still count them out. 🙄
The most biased commentator I have ever heard, and have a quick search it’s apparent I’m not the only one who feels this way. Nobody can enjoy a baseball game with this guy yapping.
WE WANT HOUSTON! LMAO!
I totally agree with Bob Costas on the postseason arrangement. (Forward to 6:30).
Get rid of the wildcard three game series. Go back to the two wildcard games, one for each league.
Any team that wins their division should not have to play in the wildcard game/series.
This way you don’t have the four top teams in baseball sitting around, waiting a week for their postseason to start.
Another factor to keep in mind is that the deeper into October, and even November we go, the worse the weather gets. Nobody wants to see baseball games in snow or freezing weather. In my opinion, the World Series should be over before Halloween, every single year. That way, we parents don’t have to decide whether we’re going to watch the World Series or enjoy the Halloween holiday with our children.
So please, MLB, listen to Bob! Even Chris Russo does!
I disagree with bob costas on the postseason arrangement. They should start the postseason in like end of September till early October and perhaps start the wildcard round to 5 games and keep this format. Start the division series with a 7 game series instead of the lcs. I like having the World Series on Halloween it’s kinda fun
COSTAS IS BORING
Bob's playoff proposal is one of the dumbest things I've ever heard lol. I don't love the current set up, but I'd take it 1,000/1,000 over his moronic, labyrinthine set up
What is dumb about it? The only part I did not like was the pick your opponent aspect.
Bob Costas should be the Commissioner of MLB.
He's too old,
He is too bias
