You'll be amazed how quickly you get used to the key combinations and they become 'muscle memory'. You really don't have to be a genius to use a Mac, just have a little patience.
I use both a Mac and Windows PCs and each of them have good UI things and bad UI things. The Mac commands to capture any piece of the screen were awfully slow in coming to Windows, for instance. Conversely, Windows has a very cool window snap feature that MacOS does not. One other thing that annoys me about MacOS that is probably much harder to fix is how closing an app's last window doesn't close the app. It needs a special command to exit the app.

Assign "Zoom" to a shortcut for making a window full screen, or "Move Window Left/Right Side of Screen" to other shortcuts (respectively) to get that half page snap
I am daily frustrated by Windows 10 insisting on closing an application just because I closed the last window. It makes the “I’m done with this file, now I need to work on this other file” process needlessly slower and more convoluted. And apparently it’s not just me, because Apple introduced a feature that automatically quit applications with no open windows in Lion or Mountain Lion, and I just discovered that they mostly dropped it several macOS versions ago. It’s still there, but app developers have to opt-in to the feature. And apparently very few have. (I was going to tell you how to turn it on, and then discovered it hasn’t been option users can change since like 2018. I hadn’t noticed because I _hate_ that behavior and had always disabled it, so I hadn’t noticed the fact that I couldn’t explicitly _enable_ it anymore.)

Very useful. I’ve recently come from windows to Mac and almost regret it. Like not being able to use shift to click a range of files in finder if they are in thumbnail view. You really do realise how good windows explorer is when you use finder. Windows Copy and paste and delete with one tap buttons, and especially annoying is when you paste files into a folder on Mac and some already exist, having to press shift to get the skip option instead of stop. Why did they make it so user unfriendly?
Interestingly I don't think I've ever encountered any of these except the spelling/capitalization issue. I never use Safari; most Apple software is a bit, eh, backwards. Also, I'm amazed/horrified anyone still has the dock at the bottom lol. Everyone should use the left hand side.
It's funny how you can tell when someone's an old Mac user, I love 3 finger drag, I'm pretty sure that used to be the default, then they suddenly turned it into a hidden accessibility feature : /. There is one more that I'd like to add to this list, tapping on a word with 3 fingers to bring up the dictionary entry for the word: In System Settings -> Trackpad -> enable "Look up & data detectors". Now when you click on a word with 3 fingers, it'll pop up a little dictionary entry for the word.
Thanks for another excellent video of tips! What I wish I could change in Mac OS is adding the suffix to created documents (.psd .pdf .docx .xlsx and so on) without adding the suffix to the application names. Having the suffix visible is helpful when sending documents to non-Mac users, so that they (and their Windows machine) can open it. There is a setting to make the suffix visible, but when activating it, every piece of data, including Applications, displays its suffix, and not just documents. As it stands now, I have to click command i (for information) and then uncheck hide data suffix, but I have to do this with each individual document. Having the suffix added (made visible) to Application names makes me feel like I’m using DOS.
Hey enjoy your content. One thing that drives me nuts is the inability to delete multiple texts at once in iMessage. Is there a command for that? Wish it was as simple as it is on the iPhone and iPad.
Great and useful content and presentation as usual! I think the very useful "AutoFill" feature present in apple devices deserves to be discussed further because for me it is a hit or miss on iOS, iPadOS and MacOS.. (I am referring to manually inserting info from contacts or passwords as you write). This is very useful in different situations however it doesn't always work! As an example, in Apple store if you want to download an app and password protection is on, the field for writing down the iCloud password is not autofill compatible. However on iOS you can long-press and manually select autofill and then passwords. Now, if you choose and press the correct password to insert nothing happens. I have noticed manual autofill glitches like this across all Apple's OSs. It is very annoying because the workaround is time consuming.. Not being fixed definitely deserves some HATE!

When I finish for the day, I turn off the power-brick for my macbook, and let it SLEEP on battery overnight so I'm not wasting electricity with a 70w power-brick when the macbook isn't actually being used. But I also have an external monitor that I power-down and turn off at the mains overnight for the same reason - to save on electricity. *But* when I turn everything back on in the morning, my macbook never _automatically_ finds or activates my external monitor. I have to physically unplug and re-plug-in the thunderbolt-to-HDMI cable for my macbook to recognise that I have an external monitor connected. I never had this issue with my old Windows laptop. It just knew about my external monitor and as soon as that had power the external monitor would wake-up and connect and work. There must be a better way, surely? How can I have my macbook _automatically_ recognise that I have an external monitor as soon as I power everything back on? Please?!
One more annoyance while using the "open 'safe' files automatically". If you're downloading a zip file, it automatically unzips it! Which is not something you always want! Sometimes, zips are meant to be used as such. So having MacOS unzip them becomes really frustrating. Fortunately there's a fix for that. And it's the same as for automatically opening media.
I’m a very long time Mac user, going back to 1984 when they were introduced, and a couple things that I’ve come to hate are the new organization of the System Settings as you mentioned. I’ve also come to hate that I frequently accidentally quit application, such as Safari and Mail! So to that end, I’ve remapped Command+Q to be Shift+Command+Q so that I accidentally quit.
One of my pet peeves on a MAC has been its need to copy things rather than move them. Would like to have a tip on how to move files from one place to anther without having to go back and delete the files because my mac has chose to copy them instead.
Dragging any window with 3 fingers works if the cursor is placed on the toolbar or upper part of said window. No need to activate that setting under accessibility.
Most annoying thing for the MAC is, if you connect a monitor you need to click on the second screen to active it. It has fix with third party software but I don't know why it is not like as PC.
I always found MacOS' "natural scrolling" VERY unnatural. Especially when using a mouse! But even on a trackpad, I still find it confusing. On a touch-screen, that makes sense. But on a computer with a mouse and keyboard, that is really annoying.
When "right clicking" the system setting icon in the dock using a two finger tap, it displays the standard contextual dock menu: Options, show all windows, hide, quit. How can I "right click" on system settings in the dock and display all available parts of that app?
right-clicking on the system icon in dock does not show the list on my MacBook Air - I just get a popup for options. Any ideas why or what I have to do to get the list? Great set of tips btw
Helpful. Thanks. But when I right-click on the Settings icon in the dock, it does not show the many Settings panes in alphabetical order. Do I need to change a setting to see this? :) Yes, I am using maOS 14.1.1.
I still get annoyed at the lack of a "New File" context menu in Finder. Sometimes I'm already in the folder where I want to create a file but I still have to open an app and navigate to the folder there
Is there any way I can #1. Create a new folder in Finder in the *selected* folder and not the root? and #2. Move the Finder “Save As” box in a browser so I can see the file behind?
Great video, keep up the good work. Do you know how to stop macbook from waking up the screen every few mins while its docked. It started happening after Sonoma, and I have tried everything but cant stop it. I have to turn off my monitor to stop looking at it.
I’d add the following. macOS sucks with file management on many levels. From wanting to merge folders and macOS just overwrites them over it planting hidden files on removable storage that disrupts its usage in other devices to it not being able to write to certain network drives correctly, like when you write on a public drive while being logged into an account it basically locks the written files to that account, even tho it’s on the public drive.
Is there a way to click on settings -- keyboard -- and request a better keyboard? Literally the only way to create more travel in that keyboard is to throw it out the window.
Apple can't seem to make a functional taskbar or individual volume setting per app. Two of the biggest annoyances. Also I don't need Stocks and bunch of other bloatware preinstalled, that I can't uninstall. I honestly don't like Mac OS just got for the ARM chip battery thing
WIndow management is the most annoying thing for me. Every solution has a gotcha. The Alt-Tab app is a fix, but you have to trust that the developer is a good guy.
So what drives me crazy Is that the screenshot get saved to the desktop and I can't figure out how to Set them to save to a specification Like the photos inside of a folder that says screenshots
Could be an ace idea of video of someone using a Mac coming from Windows? Ie how to shift from a logical experience to Mac and how someone can make Mac more like windows.
I don't think making your macOS more like Windows is a great idea. Apple has put some thought into their system, reinventing it, will only harm your experience in the long run. Instead, new users should adopt how the OS should be operated instead of forcing it to be something it's not. If you want to have a Windows experience, you should use Windows. Most videos I saw for new macOS users always tried to force the Windows way onto macOS. There is a reason why you don't have windows snapping on macOS, that's because you are better off using applications in full screen mode instead. When I learned this after switching to macOS a bit of a year ago, I switched from three monitors to just one, because it worked even better than using all the screen real-estate from the multiple monitors. I am much more focused on the task at hand as I don't get overloaded by all the open applications and I stay way more organized as I can simply swipe or scroll through my applications instead of rearranging them over and over again across my multiple monitors. I don't even need to use Cmd + Tab to switch through applications, I just scroll through them like on my iPad or iPhone. That's the intended way of using macOS. Using it like Windows will only give you headaches
I've downloaded the MOS app, but can't install it. The System says "“Mos” can’t be opened because Apple cannot check it for malicious software. This software needs to be updated. Contact the developer for more information." How did you install it?
'They just work the way you want them to'? Thats funny. They're good computers, and I own one. But if you're trying to use a mac in the business world, you'll quickly find out how wrong this statement is. Glad you're enjoying your mac experience though. And great video as always.
Do you know how to copy a screenshot to the clipboard after marking it up? I frequently take screenshots and right click then do Save to Clipboard. But if instead you left click on the little screenshot preview and mark up the image (draw a box, draw an arrow etc) then I can’t find a way to just copy this to the clipboard. I have to save it to my desktop instead which I find a bit cumbersome. Hope you can help!
@Proper Honest Tech I really hate this about my macbook pro, but how do you get it so bluetooth doesn’t automatically turn on by itself. It happens every so often when I turn on my mbp and I can’t seem to find anything in the bluetooth menu and always have to manually turn it off when I notice, which is annoying since I’ve never even attempted to pair devices to my laptop
Like many people apple hardware is great but the operating system drives nuts. I can't retain a head full of keystrokes that others just rattle off "Oh it's just command shift 5 " or whatever.
I am in dark mode because I find it easier on the eyes. It is frustrating when typing because the blue i-beam text insertion point is practically invisible and I cannot find a way to change its color. A solution to that would be appreciated.
When you leave your cursor near the left side of Safari, it automatically brings up a resize arrow to view the Bookmarks bar. How can I turn this off? It's extremely distracting and annoying.
Great video! :) What I personally hate is behaviour regarding USB charged devices. I have two devices, M1 Macbook Pro and M2 Pro Mac Mini. On both of these devices I use my external sound card Focusrite Scarlet 2i4 2nd gen and what happens is its turning off and on again USB ports which cause constantly shutting off and on my sound card and by this it makes a big noise from my studio monitors. I can understand why this is happening on a Macbook cause it can provide power only to certain voltage but on a Mac Mini? I dont understand that. Workaround for now is to adjust settings to not enter Sleep Mode on battery/charger and it works fine now but this is so freaking annoying. Anyone with this issue? If yes, how do you deal with it?
You know what grinds my gears about macos... the spinning up of external harddiscs, every 5 minutes or so, while the laptop is closed so in sleep mode. why... WHY!?
Hitting cmd + Q while trying to type @ in a Latin American keyboard and closing the current window is the most ffffing annoying thing EVER. I absolutely hate Mac OS because of that (and many more reasons)
Am I really the only person who hates tap to click?! That seems to be on every single Mac tips video and list I've come across. Apple does push down to click right.
I think Apple make overpriced crap that never works the way you want to - I have to use one for a specific piece of software. Thank the gods for Linux. One of my many pet hates is the fact that the menu bar is attached to the top of the screen rather than the relevant window. Is there a fix for that? And automatically shifting the focus to whichever window is under the cursor? And YES - the fact that the browser (I don't use Safari) doesn't save your tabs when you close it!
I'm using MacBooks and Windows PC. I don't emote but adapt myself to what they're capable of to be productive. In the same manner when I use different Linux flavors on a Linux machine. Adapting is so much better than emoting.
This. That's why most people don't get about different operating systems. They are not Windows, don't make them like Windows, don't use them like Windows. Use them like they are intended to be used
The backspace button deletes words so much faster and the word is gone. I'm convinced that people just want to complain about things! Genuine brain damage...
The reason for 3D touch on trackpad is so you don’t have to lift your finger. How don’t you enjoy that? You simply move your finger around all the time and when you want to click something you just press harder. No need to lift the finger. Much faster and easier because you don’t have to double tab. This way it’s also easier to move around windows instead of three finger drag
It'd be great if you could tackle these issue as well, please: 1) Swipe up with three fingers reveals open windows - but they always change arrangement/order 2) No way to know if there is another window hiding behind the main window, e.g. Mail. I know Exposé but to do it always to check if there is a window open or not is nuisance 3) Sharing photos via WhatsApp: there is no extension for the Photos app, so the only way is via exporting them. I am talking about photos from iCloud originally taken on your iPhone. These are not files. 4) Double-tapping on the top of a window not always maximises it, despite it being set in the settings. Each app behaves differently. Some work, others don't 5) Apps open in the middle of the screen not maximised, even when I previously maximise them, force quit and re-open. 6) There're plenty more :-)
One of the most frustrating issues I've encountered on Mac is with the Finder, especially when using multiple desktops. If you have a Finder window open on desktop 1 and click on the Finder icon on desktop 2, it takes you back to desktop 1. There are a couple of workarounds: (1) By assigning Finder to all desktops, but that can become quite messy. (2) Pressing Option+Command+Spacebar to invoke a Searchbar instance in Finder (regardless of desktop). Does anyone have a solution for this? I'd greatly appreciate any advice or tips on how to resolve this!"
**Every** desktop environment I have used on Linux handles virtual desktops much better than what macOS does. I really don't understand why Apple can't figure this out. Just give me a hot key that switches to another desktop. and make "alt tab" (command tab) constrained to the applications running in that virtual desktop. Also, I don't really need fancy animations. Just DO THE THING.
@@tomv3999oh, ugh, no! Then I’d have to first remember which desktop the window I want is on, switch to that desktop, and _then_ switch to that window. That’s no improvement. The whole reason that macOS’s virtual desktops are so great is how seamless they are - that I can separate things out into separate desktops but I_don’t_ have to think about those desktops except when I want to. Besides, the behavior you want is already there: swipe up to show all windows and you’ll only see the windows of your current desktop, until/unless you poke the top of the screen to expand the other virtual desktops. Assign a keyboard shortcut if you don’t want to use the trackpad/mouse for that. There are significant problems with macOS’s virtual desktops, but the fact that windows and programs don’t just “disappear” because they’re not on the current desktop isn’t one of them.
If you hover your cursor over the dock of the desired desktop before launching finder, it gets set to that desktop. I think I learned this from watching another RUclips video about macOS hacks. Perhaps it's a clumsy solution, but it's become second nature to me now to do this before launching finder. You can just dip the cursor over the dock and then launch finder your usual way.
How on Earth could the scrolling be working improperly on external display? I mean, how could they have passed such a bug to the release version and not yet get that fixed?
It could be more to do with Logitech who use proprietary mouse software. I haven't experienced it though on my Logitech and I always run a minimum of 2 external displays.
New to macOS and I was having this issue with my Logitech from jump street, but thought it was more like a resource issue with my macBook. Installed Mos but it throws a security block and as my macBook is company provided I'm not going to override that. Shame about the recommendation for a tool that doesn't meet macOS requirements.
I’m equally baffled. Maybe this is specific to the Apple Silicon MacBooks, for some reason? My Mac Mini by definition only has external displays, and I sometimes hook an external display up to my MacBook Air, and I’ve never encountered the scrolling direction spontaneously resetting, let alone resetting for just one display. And I’m using a Logitech mouse, and have been since Apple replaced the Mighty Mouse with the Magic Mouse.
I usually like shift+cmd+4 for screenshots. Don’t think theres any padding added when doing it that way but you do need to drag the mouse/trackpad to define the space of the shot. Thanks for all the tips!!
A critical note. If you buy the larger Magic keyboard from Apple, there is a Delete button on it, much like the DEL button on the PC. It is the 2nd button below the F13 button. Thank you for all the video's and the proper weekly which I receive for some time now.
the absolute worst thing about Mac OS: when switching between screens it requires a click to change focus to that screen before any further input. hate!
Settings is one of the things I removed from my dock since I know where it is on the Apple menu. Once it is opened you are right, it is daunting. The same alphabetical list of settings drops down if you click the View menu when Settings are open.
Helpful actionable info appreciated. As an atrocious speller, I appreciate macOS autocorrect/spellcheck (....with ability to override when/as). The screenshot padding terminal code hack is very much appreciated! 💯👍🖖

Hey, could you let me know how you did that? I'm also quitting Safari a bunch of times without wanting to. Cheers!
How about that caps lock indicator with Sonoma! Lots of people hate that. You have to use terminal to shut it off.
One of my pet peeves on a MAC has been its need to copy things rather than move them. Would like to have a tip on how to move files from one place to anther without having to go back and delete the files because my mac has chose to copy them instead.
There's another issue you might take up. It's a Zombie email that's somehow tagged such that deleting it doesn't work. It comes back in a few minutes.
Hate what they did to system preferences in Ventura
The thing I hated the most was mouse acceleration, and they finally made it an option in the mouse advanced settings !
Dragging any window with 3 fingers works if the cursor is placed on the toolbar or upper part of said window. No need to activate that setting under accessibility.
Some great tips here! Thank you 🙂
The amount of keyboard shortcuts someone has to remember on Mac seems to be endless. 😅
It's always "hold down xyz while pressing abc to... ."
THREE FINGER DRAG!!!!!!
THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH!!!!
What about the desktop wallpaper changing back to the default everytime you connect / disconnect from an external display?
It was doing this CONSTANTLY to me, but seems fixed in OS Sonoma?
When "right clicking" the system setting icon in the dock using a two finger tap, it displays the standard contextual dock menu: Options, show all windows, hide, quit. How can I "right click" on system settings in the dock and display all available parts of that app?
right-clicking on the system icon in dock does not show the list on my MacBook Air - I just get a popup for options. Any ideas why or what I have to do to get the list? Great set of tips btw
Because the Settings app is already open
Helpful. Thanks. But when I right-click on the Settings icon in the dock, it does not show the many Settings panes in alphabetical order. Do I need to change a setting to see this? :) Yes, I am using maOS 14.1.1.
Weird. Never ever experienced the reverse scrolling mouse issue on external monitors since natural scrolling was introduced. Or before.
I still get annoyed at the lack of a "New File" context menu in Finder. Sometimes I'm already in the folder where I want to create a file but I still have to open an app and navigate to the folder there
Thanks, returning to Macs is a big regret now and it has only been 16 days.
Is there any way I can #1. Create a new folder in Finder in the *selected* folder and not the root? and #2. Move the Finder “Save As” box in a browser so I can see the file behind?
I can really recommend the free app linear mouse as well. It's really fixes all the acceleration problems.
There are so many problems and solutions, that I would rather wait for another video or two first :)
I don't wanna be dramatic, but CMD+Delete just changed my life.
Why are you using spotlight to search settings when the settings pane has its own built in search box?
Command and Space.
Um ... great tips, as always, but I noticed that you used Cmd+Space to open both the Terminal and Spotlight search - ??
I've downloaded the MOS app, but can't install it. The System says "“Mos” can’t be opened because Apple cannot check it for malicious software. This software needs to be updated. Contact the developer for more information." How did you install it?
Well, the most frustrating "feature" on the Mac for me is the storage space taken by the system.
You're too funny. 😱 but I can't disagree.
Hold CTRL in addition to Shift and CMD
I have a "delete"button on all my Mac keyboards (3) . They seem to work just fine!
Thanx for the Video! 8 of 10 i did not know ;-)
How to minimize an app by clicking on an icon in task bar?
When you leave your cursor near the left side of Safari, it automatically brings up a resize arrow to view the Bookmarks bar. How can I turn this off? It's extremely distracting and annoying.
Logitech’s software has the ability to change the scroll wheel’s direction.
Great video! :)
What I personally hate is behaviour regarding USB charged devices.
I have this issue as well. Which menu did you turn off the Sleep Mode on your desktop Mac?
@@FrostByte_AC Depends on what device you have. Its not the same on Macbook and on Mac Mini. :)
Loks like the MOS download won't install on a Macbook Air M3.
Are you running the beta of OS Sequoia?
I find very little to like about Sonoma.
You know what grinds my gears about macos... the spinning up of external harddiscs, every 5 minutes or so, while the laptop is closed so in sleep mode. why... WHY!?
For me, Right-Click on System Settings doesn't bring up a list. Just docking options.
Same here - it happened because my system settings were already opened. After closing the system settings with cmd - Q the right click worked.
Control + D = Delete, also
MOS for Mac can't be opened. A window says it "needs to be updated" "because Apple cannot check it for malicious software".
downloads i have them off by default to not run installers do not open unless I do it windows reopening auto I have them offon logout
Thanks!
Thank you very much, I really appreciate your support!
I hate macOS, the luck of NTFS support and the system cache. M2 is fast though. Next time I stick with Windows or Linux.
Nay,… I prefere the window’s shadows!!!
And that’s why Mac OS is the worst option for people that need to get things done.
Use them like they are intended to be used
I could probably make a list of a hundred things I dislike about macos. Apple makes beautiful monitors, but that's about it.
The backspace button deletes words so much faster and the word is gone. I'm convinced that people just want to complain about things! Genuine brain damage...
You can fix them all at once by buying a PC.
Apple made the best products, except they’re not good enough.
6) There're plenty more :-)
To check for any secondary windows you can use ⌘ + ` to alternate between windows of the same application.
@@tomv3999 control + left/right arrow for switching desktops. also fancy animations have functional significance.
if you want to use finder on desktop 2, create a new finder window on desktop 2
Your verb conjugation makes me realize I need therapy because it shouldn’t have that much power over my mood (🇺🇸🇺🇸🦅🦅🇺🇸🇺🇸)
A critical note. If you buy the larger Magic keyboard from Apple, there is a Delete button on it, much like the DEL button on the PC. It is the 2nd button below the F13 button.
Thank you for all the video's and the proper weekly which I receive for some time now.
The first thing you need to do is delete chrome and never use it again. They are datamining your life.
the absolute worst thing about Mac OS: when switching between screens it requires a click to change focus to that screen before any further input. hate!
That's why I only use one screen now haha and I don't even regret it. Keeps me well more focused
