Loads of people would be angry at you for selling/trading it, but they don't realize that trading/selling this stuff is what our hobby keeps us getting our money back, so we can buy a NEW awesome thing !! :D
And if it gets used and appreciated by the next owner, then it's all good. Better to sell on and share the love of the hobby than to leave it languishing on a shelf.

There’s a video on YT somewhere of Jobs on his return back to Apple and they also unveil the TAM at the same time and he takes a look at it - and you just know in his head he’s thinking “wtf have you done with this.”
Regarding the subwoofer’s volume knob: a long time ago I purchased a Performa 6400 for literally £1; the only physical damage was that the integrated subwoofer was set to maximum volume and couldn’t be turned down - which I discovered when I decided to play _ShadowWraith_ and the game’s startup SFX (“Bioclone activated”) was loud enough to be heard in the street :/
You made the right call. I don't know why; I'm a hardcore Mac collector, but I've never found the TAM that compelling. I think it looked amazing in its day but it just looks dated now. You got the better end of the deal with the Lisa.. that's really cool that he was willing to swap with you. They are going for far more than the TAMs lately. Enjoy!
"In its day" I can vouch for the fact that everyone who ever looked at it ALWAYS had to walk up closer, and peer around the back, because there was essentially no other desktop computers that used an LCD - everyone was looking for the "rest" of the computer. (Yes, I believe Sony had an LCD-based desktop before the TAM, but it was not a mainstream device, though nor was the TAM with only 12,000 made.)

It was meant to echo the original Macs in some way: a rectangle within a larger rectangle, but in the original form followed function., while there's no economy of design. It's literally all "front", just to show off the new thin-screen tech. It makes no sense to put the optical disc player vertically, and then hide the floppy drive. They should both be equally hidden, or at least "discrete," in the same way.
TAMs used to come up on eBay pretty regularly, but these days they are becoming rarer and rarer. I imagine by this point in time, 27 years later, that a great many TAMs from the original 12,000 production run are now in landfill. Great news for the value of my TAM with all original packaging but hey, I'd prefer there to still be a lot of them out in the wild being enjoyed...
I have one that's almost never been used. Bought two of them from a friend who had worked at Apple at the time. He used the hell out of one of them (and it showed.) I gave that one to a Mac friend of mine a long time ago -- it's life is mostly "CD player" these days. All the "upgrades" he's done to his absolutely ruins it. ('tho it has made it only slightly more usable.)
Hearing that most TAMs have issues with the disc cover makes me thankful that mine still works great. I’m the original owner and am gonna keep taking care of it!
I never knew much about the TAM. I always imagined it was super high tech for it's time but to learn that its just a Macintosh Powerbook in a different form factor makes me kinda scratch my head about what Apple was thinking. Good video, glad it went to a collector who will care for it.

And I remember reading about the Lisa in a bunch of old computer magazines that were given to me when I was like 10 and began fixing family and friends computers and acquiring second hand tech and cobbling it together in bizzare ways. Never owned or sawa a Lisa in real life though sadly, at least not yet. But I did just see a documentary here on YT last night about em: Before Macintosh: The Apple Lisa" Full Documentary Film, Free. I can't wait to see what you come up with! :)

I remember in the late 80's or early 90's there was some company that had bought up a large haul of Apple Lisas, and was updating them to run (then) current MacOS systems. Didn't have the money for one then (with the value on them now, *still* don't have the money) but it was one of those systems I lusted after.

11:04 Yikes, yeah that is exactly why I'm not plugging in my Mac ED and Mac Plus again until I get the RIFA caps replaced with some modern Y2 safety capacitors. I inspected their analog boards earlier this year and those RIFAs look ready to pop as soon as I plug in a power cable.

I feel you, I found a TAM at a thrift store in Sandpoint Idaho last year with a Sonnent Cache upgrade. I ended up selling it for a pretty good amount but in hindsight I wish I never did. Excited for the new content!

The neat thing about the TAM _is_ because it's a desktop made with laptop parts. Imagine in modern day, a Framework 16" built similarly to a TAM. It would be spectacular.
I know you can run OS XX on a TAM with a G3 upgrade, but given the way this one was updated, I'd be very cautious! Trying to instal OS X on a normal TAM results in bricking the machine. Been there, screamed that. Days spent sitting in internet cafes (back when they were a thing) trying to find a way to un-brick it...
@@axi0matic Thankfully there was a way to fix it - you had to unplug the mains power, remove the PRAM battery, and then use a paperclip or similar to short out the pins where the PRAM battery connects to the logic board and leave it for a while like that - ie I think I was told half an hour, probably doesn't need all that time, but I left it overnight. Hearing the start-up chime the next day was beautiful.
Psyched to see the upcoming Lisa content! I picked one up not that long ago (with original box, materials, etc.) so I’ll be looking for inspiration 😄. All I’ve done so far is fix the PSU by replacing all the Rifas, which I expect you’ll have in a future video.
Back in the day... I wanted one of those TAMs just a tad more than a ridiculously droolworthy amount. Still would like one today; although just like you alluded too it would likely just end up gathering dust on a shelf. Nonetheless, I would have used the heck out of this 20+ years ago --even if it was my overly expensive CD player with the BOSE subwoofer. Heck, I am still drooling about it! Man, that thing is a work of art!
But even if an electronic device is not used in a long time, it can cost random issues so the best way is to give that electronic device who in need or wanted.
That was a great swap. You got both videos/money and joy from the TAM and now someone else will get joy from it. Great video. I have a question as you are always pushing the limits. What would it take to make the original Mac LC a 32-bit clean system? Would it require reverse engineering a motherboard to add an Motorola 688851 chip for PMMU and more memory slots or working out a way to but the rom from the Mac IIci, which was the first 32-bit clean mac?
That was such an odd, interesting, and tragic machine. Sad to see this "abomination" upgraded one go, but I totally understand why. Hope we get to see some fun from it when it goes to a good home and gets lots of love and use.
Aww man, I was hoping we'd get one last video where you 3D printed a matching back cover with ventilation holes. Oh well, I am glad the G3 TAM is getting a nice forever home as all retro Macs should!
It would have been neat to have used the TAM's TV in capability (with a video camera and a vcr) to make your wallpaper snapshot, but the Mavica is cool retro now and probably about 10x easier. It's astounding how much these TAM computers cost back in the day.
I owned a Lisa at one point that I purchased for $10. The video was messed up and I was unable to fix, so I passed it onto a friend of mine in Iowa. Was a “future project” machine for years and never got to it. So also I share the pain at letting stuff go. But you can pry the upgraded Commodores I own from my cold dead 8-bit hands. ;) Never going to give those up.
It's a big shame I really loved seeing you work on it I was hoping to see more experiments and stuff done with it in the future to further upgrade it somehow
In the early '90s, I saw a Lisa running MacOS at a garage sale. He wanted less than $100, but I didn't see a reason to have an old Mac, let alone much larger Lisa, running old MacOs.
I had the dubious chance to play with the very first MacIntosh almost upon release when I was a teen, and I was at the time really nonplussed by the insane limitations of those computers compared to about everything else on the market. You couldn't program for the Mac from the Mac, at the time. Sadly, the Lisa, on the other hand, I've ever only seen advertised in computer magazines, and even though it was soon very clear it was a dead end, I've always been itching to use one in person. You are a lucky man.
Checks out. When you said you were getting rid of the Frankenstein'd Twentieth Anniversary Mac for a weird computer, there aren't a lot of things weirder, but a Lisa sure is.
Nothing wrong with trading it, especially if it's to someone that's going to enjoy it again. It's too easy to let stuff sit unused on a shelf and I personally trade old machines all the time. Keep things interesting and discover new machines I say!
@@squirlmy Actually, computers channel airflow through them. Generally, they don't cool as well leaving them open. So a cover usually helps keep them cooler.
@@axi0matic Yes, I saw the alternate cover in some of the videos. However, I think he put so many cards in that they probably would not fit inside the official thick cover. That is why I suggested a 3d printed cover for his rat's nest of upgrades.

2:22 not related to the video, but does your camera by any chance have a USB port? my camera (Canon EOS 60D) has one, and I've used that ever since I got my microsd card corrupted for some reason (the dongle was probably garbage) its basically going to show it as a camera on your computer but you still can access its sd card storage I dont know what kind of camera you're using, but hopefully this helps atleast a bit

This is a bit late, but I wonder if you could have 3d printed a cover to go over all of that crap which stuck out the back of the TAM.
I think it came with an alternate thick cover. There are expansion slots at the back, so Apple did provide the option to put cards there.
The upgrades would run hot! You don't want to enclose things that need maximum airflow for cooling!

my camera (Canon EOS 60D) has one, and I've used that ever since I got my microsd card corrupted for some reason (the dongle was probably garbage)
its basically going to show it as a camera on your computer but you still can access its sd card storage
I dont know what kind of camera you're using, but hopefully this helps atleast a bit
A lot of cameras only have USB 2.0 ports. My SD card reader is USB 3.1 so much much faster.
