I know someday you’ll have a beautiful life, I know you’ll be a star, in somebody’s else’s sky, but why, why, why can’t it be, can’t it be in mine. That is pure poetry!
This was back when MTV was still good and actually played music. I still don't fully understand why, but their Unplugged series somehow created some of the most amazing live performances of all time!
It's because music was still being created by musicians. A great song is a great song regardless of how it's performed when it's done by talented musicians with no use of autotune.
I agree with you so much on this! From Alice In Chains, Nirvana to Pearl Jam, MTV Unplugged was amazing. Now it's all bs. I miss the great music videos and Unplugged performances
I heard Black on the radio hundreds of times and never knew what it was about or really gave it much consideration. Then a few years ago I saw the unplugged version from MTV. I don't believe I've ever heard a sadder song, and what a fantastic performance. Thanks to this song this old hippie decoverd all the great grunge bands l would of missed. So glad Pearl Jam has been able to survive.
Pearl Jam's Album "Ten" is Flawless as a record.....Members of this band served their apprenticeship with other bands Like Green River and Mother love bone so, in my opinion, this is perfection.
Exactly. I feel so privileged to have grown up in that era, to have seen them live in concert for the first time touring for the Ten album (in ‘92 i think, since the album was released in August 1991). I would’ve been 16 or 17. I didn’t fully realize how good I really had it back then, and that was definitely a great era for music- growing up and coming of age mainly in the 80s and 90s, like the Gen X kid I am. (I’m 46)
I used to live in the Seattle area and I actually got to meet Eddie Vedder once, at a Trader Joe's of all things. He was the most humble guy you could ever ask for. I told him that his song Black on Unplugged was the most epic I'd ever heard and he smiled and said, "Not bad for a guy who had a cold that day." I shook his hand and let him be. It's my opinion that Pearl Jam releases records to give us a hint of what we'll see live. Their studio albums always pale in comparison to what they present live, and that's something practically all bands can't boast. Pearl Jam is ALWAYS better live.
These MTV Unplugged concerts were amazing! Pearl Jam was an incredible live band back then. I'm sure they still are! Eddie was always an extremely passionate performer, and the whole band was super high energy live. Their performance from the early 90s at Pinkpop is definitely worth checking out!
Ugh, I wish people would stop doing that. This is Eddie's ballad, the most powerful and deepest of any of the songs they wrote; this performance better than any other. If people are going to listen to any Pearl Jam songs, they need to do it BEFORE this one. All of the others are lesser.
Hey Ashley. I loved your Reaction to Pearl Jam's BLACK. I had the exact same reaction. One big thing I noticed and was so impressed with, was that the live version of almost every one of their songs is like the studio version. Thank you for sharing your 'Reaction'.
I always find myself listening to this version of the song over the original. His vocals here are incredible. To this day, the best live performance I have ever heard.
Lol "If you can't appreciate this man right here, then... I don't know what you're doing with your life." Lol, classic, great reaction and video, keep up the great work 😎🦙
"If you can't appreciate this man...I don't know what you're doing with your life". LOL, I love that!! Women STILL falling in love with Eddie Vedder all these years later! I've loved him since the start, Pearl Jam is brilliant.
PJ are very rare, in the fact, that they are better live then in the the studio. You can find over 25 years of recordings of all their concerts, not as bootlegs but released by the band.
Funny enough Black didn’t get any air time (at all) in Australia. In fact even after working in radio I’d never heard it till recently. May I say after watching “all” the other reaction channels on this yours has been the best hands down. Jeremy is a 😢sad song about suicidal teenager and nothing to do with a mass shooter. Pearl Jam stopped making videos after Jeremy for this reason alone. In my opinion and it’s mentioned in Michael J Fox’s Biography “Given to fly would have to be the best most uplifting song ever written. Unfortunately it wasn’t included in this unplugged series from Melbourne Park Australia. Love to know why they performed unplugged at the Melbourne Tennis Centre nevertheless as you mentioned the mixing and sound quality is second to none. 🎉Happy New Year 24 House of marsh.
Of course we want you to listen to/watch the Jeremy video. That's a given. There should not be a question in your mind that you would, of course, watch/listen to that, even if no one said anything about it, one way or the other. So, yes. Do that. Also, my favorite live version of a Pearl Jam song is "State of Love & Trust" from the Unplugged show. Definitely see that!
This is an example of how good the music and the singers were back in the 90s. There's deep meaning to every song. A good friend of Eddie, Chris Cornell is another phenomenon vocalist. Hunger Strike gives me the goose bumps listening to it.
Any of their songs are great, in my opinion. For an outstanding live experience check out the song “Better Man” live at Madison Square Garden N.Y. (5-21-2010).
Spotify search: Pearl Jam Go to discography Find the live performances section Scroll down to the beginning it's the very first one. 23-5-2000 Lisbon, Portugal *Daughter*
MrDabulls23, I actually bought the CD from that concert off Pearl Jam's website. That whole show is amazing and Better Man, like you said, was awesome. I'm 99% sure that's the MSG show where Eddie kind of cried a bit when the crowd was singing the first few verses.
Live and studio sounded the same back then... if not, then pretty damn close. Back when I would go to see both international and local live music weekly. It was great when singers couldn't mask their lack of true talent with autotune (started being used in '98), like a lot do today. Unfortunately, the 'look' of a performer seems to be what it's all about these days, rather than the actual musical talent itself... tho I am speaking generally here. There is absolutely still talent out there... its just bloody hard to find. I am hoping it will change and we will get a resurgence of great (rock/punk/alternative) music again, cos the true talent hasn't just disappeared... they are out there somewhere. It's great that these reaction channels have a lot of young people enjoying and being inspired by this 'older' stuff. Bring it on! By the way, if you ever get to see PJ live, don't miss it... they can still captivate and rock an audience 'old school' like no other.
Eddie Vedder right there.. Makes your heart levitate your body... This man.. This band... Unparalleled. Do Jeremy next please... This mtv unplugged version or video... What ever you choose. Great reaction. You can feel... and listen❤️
Only MTV unplugged version tops the studio. And I've listened to a lot of live performances. There's 1 time with a nice guitar solo but that was it. *July 19, 2003 Mexico* (it's on Spotify,, he messes up in the beginning)
Here in Seattle it started because everyone wanted something else. The so called Grunge is just music, granted from a geography that has almost nine months of rain does influence, hell I was born here I admit it. That's why underground clubs flourished,or parties in North Bend and Issaquah.
Check out "Given to fly" pearl jam 07 touring band 2000. woman giving sign language too crowd . Pretty amazing could be one of the coolest moments at a live show ever. Enjoy
Eddie Vedder the man with the better voice than prerecorded, My saddest song Given to Fly my mate went to London and was confronted by 4 black guys who he fought off they stabbed him 2 days later he died of internal bleeding this song fits my friend RIP my dearest friend you are really missed by all here.
It's a pretty common opinion that this is better/more impactful than the studio version. I for one will listen to this one more often even on Spotify etc.
Great reaction. You should watch the whole show. It is not that long. Jeff, Stone, Mike and Dave are fantastic and Ed is just Ed. They are a live band.
Some advice from a grunge head back in the day. You feel this, you don't analyse it. And do some more research in particular on this song. PJ never wanted to release this as a single as it was too personal. They were pushed to by the record co and in protest, refused to do a video. Still got near the top of the charts. Peace.
Yea instead of bitter hands shake beneath the clouds. He says the 2 intro to chorus of hands cradle broken glass in this one. Just a slip I think but it’s so good it didn’t matter
Very good reaction. Big regards from Chile South America. Please react Porch this is amazing song .. About the movies recommend you soundtrack Twins Peaks
It was never released as a single! They released alive ace then even flow but this actually wasn’t released as a single even though was best song on the album
Americans missed Brit Pop and Britts missed Grunge. Probably no Americans appreciate Britt Pop which happened at the Same Time as Grunge. You both should wake up and find the the one you missed! i Love BOTH.
Also, just by the hat I SWEAR the singer/songwriter of Four Non Blondes, Linda Perry plays guitar too. But it has never been denied so her BADASSERY is canon.
I like the reaction but, you are talking over the song a lot. Maybe try and listen and pause. Or just listen because it takes from the experience a bit. Over all though, good job
Completely agree. Unplugged had some great stuff. VH1 had an unplugged-like show that was pretty great as well.
It's because music was still being created by musicians. A great song is a great song regardless of how it's performed when it's done by talented musicians with no use of autotune.

Hard to find a better live performance than this one, it’s a real masterpiece!
This is better than the studio version.

This song never gets old for those that have been through similar heartaches, life flashes before your eyes/black
Well, thats about every man in the world. Bitches aint loyal.
I watch a lot of reactions and you’re the only one to point out how great the “do do doo hoo do do dooos” are
Pearl Jam's Album "Ten" is Flawless as a record.....Members of this band served their apprenticeship with other bands Like Green River and Mother love bone so, in my opinion, this is perfection.
Then Vs came out and was more flawless
Amen. Well said.
Exactly. The best sounds reach deep inside your soul, a place we have tucked away and tried to avoid dealing with.
It's the best kind of music to me.
I used to live in the Seattle area and I actually got to meet Eddie Vedder once, at a Trader Joe's of all things. He was the most humble guy you could ever ask for. Such an amazingly emotional performance. Thanks for another excellent reaction.
This is the one I've been waiting for. ❤
These MTV Unplugged concerts were amazing! Pearl Jam was an incredible live band back then. I'm sure they still are! Eddie was always an extremely passionate performer, and the whole band was super high energy live. Their performance from the early 90s at Pinkpop is definitely worth checking out!
MTV should bring back their Unplugged Series and Metal Mayhem. They can get some of the crap shows off
They still put on a hell of a show.
...when people ask me; why couldn't you move on from the 90s' music? This video is one of the reasons...
This is the performance I point people to when they ask me about Pearl Jam.
You should definitely do Jeremy next.
Ugh, I wish people would stop doing that. This is Eddie's ballad, the most powerful and deepest of any of the songs they wrote; this performance better than any other. If people are going to listen to any Pearl Jam songs, they need to do it BEFORE this one. All of the others are lesser.

My apologies Ash. Auto-correct decided to change your name to Ashley. I guess I should have spell-checked. Lol
I always find myself listening to this version of the song over the original. His vocals here are incredible. To this day, the best live performance I have ever heard.
It is pretty amazing!
Lol "If you can't appreciate this man right here, then... I don't know what you're doing with your life." Lol, classic, great reaction and video, keep up the great work 😎🦙

You have a wonderful heart. This song brings out emotion in me also. It truly is amazing.
Brings a tear every time..
Hi Ash. great reaction to the live version.
Feel it. Love it. It’s glorious. Perfection
One of the greatest songs ever performed. Eddie is unmatched!
Awesome reaction
Whether or not you do reaction vids, you should watch each song from the Unplugged set. Each performace...stellar.
Might be the best performance of the decade
You should listen to as much Pearl Jam as possible. They are an amazing band.
I can't remember being that young anymore. Cheers Eddie
Vetter sand this at a concert not long after Chris Cornell passed as a tribute and breaks down crying. Really touching video of it.
Imo this is better just because we can see all the emotions put into the performance. One of the best performance I think. ✌❤
I think the live performance is better than the studio version

This song requires a person to have a soul to listen to it I think..... you have one. enjoy...
Still one of the best live bands!!! Check out Eddie Vedder doing Porch live at Global Citizens Festival from 2018. His vocals are insane!!!
The Band called Live is also great in their MTV unplugged.
Great band and reaction 👍
Black and Alive are probably the saddest.

Probably the best live performance of this song! You should listen to Jeremy, Porch....Listen to all there songs ...Great Band.
Loved this song since about 96 (bit late to it) but thought it was so great, a live version would be a bit lame in comparison.......I was wrong!!!

There's 1 time with a nice guitar solo but that was it.

Eddie was very attractive back in the day, but seeing him get so into his art and performance is fucking magnetic.
The emotional is real. Eddie Bedder wrote this about his girlfriend who left him in 10th grade
