Audrey grew up under a the brutal NAZI occupation of her home country as a young teenager. She faced both starvation and arrest by the gestapo for her family's involvement in the resistance. Ferrer should have been proud to be married to such a woman.
also her father left her... a woman without a father figure or an abusive father is pretty unstable, so a dude must be careful.
Jealousy destroys many Hollywood marriages.
Mel Ferrer and Audrey Hepburn dined at the Japanese restaurant that I worked at in Century City. They were in the Japanese tatami room. She smiled and was dazzling. A really beautiful woman. So gracious.
Oh wow when was this if you don’t mind me asking ???
@@sabrinaacevedo2110 I'd like to know that, too. (How thrilling!)
It was around 1966-1967. A long time ago, but I'll always remember her beautiful smile.
@@angelbabysqueaky3985 What you said earlier about her being so gracious...I'm so happy to hear that because it's just how I always pictured her to be.
@@angelbabysqueaky3985 She had a beautiful soul too.
Poor Mel.. must be tough being married to an angel
it was a bloke

U got that right bro!!!!
@Invité Are You serious ? You think You're enlightening us ? Of course everyone here over 12 years old knows all about such things. You have no evidence to show that was the case here. Ferrer's homosexuality was never established beyond rumor. Neither you or I have any knowledge beyond this rumor. I don't know what your comment has to do with my post anywaay.
No Angels in LA except the motorcycle gang.
Instead of being proud of his wife he came across as a very self centered entitled man. He brought this into the marriage. I feel being a man grown up in a prestigious family and went to the best schools. Very different from Audrey Hepburn.. His nasty feelings ruined his relationships with all his wives. Audrey was a very sweet person and became deeply hurt by him, in my view.
what are you talking about ?? Audrey came from an aristocratic family. Her mother was a Baroness.
I agree. He was selfish and jealous of her success.
Dead “ On “ wicked heart !!
@@anastasia10017 Title without financial means to match.
Audrey came from a priveleged background as well, but her family's experience during WWII kept them "real."
Probably because he could never overcome her "star" status. He was, at best, a competent actor and director, but never was he a brilliant "star" in his own right. Instead of accepting his co star status in their marriage he was forever hung up because of it. An ego trip unfulfilled! ♐
In those times it was the man's job to lead the family, and the wife's duty to serve her husband. It was hard for couples in this type of relationship where the wife is more famous. I think he felt that he was only Mr. Hepburn to Audrey, and couldn't cope with that.
Yes, a homely looking man, full of himself, married to a gracious, beautiful star. He knew he didn’t measure up! Poor Audrey must have fallen for the false impression as most all of us do. Absolutely love her, always!💕
I can't imagine any real man hating to be married to Audrey Hepburn.
Amazing how stupid women can be chosing a man with that that track record.Or repeatedly getting into relationships with a violent abusive man .Yet will treat a man that is respectful with total disdain .
@@johndean4765 sadly, this is far too true.
I think actors are always aiming for the limelight, he was probably very jealous.
I guess I understand the guy’s issue of being in Audrey Hepburn’s shadow. Every photo that featured them both, my eyes were on her.
Mel Ferrer was always known as an egomaniac which is something that profession seems to create. He should have been more adult than that. He should have appreciate her more than he did.
Yeah, that is going to be hard for many men, particularly back there in the 1950s.
В Ее Тени - все остальное человечество! Одри - Ангел бывший на Земле и ушедший на Небо!❤❤❤
@@petertaylor3600 bullshit 😂 why did he attended Audrey Hepburn's funeral?. Even in Audrey's last interview, she still mentioned Ferrer as her husband.
He was selfish, self-centered and was jealous of her success. He blames her for his lack of success when in reality it was his own fault because of his attitude.
Anyone lucky enough to marry Audrey Hepburn should have worshipped the ground she walked on.
🤫🤔 So Ironic really, if it was not for the fact that he was once married to Audrey Hepburn. Then I would never have heard of this man 👨or actor..........
If I were Mel Ferrer, I would have been proud and honored to have captured the love of such an amazing, charming, beautiful and talented person. I’ll never personally understand his bitterness on it, but I suppose it couldn’t be helped that he felt so bitterly on being a little overshadowed by such an icon. Very tragic :(
For me she was the epitome of beauty and femininity in the 1960s. The other beauty of that time was Jean Shrimpton.
This is what Prince Charles suffered when married to Princess Diana. All eyes were on him while he was single. But when he married and his wife became the more glamorous of the two, Charles became jealous. All women (and men) preferred the fashionable and approachable princess. Audrey was gorgeous and a fashion icon. It's natural that eyes should drift to her rather than him.
Her mother was right, he did look like a frog.
I wonder why that mattered to Prince Charles! He continued his affair with his old flame Camilla, so the Diana "factor" shouldn't have meant anything !
Prince Charles is seriously flawed!
Hepburn, was uniquely beautiful. Her face, the short hair, her eyebrows, her rail thin figure, all combined to give us, "Audrey Hepburn." There was no one like her before. And she had a depth of experience in her eyes, nearly staving to death during WWII. Ferrer, was a depressive, with a fragile ego. Too few photos of the guy even smiling. "Dude, you’re sleeping with Audrey Hepburn, cheer up!"
They look genuinely happy in their photos together.I’m sorry they couldn’t last the distance.
Beware: sometimes looks can be deceiving, especially with some actors! ♐
I agree !
@@AladdinSaneNYC O.K. but I still like to think of them having some happy times together and they produced a very fine son.
I would give anything to see Mel Ferrer and Audrey Hepburn in Green Mansions. It's long been one of my favorite novels.
Good movie. Definitely capitalizes on the enchanting beauty that was Audrey Hepburn. But the other leading actor wasn't Mel Ferrer, but was Anthony Perkins, the actor from the Psycho movie. Also playing the leader of the natives was Japanese actor Sessue Hayakawa. He was very popular in the silent film era, that film historians say his popularity was greater then Rudolph Valentino. I ordered the movie from Ebay. Pleased to see this movie in technicolor.
@@chadnewfield8866 Mr. Hayakawa was a very beautiful man, too. Also nominated for a Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his fine work in “The Bridge on the River Kwai.” He was so talented! He should be better known today!
Sessue Hayakawa was also in the movies Three Came Home with Claudette Colbert, and he had a small role as a police detective in The House of Bamboo with Robert Ryan. Both of those movies came out in the 1950's.
@@chadnewfield8866 Beautiful, gifted man!
Compared to Audrey, he could never come close to her class and grace! She would outshine him in a blink. Most men, 'say' they want an attractive wife, but those with egos want also to be 'top dog'! And Mel isn't classy enough to outshine Audrey. She would have left him in the dust! Often they put down their more attractive, popular, charismatic partner to try to elevate themselves. This doesn't work. Few have the class to say, as Jack Kennedy did, 'I'm just the man who brought Jackie Kennedy to Paris', when everyone fawned over her. JFK didn't feel slighted at all. Few men have that level of grace and charm! Mel (Mr Ego) certainly didn't! Mel was exceptionally unattractive. I could not believe Audrey could be with such a pedestrian man!
Like many husbands who are entertainers, but married to a partner whose fame eclipses theirs, those husbands usually resent their partner’s success, and such marriages generally are doomed. See: Elizabeth Taylor/Richard Burton; Hillary Swank/Chad Lowe & Reese Witherspoon/Ryan Philippe, just for starters. It’s a shame we still expect men to be the bigger star or money maker. It’s unfair to both partners.
Taylor was not a bigger star than Burton. He had a stellar career, staring in theater before he became a movie star. He could do both but she couldn’t. What broke them up was the drinking and the excess. They ruined their looks with alcohol, which can hurt your career, especially if you’re a female.
@@sopranosd well she always earned more money than he did - which he resented. Won 2 Oscars, while he (unfairly) won none. EVERYONE on the planet knew who Taylor was, but only half as many knew who Burton was. Granted, he was a better actor than she was, but unfortunately, that doesn’t always equate to more fame. He was jealous of the fact she made more money - he infamously said, “I feel every husband should out earn his wife” which he didn’t - at least not with Liz. He was also envious of her greater fame and Oscar success. Let’s face it - even today her star endures while his has sadly faded. He might have been a greater star had he not prematurely killed himself with alcohol. She abused it too, but held on until 2011, while he died in 1984.
William Holden's wife Brenda Marshall was jealous of him after gaining fame from Sunset Boulevard.
@@sopranosd True!!!
As a young man who loved Audrey, I hated Mel Ferrer. I'd never heard of him, and thought him ugly and boring.
That was a really good, introductory video to someone I knew nothing about.
It was am-packed with information.
Many, many thanks, sir.
Why do all the headlines for each video have question marks at the end? They are statements, not questions!
That Playhouse in La Jolla, California is pronounced, "La HOY-AH." It's Spanish! Knowing proper pronunciation offers credibility, making the audience believe that the Narrator believes what he or she is reading, and knows what he, or she is talking about.
Sometimes I think this a bot with an English accent.
You beat me to it! I was going to correct him also. It's disturbing when people who are supposed to be in the know show their ignorance of proper pronunciation. Other than that I enjoy hearing his voice.
With all the talented men in the world, it's hard to understand why Audrey Hepburn had to settle for Ferrer, as Efrem Zimbalist Jr commented in his autobiography. It would be interesting to see this chronicler review Ferrer's clever film "The Girl from the Red Cabaret."
Probably vain reasons, he was really tall and the guy she was engaged to before him looked very similar. She also spoke very fondly of Gary Cooper who had a similar looking frame.
Interesting and detailed story of Mel Ferrer’s life. Too bad that some images don’t connect with the audio. Still, we are interested in Mel Ferrer’s life and career. And his love story with Audrey Hepburn, of course ✨
My second bite at this video. Actually, I doubt whether anyone really knows why the Ferrer-Hepburn marriage failed. Was anyone posting here their marriage guidance counsellor? It seems that in its early days things went well, with Mel being of help to Audrey in the Hollywood jungle. Later, it may be that her stunning success, in itself, detracted from his career. And judging from most of the gossip about them, it seems that her attractiveness would dispose many people (like me) to feel an instant prejudice against any man she fancied.
Mel Ferrer was a most elegant man and was a unique person. Audrey Hepburn was lovely. I feel sorry that they had the problems you mentioned.
I loved seeing Mel on the screen especially in period costume pictures. I always thought he was so good looking and had a big crush on him when I was a kid ♥️🥰👍
I saw him once in 1987 jogging near Beverly hills, he seemed sad I remember wondering if he was thinking about his former wife.
I just finished reading her autobiography; Author Barry Paris and there was not one single person in Hollywood who hated or disliked her, except for a mere couple of reporters who said some low-key unsavoury things about her, but that's journalists and reporters for you, just aiming to get attention for their work. In real life, with her humanitarian work, film, friends and family she was deeply loved. Her mother was exceedingly proud of her but had no idea how to express and convey that to her to her face, her father abandoned her and that affected her entire life whereby the trauma of him leaving her was forever etched in her heart, soul, and spirit. When she found him decades later she went on to support him financially until his death. She held no grudges or bitterness and much like her mother he also failed to convey how sorry he was for abandoning her and that he was in fact very proud of her; He followed her career unbeknownst to her, regretted abandoning her and indeed loved her. Her husband Ferrer was a stick in the mud, very controlling over her, vehemently jealous and insecure of her. I didn't like him at all. He was not a good man. Rather pathetic, in my opinion, and certainly not worthy of the most beautiful woman to ever walk on this planet. Her inner beauty was and still remains the most precious and divine. He was a crappy director as well as an actor and there's nothing nice about him. Thank God Sean their son inherited his mother's beautiful heart and continues to promote her legacy with his half-brother to her second marriage, an Italian psychiatrist who was a disgusting unfaithful cheater. Audrey did all she could to save both marriages but those two men were horrendous for her. She finally found the man of her dreams, Mr Robert Wolders and he was an angel. He loved her above and beyond and that gave me great joy, knowing that she was finally able to be with someone who deeply loved her; unconditionally and completely. They never married but we were together until she took her last breath. Two angels and saints that found their way to each other.
Obviously he was an insecure individual and jealous of the attention given to his wife. All can say is thank God he did not physically abuse her. Unfortunately, far too often that is how it ends up.
A miscast life . Given his rather patrician and professional family background he might have been best suited to academia . William Holden was the love of Audrey's life but he did not want children and she did .
Mel’s problem could have been that he wasn’t handsome or charismatic. If he hated being her husband because it hurt his career, then it wasn’t true love, which is unselfish.
I think he was not traditionally handsome but talented.
@@Sunshine_day And rather charismatic, to be fair.
I think he was handsome, to each his own.
Sometimes angels become humans to help humans become angels 💜🌟👼
You either need a "did" in that title or take out the question mark.
One of the reason why they divorced, because Audrey's mother and some her friend dislike Mel Ferrer. He was married fourth times before. Audrey's mother called him as frog face.
I believe they're still keep in touch though they was divorced.
You wouldn’t know, but “La Jolla” is pronounced “La Hoya”.
I was wondering about that...
J is usually silence in a lot of the words in California because we’re close to Mexico. I live in La Jolla. But people that are not well traveled don’t know how to say it I guess
Yes.
Thanks for mentioning this nicely. Not everyone knows the differences between how various letters are sounded out in various languages.
I have always thought that Mel Ferrer was a far better actor than he got credit for and he had a charisma that that just bounced off the screen. In the tv version of Mayerling he was brilliant as Crown Prince Rudolph and his performance was head and shoulders above that of Omar Sheriff in the later feature film. You really got that Rudolf was a basically good man with a slim hold on sanity. He was a beautiful dancer too and it’s such a pity that he only made one musical. A great talent sadly under used and underrated.
Rudolph had the genetic gift of mental instability. Was present in both his parents' lineages
I agree, I think the media was more likely the real cause of their breaking up not his acting ability. ♥️💕❤️

Strongly disagree, mediocre actor, an awful director and an ugly human being especially on the inside. Outside not much better.
La Jolla is pronounced La Hoy Ya. Great documentary, really enjoyed it.
Always thought she could have done a lot better than him . not that there's anything wrong with him but I guess we fantasize about who our superstars should marry
We sure do ! I always thought Brigitte Bardot should have been with Alain Delon :
two of France's most gorgeous people !!
OFGS! It's not La-Joe-ya playhouse ....it's La-hoy-a playhouse!
Skip this vid. The narrator never gets around to telling us why he hated being married to Audrey Hepburn.
Fragile ego but it must not be easy to be the husband of the bigger star. For another example, bobby Brown was jealous of whitney houston....why not a video about her Age ???
President Kennedy just enjoyed having a famous wife. He said,
I am the man who accompanied Jacqueline Kennedy to Paris, and I have enjoyed it.
John F. Kennedy
Be advised that the letter J has a h sound in Spanish. So it would sound La Hoya though spelled La Jolla.
Hope this is helpful. La Jolla is pronounced LA Hoy-yah emphasis on Hoy.
Ego insecurity is pathetic, be pleased with your life partners success otherwise you love yourself more than your wife.
I just subscribed, today. The stories are truly interesting. I just have one recommendation. You can use the duration text box if you created your slideshow on PowerPoint to slow down the speed of your slideshow. You would not have to repeat photos that way and allow a closer look.
I was suprised to know the Mel wasn't even related to Jose'you learn something new every day
I had heard of Mel Ferrer and had forgotten he was married to Hepburn.
FYI...he California town ou discuss is pronounced, "La Hoya", not La Jolla, as it is indeed spelled
You're missing a few letters.
He was a good actor, moderately good looking but never had a personality (as far as the screen required) No John Wayne, no Clint even as a bad guy was not convincing, in short: no star material there, no woman would say; hey, this man is SEXY just an anonimous meanigless face, good for him he was family rich.
Very good story. You did a fine job.
Thank you Raynona! 🙂
Pronunciation of La Jolla : lah hoy yah
Very interesting, but some funny pronunciations: Louis Auchincloss (not French at all), La Jolla (HAW-yah), SEE-rahno, ahn-DEEN, Lunt not Loont.
When she had men like William Holden, Gary Cooper 'dating' her, she needed to take a rest under the security of marriage for just a while. Like most actresses, insecurity creeps in and out of their lives. Added to their frustration is that many leading men were faithfully married. As a princess in "Roman Holiday," overnight she won an audience.
She & Holden were deeply in love, but Hepburn wanted children more than anything & when she found out that Holden had previously had a vasectomy she ended the relationship.
I always thought Mel Ferrer was a good physical actor with a sense of "coolness" about him. In addition to "Scaramouche," I loved him in "Rancho Notorious," Fritz Lang's Western saga of "hate, murder...and revenge!".
La Jolla is Spanish and is pronounced La Hoya. Js are Hs and double Ls are Ys.
I have never thought him good-looking. He seemed to have little personality and was lacking in charm.
What the hell was she thinking to marry this guy? He already had kids he left behind with several wives...he became jealous of her success...and had no sign of being a long term marriage. Hollywood is just a revolving door of marriage and beak up. Sad really especially for the kids. She had so many choices yet went with the frog.
Please take a moment to look up the town of La Jolla and HOW to pronounce it. It's at least twice now you've slaughtered it. Don't you Brits study Spanish....ever? You live right next to Spain! And La Jolla is quite a well known place in California...and very beautiful....Just North of San Diego on the coast. LAAH-HOY-YA ....not JOL- LA
This is how I always felt. She had bad picks with husbands. She could have done much better. It looks like she was insecure about herself.

That's what my mother always said and she thought he was butt ugly, Audrey to sweet and cute to be with him!
hmmmm ... 'green mansions' was a film name I remember liking but can't remember plot or why now. Perhaps I just liked anything that Audrey appeared in.
I read the book when I was very young. I vaguely remember it being a story about an explorer (I think) who meets a girl in the jungle (Amazon?) and falls in love with her - but she is mysterious, as if she were part human and part spiritual creature. I do remember loving the story !
This is very interesting, but why can't you have the narration have some semblance of relevance to what we're seeing on the screen? It's very discombobulating to hear you talking about one person while the picture of another!
"La Jolla" is pronounced "La Hoya."
One thing I am curious about you said after your Ferrar went into a nursing home he died shortly after but you never said what he actually died from. People don't die from failing health that's sort of a generic term for lay people. What was his real cause of death?
Mel Ferrer died of heart failure at the age of 90 as the narrator says at the end of the video.
Thank you
I have been told that I look like Mel Ferrer.

Forget LaJolla. That isn't how I remember Carpinteria being pronounced, unless its a town of which I'm not aware. We've got to get rid of these difficult to pronounce foreign place names - we'll start with changing New York back to New Amsterdam. And Pittsburgh back to Fort Duquesne. Uh, oh wait.
