    I got the UMC404 three months ago. I had a tight budget and wanted 4ins and outs, so I took the leap. I'm very happy with it. It sounds great to me. The biggest boon for me was the low latency. With Input Echo (Sonar X3 Pro) on a guitar track whilst recording, I could not detect the two separate sounds. This means that the latency must be extremely low. Also, using a MIDI drumkit, via the UMD's 5 pin MIDI input, the drum hits are exactly the same time. I tested this at low volume to see if I could detect a delay between the sound of the stick hitting the snare, and the processed MIDI signal (Addictive Drums 2) coming through the speakers. There was no delay. I've had four audio dropouts in three months. These were all on demanding projects and the dropouts only lasted a second and did not crash the DAW.

    Though this little gem has no optical out but MIDAS rules and 48v phantom & inserts in this category are also a very good deal!

    Thanks for the video! I have this unit and prior to buying it I was discouraged by sales people because they usually have unfavourable things to say about Behringer and would prefer to sell you more expensive brands like Presonus or Focusrite. However, one valid point which the more knowledgeable sales people made was that the Preamps are only "Midas designed" and not necessarily the same preamps that would go into midas consoles. Personally I don't think this matters. Thanks again.

    I've only recorded one channel at a time since I bought the UMC404 but I still find the four inputs useful. Check this out... Condensor mic always attached in input 1 of the UMC404 for vocals and recording acoustic instruments. SM57 mic always on my guitar amp speaker and plugged into input 2. Another SM57 mic on my bass amp speaker and plugged into input 3. Then I have a templete in my DAW all routed for each mic/instrument. The point of all this, I have just about no set up time to record any of those instruments, just turn the gain dial up for the appropriate channel and push record. Saves a lot of time.

    what i wanna know is after i turn on the 48v phantom power, can i use other 3 ports to use guitar along with a condensener microphone?
    will there be any consiquences or drawbacks like clipping or something like that?
    thanks in advance..😊

    • @TheCoachMusicOfficial
      @TheCoachMusicOfficial  6 лет назад +2

      That's a great question. The phantom does not affect anything plugged in by 1/4 inch cable like a guitar. I have used some cheaper devices in the past which were ground and would cause some electrical him to be recorded but that's not the case with this interface

    I love this interface, but you do have a point about the phantom power. So I use an Art Tube Studio v2 mic preamp with a groove tube inside for my microphones, so that way you don't even need to use the phantom power on the interface. It sounds better as well.

    • @TheCoachMusicOfficial

    Great vid, I have a technical question about the power supply for the device. I bought mine 2nd hand and it came without a power supply. I know that it requires 5V 1000ma power supply. I've found loads of those on eBay but I cannot find anywhere specifications for the Tip that the power supply would need to fit into the Behringer. (Usually measure in MM). So I don't know if it requires 3.5mm length, etc. I also don't know the diameter of the required PIN tip either. They come in varying diameter: eg 2.5mm, 1.7 etc
    The instruction manual of the Behringer404 gives no specifics.
    I've emailed Behringer a few weeks ago but I'm still in the customer queue apparently.
    I noticed in your review, yours came with the power supply.
    -would u be able to tell me any specifics about the power supply it uses so I can make the right choice?
    There is also some mention of the power supply being 'negative pin'.
    I don't know exactly what thT means. Does that mean the Behringer has an internal pin in its Jack? Or does it mean that the power supply needs to have a 'negative pin' in it?
    Thank you again for the useful review and for reading !

  • @RipOffImrul

    Fantastic video. I want to get this for 4 mic drum recording. However, it seems that it only has 1 common phantom power switch. That means i won't be able to use condensers and dynamics together? I was thinking samson co2 for overheads, sm57 for snare and bluebird for kick. The sm57 is dynamic and phantom power will cause issues as far as i know. What's your opinion?

    • @TheCoachMusicOfficial
      @TheCoachMusicOfficial  6 лет назад

      Imrul RipOff as long as your mic cables are all wired up properly (balanced with the correct pin connections) and well-made, and you're using decent XLR cables everywhere - and all of your microphones are modern - there is no problem at all using universal phantom power while having both condensor and phantom mics simultaneously connected.

      I got another product today, a "Behringer MicroHD HD400" described as an Ultra-Compact 2-channel Hum Destroyer. I didn't have a 60 cycle hum, but I had a rapid background pulsing sound around maybe 500hz when my laptop was plugged in with the UMC404 attached to my amplifier which went out to my reference speakers. If I unplugged the computer and ran from battery power the sound went away. Now with the Hum Destroyer between the UMC404 and my power amp the noise has gone away. I wasn't sure it would work as I didn't have a 60 cycle hum, but it is working. The sound of silence... :)

    My friend, do you even know what the mono/stereo button does? It "activates mono monitoring of audio signals connected to INPUTS 1 - 4 when engaged" (from the manual). This doesn´t allow for cheking the mix in mono.. It's made for a different purpose, e.g. when directly monitoring an instrument/microphone with headphones and you want to mono monitor.
    I have the very same button on my interface and was confused as well. The fact that you point it out that you´re using the button every day to CHECK YOUR MIXES doesn´t speak in favor of your mixes or your listening skills.. I hope I´m mistaken, please correct me. I would love that the button would do what you think it does, and on some other interfaces there´s a button for this, but this one is a different story.

    • @SamuelWebster
      @SamuelWebster 6 лет назад

      He actually said that he uses it every day when he's mixing, and so he's happy that it has that feature built in... Obviously a mistake on what the button does, but it was before trying it out. It's easy to make that mistake. I'm sure he figured it out later. Even if not everyone can tell the difference between a mono and a stereo mix straight away, everyone would notice the button not doing anything. Give him the benefit of the doubt.

    • @joachimg.5203
      @joachimg.5203 6 лет назад

    can you do multitrack recordings with it? Say, record a guitar, a bass and a vocal at the same time, each in a diferent track on the DAW. I use Audition!

    • @TheCoachMusicOfficial
      @TheCoachMusicOfficial  7 лет назад +3

      the answer to your question is HECK YEA!!! Because it has 4 inputs you can do that with up to 4 different instruments at the same time.

      Felipe Locca if your guitar is plugged into the first combo input on the interface then set your track in Adobe Audition to input one. repeat the process for inputs two and three and four... Then make a hit !👍👍

    • @TheCoachMusicOfficial

      Praveen PL correct. All you have to do is assign the 4 inputs in your DAW to the proper 4 inputs on the interface. So if you wanted to record 1 guitar, 1 bass, 1 vocal and 1 mono piano all at the same time ....you could.

      Unless you're planning on using a tablet or mobile device as the center for your recording, I would choose the UMC404. You get waaay more features and its much cheaper. Thats my opinion. I hope it helps. Make sure to DYOA. God Bless and make some hits.

      DYOA = DO Your Own Analysis . I haven't had the pleasure of using the iRig so I'm not able to compare Sound quality I can only compare them on specs. The UMC404 has more inputs , more outputs and Midas preamps. Thats my pick

    With this, can you:
    1. Send individual outs to outputs 1-4 and not have them also output to the main out L/R?
    I would want to use it live and send output from a few different VST instruments from my DAW to allow for more flexibility for the sound tech.
    2. Use it without the power brick? Is USB power enough?

    • @TheCoachMusicOfficial
      @TheCoachMusicOfficial  6 лет назад

      Espialist To answer your questions 1. No. I have not been able to send specific channels to specific outputs. It seems to just be another master. 2. I lost my power brick 2 days after opening the box. And have been using it via USB power. Hope this helps

      I’m using one with an iPad Pro 9.7, with a camera connection kit adapter. The iPad USB connection can’t power it directly (limited to 100mA), so I had to connect a powered USB hub in between. It worked that way.
      One thing, though - my recording levels were a bit low, so I had to normalise the tracks after recording (in Auria Pro). I saw something somewhere which suggested that the problem might be fixed by connecting and powering up the components in a specific order. I need to experiment a bit further.

      The 2i2 is lacking. The 2i4 would be the one to think about. The comparable interface to the 2i4 would be the umc204 which is the same thing at a much lower price.
      The umc404 is better than both while still half the price of the 2i4.
