  • In this video we discuss the new M4 iPad Pros that just came out on May 7th. We also discuss why all of us should not be too excited about the new iPads and especially the M4 version with all the power it now has for Ai tasks. We touch on all the iPad's new features including the M4 iPad Pro, M2 iPad Air, and even the base iPad. We discuss the direction iPads are moving toward overall with new Ai features coming. Watch this video to find out why I think the M4 iPad will actually be bad for the people it was made for.

    Bravo! I’ve watched a slew of videos describing Apple’s new iPads and you are the first reviewer I’ve seen who is cautioning against the rush to enable iPads and every other computer with AI capabilities! You’re right when you say that 95% of users don’t need AI taking over their devices and Apple is wrong to push AI on them. I just talked a friend out of buying a new iPad Pro because he can hardly use the iPAD 9 he currently owns! He’s worried about not being “future proof” when he has no idea of what’s really coming! I know many tech geeks will disagree with me about AI, but what I’m trying to say is that Apple needs to listen to what users WANT instead of confusing them with different options that don’t necessarily meet what they NEED!

      Thanks for watching the channel and thanks for the post. I just fear that we all want these devices but if the Ai tech is so good that we are no longer needed we won't have a need for them. It's a funny thing to think about. In any case everything moves forward so we will need to see how things play out.

    As I heard it, the M3 wasn't quite ready in time for the "Scary Fast" event, so we got a somewhat crippled one.
    That's why it wasn't "head and shoulders" better that the M2 as we had been promised.
    This M4 is the M3 we shoulda gotten.
    The thin iPad Pro means it's much lighter than the original iPad Pro was which I always thought was the main thing wrong with it. The size was great but it was just too heavy. Now it's not anymore.
    I've been waiting for an M5 or M6 before I upgrade from my M1, but this M4 has turned my head.

    • @TamasKiss-yk4st
      @TamasKiss-yk4st 23 дня назад

      The M3 was more than ready at the release, the software updates issue was because of that.. there was a significant amount of M3 laptop with about 2-3months old OS, so the update what worked on the newer OS, failed to work on the olders (so on those which was in a warehouse for months before their release..)
      The M3 used only a custom made 3nm technology (N3B), and it's a more expensive like the current standard techonlogy in M4 (N3E), so they didn't even planed to make a full refresh with that from the begining (like M3 had only 18 TOPS AI capability, but even the iPhone 15 had 35 TOPS, so they never planed to use the M3 in any device with Siri, because the Siri response speed difference is significant with the halved AI capability in M3)

    I pre ordered the new m4 ipad pro with 1tb. I been using the m1 iPad Pro with 1tb for the past 2 years between 6 to 12 hours a day for photo editing raw files from my sony a7riv and a7rv. And its starting to slow down and overheat. I dont know if its the charging port or the battery is spent. But its time for a new one. I prefer the ipad pro over my mac studio for photo editing because it’s so simple to use the touchscreen compared to a mouse or trackpad. Do i care if the new m4 iPad Pro is thinner NOPE it’s getting a case put on it on day one. All this AI does nothing for me. Video takeaway: Apple is Skynet? On a serious note, what few tech reviewers are discussing is that there appear to be practical reasons for the M4. Apparently, the 3 nm process for the M3 chip is inefficient and costly. M4 uses a better process with a more efficient yield. Also, the chip has display controllers necessary for the new tandem OLED display. So AI is just a fraction of the reason for the new chip. Lastly, it’s a little ridiculous to expect a lot of discussion about AI and software at a hardware event. WW, where Apple ALWAYS discusses new software for its devices, is a month away. Releasing the M4 now allows Apple to provide a device for the public, not some dev kit, to test new software and potential AI features. Fingers crossed we get some major iPad OS updates though.

    • @craigneidel
      @craigneidel  22 дня назад

      Yes, I know about the M3 and how they had to make this new chip as the M3 was really version A etc. But I just wanted to make the video to get the discussion going around how fast things will be changing and if Ai get's so good then what happens to all the people that trained it. Nothing about Skynet but a real question as many people in areas like Customer support and tech support are already losing jobs etc. Anyhow just a fun video to get some discussion going.

    Craig, you are not crazy for thinking this way. Just look at Apple's own video about the iPad. These tech companies want to own the future, and thereby, us. We must not let that happen. This is a Paul Revere moment. Time to re-watch "2001," "The Matrix," "1984" or "Forbidden Planet." Take your pick of the sc-fi films. Science fiction writers saw this coming a long time ago. You don't need to be paranoid to worry about this, you need to be sane! Stunningly ironic that Apple, famous for its "1984" commercial, is now threatening, along with the rest of the tech industry, to actually become Big Brother, while posing as our liberator. Literally crushing everything that gets in its way. Watch that video before it gets taken down! It shows what amounts to murder. What minds could have thought of it? Tim Cook, disown it!

If you move this to a large scale with so many more things then Ai looks pretty scary for sure. Thanks again.

    @ThePropsmithChannel 24 дня назад +2

    The entire point of this video seems predicated on Apple finally using the term “AI” - but the thing is, nothing they talked about is the kind of generative AI that you’re concerned about. It’s all the exact kind of stuff they’ve spoken about for years. The only difference is that they’ve previously shied away from the term, instead using the more-accurate term “Machine Learning.” So, all the AI talk you heard here was just Machine Learning, which Apple has been doing since at least 2011.
    I’d also like to correct some points on your fears for stock photographers and the like… Most stock image companies do not allow AI-generated images. And even for the ones that do (like Shutterstock), a lot of fields that utilize stock image sites won’t or can’t use such images. For example: I’m a graphic designer, making on-screen graphics for TV shows and movies. Every graphic I make is run by a legal clearance department to approve or deny. And they will never approve AI generated content because it can’t be copyrighted (meaning the studio can’t claim ownership of it) and they can’t verify where they underlying training data comes from, meaning that they open themselves up to a lawsuit from an artist who’s work was used to train the AI to create a derivative image. So that’s a 100% no-go. In short, my job is safe.
    And I’m sure similar situations apply to your other examples, as well.
    We’ll have to wait for iOS18 to see what Apple’s full goals are with their implementation of AI, but I don’t see a reality where they are this careful getting into the space while seeing all the pitfalls and criticisms and push for generative images and music… especially since this latest announcement shows that they know exactly who their key demo is (and always has been). I expect that they’ll use it to make Siri more intelligent and capable (hopefully), learning users’ habits and device usage and applying it in a more efficient and useful way, and possibly things like summarizing emails.

      Thanks for your long post and I appreciate you watching. I hear you on the Stock companies but the point I'm making is that they will all go out of business. The Ai companies will sell a subscription and people will get their photos from there at a very low cost. So it's not out of the question there could be a large issue there. Also, iOS 18 is just the start and I think all the Ai companies know they need to tread lightly at the start and release changes at a pace that most people won't pick up on. It's to there advantage to slow roll it but in a few years we will all be wondering what happened I think.

    The issue with this video is that it should’ve been titled “Why nobody should be excited about AI”. M4 itself is a great chip and according to recent geekbench metrics, the fastest consumer chip in existence. That’s a tremendous feat of engineering. So your arguments against the chip should’ve basically been how it has surplus power that most people don’t need or how IpadOS is incapable of using that power. Instead your basic argument throughout the video is how AI will eliminate creative jobs and thus this particular company’s powerful chip is bad. Today you don’t even need a powerful chip to use AI to its full potential as all compute is done remotely. All you need is a browser and if you still wanna blame a chip maker, blame Nvidia.

    • @craigneidel
      @craigneidel  23 дня назад

      The idea is my thought that apple released the M4 on iPad and not m3 to get ready for new iOS release with all the ai features coming. That is a true statement based on my research. So yes the chip is good but my statement on what it's meant to do is accurate. I tend to be on apples side in my 650 videos but here big tech is going to be an issue with jobs in my opinion and ai will be the focus of this release.

    I'm not as excited about the M4 as much as I am for the OLED display. The elephant in the room is that these things are still primarily going to be used for media creation and consumption. The average person will be using this to surf the internet, watch 4K+HDR content, and read books. $2,000 is a lot for that. But if people have the cash to throw down for it, more power to 'em. While I'll likely do a bit of gaming on it as well, my primary gaming machine is powered by a 4090 and my alternative is usually a Nintendo Switch or my Steam Deck.

    I think that you ask some valid questions about AI. But, as I look at the progression of computers over the years, concerns about job loss have been largely wrong. For the most part, it has allowed us to do our jobs better. And it has expanded what is expected (better quality work product).
    I look back to when the Mac came around with desktop publishing. People would mix many fonts and weird colors together. Of course then templates were developed to get us along a better design. AI will add smarts to these templates. But it will still be the creative and trained individual that will make best use of the tools.
    I have more concerns about other areas of AI that for the most part will live on these big server farms that will teach me how to think with some sort of bias.

    • @craigneidel
      @craigneidel  23 дня назад

      My concern is that Ai is going to move at a speed we have not seen before and only a few large corporations are going to control most of it. I mean even if just Siri gets better do to Ai (obviously it won't stop there), it will be the programmers of the Ai who are controlling the outcomes to some extend. Yes, Ai is supposed to learn and adjust, but if you don't think these companies will have placed their own spin on things then we haven't been watching them before. This is just a video to get the conversation started what could happen. I think many jobs are going away and how society and the government deals with that is going to be interesting for sure. I do think it's different this time because of how quickly jobs like graphic arts, customer service, tech support, auditors, actuaries, accounting, programmers, etc. (fill in many more here) will be replaced by something cheaper and smarter. It's going to shake things up but I'm not yet 100% sure how.

      @@craigneidel I am not completely disagreeing with you. If I didn’t appreciate the more cynical view that you present many times I wouldn’t watch your channel. I am less worried than you. But, do have concerns.
      I addressed the creative angle in my first reply. I have made some money in the creative arts as a side hustle. My main money maker has been making customer care software. I’m retired now, but we looked at doing large data models to improve customer care. Years ago, it was just to expensive.
      But, I think in many areas, the change will be a bit slower than most expect. But, it will be quick. There will be failures where the AI just doesn’t give good answers and this will slow down the adoption. I know the other day I clicked on a couple of the AI buttons that Facebook is giving me. The answers were disappointing. Not really answers at all. Duhhh, this what people are so excited about?

    I know you are absolutely right about what you are seeing for the future. 🙏 for the honesty. I, like you, just enjoy and love the beauty of the Apple products. Right now, I have the mini, and the the IPad Air from 2022 (I use this for streaming mostly.). I am going to be upgrading to the bigger 13 inch because I use it almost exclusively for streaming. But I could care less about the generation of the chip or OLED. Also, for me, OLED is just toooo bright. Also, I even prefer the colors on the regular displays. Because for my eyes, the fact that they are a bit lighter, makes them, “crisper” in some ways.
    So yea, everything depends on your true needs. But also, it’s very good to keep in mind what Apple is doing so that we don’t get sucked into the Apple universe of greed, getting things that you don’t really need, but just want to “keep up with the Joneses”.

    I’m lost, what does your video have to do with the M4? It’s more focused on AI generalization. New IPads, MacBook, phones, of course they are going to have the next gen chips. This one needed the M4 to drive the OLED stack dual display at the same time. But again, your argument has nothing to do with the M4 as I am almost certain any AI apple comes out with or might announce next month will probably still run on the M1 and forward.

      @@craigneidel I’m with you on the conversation part. AI is a mixed bag. Can it, is it, or will it be replacing skills that some humans have and take jobs? It depends on how far we let it go I guess. It was just the video title using the M4 iPad for clicks as the conversation starter. Will apple release features that they claim the M4 only can do, probably if history repeats itself. They said these technologies would empower the individual, but they have actually empowered the giant corporations. What's more, now we know that these companies are just as self-centered as the old capitalists. They broke laws, lied to us, stole our privacy, and effectively told us to get used to it, there is only one possible future, the one they just happen to be making. Baloney. And they think of themselves as "progressive!" Tell that to the bottom 80 percent of the people who are worse off than before. Tell that to the teen girls who are addicted to their iPhones. To all of us, living in this broken society, where we are at war with each other, and nothing is affordable. But that's OK, because Apple is solving a pressing problem: our iPads were just too darned thick. We should buy the new one because it exists, add the old one to the garbage pile...you can't repair it, Apple made sure of that. We have to "agree" to Apple's way, because that's just how freedom works!

    We’ve seen this movie before (like a ton of times, and more to come). We can protest change, but change comes anyway. Even if Apple balked at our protestations,some other tech giant or even a startup (later bought by a tech giant) will forge ahead. The biggest reason is money (it’s always money). Every change bringing positives for some, will bring negatives for others. Whining won’t really make a difference. Unfortunately, the only path forward is to adapt and/or change. Try and understand the impact of what’s coming and plan a course change for ourselves to attemp to survive and maybe thrive. When the printing press came out, what happened to the scribes trying to make a living cranking out one book or scroll every 2 years? Take a guess. You all see what’s coming with AI. You can’t whine that you didn’t see it coming. Now is the time to start your own journey making the changes you need to take to survive and maybe come out better than those around you. Good luck!

    • @craigneidel

    My other piece of feedback is just that I'm not sure your argument is well connected to your conclusion (and the title of this video). Your complaint I think is not with Apple (at least not today) it's with companies like Open AI, Google (with Gemini), Meta, Midjourney, Stable Diffusion, Adobe, etc. The iPad isn't going to be responsible for the disappearance of jobs and neither will the Mac lineup. Some of the machines might fall into the profesional space but you couldn't possibly affect industries at scale with these devices. They are too general purpose for that. Which is why only a small portion of the silicon is dedicated to these tasks. Your hardware gripes are with NVIDIA and AMD who are building the GPUs and Server chips that are all purpose built for these tasks and get linked up in the thousands to run and train these models. I realize you doing a video titled, "NVIDIA Blackwell - Why Nobody Should be Excited About The B200" isn't as sexy but if the argument in this video is the one you want to make then a video about NVIDIA's hardware is the video you should have made.

    • @craigneidel
      @craigneidel  23 дня назад

      I have done so many videos on Apple and their "good products" so no worries. Most of my channel is about that. This is not a grip with NVIDIA or AMD since all companies will be guilty to race towards the use of Ai for everything. Apple already stated it's going to be a massive part of their iOS update coming next month and therefore all tech companies will be guilty eventually. That is the tie in and the reason in my opinion why they went with the M4 and not M3. We all know the M3 is way more then enough power for an iPad. The video is just cover my thoughts on it and not so much make this perfectly packaged video like a TV production. It's RUclips and my videos are based on my true feelings so I don't tend to scrip everything I am going to say. Therefore just pick what you like and if you don't like the videos that is totally fine. That's what makes the world go around.

This is I think again an argument against your conclusion. The OS will have AI features and likely signficant improvements to your engagement with Siri but none of the things Apple is enabling is going to take peoples jobs.
      Your points in your comments and video seem like a version of "fruit of the poisonous tree doctrine" where basically anything connected to "AI" is simply bad, no matter what it is or how small. There's simply no nuance. I don't know how you'll be able to stave off the doom and gloom around Apple products if this is how you feel about the first one getting more of a focus on AI/ML functions (technically it's been here since the M1).

They’re currently using creators using the product learning how they stroke the pen, learning how they see things learning what’s considered beautiful versus not desirable. They need the user to teach the machine. It was interesting seeing Dorothea Lange's famous photo Migrant Mother, Nipomo, California, 1936 reconstructed by AI. Thankfully AI has no soul, and the original work still outshines it due to the grit and experience of the photographer capturing that image in a hostile environment etc. As impressive as AI maybe its just glossy crap that lacks a true artistic eye. Soon there will be the M5 then M6 etc but good work comes from passion and talent as technology is just a tool. Craig: here is how it plays out. First the tech helps people who are already working in the field. Then, it makes it possible to get "good enough" results with little investment of time, by buying something. An "automatic camera", say. Markets get flooded, wages decline, people give up. Here in a neighboring state, there used to be 30 photographers covering it for the leading newspaper, now, about 5 remain. They closed the newsroom. These were people I knew. I mention this because you brought up the example of Dorothea Lange. She actually had to go out into the world and meet people, and engage with them physically, full bandwidth. Meet their eyes, hear the sound of their voices, feel their pains. That's how she got that photograph. A friend, a female photojournalist, covered the US exit from Afghanistan, and stayed there afterwards, covering the story on the ground, at great risk. These tech execs who talk about "courage" do not know what that word means. Not making any case for film photography, if you look closely at that famous Lange picture, you will see it is actually out of focus! Cameras then were primitive, no one would ever go back to them. Still, some changes are momentous, like the atomic bomb, and probably AI. They said "move fast and break things." Break things, they did. When they realize what they broke, it may be too late to fix them. How things end...BTW, been using Macs since the Plus, not a hater. And Photoshop since Version 2.5. An early adopter, not wanting to hold onto a dead past at all. Just trying to make sure we actually have a future we can live in. Technology, like life, is a set of choices. You make it, you are responsible for it. There are consequences.

    I personally view AI is like RUclips. Everyone thought it'll take over jobs from big media companies, but it allowed common folks to create careers out of RUclips. AI will create more jobs and allow more common folks to create works of art, videos, and programs. AI will level the playing field for those who doesn't have the time, skill, or money to create. The only thing separating what we could create is our imagination and nothing else. AI will increase productivity, so people will be able to spend more time with family while pushing the economy forward. AI will unlock drug discovery and treat diseases we never thought would be possible. AI will help doctors diagnose rare diseases. AI will make our roads safer with autonomous vehicles. AI could be our teacher: helping us find information faster, interpret information, and learn new skills. AI could improve customer service and improve globalization, such as breaking the language barrier.

When AI gets better and better, human work will become less and less important and we’re able to shift more and more work to AI and robotics while taxes can be increased gradually for a more powerful universal basic income. You can’t mine crypto to any worthwhile degree on a chip in a laptop, you need warehouses full of specialist machinery. The same is true of high end image generation via AI. Adobe and Apple aren’t even competitors in these markets. I pay more to AI companies monthly than I do to Adobe in a year. Creatives have been using it for a long time already.
