- Se considera a los extintos indios taínos como los primeros pobladores del territorio. El primer asentamiento fue en el siglo XVIII por parte de españoles y criollos de San Germán cerca de un manantial con piedras lisas conocidas como "lajas", de ahí su nombre.
Lajas se desarrolló paulatinamente para la siembra de caña de azúcar en su valle y la pesca en la costa. Más tarde se desarrollará la siembra de piñas, especialmente la cabezona, por agricultores locales. En 1907, Juan Cancio Ortiz funda el Instituto de Agricultura, Artes y Oficios en el barrio Palmarejos, que luego se traslada a la vecina ciudad de San Germán y se convertirá en la actual Universidad Interamericana de Puerto Rico. A mediados del siglo XX, el área de La Parguera se convierte en un centro turístico por su Bahía Fosforescente, los canales de mangles y la confección de mariscos. En 1973, es conferido el título Cardenal de la Iglesia Católica al lajeño S.E.R. Luis Aponte Martínez, acto que suscita su actual lema de "Ciudad Cardenalicia" y al igual queda reflejado en el escudo municipal.

I grew up there.Lived in El Valle neighborhood.Went to Grant Pardo-then off to the H.S.Basketball is ALL we did!Haven't seen the place in 41 yrs.Still recognize parts of it.Even saw the spot where we would cut school ,sit on the wall and girl watch.Good video.

charrua NYC-yea,i should go back and see it.The island is tiny and I speak the language,so I'm not some lost tourista.I wouldn't see anybody though.Too many years have past.We're all from different planets now.I've been out in the world too long.God only knows the "jibaro" stuff I would be listening to from them.All inaccurate.Nope,this old wolf will slide into town,enjoy it and slide out.
The island is only 100 by 35 miles.Houston is larger than that.So is San Antonio.You could put 10 Puerto Rico's in Texas just going east to west.Thats just one western state!I'll go back eventually -it will be a moon landing for me.I'll enjoy it
You are right, but if you are going from north to south it may be 35 miles, but unless you are not in a highway you are going up and down..... But I really enjoy more the smaller roads...... Great views! 😊
