Angels Landing | Not So Scary Hike

- This video describes my hike up to Angels Landing. It was my son's 16th birthday and we were in Zion National Park this week for several backpacking & hiking adventures.
This is my all time favorite hike. The views are stunning. The 360 degree at the view can't be beat looking into Zion Canyon. The rock scrambling is fun and gets your heart pounding, both from the elevation gain and the vertical drops lurking around every corner.
Some call this the scariest hike in America. And I will admit, some of those videos spooked me at first. But with most things in my life, I like to challenge myself and see how far I would go. This was not my first hike up to Angels Landing so I was definitely more relaxed than the first time. The first time I simply told myself that I would go as far as I felt safe. And sure enough, I made it all the way to the end.
I don't have a fear of heights but they do make me nervous. I really think it is mostly a mental thing to overcome. That's where the chains were such a huge help for me, especially that first time. I knew as long as I held onto those chains tightly that I would be safe. There aren't chains all the way to the end but I would say that they are in the most vulnerable spots. And as long as you focus on one step at a time, hold onto the chains and not act a fool then you will be just fine. Let me tell ya, the views at the end are worth it.
Another thing I would recommend is going earlier in the morning, especially during the peak summer months, for a couple reasons. (1) It can above 100 degrees down in the canyon, so the earlier you can start your hike the better. Luckily for this trip the whether was awesome down in the canyon, especially for mid-June, like mid 70s awesome. (2) The crowds can be insane, even with the permit process. We were fortunate to snag a permit to hike Angels Landing before 9 am. We only came across a few people as they were making their way down. And there were only about a dozen people when we got to the top, and even that dwindled down to about 4 people as we hung around and had a snack. But on our way down, which was after 9 am, the crowds just started to build. We definitely crossed alot more people coming down the chains section and then it seemed like a continuous line of people coming up during the switchback sections. So if you can, grab that permit BEFORE 9 am.
Again, this is my all time favorite hike. Zion National Park is my favorite park. I love the canyon, I love all the different hikes you can do, and I love all the backpacking opportunities that exist (West Rim, East Rim, Kolob Canyon). And this hike is just the icing on the cake for all of that for me.

It's an experience you'll never forget. Just take your time and you'll get to the top. It's a lot safer than it looks in videos. The payoff is immense.

Thanks for the kind feedback. Yeah, I went to school at the University of Alabama during the 90's when Gene Stallings was coaching and we won a national championship in '92. Ever since then I've been hooked on college football.

I was in Zion earlier this year, and was going to hike this as one of my pit stops in the park, but it was raining heavily so I couldn’t make it, looks so fun!

First of your posts I've seen and GREAT job!! I can't believe the park service actually lets people go up that trail. I'm surprised several people don't fall off of it each day! I mean everyone has to let go of the chain to move forward and then what if your hand is slippery from exertion and being hot in the heat? Or if you don't have on the best climbing boots? Or get vertigo? That is crazy and extremely dangerous! Definitely not worth risking anyone's life to shoot a video or look at the scenery. Best, from Colorado!
I was there before the smartphone-era. Im from The Netherlands, so not used to heights at all (we are mostly below sealevel even 😂). I read a leaflet and thought it would be cool. At Scouts Landing, where the chain-part started, i stopped. I saw ppl almost jogging down, and a pregnant woman. But also ppl looking terrified... I decided not to go for it, right next to the board that warned that people did fall down an die there. 😅
It was my first time traveling solo and when i was in doubt about safety, i always thought what my mom would want me to do.
It was just recently i thought of the hike again, and that there must be RUclips video's now, to see what i have missed. I am gonna send her this. She will be proud i didnt go up 😂
Honestly, when i hadnt been alone, i think i would have been persuaded to go up. But the way down i would have regretted this deeply, i am sure...
I get anxious even watching this. In the end, i felt too unstable on my feet by the anxiety, and still think this is mostly what made it too dangerous. (Besides that it is crazy alltoghether indeed 😱🤣)
I did the hike a couple weeks ago and while it can be very dangerous I was not scared and felt comfortable on the entire hike. I'm also not really afraid of heights. It's all in the mind and it looks scarier in video. The chains also make you feel more confident. As long as you use common sense you'll be fine. I heard that most people that died don't even die on the chain section. It's usually the ones who are careless taking selfies on the ledge, etc

Hey! Thanks for watching! My second favorite day hike was Half Dome. I did that with my son in 2020. It scared me death but my son kept encouraging me and I got up those cables to one of the most amazing views of my life. The entire hike from Yosemite Valley is amazing. It's a long day, I think 14-15 miles but you get two beautiful waterfalls and the Half Dome. I think that hike was much scarier than Angels Landing.

A bit of perspective: There have been 13 deaths of hikers falling from this trail.
When was this? Angels Landing didn't look too crowded like the comments I'm been seeing. We are looking to travel there 2nd week of September. I was hesitant at first
This was in June. I was able to get a permit that allows you to hike before 9 am. I think that may be why it wasn't that crowded. But definitely much better than in the past times I've hiked it when the permit process was not in place. Thanks for watching!
Same, we went last week and got the first shuttle to the trail at 7am...wasn't too crowded. But you definitely need your early permit 😊
@@alisonmarusak3137 we stayed a total of 5 days. Me and my girlfriend tried every day and only were lucky enough to score permits for the last day at 12pm. It was definitely not crowded at all several people out up there but not overcrowded

shocking that people are allowed to go up that narrow trail....its very dangerous.....of course people rob banks too, so there's that....anything for a thrill....
