100% agreeable, I am a retired private golf club pro and take pride in my lawn, just like a golf course and at times it so frustrating because its a constant battle! I have followed you since day one and follow your prescriptions by the letter. I live in Michigan and for some reason the humidity this year has been high, with lots of rain! I guess you can say its like a round of golf , today it was good, yesterday it wasn't and who knows what it will be like the next time!!! Thanks for posting and helping us all!!
Good stuff bro!! To me, that is what makes it fun. Like being a bodybuilder - you have ups and downs and times when you are lean and times when you are not, but overall, you just keep training and eating your way through all of it.
An absolutely EXCELLENT teaching video on getting folks (like me) to calm down, take deep breaths and have a decaf coffee when these situations shown crop up. Your a good teacher and you should get a RUclips Emmy Award for this video.
Grew up in southwest Florida, so I've battled the humid, wet conditions for years. After seeing even you struggle against the wet conditions, no wonder my yard looks so bad! I'm grateful there are blades of Floritam in between my weeds! Seriously, though, thank you so much for your lawn care advice on this channel. I may not have implemented your lawn care tips well, but you have made me feel so much better that it is hard even for an expert.
I'm in North Central Florida with a St. Augustine lawn and we are predicted to get 9" of rain over 2 days. I told my wife I considered getting tarps to cover the lawn and her eyes rolled into the back of her head. 🤣
Great video Lawn Care Nut! I live near you in Punta Gorda and have relied on a lot of your videos to help me transition my lawn from cheap builders grass to St Augustine in the front and Citra Blue in the back.
I have found that if you mower a notch lower twice a year, it helps knock that older brown stuff down. Then when you mow the next week on the top setting again, the grass looks a lot better after cuts sine the brown stuff is further down in the turf.
Got a new area of Palmetto sodded in July here in Central, MS and it appears to have been attacked by the fungi - just put some fungicide out, but I fear it is too late. I may have to plug like you did and see how it works. I guess I will be waiting until after winter
great video i like how you say st aug will come back as i had a heap of trouble this year alot of people having same problems well keep up those vidio ..no storm damage thats great
Only thing ive found to get rid of grey leaf is clearys 3336F at max strength. Azoxy does an okay job. For weeds, bermuda, and fungus i just try to bag clippings in hopes to not spread these things as fast.
Allyn, one area where I really struggle is a area with limited sun due to my home, and trees. Every summer brown patch comes in and destroys about 50% of the St Aug summer growth I need to get through the winter. It’s been a struggle to keep this area from going into decline due to lack of sunlight in winter. Citrablue plugs are helping, more shade tolerant I think. This year I’ve decided to try and keep it healthy by keeping some fungicide applied every 4 weeks. Maybe, the fungicide is working, but the big change I’ve made is no irrigation at night. Im on East Coast of FL, central, and we are way down in rain, so that’s helping to. I would definitely recommend to your viewers to avoid irrigation at night. Keep up the great videos, I always enjoy them and learn.
I finally came to same conclusion this summer..... there are things you can't control and it's ok. It's the cycle of life. Everyone looks at my lawn and thinks it amazing!!!!! I see the bad stuff but they don't. Amd when I have a mild issue in a single part of my lawn. A month goes by and it's beautiful again. It just cycled at a different time due to different shade etc.
Southeast Texas here. We've had so much rain this year I got grey spot going on in my backyard but like you, I been letting it run it's course. Front looks ahhh, real nice though 👌
Dude I’m in south east Texas too.. not gonna complain about the rain, cause u know it’s been drouty ( forgive my spelling ) for years… the disease is been bad this year. The rain has kept it going and kept it strong as a whole.
Thank you so much for this video man. It has given me such reassurance about the disease ravaging my Bermuda. I’ve given up on constant fungicide apps. It seems to only affect the common Bermuda in my lawn and hardly the hybrid. Just focusing on mowing and maintenance.
I have two small sections of St Augustine left in my backyard. It does great late winter and spring, but once June hits it starts thinning out and looks terrible. After summer, it takes all winter to recover. I now have mostly Empire in the back and every year let it take over more. In front, I just turned off the water, cut it short, pumped it full of Nitrogen and let the Common Bermuda take over. St Augustine just takes too much input, plus it's terrible if you have pets.
Having the same issue in south Louisiana. Can't put down product either due to the storms. Same issue on my side but carpet grass coming in strong from neighbors lawn guy blowing live seedings in my yard. Low light, stays moist and slow growth. Stay safe in the hurricane.
You called it. Here in Coastal NC we got 13 inches of rain in July plus was insane humid and crazy still and humid many nights. Sure enough Grey leaf spot in my Palmetto St Augustine. Put down bit of liquid fungicide and going to put down nitrogen tomorrow and just let it do it's thing. Seems to be improving fast already.
I’m dealing with all the same problems with my Palmetto. GLS everywhere, yellowing patches, a few bare patches that browned out and some patches of torpedo grass I choose not to acknowledge. My lawn actually looked better during the spring drought but it is what it is. Not going to drive myself insane trying to fix it.
This video actually made me feel better mine looks the same after the cut and I was wondering wth am I doing wrong lol thank you for the good info and content
If I replace dying Bermuda with Palmetto St. Augustine, but my neighbor has Zoysia, will the St. Augustine not take over his lawn eventually? I understand it runs like crazy and chokes other grasses. Thank you.
My St. Augustine is floating so bad, the rain has washed out the sand the builder put in over the clay and it just floats on the roots and thatch. My mower is set to cut as high as it can and just scalps it each week. I'm think I need to have company come out and dethatch it and level it with a bunch of sand so they roots can grow back down to something. There are some spots where your feet sink in 10" when walking on it. So over it.
Lots of rain & humidity in SWFL and it's definitely stressing the Floritam compared to what the yard looked like in May & June. So much rain, I think it washes out the nutrients in the soil. Can't wait for September 31.
Saw the GLS hitting my Citra Blue and made the investment for some you-guessed-it fungicide, but haven't thrown down because Debby came for a visit. Ah well...this video has given me food for thought for the future.
Have you ever talked about managing torpedo grass in floritam st Augustine? I don’t think I’ve heard you mention it and it’s running rampant on the east coast of florida
Anytime I get problems in my St. Augustine. The only thing that comes back in that spot is weeds! Would love to know how to get the weeds under control!
the key is to keep the St Aug thick. We all face problems that allow weeds to invade - its one of the challenges of living in FL. This is a tropical jungle here and the jungle is always trying to take back the land
What do you think about using MOP for Florida's rainy season? I mean you said it, we have lots of water and wet areas, maybe a higher salt potassium would help with some of the disease we see.
Looking good overall. Keep enjoying that mow and push that disease outta here. Can’t wait to see you change a section of your yard to citra blue st aug one day. Very intrigued by that one.
Since St. Aug. is so susceptible to everything, I've been wondering if I should be throwing down my fert instead of squirtin it. Seems like it just doesn't rinse off--it dries leaving spots even when I irrigate right after squirtin.
I live around Punta Gorda area with 1 month old St. Augustine. Was looking great then over 1/2 of it in 2 days went light green followed by tons of brownish dead looking with grey leaf spots / bite marks/ holes. Web worms? Fungus ? Hit it with last Saturday “Cross Check plus Insecticide” Sunday Eagle 20EW On Monday, I hit it with Milorganite. We haven’t had a good soaking of natural rain this week so I’ve been hitting it with my sprinklers at night time. I think it’s looking a little bit greener. I’m just getting a little frustrated and paranoid right now. Any advice ? by the way you’re doing a phenomenal job with your channel ….
Disease is bad this year in Se MI we’ve had double our normal rains plus some and all the low spots and poor drainage areas and the actual drainage areas have combination of dollar spot and brown patch if I looked close enough there’s probably gray leaf too. But I am doing nothing damage is done plus we’re continuing to get lots of rain so 🤷♂️ fungicides ain’t going to do much. Just push it out with fert come fall time
I currently live in Illinois and we get humid due to all the corn. I lived near Augusta, GA for a year. Georgia was downright miserable in the summer. I imagine Florida is worse still. You guys can have that. 😂
I live local in a new construction. How long does it take to get warm weather lawns to get great ? I been using a local fertilizing company. I’m thinking about doing it myself.
Chinch bugs, too much/little rain, fungus, excessive heat, weeds and more weeds. I lose three fourths of my Floratam a season. Grows back, repeat again and lose to something new. Perhaps a manic mowing of as short as it gets might help.
Just moved to Florida (Jax area) and this is my first st Augustine lawn and it is rough. It is riddled with weeds, dead spots, uneven ground , and I didn’t have a lawn mower for a few weeks and during this last storm it shot up and just got one today and basically scalped the lawn today. I only cut it down to 5 inches but took off about 4-5 inches off. I’m trying to get that beautiful lawn but not sure where to start especially this late in the season. Any pointers for a neglected lawn would be awesome. Also do you have a video about what you do as far as yearly schedule when you fertilize watering schedules, weeding, ect.
I hire TruGreen a couple months ago! I’m in Bradenton. I want to fire them and take care of my Saint Augustine myself! No idea where to start! I’ve watched a lot of videos! Time of year seems to determine what treatments to apply! Is there a beginner course? Any advice would be greatly appreciated
Almost took turf management in college, instead took agribusiness with a minor in crops, crop production and horticulture. But yes golf courses use a ton of chems
Subscribed!! I live in Riverview and man do I need your help with my pro vista grass. I would to hear your thoughts. I can send pictures if you could look
Allen, first , I live in Augusta, Georgia, I have done very little maintenance over 20 ears. My lawn is common Bermuda. I have a very bad infestation of Crabgrass. Prolly 255 to 405 infestation across the lawn in patches. It is awful, What would be your suggestion to get the crabgrass under control ??
Thanks for all the great content advice and products. However are you growing a new hybrid grass called pathway grass? 😅 Have you considered Polymeric Sand in the pavers?
I hate my St. Augustine. Constantly needs something, whether it be insecticide, fungicide, herbicide, fertilizer, etc.. It goes wrong if there's the slightest problem. I'd have Zoysia, but my entire neighborhood is SA.
He lives in areas of Florida that has fertilize bans during the rainy season. The nitrogen and chems running off into the water and washing out to the gulf, red tie... google Florida coastal fertilizer bans.
Maybe the gray leaf spot is worse in San Antonio, because when I got it in my lawn the lawn died down to the soil and nothing grew back. However, when I appled ordinary corn meal (not corn gluten meal), the disease died and the grass came back greener, more dense, and faster growing. Or at least it did every year from 2002 through 2022 when I moved to a house where I have not seen the fungal spots. 20 years in a row, and it worked every year. Texas A&M University started out looking at corn meal in the 90s, but apparently they could not replicate the results (or whatever), because now they are completely unwilling to look at it again. St Augustine seems to be unique in the reaction to the corn meal, as others have tried it, especially in cool season grasses, and they did not see the anti fungal property. But it does work for people all over Texas and many in Florida. If you buy corn meal from the feed store in bulk, the application rate 15 to 20 pounds per 1,000 square feet. Give it 3 full weeks before you evaluate whether it worked or not. If it seemed to work but did not take all the disease out, corn meal is safe to reapply as often as you like. The corn meal works by increasing the population of the Trichoderma fungus, which is predatory to other fungi. Once the Trichoderma finishes decomposing the fungi which were decomposing the corn meal, the increased population turns to other fungi like the one causing the gray leaf spot. Corn meal has the added benefit of being a low level organic fertilizer, which means that if you apply it only to the areas where you have the disease, you will end up with bright green patches where the fungus was. The solution to that is to fertilize again with corn meal but cover the entire lawn with it.
I know you maybe busy and hope to get your feedback on this, I live in the gulf coast part of Florida I am not knowledgeable on the grass type that I have. I am dealing with some weeds of course and working always on this issue . I will put a link at the end of these questions of my work in progress. I have approximately in total front and back 2100 sq feet. I am not sure what grass seed I can use to overseed my lawn through the winter. It has been suggested by neighbor's to use 2 types of grass seeds Perennial Rye Grass seed or Annual Rye Grass seed both right now are equally fair priced to buy I get more seeds for the Annual price wise or if there another option it would be great to here your thought, also if you have an idea for pre emergent that will keep crab grass and weeds to a minimum to throw down with the overseeding any suggestion or thoughts are greatly appreciated please and thank you
if you have St Augustine grass it is not recommended to overseed it for winter. Also, I live in Bradenton and we don't usually go dormant anyway - the grass we have stays green all winter as long as you irrigate. If you have zoysia or bermuda you can overseed with annual rye
@@Thelawncarenut thank you so very much for the time to respond I just wanted to make sure cuz I really don't know what kind of grass I have but I want to take a video and take it down to either Home Depot or Lowe's and ask someone there in the lawn and garden and ask them what kind of grass I have cuz I live in Tarpon springs I just wanted to add something to the grass I don't have to she's coming together really well thank you so much for that feedback
@@Thelawncarenut man have you ever heard of all root rot? Evidently that's what my st. Aug had and now I just have giant dirt spots through out my yard

Great video on how not to obsess over petty shit.

Does it help to clean the underneath of your lawnmower to prevent the spreading of the fungus?

Typos
Since St. Aug. is so susceptible to everything, I've been wondering if I should be throwing down my fert instead of squirtin it. Seems like it just doesn't rinse off--it dries leaving spots even when I irrigate right after squirtin.
You do need to apply the Recognition/Fusilade each season just like you need to spray weed control in your flower beds. Its never a one and done.
LCN..do you have any content on blanket crabgrass? stuff is taking over my st aug here in FL, especially after all the rain
St Augustine is the prettiest grass! Soft too!

Have you tried baking soda?
@@rebeccaz789 I have tried baking soda on crabgrass and Dallisgrass. It worked both times. I have not tried it on fungal disease, though.
Time to sharpen the blade of that green new deal mower you got there
I got your ban right here. Unless the county wants to replace my lawn, I water and fertilize as needed.
as I read the laws more carefully, I find quite a bit of bullshit in them. Makes me wonder.
Forgive me if you’ve covered this a bunch, I don’t watch all of your videos, but do you ever consider bagging your clippings?
Seems like things were so much easier in Indiana.
So does the Bermuda come back after you spray pro vista with glyphosate?
yes. It always comes back.
