Seb Coe was the greatest Olympic 1500m runner of alltime!!! Two back to back Gold Medals in the Olympic 1500m!! He should've been selected for the 1988 Brittish 1500m Olympic team and then he would've made it 3 Gold medals in the Olympic 1500m.
A couple of side notes. The other New Zealander in the 56 - 1500 meter final was Neville Scott, he suffered from crippling insecurity and was an alcoholic who disappeared from the scene for years after this race, popped up again in 63 determined to make the NZ Olympic team in 64 and did so at 5000 meters. Herb Elliot's coach, (Percy Cerruty) said of Peter Snell in the 1964 final, ( somewhat tongue in cheek) that he should have been disqualified for "not trying hard enough".
What an honest comment from Herb Elliot regards his retirement from competition. Would dearly loved to have seen him run against Peter Snell when both were at their peak though.
I'm sure if Herb had trained properly from late 58 to the Rome Olympics, he would have been running seconds faster than his medal winning - world record - time. Indeed, even though it never comes up, I'm pretty sure a properly prepared Herb Elliott could have won the 800m/1500m double in Rome.
Well, Herb, at 20, in 1958 was definitely in better shape ( much faster over 800m ) in 1958. And, of course, he didn't train well in 1959, and then rushed to get to back to fitness in time for the Olympics. I'm pretty sure had he trained consistently through 1959/60, he could have won the 800m/1500m double in Rome.
Doco seems to end at 1992. Possibly dated. I wouldn't get too upset about that, anyone who knows their running knows he is the greatest. I loved his win in the 5000 at Athens as well.
This was made in 1992 when he was still running world juniors. It would be great to get his interviews and races from 1996 to 2004 but most are all blocked from uploading.
great documentation. thaank you!!
Steve Ovett. Unbeaten in 45 straight mile/1500 metre races over a period of 3 years before the Olympic final in 1980.

Simon ,I think I would have put my money on 'ol Herb to be the winner .At his peak he was unbeatable !!
Yes excellent doc.. goes out to you Dad... Brian Counsell... Olympic Harriers Wellington New Zealand.
What an amazing runner Herb Elliot was - and such a pity that he retired at age 22 as he hadn’t yet hit his physical peak.
Yes, there was no $ in running back then and Elliot made millions in the private sector!!
@@richardmilliken5651 Also, the stress and pressure were like going to firing squad every race.
I once ran against Herb- sort of - in a cross country race in England 1962. Herb wasn't in great shape then...but he still beat me!
@@musik102 That sounds like Herb!

Jim Ryun was the world record holder. He just didn't train for altitude the way athletes do now.
Wow great doc!

They did ignore Edwin Flack, an Australian, who won both 800 and 1500 metres at Athens 1896.
That is right😂
That is correct.

We have 400 meters and 800 meters. Why didn’t they make it /1600 meters which would have been very close to a mile?
As I understand it, it’s based on the Roman “milie” a distance of around 1600 yards. This then became the 1500 metres. Happy for someone to correct.
The Moroccans led by Saeed Aouita are the runners to beat
morrocan hicham el guerrouj is the king of 1500 all time
Yes, it looks like his mile/1500m will never be beaten. Now, doesn't that strike you as a bit fishy?
