- Inspiration and a clear vision are the starting points for creative tasks. It's on a blank sheet of paper that they first acquire form, solely through a pen and the hand that guides it.
The sketch is the most emotional form of an idea. This is why the designers first work out their ideas exclusively with a pen and paper. The concern here is not feasibility. Instead, the sketch is intended to bring life to the character of the model, which then remains the guiding image throughout the design process.

Amateur car designer myself (so not pretending to be anywhere professional), I just wanted to mention, in my experience, the whole "all the emotion is in the first 2d lines drawn" concept is definitely not the only way to be doing a decent car design. I myself work purely in 3d (using subdivision modeling in Blender) and start off with a poorly drawn simple boxed out car shape (my sketching ability is amateurish to childish) and then work by extracting the stronger curves and proportions I notice that "work" and bringing these out and further strengthening these. So working like a sculptor that "liberates" the beauty from a firstly blunt and empty shape. While people observing the first stages of my work might consider it (and in this stage they are correct) without "vision", "strength" or "emotion", the work after some hours converges to become a lot more esthetically pleasing. Just wanting to encourage those who would like to embark on (amateur) car design and have no good 2d skills like those shown in the video!

You can study Industrial Design or Transportation Design discipline to become a car designer.
I have the same exact dream for Ferrari . I finished a design college in Italy and now i got accepted to masters education on Automobile Design . All i can say is practice and follow what you dream of . Never let anyone get in your way . Not every person has a dream . It's a unique thing . Be aware of it . Good Luck my friend .

Why do people seem to like all these smooth, blobs of cars. what happened to actual passion for the design for cars and not just making them look like every other single modern car in existence?

CosmicFirestorm its called "the trend" its alot of money to start a off trend design. Its a hit or miss that companies not willing to take.
I know it’s an opinion but the only cars that look nice blocky are jeeps, and other cars that are blocky look so unsophisticated.
they have that bubble/blob look because that shape allows the material to absorb more kinetic energy on impact, making the vehicle safer. Take it from a MS in Mechanical Engineering student who loves cars and design, and prefers the boxy look of the BMW 2002, E21, 3.0CS over anything of current date.

Im not gonna lie they are acting so extra lmao. Like bruh it is not that deep the car is not emotions. it is simply an aesthetically pleasing exterior and the interior is just a pleasant interface for the driver. The only emotion in this process should be happiness and excitement when the driver is operating the vehicle and accomplishment when the car is turned into reality from the original idea.

Every modern car designer uses hand drawing, it is step one to the process, generally you sketch until you have the design, then they move it to sketching on 2d software like professional paint programs. Then its moved to 3d software, clay modelling, ETC.
I can make cars looks good than those BMW designers.......contack me BMW ceo..
