Yeah he does say that some of it is for the opportunity to test the gear, and some of it is to loan to friends. This isn't all for him out of what he sees as necessity
Not a pro, not even an amateur. I am headed to Tanzania for 3 weeks. Taking R5 Mark II, 100-500, 24-105, 50 mm 1.4 if it arrives. Dji RS 4, Falcam Treeroot, Prograde 4 TB.
The tripod is pretty useless on safari, leave it behind. A monopod can work but I generally don't even bother with that. Take a second body in case the first one craps out. Borrow one if needed but absolutely take 2 bodies. Not sure what you will need the 50mm for.......landscapes are better with 24-70mm.
Yup, good call on all this. I went on a feildschool safari way back in 1994. I packed only 2 sets of clothes as I got custom made clothes (cheap!) when I went through Egypt, snacks are great to have as they also offer comfort and of course camera gear!
I can just see your friends at airport security… “sir do you know what’s in your bag”, “well um, I think, um - that man over there packed it - yeah the one with the BIG FRO… his shirt says I SHOOT…”
Woohooo i can't believe Jared uses the same air rocket blower that i do!! i feel better now.. i dont have any of the other stuff but at least i got something right!!
Got a trip upcoming to Kenya. Just ordered myself a Canon R6 mark 2 as I want an upgrade to my old 7D (mark1) Swithering over getting the 100-500mm or 200-800mm as I've still got my old 100-400mm 5.6. So I guess I'll see how it goes with the new body and make a decision after that.
Salient point, take what works for you and covers the range which gives the best opportunity for intended shots and more importantly the totally unexpected shot.
Great video to watch. Thank you. I’m really going to have to decide whether I keep shooting with Canon RF and my current R5 or with Sony A1’s. Either way will probably upgrade one of these to get pre-capture. Listening to your weekly podcasts and always enjoy them. Take care and have a fun trip.
I’d be tempted to ditch the 400 and take teleconverters and the 100-300, especially if I was going without an army of friends/lens-sherpas. Hope you have a great trip!
Great video! Appreciate the explanations. Do you use a laptop to backup files to the external drives or is there another way to do that without having to drag along a larger laptop?
Thank for this amazing video... again. I want to go on Safari in 2026. I have the Sony a6700 and want to buy the Sony 100-400 GM as my main wildlife lens . For Game drives at dusk and dawn though, I was wondering if I should get a f/1.4 prime lens (e.g. 85mm) or rather a not so bright zoom lens (e.g. Tamron 35-150mm f2-2.8). What du you think?
My safari kit was: Canon R5 and R7 15-35mm f 2.8, 28-70mm f 2, 70-200mm f 2.8 and 100-500mm f 4.5-7.1 A tripod, extra batteries and cleaning kit. Got everything I needed and took some nice photos.
I know what you mean by don't want to lose everything. When I went on Safari many years ago I bought a second hand Fuji AX3 to replace my STX1 camera and trusted the warranty from the shop so didn't test first. BIG MISTAKE. Shot many films and realised when I got them back from processing that the shutter was faulty. Had about 3 photos come out OK.
Haven't gone to Africa yet but I do have an Alaska trip in the works that I'm planning on taking both my a1 and a7SIII with the holy trinity plus the 200-600. So two bodies and four lenses with the Atomos Ninja V, batteries, MBP, blah blah blah and all the things. I'm only taking one tripod, it's a manfrotto oss with the mhxpro-bhq2 (definitely didn't remember that, it's just sitting next to me!). Also taking a couple of GoPro's. Should be a good test run though since we'll be on foot most of the way!
Can I go on the Safari and so far with my R1 compared to my R3 the joystick is just a tad smaller and when I have the camera to my eye, finding it with my thumb just does not feel the same most people probably won’t notice it, but as much as I shoot my R3 that’s the only thing so far that I don’t like about the R1oh, and the right button down at the bottom next to the play in the magnifying button I wish I could get rid of that
Karibu Kenya hope to bump into you in one of the parks. After the safari you can choose to donate the canon r3 and the100-500 combo to me. Currently shooting wildlife on an r7. Can’t wait to see the magical photos from your safaris
I have always been a Nikon man, but in the age of mirrorless they have fallen way behind unfortunately. I am going to make the switch to Canon in the next 12 months unless Nikon can catch up on autofocus performance. I really don't want to, but it's the logical choice with the state of Nikon these days. If I'm going to switch from a Nikon DSLR F mount to Z mount and change all my glass, I may as well switch to Canon, they are leading the industry at the moment. Staying with Nikon these days is just fanboy cope, even though I hate to admit that.
@@BarneyGumbl3Are you talking about the Z9 and Z8? I own a Z8 and the autofocus is pretty good especially if we’re talking wildlife and in the middle of the day at 1/32000 and under it’s really easy to capture pretty much anything
Only one sony lens? that sony 28-70mm would be nice to see also ,enjoyed your view on last years safari and the unique cheat views with camera on a stick for low angle which everyone copies now,
Went on safari in May 2024. Brought R5 with 100-500, 24-105 and 14-35 (and 2x teleconverter). Didn't use the 14-35 much. Used the 24-105 in town and non-game drive shots. 100-500 was used mostly. Got some great shots.
He did mention those gear in the video. You can google and you’lll know the price/cost. But that doesnt matter. Use what you can afford and what other people bring shouldnt concern you. You’ll use your own gear.
Wow looks like total overkill, having said that i dont know much about wildlife or safari photography. Looks like an amazing trip. I want to do an Antarctica photography trip but i can only dream to do that, maybe one day.
I took SONY 200-600 with 1.4 tc and 24-105 (perfect for hot air balloon). Bring some sort of plastic cover for lens/camera due to constant dust layer. You can buy large bags of local nuts in Nairobi airport for cheap. Bring empty bean bag which your guide will fill for you. Sneakers, long light weight pants, long sleeves, hoodies, layer up. Cool nights/ mornings. Rare if any mosquitos, but staying covered is a good bet.
The pink pills are great but you really should take Ivermectin as well (or just get it in Africa at a pharmacy). The locals take it weekly to ward off parasitic and viral stuff. Works for the out-of-towners as well.
Honestly massively surprised you're happy with 400mm. I had a 600mm of safari and while it was a little tight sometimes, most of the time it was great, or i could've used even more reach. Edit: I'd switch the r5 and r1. Zoom lets you get perfect framing, r5 lets you crop in a pinch.
2:04 🍑
Was going to say something cheeky…
Missing the Nikon at the top of the bag. But that’s just a personal preference. 😊
That's Asda price!
I took two camera bodies, Nikon Z9 and Nikon Z8, and just TWO lenses, my 180-600 and the 24-120, laptop, batteries, cards and GoPro 10.
Time flies. I swear I just watched last years video last week.
been almost exactly a year to the day
As a pro, you are carrying more gears than Star Wars camera team.
😂😂
Yeah he does say that some of it is for the opportunity to test the gear, and some of it is to loan to friends. This isn't all for him out of what he sees as necessity
Bloody hell Jarod, don't go without me!!!!! We were there in 2010, it was fantastic! I see Manny is going with you!! He's a photographer!
Go to your room sun

Dropping 4-5K on a body not even being an amateur is a bit wild but if you got the money send it ig
So as an amateur, I'd be well equipped bringing my Sony a6700 and 70-350mm?! That's good to know 😅
Jared, who do you use for equipment insurance?
Yup, good call on all this. I went on a feildschool safari way back in 1994. I packed only 2 sets of clothes as I got custom made clothes (cheap!) when I went through Egypt, snacks are great to have as they also offer comfort and of course camera gear!

What laptop are you taking? And do you edit on the go or do you just save all your images on ext drives and edit later at home?
Have a great trip Jared! Can't wait to see the images you create this year and watch all the upcoming video's

Looks epic! For the photos taken with the 100-300 2.8, what focal length were you using? Across the range or mostly one end or the other?
I've been on 2 safaris out in Tanzania, took just my Sony A1 and Sony 100-400mm and got great shots myself.
Is the RF100-500 L lens fast enough during the early morning hours just before sunrise?
Salient point, take what works for you and covers the range which gives the best opportunity for intended shots and more importantly the totally unexpected shot.
Do you pack a laptop to do your file backup, or something else? Thx.
Have a safe and wonderful journey, Jared

If you go for precapture, go for SONY. Far better implementation.
What are your thoughts on taking a tele extender? 1.4X?
Have you not watched Jared for very long?
He’s made it patently clear that he really doesn’t like tele converters.
I used the prograde digital 8tb ssd and another 4tb option as a third backup. First copy are the cards that I didn’t reformat.

Jered I think I saw you here in Kenya two weeks ago, at Amboseli park
You did, I was there about 8 days ago
So Jared, how much does the Africa trip cost? Tell me how that works. Looks like it would be an educational experience.
My safari kit was:
Canon R5 and R7
15-35mm f 2.8, 28-70mm f 2, 70-200mm f 2.8 and 100-500mm f 4.5-7.1
A tripod, extra batteries and cleaning kit. Got everything I needed and took some nice photos.
Thanks for the video Jared. Any mosquito repellent?
Didn’t take any
Sweet setup! Hope you’re bringing a Sherpa to help pack it around.
What do you think of Rick Sammon using a smartphone instead of a regular camera for close shots on safari?

u dont use Cleanig Stuff for Sensor and Lens ??
Anythoughts on the Canon 200-800??

Hi Jared, I might be the only person interested in this, but how did you ship all of that gear to Kenya? Also 2:04 those squats are really paying off!
?? He explains that in the video.
2X R6Mark II, 200-400 F4 with built in 1.4 extender, RF adapter, 24-105 f4 and a 16MM 2.8.
Looks like the Canon money truck was early this year. With only the one body Sony looks to slacking off.
Yeah canon is currently reign the japan camera market share at yodobashi all r1 on the top and r5ii in the top 5
How does one sign up on the Friends of Jared list?

Too big, just bring a teleconverter

What's the total cost of all those gears going with u?... 😅
Nice pants lol , I love your sense of humor
I see a problem.... No nikon 😢
Too much weight!
Single point autofocus only is old technology. Move on try a Sony or Canon or Panasonic, best autofocus systems to date.

That’s my standard lens load out for the R6II. Covers everything. I seldom take the 70-200 2.8 since I got the 100-500
