Everybody should do and be the exact same thing. All women should have long hair and all men should have muscles. If that doesn't happen, they are lesser people and should be made fun of and also some of their human rights should be revoked. Women with short hair and masculine clothes hold no human value whatsoever and also let's all assume they don't have feelings. Men who are feminine don't deserve to live. Yeah, no. Yes. You don't want to over do it. But the odd piece of self-deprecation here and there can be socially useful. In a position of power it can be useful to get people to like you, but you don't want to overdo it, otherwise they will end up not respecting you.

so then the joke is offensive because it offends you but then in that case it stops offending you because it isn't offending anyone but then it offends you ... sir, you have created a paradox
it actually starts offending me when nobody is offended. you got something wrong there. when a non offensive joke is told i am just the only one offended. thats how it is. and when most, or better, all people are offended its when i get my satisfaction. i nourish my soul from butthurt offended people.
Ohhh, so it's more about the general reaction than the joke itself... the joke is a doorway to what you really want, and you can therefore label each joke as a good door or a bad door... Interesting.
Jo Jo there's a difference between self-depreciation & making jokes about others (Leno, Fallon, & all other nighttime talk show hosts do this in their monologues). I believe you may be confused regarding the definition of self-depreciating? It is "the act of reprimanding oneself by belittling, undervaluing, or disparaging oneself, or being excessively modest. It can be used in humor and tension release." Those who have watched Conan O'Brien know he constantly made, & to this day, makes fun of himself. He's the best at it & the funniest.
Jo Jo What happened between Leno & O'Brien, being "mean", & any other sidebar you bring up is irrelevant to my original comment regarding self-depreciation. I stated my opinion: O'Brien is funnier than Degeneres at self-deprecation. Once again, to self-depreciate is to make fun of oneself. It has nothing to do with making fun of others. I don't know why you keep reverting to your "he's mean"; so that negates his ability to make fun of himself argument; the two styles are not mutually exclusive. Lastly, it has nothing to do with my original comment. I never wrote that O'Brien is the nicest host; so that's why I provided you with the definition to the specific term of self-depreciation. I did not explain comedy to you. Have a great day :)
I tossed a mint after walking into class, the mint went too high and hit one of the ceiling fans, bounced off and hit a ruler which had flown into my teacher's general "sausage" area. Then I said: wow teacher, you sure had the "balls" to take that and the class burst out laughing. I can't tell what type of joke this is but I certainly did not feel good after detention.
try to relate more to other people, it's true that everybody is different, but that has a limit, we're all humans so in A LOT of things we're all the same. Would you judge yourself for what you think others might judge you? That's how i got better at it.
I have that fear too, I hesitate sometimes. Something that helped me is this question. How will the thing that happened affect my life in 1 year from now? The answer is always the same - whatever happened - It doesn't matter
I felt a bit uncomfortable when I met someone on a date, that was kinda awkward because we're just communicating through text and chat, it's different when he's in front of you but in order to make the situation light I crack a joke and both of us are laughing and that was the beginning of our closeness.
I’ve been a fan of Ellen since before her shows, when she was doing standup. I’ve adored her style most of my adult life, and have done most of these things naturally, probably *because* of her influence that I wasn’t even aware of. I loved this video!
i am a very sarcastic person. im not mean i m just sarcastic...but people never understand that im joking. for example if i said i am like malala, people would tel me that i am not not knowing that i am joking...anyone relates?
How to be likeable as the title and Ellen as the thumbnail is like Jack Daniels whiskey being the sponsor for AA! Love the sense of humour and the cheeky attack on Allen! Great job.
you can make fake jokes and pretent to be a fake you so people like that fake persona, or you can be real and have less people like you but those people are genuine and like the genuine you
I mean, if your genuine you is unlikable then if you're being genuine, no one is going to like you. If your genuine you cares enough to make "fake" jokes continuously and is "fake" lovable all the time, people are going to like you. And guess what? If you're making a habit out of being a likable person, you are a likable person.
Ooooh such a special unique guy. Congrats to you for not beign a "fake" "joker" you`re not like the rest of ´em no siree. Because God forbid you actually would be interested in making other people laugh and have a good time with them. No one is like that! Certainly not you. You`re better. You read Nietszche and Camus. If your knee jerk reaction (emphasys on jerk) is to alienate others, it would actually be better for everyone that you would not be yourself. Everyone except for your entitlement that is.
No, not at all. When as a morose and grumpy adolescent someone told me : 'Its OK to be miserable and negative because its easy to be morose and miserable. Just remember no one is going to like, even less love you for it. YOU control YOU. These are YOUR moods that YOU chose to adopt. Stop being a victim of your age/hormones. There is a cheerful you in there and that's the one we love, can we have him back please?' Being cheerful and happy when you dont actually feel happy is absolutely NOT being hypocritical or lying. Its driving yourself to where you want to be. If you are in a negative mood and are letting everyone know then you have chosen to be a victim and decided to punish everyone else for your own laziness.
Your videos are always always bring insights far beyond what most of these self help gurus are bringing to the conversation. You're always fresh and innovative. Very impressed.
But she doesn't have a formula tho, that is not an act it comes from a great personality that is also funny, that is rare to find and really not worth faking, making jokes like that without having her consistent personality will make people question your honesty.
Yeah, I worked for a woman who was dragon lady one, then brilliant the other. Her establishment is wildly successful and renowned in the region for its industry. She had a department manager who emulated all her dragon examples but he lacked brilliance. He was merely a douche copying someone who did things naturally.
quick tip, just say hi to a stranger and treat them like a friend. so far people seem either ignore me or have a nice conversation with me, which usually leads to them having a nice view on me
Is it possible that because Ellen normally never makes sarcastic jokes about people it feels harsher when she does do it like she did with Liza? Because that's kind of how I feel about it. Like with the late Joan Rivers I would have never felt personally attacked if I had ever met her and she would've started to crack sarcastic jokes at my expense because she did it with literally anybody including herself and the social circles she moved in herself. But if I were in Liza's chair having to hear Ellen make such a personal joke about me I would have felt just as uncomfortable as her.
When someone usually never makes anyone the butt of a joke and suddenly you're the butt of their joke, it's not unusual to question why. When someone usually makes everyone the butt of their jokes, you'd probably never question why you're being targeted because you're hardly being singled out.
Ellen is a genious!)))Love her! Great video! The narrator is so animated and really easy to listen. Hopefully, some will learn to make jokes that make people have fun - not embarrassed. Stay cool!
Hello, I am a definitely human person who is looking for tips on interactions, as I find earth intriguing and must blend as a human, not that I need to, as I am very, very human. Charismatic elements are a human trait yes no? I, an authentic homo-sapien is in need of advice from my human comrades on this human-human platform. Scincerely, Unit X23dd2 (My mission- I mean human- name is XDD, as humans do not have numeral figures or fidgets in the label their incubators select for them.)
My problem is I don't see myself as much of a texter. I don't normally hold conversations over messages unless it's specifically for the purposes of meeting up. Guess that's an issue. I just don't really know what I'm supposed to talk to people about.
Vurtax Then you need to get a hobby or join a club and then talk to them about that. Talk about your day. Talk about your experiences. Talk about cheesy stuff occasionally too, don't shy away from showing them you're relatable. Also, show genuine interest in their lives.Ask them about their days and lives but don't be pushy. If they don't want to talk about something, then don't push the conversation. Crack a joke instead. Also, never show pity if they're telling you a problem. Compliment them instead. Tell them how strong they are for getting through shit. Nobody likes being looked down upon but everyone likes being praised because everyone puts genuine effort into getting by every day. You should also look at them in the eye when you talk. Nobody like talking to someone who's looking away from them. And you should never say "Sorry" in situations where you can say "Thanks" (e.g. :"Thanks for listening to me/being here with me." instead of "Sorry for talking for so long/dragging you here with me.") Everyone likes being appreciated but nobody likes being treated like some kind of charity when they're just trying to be friendly and getting to know you. What else, what else... Show them you're good at stuff but don't brag about being better than them. If they're interested in something you're good at, ask them to hang out and maybe teach them how it's done. If they do something genuinely impressive and interesting, start a conversation about them and get them to teach you. If you're at school or uni tell them to help you with class and do assignments together. What am I forgetting... Oh, complimenting people is nice but don't overdo it. Compliments should be rare and far in between days. Daily compliments are boring and feel fake. Eventually they'll feel hollow if you always make them and nobody will take you seriously or ask you for advice again. Be sure to give advice only when you know what you're talking about. Otherwise, offer support instead and tell them you're willing to help them find answers or just be there for them. I'm forgetting shit but, still, moving on... Find common ground and common interests but don't go overboard. Nobody likes to hang out with some half-assed copy of themselves. If you want to fit in, try being you instead of being like the person you want to hang out with. If the "you" isn't interesting enough, make it. If hanging out or trying to fit in with people feels way too forced, to the point where you're not even enjoying it anymore, look for new friends but don't forget people who talk to you. Remain friendly and maybe things will change once you show you're not some kind of lapdog, always there for them 24/7. People like to hang out with people who aren't obedient slaves. Oh, and you can refuse calls to go out too but never during the first 2 weeks of a friendship and never in quick succession. Be sure to be honest instead of making shitty excuses though. People will appreciate the relatable "I'm too tired/I'm hungover/I slept only 2 hours/I've been studying all day so I can't go out" over some asspull story that could never possibly happen. Oh, that's it. Hang out with people who you genuinely think would be fun to hang out with. Not everybody just for the sake of "being popular". I've been "popular" in middle and high school. It sucked. If my youtube name is any indication, I don't give a fuck what people think of me. I don't care about being popular and neither should you. 1 true friend is always better than 20 acquaintances. That's the jist of it. Knock yourself out, prom king.
♞ Go Fuck Yourself ♞ Just saved this all to a notepad file. Thanks, I'll be sure to try and put this into practice. Thing is I do have hobbies, probably too many of them at this point. Probably why it never feels like i get enough done because I can only make such little progress on any of them.
U see, the problem is that I think my sense of humour is kinda like Ellen’s, but also I sometimes make jokes at someone else’s expense, BUT only because most of my friends do that and it seems like the only way to make them laugh?
Good luck making holocaust jokes on a first date or insulting the boss in a job interview. I think the point of this is that it's safe humour for when you need to make a good impression - if you're on the same page as someone and aren't worried about offending them then make any joke you like.
Fucking normies. The ellen show - that is normie as fuck. The 3 types of jokes mentioned in this video - I think this isn't normie comedy. Everybody I know loves joking on other people's expense. Nobody around here jokes like Ellen, in a self deprecating way. Indeed, people are giving their best efforts to offend somebody and this isn't America where people get easily offended. Its real fun. t. slav

so then the joke is offensive because it offends you but then in that case it stops offending you because it isn't offending anyone but then it offends you ... sir, you have created a paradox
+Muhammad Muhdhar vat da fuck does that mean
No, that's what prejudice is for. Once a joke is offensive, prejudice kicks in and keeps it that way no matter what. Paradox solved! :)
...kinda.
it actually starts offending me when nobody is offended. you got something wrong there. when a non offensive joke is told i am just the only one offended. thats how it is. and when most, or better, all people are offended its when i get my satisfaction. i nourish my soul from butthurt offended people.
Ohhh, so it's more about the general reaction than the joke itself... the joke is a doorway to what you really want, and you can therefore label each joke as a good door or a bad door... Interesting.
I needed this... All my dead baby jokes aren't making me any friends :(
Am I the only person who died laughing at this?............awkward

I think he has a crush on ellen.
She doesnt have a crush on him though lol
Ellen is a Lesbian....
i know i do.
Fuck I think I have a crush on Ellen
I don’t get why people like Ellen and Malala. She is not at all funny, fake and looks like a witch. 😑 👎🏼
IMO, Conan O'Brien is a much better example for using self-depreciating humour.
Team schlansky
Hahaha
very inportant.
I can't tell what type of joke this is but I certainly did not feel good after detention.
hhahahahah is that a true story xD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!??????????
JustJason poor fellow.but u made everyone laugh before getting out of the class..
Sometimes you gotta take the chance
It is the one that has a loser based on that reaction.
Lucky this was not an Asian school!
Ellen is known to be one of the meanest people in show business though....
Couldn't understand instructions, made entire black community angry with racist joke.
Help...
Start hanging out with racists, they may like your jokes. Hope that helped.
No, they wouldn't because it would be a joke. And they wouldn't like it if people were joking with their bullshit.

Mo Hassi I'm Triggered.
Really great video. You don't need to hurt someone to be funny.
Appreciate that!
how about a video on overcoming the fear of beaing judged or on how to get over the fact then i embaressed myself
try to relate more to other people, it's true that everybody is different, but that has a limit, we're all humans so in A LOT of things we're all the same. Would you judge yourself for what you think others might judge you? That's how i got better at it.
i think he already had one about that. the video about shyness
Stephen Colbert would be the perfect subject for a video about overcoming embarrassment.
I have that fear too, I hesitate sometimes. Something that helped me is this question.
How will the thing that happened affect my life in 1 year from now?
The answer is always the same - whatever happened - It doesn't matter
The key is to never judge yourself or others. Neither good nor bad.
you know what, I’m always gonna have a pack of gum on me incase everything goes south
but in all serious, this man is teaching me so much xx
So I can say to my friends "I had shoes from 88" and il make them laugh like crazy?

i think when you being silly too much people take advantage of you . don´t you think ?
thierry augustin it's not that you act silly all the time.
You are so analytical.
~ Glad you're loving it!
have white teeth, be tall and have a nice jaw line certainly help.

Hahah, brilliant.
A good hairline helps too.
Ellen isn’t tall at all
Not whining about shit that doesn't matter on the internet also helps
good body posture definitely helps

amy shumer needs this help
Amy is harsh and vulgar, not understated, but she definitely self-deprecates with her looks, drinking, promiscuity, etc. Both must be present!
God I think she sucks. Respect for her success, but I just don't dig her.
Amy Schumer's problem is not that she is offensive, it's that she isn't funny.
Compare her to Ricky Gervais or something
On a video about the importance of not making jokes that target people, you make a joke that targets people.

I love your videos and I'm totally addicted!
~ Glad to hear you're loving them :-)
you can make fake jokes and pretent to be a fake you so people like that fake persona, or you can be real and have less people like you but those people are genuine and like the genuine you
chooseaname30
agreeing with you on all these things except the "becoming more likeable" and "improving your humor" parts
There is a cheerful you in there and that's the one we love, can we have him back please?'
Being cheerful and happy when you dont actually feel happy is absolutely NOT being hypocritical or lying. Its driving yourself to where you want to be. If you are in a negative mood and are letting everyone know then you have chosen to be a victim and decided to punish everyone else for your own laziness.
Exactly! Waste time & energy being fake or have fun being real with genuine people

But she doesn't have a formula tho, that is not an act it comes from a great personality that is also funny, that is rare to find and really not worth faking, making jokes like that without having her consistent personality will make people question your honesty.
Fake it until you make it. People watching this can learn how to become more likable. Really worth faking, as most shit posted on this channel.
That is so hard to read without any "."...
Yeah, I worked for a woman who was dragon lady one, then brilliant the other. Her establishment is wildly successful and renowned in the region for its industry. She had a department manager who emulated all her dragon examples but he lacked brilliance. He was merely a douche copying someone who did things naturally.
He said nothing about copying her, all that was talked about was a few loose guidlines that the vast majority of people can follow.
I dunno man, where I'm from everyone roasts each other all day, it's a good time
But that's all in good fun, what he was talking about is kinda similar to bullying. When one person is being alienated.
u don't roast somebody you first met, especially a girl or somebody new to a group.
How do you know if he doesnt? I mean, look at his profile picture... XD

Nonastar525. Saaaaaame im lonely asf
Being lonely is said to be quite common nowadays,
anyway it indeed still sucks.
quick tip, just say hi to a stranger and treat them like a friend. so far people seem either ignore me or have a nice conversation with me, which usually leads to them having a nice view on me

MILAAAN16 same here. They all laugh so much. 😂
Ellen is really gifted with natural humour..
I respectfully disagree with only 55 percent of your statement.
This is hilarious to watch in retrospect.
This channel is a joke

Hello, I am a definitely human person who is looking for tips on interactions, as I find earth intriguing and must blend as a human, not that I need to, as I am very, very human. Scincerely,

Greetings Unit X23dd2 , this is Unit Zalpha563 reporting in. The key is to give them your gum.
This is beautiful
Just be ugly, everyone likes a person that makes themselves look better
I have done them all even before i realised i was "funny" and now i have a squad
So... People that text you first? I long for the day people would text me first.
You have to text first too sometimes before being texted at.
♞ Go Fuck Yourself ♞
Just saved this all to a notepad file.

You should learn to make jokes. Any joke should start with "a guy walks into a bar....."
Ellen is good at being sweet and funny. She is endearing.
She's the perfect example of normie comedy. Works well in social interactions for sure, but it's bland as vanilla for me.
There's a time and a place for dank memes. Her comedy is good enough.
Its real fun.
t. slav
thats quite the point, though. these are safe, gentle jokes that won't upset anyone.
Vanilla is the opposite of bland tho.
Awesome ! I like this 😊
Thanks!
Folks, Ellen is likeable. Even if she's not necessarily "haha" funny, there's no denying she's a fun person to be around.
Can you do a video about repairing broken relationships with co-workers, family, friends? How can a person get back to being more likable if they’ve made mistakes in the past? Said something in confidence that a person they’ve trusted by mistake has repeated or perhaps that someone has repeated something they’ve said out of context. Thanks for all you do I get a lot out of your videos.
