Thank you! Finally, someone who tells us what kind of steel it is. I've been searching quite a bit for the most suitable types of steel, but never managed to find real useful information.
I just finished with your video of forging the Hammer with thunder bear you are two of my favorite blacksmiths to watch thank you very much for sharing your learning experiences with us!
Honestly, you should have way more subscribers. I always enjoy your videos. You have the same video style as fz knives. Some people don't think their video is interesting unless you can see them run their mouth for ten minutes.

Thank you! I would love to have more viewers and subscribers. But the most important thing is to have fun making the videos and learning new and interesting things about the craft. equally fun is to share that experience with my viewers :)
Nils, very good video .. and you do a very good explanation at 11:06 about the air-hardening steel. Thanks for sharing, your channel is awesome . Cheers, Erik
I use unhardened c45 for my drifts, i have made somewhere between 50-70 axes on some of them, all in the Powerhammer without problems. Orvar supreme is however the absolute best steel i have used for hot work tools. If you ever visit Norway, look me up, so we can make some axes. 😊
Very informative! I am going to forge an drift myself in the near future now my hydraulic press is done, so very interesting to see how you did this. Is there a certain cross section you aim for or is it by eye?
Have you tried Flap wheels on your Angle Grinder they are very Aggressive I have used them on Hard Welded jobs but I have No experience of the steel you used, may be cheaper than Linishing Belts.
Very nice I have to make one for myself no chance that you sell these?? I want to make a few axes and a tomahawk for myself

Sorry I don't sell drifts. A tip is to figure out what size eyes you want in the axes. maybe if you have a supplier of handles you could make a drift that fits those handles etc.
Good job. To be honest I havent forge anything so far. Do you mind sharing some info about axe aye or drift geometry a bit. I didnt find on the net or yourube about it.

It depends what kind of drift you are making. I like it roughly 50mm long and 2mm wide when the drift is at the thickest part. I also like one end to be pointy and the other rounded. Since its tapered it creates kind of an gour glass shape inside of the eye of the axe
I was wondering if you have taken the wobble out of your power hammer yet? I am not at blacksmith but I have been a welder for 25 years and I believe it may greatly increase the efficiency of your hammer if you can stiffen it up a little bit. I am sure someone will make a silly comment about my comment but that is not!! What I meant.

Another great video Nils! I really appreciate your break downs.
Just what I was looking for! Thank you! Upcoming project now.
Thank you for watching :)

Vart i Norge håller du hus?
Kvam, Ca midt mellom Trondheim og Oslo langs e6.
Jag bor i Värmland, ganska nära gränsen till Norge, så det är nog bara några timmar
Excellent video as usual!
Great job!! 👍 looks amazing!!
Nice!
Thanks
Nice work Nils, I prepare to make also one piece.
nice Drift Nils
Just watched your axe video... Now looking up how to make a proper drift .lol
Absolutely awesome work mate!! Planning to forge my own axes rlly soon, and ur a big inspiration for myself! Cheers!
Thank you!

Neverland, I see you already explain it in the video!
I've got some huge leaf springs off of semis. I'm not sure what I'll use them for, but I've got about 400 pounds of them.
Have you tried Flap wheels on your Angle Grinder they are very Aggressive I have used them on Hard Welded jobs but I have No experience of the steel you used, may be cheaper than Linishing Belts.
I havent tried that! Thanks for the tip
could you make round and sqaure dies next to each other as one die or would the forces be to wide for that press?
Bearing steel or 52100 is also air hardening. But i dont know how is it compared to h13. But bearing steel could be easier to find.
Looks great Neil! The only issue I see is cooling the drifting between heats using water could be an issue
You cant use water, that can cause cracks. However you can use oil to cool it between heats, acording to my source
Nils Ögren if you don’t mind I’d love an update after 5 axes to see how it’s holding up
Säkert från samma lirare jag köpte min Orvar från för ca 3 år sedan… förnamn som börjar med R :)
I like your anvil sir, would that style of anvil still be manufactured these days. Is there a brand marked on it. You sir are certainly a craftsman
Tack. Så det finns inget behov av anlöpning med Orvar, är det inte sprött alls efter härdning?
Nej inte enligt mina källor

Good, bra, härlich! 🙂
So I understand. Could you have heated straightened and retempered the old drift? Is there an inherent problem w spring steel?
You answered most of this at the end!! Thanks
Love it :) tack så mycket

@ Thank you so much for the reply. You are doing amazing job. Hope I will do my own blacksmith workshop in the future.

I have not yet done that, but im planning to!
Glad to hear it I think that particular project me make quite a good video
Glömde fråga innan, du sa att du inte sålde Orvar drifts MEN
Säljer du den gamla driften? 😁
Leta upp en stor bladfjäder och gör en. Känns konstigt att sälja den gammla.
Do you make those drifts for sale
