  • So in this video i wanted to share the process of forging a bearded axe on my hydraulic press. I still need to learn alot when it comes to using the press, but at this time it has increased my forging speed alot. These axes will be available on my webshop, so stay tuned for the launch of the web store!
    Hope you enjoy the video!

I really enjoyed the video especially all the different dyes in your press in making your axe. Thanks for sharing and keep on forging.

Nils, beautiful work as always! Thank you for sharing. As I don't have a power hammer, I especially enjoy watching your hand forging. I noticed clouds of dust whilst you shaped your hickory handle. Hard to get a good fit with a dust mask or respirator with a beard, but perhaps worth trying or perhaps dust evacuation or even a cross breeze would help?Hopefully some protection whilst forging and grinding the steel. In my other life I'm an anesthesiologist. Abrasives from the belts, fumes, even wood dust can cause serious lung problems long term.

    •  3 года назад +2

Thank you for caring! Im going to order a new set of respirators today. Lazyness is a way i fall short. Its time to change that now!

"If you liked the video like the video!" This made me chuckle a bit ;) Nice axes you are making there.
Is the pressforging causing more stresses in the material or do they relieve in the next heat circle anyways?

    • @ThatOneBlacksmithGuy
      @ThatOneBlacksmithGuy 3 года назад +4

Any stress should be relieved by thermo cycling and tempering the axe at the end really

    •  3 года назад +4

Yes i "Normalize" the axe before quenching, to relieve the stress.

Tack!

    •  3 года назад +1

Tack för att du säger det. Är väl medveten om det och har det för det mesta. Men i ärlighetens namn så är det lathet som får mig att skita i det. Tog mig säkert 2 metallflisor i ögat innan jag började använda glasögon. Bättring Nils!

    Hi Nils
    Mycket trevlig yxa!
Just had an operation on my back so no forging for me for at least 6 weeks so watching everyone else until then!
Any plans to make a copy of the 10th century Gotland cross axe? I have one made in rough just before my operation but can't finish it until I'm fit again. Maybe a few hours of tidying and tinkering then it should look okay. Quite pleased with it considering it's my 1st attempt at that style of axe.
    All the best👍

    •  3 года назад +2

Thanks! Yeah that kind of axe would be awesome to make. Next one is going to be a special bearded axe, but after that the cross axe could be a fun project

@ Hi Nil's, It looks to me as if using the the lower part of the Axe head would put a large bending force on the join between the shaft and the head's socket?

Hei Nils - gjør du hel-metall, jeg ser ikke at du legger inn egg-stål? Hva slags stål bruker du da, og si - har du bygd hydraulikk-pressa selv?

    •  2 года назад

Jag gör både och. Vissa modeller är helstål andra är laminerade. Brukar använda ss2092 och c45. Pressen har jag byggt själv!
