There are several places in Germany called Goldberg, including a city in the north. And there have been and still are several germans with the family name Goldberg. It's just that outside of the german speaking area such names are usually taken for jewish names only. If you had said the same about the name Rosenberg, you would have regretted it quickly.

One of my great grandfathers, whom I still knew when I was little, since he was born in 1898, and died in 1986 when I was just yet a pre-schooler. He was wounded as a soldier in the First World War, hit by fragments of a grenade. He was a half-jew. (His father, a famous doctor back in the Austrian Empire, fell in love with a “shiksa”, a non-jew, became catholic, and married my respective great-great-grandmother.) Only after my maternal grandmother's death - his daughter - I learned that he also served in the Wehrmacht. Again: He was a half-jew. And I wish I could go back to my early childhood, to ask him about these times, and from my conversations with other Austrians of Jewish ancestry, I can assume that he, like most people of that origin, just kept his head down, and tried to be as dutiful a citizen as can be. … I got up from my keyboard to toast to him with some fine Himbeerschnaps. You said he served in the first World War. The German Army had nothing against Jews in the first World War, that was the Second World War. Anne Frank's father was a lieutenant in the German army in World War I. Where was your great-grandfather during World War II?
@@edsmith438 - that's the problem: Unknown. What I know is that he got drafted in both World wars, about the second one I only learned after my grandmother's death. And as we went through her belongings, a few things who were her father's still were there, most prominent a WW1 monocular (Carl Zeiss Vienna) with its serial number filed off (maybe somebody got it issued and … did not give it back) and things like that, but no documents. So it is sad to say that those details are lost to history. People tended to not talk about these dark times and even less keep the documents. “Actual, personal history” is unlike what you read about in the books.

Me too! I also love little-known (intentionally) stories from WWII and other times... I recommend you books of Thomas Dalton, PhD, and Veronica Kuznyar-Clark, they tell much more than Felton. Also search for "271,301 Red Cross", you will be very surprised. And to understand the opposite side, search for "Stalin's Enslavement of Rural Russia (full documentary)", and "sexual revolution in Weimar Germany in 1920s" and "Bolshevik sexual revolution in 1920s", and "extermination of Cossacks by Bolsheviks", and you will understand why at least 5,000,000 Slavs joined Germans in WWII. Real history was totally opposite from what modern schools tell to naive people. It was never about Germans or Germany, it was only about freedom from Marxism in all its ugly forms.

My great-grandmother was half Jewish, and because my great-grandfather married her, he got expelled from the Wehrmacht and sent to the Organisation Todt as a forced labourer to build bunkers on the French coastlines.
Both survived the war and settled down in Vienna

If I recall, Göring was state premier of Prussia before the administrative reorganisation from states into Gaue (a Gau is like a valley, but in this case more like a region), which was still a very large chunk of Germany after WWI, around 50% or so.

A mini-episode on Eduard Bloch, a Jewish doctor who treated the Hitler family, would be worthwhile. He was protected by Hitler himself after the Nazi annexation of Austria and was allowed to immigrate to America with no resistance. As Hitler put it: “Dr. Bloch is an Edeljude - a noble Jew. If all Jews were like him, there would be no Jewish question.”

The problem with history as a subject for a doctorate or academic subject is that you are largely rehashing and collating what other people have documented. You can't tell it like it was, because by very definition, you weren't there.
Whereas science, maths, and engineering are on the forefront of new and original work.

I'm actually surprised at how relatively "lax" the classification scheme was compared to what I thought it would be. You could be all the way up to half Jewish and still be accorded German citizenship???!!! I'd always assumed even a hint of Jewish ancestry anywhere in your family tree and you were pretty much done for.

@Chad Plow well its also too much history to cover when covering ww2 especially u.s history since the pacific theater was more or less the result of U.S-Japanese tension. And the European theater was helping out old friends. For the larg part we get the anti germans British version of event and Japan get a soft ball lesson becaue we feel bad for dropping the a bombs so we don't learn about their atrocities in China.
It also seems that it depends on who you know also. Connected mixed Germans might have gotten away with a lot more than just regular mixed Germans.

Love your videos, my grandfather said this happened in Germany but I didn't believe him that there were German Jews in the Nazis. My grandfather was born in Berlin and lived there till 1939 and he had said that he knew Jews who were high up in the Nazis.

Fun fact - Taiwanese were classified as white by the SA Apartheid government while Chinese were classified as non-white. Both are ethnically Han-Chinese. It was because the SA government had a close relationship with the ROC.
There are many non-Han in both Taiwan and China. The current president of Taiwan is Hakka.

Yeah the honorary Aryan clause was made specifically so that can be done. By the end of WW2 Germany employed a lot of non-Germans, because in war, manpower > principles. My step-uncles father was a Slav (Ukrainian) who willingly fought for the Third Reich since the communists killed most of his family, so life circumstances can really shape how someone views a conflict and lead to strange cases, such as a Slav fighting for the faction that wanted to Germanize Slavs, and eliminate those that refused.

Although a Finnish soldier, Salomon Altschuler (1913-2019) was one of the few publicly Jewish interpreters for a German officer.
Fortunately for him, in this alliance of convenience the Finns, unlike other states that were allied or occupied, didn't sell out their Jewish citizens, kudos to them for that, and fighting the damned Soviets so bravely.

To My knowledge 8 jews were deported out of Finland to Germany in 1942, but they were not citizens.
I am unaware how many of them died.
I do know that after this event The Finnish church and prominent politicians and Marshall Mannerheim were furious, and during the war Finland took in 500 jews, many of them were sent to Sweden under direct orders from Mannerheim to protect their lifes from potential German killing.
It really is weird that one of Hitlers most usefull allies, did not partake in exterminaton, nor facism.
Maybe it was because Finland stayed a Democracy during the whole war and never truly joined the axis.

Truer words were never spoken. Every nation in every era had a mixture of evil people AND good people. We'll never know how many German folks really opposed Hitler, because remember that he tolerated absolutely NO dissent, similar to the Communists. One Luftwaffe pilot said years later that he and others were scared to even make jokes about Hitler, Himmler and other Nazi officials for fear they would be arrested.

How many younger people today know that there were female service personnel in every branch during World War II and that they were such a huge success (and so popular) that they were made permanent after the war? Or that the first US civil rights act passed in 1957, not '64?

Very good observation. However, remember that in the jewish tradition you are jewish by matrilineal descent. Therefore if your father is jewish and your mother is not then within jewish tradition you're not. Most of these "jewish" soldiers where not even considered jewish by the jewish community.
Although the matrilineal line of desent is the most traditional way of differentiating Jews and non-Jews in the Jewish community it is not the only way. As a person who is half Lutheran/half Jewish, lacks the matrilineal line of desent, and was raised as a Jew I can state from both personal experience and many hours spent in Hebrew school that bloodlines are not the only way of recognizing a person as a member of the Jewish community. Most people would also probably be surprised to learn which Jews tend to adhere most closely to the part of the tradition that values the bloodlines. It isn't the Orthodox.

Yes, reform jews bend the rule concerning matrilineal descent but most observant jews and halachically speaking jews will not consider other rule beyond the proper way of conversion. This video makes things sound nicer than they were for half Jews. First off, a half Jew that practiced the Jewish religion would be sent to the concentration camps. Second, a half Jew that married a fully Jewish woman would also suffer the same fate. There were severe restrictions on what a half Jew (and to a lesser extent what a quarter Jew) could do for work. They were generally fine with them being cannon fodder, but if they came up for promotion their Jewish heritage would get them into trouble. So basically it was more half

The officer then departed saying, "Well, there's nothing I can do for you then."
It pained some of the Germans to kill Aryan looking Jews. The nazi head of Belarus wrote a letter to the government stating that while he had no problem killing all the eastern Jews, perhaps there could be exceptions made for German Jews as they were much more civilized and could be useful to the war effort. It sounds cynical but I forget what he wrote verbatim but it was along the lines of it was hard to kill people culturally so similar. I forget if any action was taken on his letter. While it is publicly believed that Hitler thought of Jews as inferior, that was more common among his underlings. He himself regarded them as a dangerous enemy and they had to be eliminated for that reason. He did make some rare exceptions, but almost only if they left the country.

@@henrikg1388 Possibly because the question was why you found it refreshing that an “English” historian addressed the topic - a question which you haven’t really answered, though you do sound a bit hot and bothered so could possibly benefit from a traditional English cold bath.
Milch's case reminded me of a more recent development. One state in India made a law that disbarred anyone from standing for local body elections if they had more than 2 children. One incumbent brought a sworn affidavit from his wife that their third child was actually not his but the result of an affair with his brother. It was both revoulting and amusing. He besmirched his wife as an adultress, his child as illegitimate, and himself as a cuckold, but somehow expected that conservative society would still vote him back again despite his disgrace
