Perhaps this is a controversial opinion - I understand that building codes and safety measures can significantly reduce risks, but they aren’t foolproof, even with modern advancements and knowledge. A series of concerns come to mind, including human error, unpredictable events, corruption, and loopholes. Apart from concerns of long-term building performance, there is no guarantee of life safety, especially if they are not strictly enforced. Furthermore, many architects and engineers feel confident that their designs can last thousands of years, but how is that ‘exactly’ known? While the reassurance is positive, it reminds me how nothing in the built environment is truly permanent.
Very nice point. Many factors influence the creation, adoption and application of codes as you suggested. The code is a minimum and some architects in the profession choose to meet the minimum and while others choose to go above and beyond the standards. Going above and beyond = more costs at the expense of the Client. The Architect hopes to maintain a balance to ensure they produce as safe a building per their standard of care while managing the budget of the Client, the safety of the public and their obligation to the Profession.
I totally agree that the building codes do not entirely guarantee safety. Architects can still alter their construction drawings even after they are approved by the city, which can be problematic. As unexpected problems in lead to compromise of safety, the code gets amended in the due process of trial and error; however, I believe that the loopholes in the code are essential to give architects breathing room for creativity in their design.
One of the most compelling parts was reading about how there was a rehaul of building codes, for greater earthquake-proofing, following the 1994 Northridge earthquake. My parents immigrated from Armenia in 1992 and were initially struggling to build a life in America. They lived in a very old apartment complex in Northridge and had their entire building almost completely collapse right in front of them, leaving them homeless for a considerable amount of time. This was also following the 1998 Spitak earthquake in Armenia, the largest earthquake in the history of the country, which they were also affected by. Some of us may not have lived through a life-threatening earthquake, but understanding the importance of proper code and safety measures should be the number one priority for all architects.
Thanks for sharing those personal experiences. The greater portion of older buildings in cities today would not be able to withstand a major earthquake like Spitak. That's why it's critical for young Architects to understand the rules for seismic design and incorporate these principles into their designs.
Watching through this video and learning and learning about the tragic events that ultimately led to the building codes we have today struck a chord with me because I did a term paper about how the Great 1906 San Francisco earthquake shaped how we build buildings today. At that time, most buildings were made of brick and mortar and while that proved to be fire resistant, it was not able to resist the lateral forces of an Earthquake. This unfortunately led to the destruction of many buildings in the area and loss of over 3000 lives. It is good to know however that since that tragedy building codes have evolved to mandate all new buildings to be more seismically stable.

One point that resonated with me is that as an architect that designs the building, we have to take that responsibility of knowing the codes and checking whether it passes certain test. With that being said I believe that communication with other profession is also important to help provide and take responsibility with how accessible it is for the public uses. With people that are involved in the industry we have to consider the things that are unexpected to further develop and improve our building codes worldwide.

Great point, 💡 anticipating all the unknowns is what astronaut Chris Hadfield talks about in his book about designing a rocket. You have to anticipate all the ways it can fail. As Architects, we do that by carefully monitoring our job plus coordinating the work of our consultants. That kind of communication is key as you point out!
1. The point about how most codes came about after a failure took place reinforced the necessity of making mock up models to test the structure before making the final product. 2. Another point that stood out to me is that as much as we might test how a building's structure might stand against natural/man made disaster, it's quite difficult to predict the multitude of contextual mishaps that might end up affecting the structure at once. Making it only possible to learn about such conditions is by first having to go through that failure. 3. It's very interesting to see codes develop from making sure worst case scenarios don't happen, to keeping the health and safety of everyone, and lastly, meeting requirements to make sure people of any level of ability or disability are treated with equity when accessing the structure.

Something that really stood out to me is the fact that the officials that are suppose too check buildings and structures aren't thorough. I understand that it would be our job to be very thorough and check every single detail but I find it very eye opening that officials only check the major things. Recently, in my structures class we talked about how a walkway collapsed in the Hyatt Regency in Kansas City in 1981 and it was because of a very small detail that everyone missed. It was only a small adjustment where there were two screws versus one continuous screw but it resulted in 114 people being killed. I feel like there should be a thorough checklist for officials too because it wouldn't hurt to be double checked or even triple.
That was a tragic event. Yes, a screw placed in the wrong place cause that entire bridge to collapse and killed many people. Think about how many opportunities there were to check this detail and yet it was missed.
I agree that, ideally, governmental construction code checks should be as thorough as possible, but am unsure whether that would be worth the budget needed to do so. Maybe if there was some sort of randomized, audit-like system that poses enough of a incentive for engineers to pay more attention to their own designs without so heavily inflating the time and cost of the inspectors?
I agree with your opinion that it is important to check as many details as possible because as you said the small details possibly could kill a lot of people. I think this happens because there are so many priority things to do other than checking the details, so it's the matter of deciding where we should pay more attention. AI can do a lot of things when it comes to designing, programming, and rendering so I think in the future we’ll be able to spend more time and effort checking details because AI can’t do that in the construction field

While watching the video it was really mind-opening to understand the responsibility of architects to take action and inspect the design in detail not just the major detail but the whole design. Communication with other architects or engineers is important so that everyone is involved in preventing tragic collapses in a building. The regulation of the codes is really necessary for the protection of people and updates of new material or new tragic events that can help prevent them from happening again.

At the end of the day, codes are designed for safety, saving lives, and accommodating to everyone's conditions, which at a base level has been the main goal for all types of structures and buildings since 1760 B.C. to now. Many points in this video brought light to me--the first would be that I've been pronouncing Hammurabi wrong this entire time. A more important thing that was sitting in the back of my mind was how detrimental natural disasters have been to cities without proper designs to uphold them, which reminds me of the saying "an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure". Building codes are so important today, as it may not be shown well but so often do building inspectors find things poorly secured or done in the cheapest way possible, putting the inhabitants in danger. With things like the small fire in Chicago that escalates into a city-wide fire, it is so important that buildings are regulated for their safety as catastrophe works in a domino effect.

I liked the emphasis on health and safety at the beginning of the video because we often think about codes as roadblocks for design, but really they are for keeping us safe and happy. I also enjoyed the middle of the video when you defined the different types of codes and how they are adopted from Federal, to State, to local levels. I currently work at a practice in anaheim and do plan check reviews so understanding the code has been an emphasis for me and the way you put it lays it out very nicely, its good to know that now I should be focusing on the Californa building code as it is likely more stringent and safer than the base IBC.

One thing that I found to be interesting was the relationship between federal and state codes. Seeing examples such as Florida for winds and California for earthquakes makes complete sense. It doesn't make sense to have strict earthquake laws in places where there are no earthquakes, and vise versa for hurricanes. It would be a waste of resources if that were the case. I'm beginning to notice the authority of these building codes as federal acts as the baseline, and states have the ability to add to it but not take away.

It's interesting to dive into the history as to why codes are very important. The fire of 1871 that destroyed Downtown Chicago created the "Great Rebuild" which has really sculpted the importance to how much the public safety relies high standard buildings beginning with the materials used. It is so interesting to see the history behind codes and how they extend back to the 1760s. I always assumed (as shown in this video) that codes were just done and added to satisfy the minimum requirement based on what we have learned from previous mistakes, it is very interesting to see how certain impactful situations can change our perception of safety. Coming into this class I believed, from hearing other architects, that codes were too strict, unnecessary, and annoying; however, just from diving into the first video, I am finding it super interesting and necessary to what we do as designers and professionals in this field. The IBC (International Building Codes) gets updated every three years and takes a state like California 1 more year later to update to the state's standards. The Great Fire of 1871 is an event I never learned about before, so seeing this particular fact was pretty interesting since I always wondered about fire spreads in massive cities like Chicago. Seeing the massive destruction that was caused by a simple bar fire is an insane domino effect to think about. This resonated with me dearly since when I was a child I would build a massive house in minecraft and tried adding a fireplace, which then spread too quickly and burned my house down.

Something that really stood out to me in the video was the ability to adapt model codes and how they can change depending on location. It's interesting to see that there can actually be changes made at all (as long as more stringent) considering there are so many factors that go into a building and its structure. It makes me wonder how difficult it would be to generate new codes or edits when there isn't a giant, apparent reason, such as a natural disaster or fatal accident. The process of developing new codes and testing new, or different structural codes is something I'm interested in learning more about. As stated in the video, we continue to learn more and more about building and how to build and I believe it would be interesting to see how codes are put to the test without an actual emergency.
I believe UCSD still has one of the largest shake tables, and they can test entire buildings for how things like lateral load resisting systems will interact in the event of an earthquake. Lots of ways to test for all kinds of code standards, but it gets to be very $$$$$.

Watching the video, I was first unaware of the fact that codes had originated a LONG time ago, starting with the Code of Hammurabai at around 1760 BC. As time went on, it was quite evident that building codes had to be formed and followed by architectures, builders, engineers, etc. The reasoning behind this was due to extreme natural disasters, such as the earthquakes that had occurred in California or the fires in Chicago, and previously poor building requirements. With this, I found it interesting to see how big the family of codes now is, and how until to this day, it is still being updated.
I think a point in the video that stood out to me was the establishment of the Federal Americans with Disabilities Act being passed in 1990, which in the grand scheme of things is very recent. Providing a minimum width and rise before requiring a landing and a maximum slope is not only a matter of accessibility, but one of safety as well. Which is why I am very surprised that it falls solely on the architect to make sure that the building follows both state and federal ADA compliance. This also does make me wonder about how ADA requirements varied from state to state, and what arguments could be made in favor of a lack of federal intervention.

I was a bit amazed by the fact that the Laws of Hammurabi was mentioned as the origin of building codes. I've taken art history, so when we discuss the Laws of Hammurabi, it's mainly about the relief on the stone that the laws are carved into. So it is interesting to talk about the Laws in a much different light. Especially when only a few laws are well-known, such as the law of punishment of receiving the same injury a person inflicted on someone else. Hence the phrase "An eye for eye" was coined.

A noticeable piece that runs throughout the video is the origin history and reasoning behind the codes today. For example, the origin of the earliest "code" has been traced back to the Hamurabi code where responsibility fell on the builder and other similar mentions in various religious text like the bible. Today, most of the code put into our system has been put in place from something that has happened. Wether it is the guradrail height regulation or the direction of a door swing, it all leads back to an event that caused that piece of code to be created. The most fascinating part was honestly the origin of codes, the code of Hammurabi by the King of Babylon, 1760 B.C. and how it has nothing to do with the construction component but more of the penalties of a bad building. I like how there is more evidence of these punishments other than the "codes" such as biblical writings about the consequences. The addition of building codes in the U.S. were added in the early 1900s and you can see how codes were getting developed with the result of fires and environmental damages like earthquakes but with this came new types of materials like clay for fires. The overall development of codes really surprised me, the development of the ICC in 2003, its huge family model codes, building codes and how safety is the first thing that comes to mind.

Though it came as an initial surprise, I appreciate just how far back you go chronologically in establishing the “origin” of codes, rooting the source of all contemporary building codes in something as revered and ancient as Babylonian, and even biblical, reference. Through this, it sets a precedent that even long before we established a more modern set of rules surrounding construction (or adopted many other facets of contemporary living for that matter), protection of the user was first and foremost the No.1 priority. Really sets the framework too for the further development of codes, as nearly all aspects are drafted in direct response to some kind of natural disaster or threat to the safety of the public. It almost contextualizes the history and reasoning behind codes in a “Three Little Pigs”-esque narrative that highlights the importance of their existence by showing that the lack of codes would result in repeated disaster-- and therefore a failure of protection.

I thought it was sort of ironic to include The Code of Hammurabi since we may call these set of codes "extreme" compared to present regulations/laws. Yet, during the renaissance, architects were often made to stand under their ceilings as the scaffolding was removed. That way they understood the severity of designing an improper ceiling/building since it would crush them if it fell. Often, newer codes don't require people to remodel their buildings to meet the new standard. But events like earthquakes caused a drastic enough change in codes that buildings did need to be remodeled to prevent any more loss of life. I wonder where the line is drawn between when a building absolutely needs to be remodeled and when codes can be ignored since it was already a pre-existing structure. What about historically protected buildings like churches?

A point that resonated with me in the video was how codes must be updated and reflect the way that our modern technologies and society evolves in order to properly protect people. We have set up a system such as the triannual code cycle to address such change. In regards to how things continue to change in our world, I wonder if the code cycle will have to be even shorter, or be completely re-evaluated in the future due to climate changes. It could be possible that states such as Florida will become more stringent than California due to having to adapt to more extreme weather conditions and so on.
That is an excellent point, codes have always been on a 3 year cycle but things could change in the future, who knows. If issues affecting our buildings need more immediate attention, local laws can always step in and provide ordinances to address specific local problems. Thanks for your thought provoking comment.
Before watching this video, I was not aware of the fact that in early civilizations, building codes and regulations were emphasized such as in the Code of Hammurabi. Although building codes across the world and in the US have only been around for 100 to 200 years, I have witnessed an exponential/rapid growth in the volumes and specifications due to human error that have caused buildings to collapse since codes emerged. One thought-provoking question for me is that given the increase in populations due to birth and immigration, etc. there will be more demand for building public facilities of all sorts, and given that advances in new technology requires building codes to update and ensure safety of occupants, will building codes have to update more rapidly in the future? Perhaps every year instead of every 3 years?
It's possible, we would definitely need more resources, maybe more focus groups and organizations doing intense reviews. In 3 years, you can collect more data otherwise every year, do you have enough data points to know whether areas updated/implemented in the previous cycle were effective? 🧐

Perhaps this is a controversial opinion - I understand that building codes and safety measures can significantly reduce risks, but they aren’t foolproof, even with modern advancements and knowledge. A series of concerns come to mind, including human error, unpredictable events, corruption, and loopholes. Apart from concerns of long-term building performance, there is no guarantee of life safety, especially if they are not strictly enforced. Furthermore, many architects and engineers feel confident that their designs can last thousands of years, but how is that ‘exactly’ known? While the reassurance is positive, it reminds me how nothing in the built environment is truly permanent.
Very nice point. Many factors influence the creation, adoption and application of codes as you suggested. The code is a minimum and some architects in the profession choose to meet the minimum and while others choose to go above and beyond the standards. Going above and beyond = more costs at the expense of the Client. The Architect hopes to maintain a balance to ensure they produce as safe a building per their standard of care while managing the budget of the Client, the safety of the public and their obligation to the Profession.
I totally agree that the building codes do not entirely guarantee safety. Architects can still alter their construction drawings even after they are approved by the city, which can be problematic. As unexpected problems in lead to compromise of safety, the code gets amended in the due process of trial and error; however, I believe that the loopholes in the code are essential to give architects breathing room for creativity in their design.
One of the most compelling parts was reading about how there was a rehaul of building codes, for greater earthquake-proofing, following the 1994 Northridge earthquake. My parents immigrated from Armenia in 1992 and were initially struggling to build a life in America. They lived in a very old apartment complex in Northridge and had their entire building almost completely collapse right in front of them, leaving them homeless for a considerable amount of time. This was also following the 1998 Spitak earthquake in Armenia, the largest earthquake in the history of the country, which they were also affected by. Some of us may not have lived through a life-threatening earthquake, but understanding the importance of proper code and safety measures should be the number one priority for all architects.
Thanks for sharing those personal experiences. The greater portion of older buildings in cities today would not be able to withstand a major earthquake like Spitak. That's why it's critical for young Architects to understand the rules for seismic design and incorporate these principles into their designs.
Watching through this video and learning and learning about the tragic events that ultimately led to the building codes we have today struck a chord with me because I did a term paper about how the Great 1906 San Francisco earthquake shaped how we build buildings today. At that time, most buildings were made of brick and mortar and while that proved to be fire resistant, it was not able to resist the lateral forces of an Earthquake. This unfortunately led to the destruction of many buildings in the area and loss of over 3000 lives. It is good to know however that since that tragedy building codes have evolved to mandate all new buildings to be more seismically stable.

One point that resonated with me is that as an architect that designs the building, we have to take that responsibility of knowing the codes and checking whether it passes certain test. With that being said I believe that communication with other profession is also important to help provide and take responsibility with how accessible it is for the public uses. With people that are involved in the industry we have to consider the things that are unexpected to further develop and improve our building codes worldwide.

Great point, 💡 anticipating all the unknowns is what astronaut Chris Hadfield talks about in his book about designing a rocket. You have to anticipate all the ways it can fail. As Architects, we do that by carefully monitoring our job plus coordinating the work of our consultants. That kind of communication is key as you point out!

Another point that stood out to me is that as much as we might test how a building's structure might stand against natural/man made disaster, it's quite difficult to predict the multitude of contextual mishaps that might end up affecting the structure at once. Making it only possible to learn about such conditions is by first having to go through that failure.
3. It's very interesting to see codes develop from making sure worst case scenarios don't happen, to keeping the health and safety of everyone, and lastly, meeting requirements to make sure people of any level of ability or disability are treated with equity when accessing the structure.

Something that really stood out to me is the fact that the officials that are suppose too check buildings and structures aren't thorough. I understand that it would be our job to be very thorough and check every single detail but I find it very eye opening that officials only check the major things. Recently, in my structures class we talked about how a walkway collapsed in the Hyatt Regency in Kansas City in 1981 and it was because of a very small detail that everyone missed. It was only a small adjustment where there were two screws versus one continuous screw but it resulted in 114 people being killed. I feel like there should be a thorough checklist for officials too because it wouldn't hurt to be double checked or even triple.
That was a tragic event. Yes, a screw placed in the wrong place cause that entire bridge to collapse and killed many people. Think about how many opportunities there were to check this detail and yet it was missed.
I agree that, ideally, governmental construction code checks should be as thorough as possible, but am unsure whether that would be worth the budget needed to do so. Maybe if there was some sort of randomized, audit-like system that poses enough of a incentive for engineers to pay more attention to their own designs without so heavily inflating the time and cost of the inspectors?
I agree with your opinion that it is important to check as many details as possible because as you said the small details possibly could kill a lot of people. I think this happens because there are so many priority things to do other than checking the details, so it's the matter of deciding where we should pay more attention. AI can do a lot of things when it comes to designing, programming, and rendering so I think in the future we’ll be able to spend more time and effort checking details because AI can’t do that in the construction field

What really stood out to me in this video was how universal and historical codes have been in society and in the world for generations. At the end of the day, codes are designed for safety, saving lives, and accommodating to everyone's conditions, which at a base level has been the main goal for all types of structures and buildings since 1760 B.C. to now. It might seem simple enough to comply to all codes and building requirements, but there is the possibility of human error or other forces that could be the difference between life or death, or a structure working/not working. Advancements in technology will improve the chances of mistakes happening, and the past events that lead to major changes in building construction will always be remembered so that history isn't repeated.

Many points in this video brought light to me--the first would be that I've been pronouncing Hammurabi wrong this entire time. A more important thing that was sitting in the back of my mind was how detrimental natural disasters have been to cities without proper designs to uphold them, which reminds me of the saying "an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure". Building codes are so important today, as it may not be shown well but so often do building inspectors find things poorly secured or done in the cheapest way possible, putting the inhabitants in danger. With things like the small fire in Chicago that escalates into a city-wide fire, it is so important that buildings are regulated for their safety as catastrophe works in a domino effect.

I liked the emphasis on health and safety at the beginning of the video because we often think about codes as roadblocks for design, but really they are for keeping us safe and happy. I also enjoyed the middle of the video when you defined the different types of codes and how they are adopted from Federal, to State, to local levels. I currently work at a practice in anaheim and do plan check reviews so understanding the code has been an emphasis for me and the way you put it lays it out very nicely, its good to know that now I should be focusing on the Californa building code as it is likely more stringent and safer than the base IBC.

One thing that I found to be interesting was the relationship between federal and state codes. Seeing examples such as Florida for winds and California for earthquakes makes complete sense. It doesn't make sense to have strict earthquake laws in places where there are no earthquakes, and vise versa for hurricanes. It would be a waste of resources if that were the case. I'm beginning to notice the authority of these building codes as federal acts as the baseline, and states have the ability to add to it but not take away.

It's interesting to dive into the history as to why codes are very important. The fire of 1871 that destroyed Downtown Chicago created the "Great Rebuild" which has really sculpted the importance to how much the public safety relies high standard buildings beginning with the materials used. As obvious at that sounds but really resonated with me because it was my first time hearing about this part of history which also filled in some lingering questions about the materials we use today. Materials are another fascinating topic but many times we see them and admire just their beauty such as terracotta clay. The vibrance that stands out but most importantly how it provides a fire resistance to the buildings as discovered during this era.

It is so interesting to see the history behind codes and how they extend back to the 1760s. I always assumed (as shown in this video) that codes were just done and added to satisfy the minimum requirement based on what we have learned from previous mistakes, it is very interesting to see how certain impactful situations can change our perception of safety. Coming into this class I believed, from hearing other architects, that codes were too strict, unnecessary, and annoying; however, just from diving into the first video, I am finding it super interesting and necessary to what we do as designers and professionals in this field. I learned that codes regulate public health, safety, and general welfare. The IBC (International Building Codes) gets updated every three years and takes a state like California 1 more year later to update to the state's standards. One thing I didn't know was that there are many systems and fields that regulate the implementation of codes.

The Great Fire of 1871 is an event I never learned about before, so seeing this particular fact was pretty interesting since I always wondered about fire spreads in massive cities like Chicago. Seeing the massive destruction that was caused by a simple bar fire is an insane domino effect to think about. This resonated with me dearly since when I was a child I would build a massive house in minecraft and tried adding a fireplace, which then spread too quickly and burned my house down.

Something that really stood out to me in the video was the ability to adapt model codes and how they can change depending on location. It's interesting to see that there can actually be changes made at all (as long as more stringent) considering there are so many factors that go into a building and its structure. It makes me wonder how difficult it would be to generate new codes or edits when there isn't a giant, apparent reason, such as a natural disaster or fatal accident. The process of developing new codes and testing new, or different structural codes is something I'm interested in learning more about. As stated in the video, we continue to learn more and more about building and how to build and I believe it would be interesting to see how codes are put to the test without an actual emergency.
I believe UCSD still has one of the largest shake tables, and they can test entire buildings for how things like lateral load resisting systems will interact in the event of an earthquake. Lots of ways to test for all kinds of code standards, but it gets to be very $$$$$.

Watching the video, I was first unaware of the fact that codes had originated a LONG time ago, starting with the Code of Hammurabai at around 1760 BC. As time went on, it was quite evident that building codes had to be formed and followed by architectures, builders, engineers, etc. The reasoning behind this was due to extreme natural disasters, such as the earthquakes that had occurred in California or the fires in Chicago, and previously poor building requirements. With this, I found it interesting to see how big the family of codes now is, and how until to this day, it is still being updated.
I think a point in the video that stood out to me was the establishment of the Federal Americans with Disabilities Act being passed in 1990, which in the grand scheme of things is very recent. Providing a minimum width and rise before requiring a landing and a maximum slope is not only a matter of accessibility, but one of safety as well. Which is why I am very surprised that it falls solely on the architect to make sure that the building follows both state and federal ADA compliance. This also does make me wonder about how ADA requirements varied from state to state, and what arguments could be made in favor of a lack of federal intervention.

I was a bit amazed by the fact that the Laws of Hammurabi was mentioned as the origin of building codes. I've taken art history, so when we discuss the Laws of Hammurabi, it's mainly about the relief on the stone that the laws are carved into. So it is interesting to talk about the Laws in a much different light. Especially when only a few laws are well-known, such as the law of punishment of receiving the same injury a person inflicted on someone else. Hence the phrase "An eye for eye" was coined.

A noticeable piece that runs throughout the video is the origin history and reasoning behind the codes today. For example, the origin of the earliest "code" has been traced back to the Hamurabi code where responsibility fell on the builder and other similar mentions in various religious text like the bible. Today, most of the code put into our system has been put in place from something that has happened. Wether it is the guradrail height regulation or the direction of a door swing, it all leads back to an event that caused that piece of code to be created. It nearly all has a very specific reason and origin for being in the code regulations.

Comparing the codes we had back then in 1760 B.C. to the codes in modern times is a huge change. As for architecture, you will learn more about structural builds, such as how to resist fire, earthquakes, or hurricanes, and how to make buildings stronger. The only way that keeps them stronger is to see how they fail first. Codes are very important and help keep the public healthy and safe from any destruction that could occur. To keep a good reminder about codes is the code counsel ICC, it changes every 3 years but keeps a good understanding of the different building codes.

The most fascinating part was honestly the origin of codes, the code of Hammurabi by the King of Babylon, 1760 B.C. and how it has nothing to do with the construction component but more of the penalties of a bad building. I like how there is more evidence of these punishments other than the "codes" such as biblical writings about the consequences. The addition of building codes in the U.S. were added in the early 1900s and you can see how codes were getting developed with the result of fires and environmental damages like earthquakes but with this came new types of materials like clay for fires. The overall development of codes really surprised me, the development of the ICC in 2003, its huge family model codes, building codes and how safety is the first thing that comes to mind.

Though it came as an initial surprise, I appreciate just how far back you go chronologically in establishing the “origin” of codes, rooting the source of all contemporary building codes in something as revered and ancient as Babylonian, and even biblical, reference. Through this, it sets a precedent that even long before we established a more modern set of rules surrounding construction (or adopted many other facets of contemporary living for that matter), protection of the user was first and foremost the No.1 priority. Really sets the framework too for the further development of codes, as nearly all aspects are drafted in direct response to some kind of natural disaster or threat to the safety of the public. It almost contextualizes the history and reasoning behind codes in a “Three Little Pigs”-esque narrative that highlights the importance of their existence by showing that the lack of codes would result in repeated disaster-- and therefore a failure of protection.

I thought it was sort of ironic to include The Code of Hammurabi since we may call these set of codes "extreme" compared to present regulations/laws. Yet, during the renaissance, architects were often made to stand under their ceilings as the scaffolding was removed. That way they understood the severity of designing an improper ceiling/building since it would crush them if it fell. Often, newer codes don't require people to remodel their buildings to meet the new standard. But events like earthquakes caused a drastic enough change in codes that buildings did need to be remodeled to prevent any more loss of life. I wonder where the line is drawn between when a building absolutely needs to be remodeled and when codes can be ignored since it was already a pre-existing structure. What about historically protected buildings like churches?

A point that resonated with me in the video was how codes must be updated and reflect the way that our modern technologies and society evolves in order to properly protect people. We have set up a system such as the triannual code cycle to address such change. In regards to how things continue to change in our world, I wonder if the code cycle will have to be even shorter, or be completely re-evaluated in the future due to climate changes. It could be possible that states such as Florida will become more stringent than California due to having to adapt to more extreme weather conditions and so on.
That is an excellent point, codes have always been on a 3 year cycle but things could change in the future, who knows. If issues affecting our buildings need more immediate attention, local laws can always step in and provide ordinances to address specific local problems. Thanks for your thought provoking comment.
Before watching this video, I was not aware of the fact that in early civilizations, building codes and regulations were emphasized such as in the Code of Hammurabi. Although building codes across the world and in the US have only been around for 100 to 200 years, I have witnessed an exponential/rapid growth in the volumes and specifications due to human error that have caused buildings to collapse since codes emerged. One thought-provoking question for me is that given the increase in populations due to birth and immigration, etc. there will be more demand for building public facilities of all sorts, and given that advances in new technology requires building codes to update and ensure safety of occupants, will building codes have to update more rapidly in the future? Perhaps every year instead of every 3 years?
It's possible, we would definitely need more resources, maybe more focus groups and organizations doing intense reviews. In 3 years, you can collect more data otherwise every year, do you have enough data points to know whether areas updated/implemented in the previous cycle were effective? 🧐
