Thanks, and welcome! Glad you're here! There are lots of tutorials out there on how to use soap calc, and I would really recommend that before soaping. That way you can customize each recipe to fit what ever size mold you have... I use approx 5% super fat or sometimes a touch more😉
Last I heard, or tried, Soap calc will not convert her recipe to your mold. It probably will tell you the percentage and ounces of each oil but it will not make the recipe fit your mold which could waste alot of oil. To do that you either have to know how much oil your mold will hold and then know how to convert or have a lye calculator that does it for you. Look on Etsy.
I have added tussah silk in 2 different soaps I've made.I do not like the smell of it at all and unless I use a really strong fragrance I can still smell it. Do you notice that with the silk you use?
Do you have a soap recipe that would be safe/good for newborns, babies and toddlers? We seem to be having our own population explosion in my family. Five quarantine babies due later this year.......lolol
What a blessing! I love babies!!! Cold process soap is a very gentle pH for the skin, but it stings the eyes... So when I use it for babies I always use a wash cloth and am very careful around the face area. As far as a baby soap, the basic recipe is super gentle, and if you leave it unscented it would be even more so. I did make a breastmilk soap for my daughter (using her own milk) and she loved it...
Wow I would never have thought of using breast milk. It does have a high fat content I believe, so would be good in soap probably. I have not made soap yet just watching and learning everything I can. Thank you.
Speaking of tightening wire; Do you know why the 'San Fransisco gate bridge keeps maintenance and maintains tightening on its wires and/or cables? So the wire wont break and make the bridge fall down! Wire is not actually good to tighten and loosen continuously. It will eventually break. In fact, it could actually even break being looped in a circle without any tension. A wires main strength is maintaining its tightness. It doesnt actually bend very well which is the same as tightening and loosening. So when they tell you that it is better to tighten and loosen wire that is the same as telling engineers to tighten and loosen wire on bridges! Yikes! Nice soap! To get mine to 5 oz I just weigh the entire slab (Not really, my self made lye calculator actually tells me the weight and cost of each bar when I design my recipe) then I measure the width of the slab or loaf and divide to get the amount of bars and then just measure accordingly. But since my lye calculator already does it all all I really have to do is just measure from the wire to the fence or stop block. Would you ever be interested in trying a new style loaf cutter that changes height in about 45 seconds (without the aid of a ruler or pliers). That leaves you free to buy different sized molds without sweating changing the height. This one cuts melt and pour. Does that one cut melt and pour also?
@@EllenRuthSoap Your welcome. I have been making a new kind of soap cutter for soapers (and me) because I was unsatisfied with mine in changing height. Very inconvenient for adjusting to different size molds. In thinking about the new design I studied wire strength and a little about the science behind it. I’m using the tall triple skinny. And I talk about the weight in the video 😉
@@EllenRuthSoap yes, right after I sent the comment you spoke about it. 🙂 Thank you for responding.
Did you add sodium lactate? I didn’t see where this was added. When would you add this to the recipe? Thank you.
I didn't add sodium lactate to this batch, just forgot to put it in there.... When I do add it, I put it in the cooled lye solution 😉
Ellen Ruth Soap Great! Thank you!
Is it possible to make melt and pour milk soap?
I've never done that...
me gustaría saber en qué parte puedo conseguir la receta. gracias
I don't share this particular recipe.
Why do you use caolin clay in all your soaps?
I really like how it makes the lather feel, it gives it a smooth feel.
Thanks😘
Can you use store bought goats milk?
Yes💕 you sure can!
If I was to buy it from amazon which one would you recommend?
Which one what? I'm not sure what your asking?
Do you use old fashion oats on the top of the bars?
Yes, they are organic old fashioned oats😉
@@EllenRuthSoap thank you for clarifying! I was guessing Quick Oats would "cook" during saponification 😊
Can I use the liquid goat milk ??
You can, you'll just need to add the lye very very slowly... I would suggest having it chilled or like a slushy..
Thank you.
I held my breath the whole time you were cutting 😂
Where do u get goat milk from?
We have a small organically raised flock, and when they're dry we have friends with dairy goats too😉
I've used corn silk. Does nothing to the soap
Good to know, I've never tried corn silk..
What oils do you use in the recipe?
I don't share this particular recipe
what happens if you come back to your soap when it is in the mold, and notice it is cracking?
@@elkcreekacresllc6416 that's usually a sign of over heating. I'd put it in the fridge at that point
@@EllenRuthSoap Thank you!!
That actually makes a lot of sense, about the wire tightening vs keeping it tight. Thank you for sharing!
@@EllenRuthSoap
Your welcome. I have been making a new kind of soap cutter for soapers (and me) because I was unsatisfied with mine in changing height. Very inconvenient for adjusting to different size molds. In thinking about the new design I studied wire strength and a little about the science behind it. I've got it down pat and even have a couple of 5 star reviews.
You didn’t tell us the measurements of each ingredient
It's in the description box. It's in percentage form, so you can make what ever size batch you need...
Hi Ellen l like your tutorial l like to know if you have a book a beginner like me can buy and refer to , the online can be a bit fast pace for older generation. Thanks
Bramble berry has some tutorials and recommended soap books
No gloves when cutting?
No, I usually don't need them for the cutting phase because the soap is fully saponified, and the pH is fine at that point.
Worms are insect not animal
Yes, but strict vegans won't use their products... They won't use bee products either, like honey or beeswax...
How come she keeps saying measurements but doesn't actually provide any measurements
Because I'm showing the process of how I do it, but not sharing the recipe in this video. I do have several other videos with great recipes: ruclips.net/video/SO5n4uWEVO0/видео.html
@@EllenRuthSoap oh thank you so much for replying..
Dear Ellen, I love your soaps, but I shudder with fear as I watch you work without gloves, or with bare ankles. Be careful, please. And if you can tell me how wide your soaps are in cm, 5 or 6cm. Best regards and all the best!
Thanks for your concern, that's sweet 😘
Where did you get the temperature scanner?
Amazon, there's a link in the description box.
Hi Ellen, I love to watch your videos ❤. They inspired me to make my own 🙌, I just bought your guiness beer soap!
I was wondering why you use Kaolin Clay and oats in most of your recipies?
Thanks! I really love how the kaolin makes the lather feel, and the oats are so skin soothing... I do leave oats out of some of my soaps because I have a friend with oat allergies😉
ellen i love your videos. most people go so fast and dont show the camera long enough or close enough. you are a great teacher. your children were fortunate to have a great teacher.
Thank you so much!
Thank you so much for going over your process so in depth!

Mam i use frozen goat milk and add NaOH.....and keep this lye solution overnight .....but my solution become thick paste ......is it save to use.....? Kindly reply me
I've not had that issue, so I'm not sure?? If your numbers are correct, it should be fine.
I just LOVE watching your videos. You definitely inspired me to make my own! What size mold do you have?
Thanks! It's the tall triple skinny from Workshop Heritage
