    ------------------------
    Determining the "riskiest" cities for earthquakes involves complex analyses conducted by experts in seismology and disaster management. These assessments are typically based on factors such as historical seismic activity, fault lines, building codes, population density, and infrastructure resilience. The order presented in this video is relative and represents my subjective opinion on this matter.
    It's crucial to consult official sources and experts in the field for the most accurate and up-to-date information on earthquake risk. Organizations such as the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA), and local governmental agencies in earthquake-prone regions often provide valuable resources and information on seismic hazards.

    I live in Santa Monica California (Los Angeles County) used to live in San Francisco. My house is new and built to current earthquake codes for California and the office I work in has been retrofitted to current California earthquake codes. I have a storm shelter with a month’s worth of food and supplies in the case of an actual earthquake emergency.

    Although I'm in Quito, Ecuador right now, I live 2 hours from here. The 2016 event wasn't located in Quito or anywhere near here. It was located in the coast of Ecuador, in Pedernales. It was a 7.8 event, it was felt in Quito, but didn't cause as much destruction as in the coast.

    There is an Honorable Mention for Panama: in 1882, there was an earthquake ranging from 7.7 to 8.1, and cities of Guna Yala, Portobelo and Colon would receive the first strike if the earthquake happens again in the same exact place in 1882.

    Don't miss Izmir, Turkey. It is a city with a population of 4.5 million today, which has had its share of devastating earthquakes throughout history. In 2020, a 7.0 magnitude earthquake hits from 70 km away and buildings were destroyed. Likewise, there are 12 more fault lines around the city that can produce earthquakes of up to 7.2 magnitude.

    Whatever metric was used to calculate the risk to Japanese cities seems to be very... skewed. Osaka and Kobe are at way greater risk than Tokyo due to the Nankai Trough. I strongly advise that you look into it, I think you'll be very interested, but here's a quick rundown that I can offer as a Kansai resident living on the Nankai fault line:
    - the Nankai Trough has colossal megathrust earthquakes at somewhat regular intervals of roughly 30 years.
    - It's currently overdue, with the last Nankai megathrust event being the 1946 Nankaidou event.
    - The estimated likelihood of a 9.0 magnitude earthquake striking within the next 15 years is 85%.
    - The death toll, even despite the incredible preparation efforts, is estimated hit around 280,000. As massive as that is, it was previously even higher before further measures were taken to prepare.

    • @Shna_na
      @Shna_na 2 месяца назад +1

      Some cities at particularly high risk from a Nankai megathrust event other than Kobe and Osaka are: Nagoya, Nara, Shizuoka, Hamamatsu, Wakayama, Tsu, Takamatsu, and Tokushima (among others)

    • @Shna_na
      @Shna_na 2 месяца назад +1

      @@dami_kun3chiri As do I, and I agree that we have, but this is about the potential for an earthquake on a catastrophic scale. Tokyo has very high risk of course, but it feels inaccurate to place it above Nankai on a list like this. Government projections are that *when*, and not *if*, the next Nankai megathrust earthquake event happens, the death toll will be around 280,000. And that's taking into account all the measures to reduce fatalities that have been implemented

    Some Entries are debatable and especially some mentions of "major Earthquakes", Islamabad wasn´t struck in 2019 and we can barely/can´t call Osaka 2018 major, as well as Bogota 2023 and some other entries.
    Also the Threat of San Diego for example might be higher. USGS at least has Scenarios for M7-7.5 Quakes on Faults in Greater San Diego.
    Certainly surprised to see Adelaide in there but not Cities with over 1 Million Inhabitants like Gaziantep, Sendai or Tabriz. In generel i wonder on what that Ranking is based.

    • @KyleTalcott-os4wz

      San Diego is not located near the major faults so that's why the risk is lower than LA or SF

    • @lukasrentz3238
      @lukasrentz3238 2 месяца назад

      @@KyleTalcott-os4wz Thats not what i meant. There are Faults capable for M7.5 nearby San Diego. Lower than LA or SF for sure, but 7.5 is more than the claimed 6.5

    • @KyleTalcott-os4wz
      @KyleTalcott-os4wz 2 месяца назад

      I don't really think there are known faults in the area capable of generating the BIG one ... a 7.5 earthquake. You will likely still have to rely on SAF for a quake that large or Hayward or Cascadia. I don't know if a 7.5 is possible in San Diego though. I think the threat of a 7.5 is very low in SD, possible but very unlikely.

    • @KyleTalcott-os4wz
