- As an ambassador for Langham Hospitality Group, Lang Lang hosted the Piano Master Class event in Hong Kong on August 2011. The event was a celebration of classical piano music where talented students were inspired by Lang Lang's encouraging critique.
11 year-old Thomas Chan 陳浩彥 won the Gold Award in the National Youth Piano competition last year.
I don't know why people are criticizing his mistakes (the boy) - it is after all a "class" not an actual performance. I think he did a fantastic job and he will be a great pianist if he keeps it up. To all those who are quick to judge and criticize, what Masterpiece did YOU play at 11 years of age?
Carmen CES Nice,I waiting your comment as long .This show the manners of western people and eastern people. They just like criticizing someone doing the mistake ,maybe including his parents like mine .They doesn't know what is art of music ,they come here not enjoy the music ,they just want to see the pro boy .
Carmen CES Well said. "People who live in glass house should not cast stones."
Exactly! It is a class! If you critisise someone who is practising and isn’t actualy performing, it makes you an asshole.
I believe it was due to his short or small hand and weaker muscle are what causing such mistake and not on his.
If there is no correction there is no progress. The master is doing the little chap great favor. These mistakes can only be heard by master abd not the ordinary.
Lang Lang as always Very kind, Very polite, Very sweet....GREAT pianist! Respect!
myron kotaishi Sure I like Lang Lang too.He is no.1 in my heart ,his the artist ,he is the pianist .He is wonderful.
@@小康-q8v Your grammar is terrible
Fat Boi Thanks to correct my grammar which I commends on this video when I was young .
@@小康-q8v I didn't correct it, you corrected on your own, so good job! but your sentences still don't make sense.
Fat Boi lmfao
I admire how confident and relaxed Lang Lang is. Even him flipping the score page is stylish and in beat. 2:09
Lang Lang very patient here, knowing the kids level and adjusting the masterclass to it while trying to enthusiast and relaxing the kid to keep on performing and not to be too nervous.
zakuzen You wrong ,music should playing relaxing .This song is relaxing ,don't push too much .Lang Lang is telling the truth for how playing the score clearly .
Grammar check.
I could watch Lang Lang’s masterclasses, all day, it is so valuable to students and me!
Shirley Hare me too!
I admire the artist, but I get to admire even more the great dedicated teacher. That's when you really show your true greatness, dear Lang Lang.
At age 11 I was a great Super Nintendo player.
I wanted a pet Digimon at that age
My 10 year old kicks ass at Fortnite
And i played clash of clans (still do)
I was very good at building Minecraft houses
I play robux
Lang Lang is such a good teacher and always so encouraging to the young students.
Wow how one single class changed this boy career!!! Amazing!
Kudos to Lang Lang’s parents for their role in raising such an wonderful human being.
lol, yeah kudos for driving your kid to the brink of suicide. You cannot seriously say that the parenting of Lang Lang has been healthy
Floris Ende WOW. I was totally ignorant of that, sorry. Apparently he developed wonderful qualities in spite of his parents-or perhaps there were other aspects of their parenting which were positive.
@@FatherTau glad to be of help! Yes, Lang Lang turned out fine but I'm sure his childhood has been traumatical
I know it sounds terrible but perhaps his father knows that's the only way to get the best out of him.
@@florisende8015 is there a source documenting his unhappy childhood or are you just assuming that all virtuoso pianists are the product of tiger parenting
Just because LangLang isnt a tchaikovsky specialist doesnt mean he cant teach tchaikovsky. Hes plenty good enough.
Was very reluctant to chime in, but kudos to Lang Lang for having just the right touch in every respect. He gave very kind guidance, culminating in "don't kill yourself." It was such an honest and gentle way of saying that Thomas should grown into this piece, it's a little bit beyond his grasp right now. But he was completely encouraging, and above all supportive, while telling the boy he should focus on practicing with love, not to be a keyboard gladiator, which will only backfire. Just the right "touch."
Btw, beautiful playing from Lang Lang on thd orchestra part, clearly showing his years of experience (probably a hundred performances) of this piece. What I enjoyed most about it was the freshness he played it with: clearly knows the music inside out, but this was an opportunity to be "on thd other end," and he brought out the nuances as only someone with that experience could, even more than a conductor who can only convey the interpetation through other musicians. Here you had the orchestra part refined to its purests essence that an actial orchestra would dilute. So I'm rather in agreemebt with those finding this strangely nicer than a real orchestra. This also of course made it more intimate, less bombastic than a 60 piece orchestra.
So much to appreciate in this, but most of all Lang lang's gentle supportiveness and genuine caring towards a very accomplished pupil who must take care that ambition (his own or perhsps his parents') doesn't become counterproductive. "Don't break your hands." "Don't kill yourself." Seems to me those are wise, and truly caring, words.
Lang Lang is a wonderful teacher and role model. Meanwhile, that kid's a very bright muscian--a quick study who immediately understood the coaching he was receiving in phrasing and articulation. Beautiful to watch this.
What a kind and generous man is Lang Lang. His passion and enthusiasm to help this kid shows great admiration for the young and upcoming young lad. Even I learnt a thing or two. Good on you Lang Lang . Great masterclass which had me spellbound.
What a load of nonsence. He plays it well and it IS his level. He has massive hands and "Power" as you call it is weight and not force. You don't need muscles....
Absolutely LOVE and ADMIRE Lang Lang !!! He makes this music come alive! Lots and lots and lots of love!!!
nice teacher, lang lang. I like his outreach to the younger gen. kind person, I guess.
that steinway sounds absolutely beautiful and the kid is doing that amazing piano justice
Absolutely love this kids talent at such a young age, and absolutely love Lang Lang
The boy is very talented... it was a pleasure to listen to this class...
I've already played for 40 hours today, but this inspires me to play even more!
Wonderful. And thank you Lang Lang for your contribution to young people everywhere..of course I am always enjoying your beautiful music mastery. Thank you. DeeKing USA
Thomas is a very talented boy and Lang Lang an excellent piano professor.
11 years old and already playing the tchaikovsky concerto! Amazing! I am trying to learn this now and i must say, he must be so proud of his efforts and the way he executes the music.
nothing amazing here. you are shocked by the fact itself? it's nonsense.
@@vaxx2007 what are you trying to say
@@roi_k I see I tell to the opponent, there is nothing amazing of playing Tchaikovsky concerto. amazing would be if you play amazingly, but this boy at the video doesn't
@@vaxx2007 He's still learning, and besides the fact he's able to play that piece is already good enough. Yes there is some problems, but he's still learning and doing quite good.
@@e.ashton so good enough, or amazing?
you say very very obvious things, I don't have a thing to add. but then you forget what I said before, and what I did not like in opponent's review.
朗朗真的厉害!!!在立式琴上就弹出了整个乐队的声音
朗朗has a great sense of humor and he always shows that in these classes with students.
Lang Lang is so kind. He visit this gifted young child man just by himself. I like their moving gesture.
Lang Lang does a fine job offering constructive suggestions to this talented lad. Correcting his overuse of the pedal will be the defining moment for his playing to make a quantum leap.
What a brilliant man and inspiring teacher Mr Lang Lang is
oh to have had Lang Lang as my teacher when I was 11!! Wonderful to see him bring out the best from this already magnificent young pianist .
Thomas proves he is a very good student , quickly applying direct and worthy criticism. It’s a class, Lang Lang is the master- Thomas improved his “sound” technique instantly- thanks for the upload.
another young genius - so wonderful to hear and watch how Langlang teaches. All awesome.
He truly has an amazing teaching style. so great at inspiring his pupils!
I could learn a lot from Lang Lang’s teaching video. Thank you for sharing!
I'm not even going to read the comments but I already imagine people strongly opposing against this kid. To be honest I'm never too amazed by prodigies and I'm quite sceptic when I read about them but this kid was indeed quite good. I wasn't expecting an excellent performance but the kid delivered something, he wasn't perfect made few mistakes. The interpretation wasn't always great but reasonably enough, a 11 years old doesn't have too much to give, he's literally not old enough. The point is, for his age this is amazing.
For any age this is amazing.
kendalljazz
Calm down. You expect some feeling from someone who's 20 or more.
Oh yeah, I almost forgot how terrible music industry is these days, maybe this kid really is better than some "talented" adults.
What a confident young man.
Love Lang Lang doing this
I love how when the kid started having memory slips near the end lang lang noticed and gave him the music.
This kid is 11 and plays Tchaikovsky's 1st piano concerto, I'm 16 and I'm struggling to play Glassy Sky....
banaantjexx164 glassy sky, if you meant by animenz then its not that hard. I'm 17 and I'm struggling with his unravel. That has notes that are hard to hit.
Well we all have to start some were, I am 16 and I’m learning Chopin’s nocturne in C# minor op posth and working my way up to complex Chopin, Liszt, and this piece.
Ok you are shockingly similar to me. I’ve been wanting to play that for so long, but I’m not at that level yet.
@@firstbourne8799 its probably a little late now, but you can start by playing some easier pieces that animenz transcribed, for example aLIEz.
Also it always depends on how deep you analyse the music. Just playing the notes with kind of the right volume is quite easy compared to a deep analysis of the details, rhythm, different melodies, etc.
I'm 16 and struggling to learn moonlight 3rd mvt...
Thomas a very clever boy. He absorbs Lang Lang's instructions really fast.
I agree. He improved so much
“Play always as if in the presence of a master.” ― Yan Ayrton
Bravissimo Thomas Chan ! This is the ethernal magic from Music - solidarity, superior Beauty and excellence don't matters the limits from age.A perfect duo example, in a unique, sensible and definitive performance for the Universe. The others not-humans intelligences are receptive for this kind of man (by a child) brilliant transcendence and communion. ARS SEMPER.VITA PLENA. Very sincerely , the young&old classical composer Yan Ayrton
Whilst I absolutely abhorred Lang Lang as an artist, I adore what he does for the classical repertoire by bringing it to the masses as well as his work with the youth.
Abbhorr ed but no longer....we are so relieved.........2nd violinist
Lang LAng is such a great teacher. Good job Thomas. We're always impressed seeing the challenges you tackle. In a few years, this piece will be fit you perfectly and everything else will seem easy!
This quietly young boy is brilliant and has a wonderful future. It’s interesting to watch Lang Lang the master pick up those free areas which needed more attention. I’m a piano examiner and see this all the time. It’s important to practice slow and carefully and to get everything right and not blur with the pedal .
I am inspired by the music langlang play and he is a respectful and polite pionist
you can take pictures before the performance but not during the performance,it's courtesy.
Me too, as DRQ DRN - absolutly love to Lang Lang!!! Lots of love and light!!!! God bless you!
Fantastic Lang Lang. Be blessing for others. So proud to see this video. Here I support your channel my friend. Greeting from California.
Thomas Chan should be 21 by now.................Best wishes to him on Christmas.............Dec.24th 2021 ❤❤❤
The problem with perfection is that it makes us think art is easy. It is not. Thanks Lang and Thomas to reminds us, to show us that to attain perfection is such a "lang lang" road.
Amazing! eleven years old.And ...if Tchaikovsky was listen to this ?? ...Thank you ...this video.
Everyone know Lang Lang is master, but young can win in the future International Fryderyk Chopin Piano Competition. Congratulations from Poland, homeland of Chopin for Thomas Chan.
him at 11 : *plays with Lang Lang*
me at 11 : *cries in a masterclass*
Lang Lang playing on a upright!?!?!?!?! :O
cuevaspedrocarrillo, yeah and one that sounds bl**dy awful too. Not his fault, obviously, but that upright really is horrible.
Upright grand good enough lor
Indeed! It reflects very bad on the sponsor of the event. They didn’t have another grand piano to put side by side? What a shame!
ai, meu DEUSSSS!!! EU AMOOOOO ISSOOO!!! Ele é um gênio da música! E tocando Concerto N 1 de Tchaikovsky é pra me matar de vez... ♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡
My favorite concerto. This young man is doing great. He has a wonderful teacher. Yang Yang

Ce înseamnă să ai un mentor ca megastarul LANG LANG !
🎶Lang Lang fantastico in ogni momento.... Persona meravigliosa 🎶
Totally !
I am totally Amazed by the kid braveness .
and I WISH he could teach me as well
Does anyone see, how Lang Lang tries to stop the crowd at 3:30 from making photos? This flash is so anoying when you play an instrument.
Lang Lang is a gift to us all
Lang lang is so cute kind and respectful to young pianists
Lang Lang has a beautiful smile and always looks great.
When I saw this video last year I was 11 and I was barely learning to play piano and I got inspired and now I can perfectly play Tchaikovsky at age 12
Legit
Gracias.
I know this might be wrong. But I prefer double piano than a complete concert symphonie ^_^
Yes!
Avec un professeur coment ne pas évoluer ?Tu es un immense pianiste ét plein d'humour THANKS.😊
Lang Lang is made of music! Is music in himself!
Love u Lang Lang Sweety polite pianist
Amazing performance for 11 year old.
Fun and fresh , a wonderful song for an opening, really.
11 year old playing Tchaikovsky 1? Wow!!!
omg that‘s impressive, both Lang Lang and Thomas
Wonderful lesson by a maestro to an extremely talented youngster. I think he gets his points across expressively and the lad improves each time he intervenes. My goodness it's hard to play!
Well..... I’m speechless, Lang Lang can stretch a twelfth so can Thomas
I can’t even stretch a perfect tenth
Everyone has his own favorite players. If you don't like this video, nobody is asking you to watch it. Come on, give Thomas Chan a break. After all, he is only 11 years old. For those who are casting negative comments on his playing, could you have played or have you attempted to play this difficult piece? Lang Lang admitted he did not play this piece until he was 13 years old. And for those of you who do not know this, Tchaikovsky was gay and had to keep it hidden from the public. He had a miserable and loveless marriage, and committed suicide. But what a legacy of great music he left for posterity. Gay people are born gay, and we must accept this. At least the Supreme Court has recognized them and has given them the right to marry in all 50 states.
This went from not hating on a piano video to being gay is okay real quick
He is truly wonderful as was Horliono at 11, playing Beethoven at St Pancras Station...are they now the same age ?
Thomas Chan , BRAVÒ .!😄
Hahaha Lang Lang completely took over the whole performance
Its incredible how 1 note in chord can make huge diferent in sound... I start playing piano and for is abstraction but sounds amazing :P
Changing your whole style on the whim is really hard hes trying to account for Lang Lang's advice whilst playing insanely hard music
posted Thomas in my website blog
this kid is amazing. at that age i played row row row your boat
We all love you so much. You are os good with children.
Feel the space. Why did that make such a difference 😂 literally changed how it sounded completely
I wish my music teacher was like this.
And your teacher’s cost gonna be around $100k-$130k per lesson
AMAZING TALENT!!
So this was 2011 and the kid was 11 yrs old. Now it's 2018 and the kid should be 18 yrs old. What happened to him? There is no news about him since 2011. Did he burn out?
Bit young for this concerto, he doesn't have the depth of feeling and emotion, but hey, I couldn't do it so good luck xxxxx
果然郎桑气势很适合这种气场雄伟的曲子
Poor little boy, he really has a VERY good potention and talent, but 1st of Tchaik is not a good choice for small hands and children power...
That's exactly what I was thinking during the whole performance. Bad choice, also it's challenging to make a good interpratation even for older pianists.
Actually, you saw how big his hands were . . . and he's certainly not lacking too much power. It's more the musical interpretation I guess. I don't really think it's a bad choice for him, good experience fun piece sry for bda english.
Ye I agree with you mate the inspiration of the peice for this childs age is certainly good but the peice isnt a great choice for his hand size
Very good potention-XD
Anna Luis After he performs this as good and clearly ,he will be a perfect kid !!
Langlang seems to control himself not to blow up the upright and overwhelm the kid...
this is a master class and not a concert, a great teaching and learning experience, I 've attended some with equestrians and show jumping.
babsfocker I
Nice piece!
Master class is suppose to be learning from the master. As such critiquing is essential so one can improve. And you need to perform so the master teacher can point out your weak points. It is a one-on-one class.
Lang Lang is a fucking artist.
The room is too small for the sound of 2 pianos, makes it sound muddled. I think they could've put the microphones farther back to compensate.
Qué fue de Thomas Chan ?👏👏👏
8:24 Lang Lang is cute. He is a pretty nice man, very patient.
Wonder where is Thomas Chan today?
Great talent.Greeting from Sweden.
¡¡¡UN GENIO, Y OTRO PEQUEÑO GENIO!!!!
