Glad these notes are included. There are too many rumors saying that Syd was a babbling mess during these recording sessions, it's sort of dehumanizing the way a lot of journalists painted Syd as being completely gone just because he was having mental health problems.

'Warm shallow waters sweep shells'. This is so magnificently beautiful and poetic. The words dance and sing all on their own.

Most of Syd's songs I think are just fine the way they are. Some are perfect, like Dark Globe and Dominoes. Opel however, is such a fantastic tune that a full arrangement with other instruments would send the tune to a completely different level.

    • @bardofely
      @bardofely 8 месяцев назад

I agree, Syd's songs are fine without any additional instruments. His guitar playing works well for me even in the instrumental breaks when he is just strumming. I am not usually much of a fan of instrumental music being a singer-songwriter myself but Syd's work is different. It stands out as him. I also was much more of a a Pink Floyd fan when he was still with them.

Many don't understand this song, think it's a mess, that he's going off time repeatedly, but they don't understand that's the point. He did this on purpose, he didn't play like ordinary guitarists. Anyway, Syd and an acoustic felt much more dense than anyone else doing the same thing. This isn't just a song, it's a vivid painting, a scene so sharp that you can really tell how much of an artist he was

@@Valientlinkcan’t help but feel most of madcap was done on a clean electric, this was recorded in the same sessions, and has similar guitar sound to songs like “Love You”’s guitar sound on it

Probably David Gilmour because he released "Bob Dylan Blues" (an unreleased from the Madcap sessions), "Rhamadan" (an unreleased 20 minute jam from 1968 probably with Pink Floyd) on several compilations like "An Introduction to Syd Barrett" (2010) and "Wouldn't You Miss Me? : The Best of Syd Barrett" (2001).

@@nofficiel108iirc the rights to the solo stuff were held by EMI. Syd apparently sold them back to them upon leaving the music scene, only keeping his PF royalties. But who knows, I may be wrong and they gave them back to Syd/his fam? Either way you may be right and Gilmour may have the master tapes regardless, idk

Same. Some of the other takes from Madcap and Barrett that were released on Opel (the album) were surprisingly different from the official releases. I wonder if Opel (the song) was performed differently on take 6 (faster tempo, different vocal melody, different key?). I hope we get to hear it someday.

@@magiccat4316it is said that Opel would have went in instead of If It's In You (the one with the false start) or She Took a Long Cold Look, but that it got "accidentally" misplaced. Idk, considering how bad Pink Floyd were doing on the singles front (and even albums, arguably PF didn't do better than Piper until the 70s) and how management actually wanted to stick with Syd, I suspect foul play by Waters/Gilmour. Even if not, since others say they helped a lot (specially in the Barrett album, where Syd needed more help, and also Wright helped more), it's clear the band made great money making songs about him, perhaps showing their guilt there (then again, they are to be commended for all the early stuff re-releases such as Relics or Works that kept royalties coming to Syd). Regardless, RIP Syd.

On a distant shore, miles from land
Stands the ebony totem in ebony sand
A dream in a mist of grey...
    On a far distant shore...
    The pebble that stood alone
    And driftwood lies half buried
    Warm shallow waters sweep shells
    So the cockles shine...
    A bare winding carcass, stark
Shimmers as flies scoop up meat, an empty way...
    Dry tears...
    Crisp flax squeaks tall reeds
Make a circle of grey in a summer way, around man
    Stood on ground...
    I'm trying, I'm trying
To find you, to find you
    I'm living, I'm giving
To find you, To find you
    I'm living, I'm living

i have this song tattooed in the depths of my soul, and i very rarely listen to it, not bc i don't like it but bc of the helplessness of not being able to hug him very tightly when i feel that his voice breaks and i feel his sadness reflected through a surreal poem that transports me to that magical place that little by little fades but then i hug the pillow while my heart breaks into a thousand pieces falling into nostalgia 🥺♥️💔

A sad story. Syd was a talented, gifted young man. Unfortunately, he had the wrong friends. He was seduced with drugs. Drug addiction is an illness. During his two solo albums, with the help of David G, Syd continued to take drugs. A catastrophe. Psychiatry was not yet ready at that time. I am interested in how Syd lived with his illness. Unfortunately, there are no more books in Germany.

Recording april 1969. Interesting. well after he supposedly went mad. One of the most hauntingly beautiful songs ever made by an artist-poet. Anyone that fairly hears the oddly perfect rhythm of his guitar...combined with lyrics....can only see things one way. Syd was capable, gifted and timeless.

Syd recorded Terrapin on an an unplugged electric guitar that had a mic put in front of it. Thats how he got that sound with the pluctrum prominent.
Opel sounds like it was recorded the same way.
If only Gilmour and Wright had finished this instead of writing and trying to come up with songs in the studio like It is Obvious for the Barrett album when Syd already had all these classics songs written.
It is Obvious that Gilmour wanted to catch Syd as he was at that moment in time. Staying away from the old abandoned tracks and starting with a clean slate.
