We speak Spanish, but now I'm starting to write a bit of Dutch and she corrects me. I heard her speaking Dutch once, and I liked it. This is how my interest began. Well, "sorry hoor" is often used sarcastically as well, so you're better off saying things like "dat spijt me" or "pardon" or "mijn verontschuldigingen"... Depending on the situation, of course, and how polite exactly you're trying to be. Especially that last one will often be considered snobby. When in doubt, use "Wou je wat?", which is sure to get you either beat up, or have the person you're addressing awkwardly back away. Not an actual apology, but close enough. >:) Edit: Just plain "sorry" will do as well, as will "sorry meneer/mevrouw".
Haha, indeed. I do still think the "hoor" often kind of detracts from the apology. Adding "hoor" kind of implies that you're apologising as a matter of course, regardless of whether you're actually sorry. That's how I interpret it anyway. Not in all situations, but in many.

Thanks, yet "Sorry hoor" (which translates as: Excuse me) is in Dutch perfectly normal, polite and decent for apologizing.
