Steve Martin | Juggling | The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour

- In Steve Martin's first major television appearance on The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour in 1968, he shows off his juggling expertise.
The Smothers Brothers
The Smothers Brothers, Tom and Dick, are one of the most iconic comedy duos in the history of television. Tom and Dick began performing as a duo in the late 1950s, playing in coffeehouses and clubs in San Francisco. Their act consisted of music, comedy, and witty banter, which quickly gained them a following.
The Smothers Brothers became a household name in the late 1960s with their variety show, The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour. The show was groundbreaking in its approach to comedy, pushing the boundaries with political satire and social commentary. The show also featured up-and-coming musical acts, including The Doors and The Who, and introduced the world to comedians like Steve Martin and George Carlin.
The Smothers Brothers' irreverent style has made them a beloved and enduring force in American comedy.

@@stevetomblin9007
I thought the same thing of Leslie Nielson.
It is outstanding how, seemingly naturally (though I could be wrong), his hair just seems to have been wonderful his whole life. ESPECIALLY the grey/white. Honestly, receding hairline? Not a fan, only a Millennial (less than 40 years old) but I already got a bit of recession (hah, oh great, with an economic one on the way too to join my hair) but having all white hair? I think that'd make up for it, even if I ended up with full-on male pattern baldness with a chrome top and basically kickin' it Dr. Phil style.
I dunno, I just... don't really hold fear in getting old. Family man, hopefully grandfather someday, I will die and I dunno if it'll be at 60, 70, 80, or 90, but likely in the first half of that range. Before I die though, I hope to have children, at least one grandchild, and will have achieved getting slick white hair.
Helps that I'm a man. As a kid, I never understood, "Why is it rude to ask a woman her age?"
I later came to understand, biological clock, and menopause.
... I really wish I actually got more lessons about stuff when I was a kid instead of over and over and over being told "You'll understand when you're older."
Yeah, okay, because who needs to do some silly thing like 'parent' and 'teach your kids about life?' I learned so much from my childhood about how NOT to be a parent, it's mad, awful.
Juggling that proficiently while on TV takes big talent & confidence.
And the ability to juggle.
And a film camera.
And balls. I think you all forget the balls.
@@marvelcomix1 Yeah, you do have to have balls.

“You’re not laughing now!” I’m stealing this line and the delivery
Indeed, he did some stuff that you don't just do after a day of juggling. And much more than that, he did those things and talked while doing it and he made the audience laugh and gasp. That's the real magic.
The audience was coached. Professional laughers. Breaking the fourth wall was considered taboo for live comedy in the 20th century. Prerecorded comedy, not so much. The double-standard is confusing to some, and I'm sure finding out about it makes some generations of people cringe, as they're used to the concept of laugh tracks, but that's the way it was.
laughs are cheap... I'm going for gasps

I'm only a little envious because I was not even born at that point. But Ticketmaster is that old?!?!?
@guitarfan01 Yes, it is. They had a Ticket Office on our campus, and we actually printed out hard copy tickets there. It was cool. The customer would choose where they wanted to sit for whatever concerts we were selling, I'd punch it into the computer, hit print, and the connected printer would print out the hard copies. It was like an old-school theater ticket booth - very small... only enough room for one person (two if we were really busy). On concert nights, we also had access to the bigger ticket booths at Popejoy Hall, where up to 3 of us had a computer and printer. Oh my GAWD, it was the best job to have in college! First dibs for all the concerts wherever they were held in the city - some were on campus in the small venues, like Johnson Gym (where I saw Steve Martin & Earth Wind & Fire, amongst a few other greats) and Popejoy Hall (where I saw Patti La Belle & The Blubelles). But I also sold tickets for David Bowie, The Eagles, The Doobie Brothers, Tower of Power, Jerry Garcia, The Band, Chicago, Linda Ronstadt, Muddy Waters and just a whole bunch of other greats that played at The Pit in Albuquerque, which was where the UNM basketball team played their games. That stadium is huge, so the concerts were amazing. 🤩❤️ Anyway, I'm going all nostalgic now - and feeling quite old. 😅 Those were some very good times for me. Working for Ticketmaster as a work-study job on campus at UNM was one of my favorite jobs ever. My boss, Gary Golden, was the best guy in the world. I'll never forget him. He had the perfect last name - he had a heart made of gold... he was a wonderful man. 🥰😇
