The earliest instance I’m aware of is in 1981/2, when Peter Davison specifically asked to be credited as “The Doctor” rather than “Doctor Who,” which stuck for the rest of the classic series.
What probably clinched it as _the_ Fandom Berserk Button we know today, however, was David Tennant doing the same thing in 2005. And even then, Tennant still sometimes refers to the character as “Doctor Who” in interviews.

Yeah, I’m of the opinion that people take the whole “it’s THE DOCTOR not DOCTOR WHO!!!” thing _way_ too seriously. Especially given all the times the Doctor _was_ referred to as some variation of “Doctor Who” in-universe. WOTAN’s use of the name in _The War Machines_ is easy enough to explain as a simple error, but the Doctor calling _himself_ “Doktor von Wer” in _The Highlanders_ and “The Great Wizard QuiQuaeQuod”* in _The Dæmons,_ the same story where the Master calls himself “Magister,” also his usual name in Latin, are harder to explain away like that.
Personally I’m perfectly happy to accept the explanation offered in _World Enough and Time,_ that the Doctor called himself “Doctor Who” back at the Academy and later changed his mind, only to occasionally use it again when feeling nostalgic.
*Note also the Doctor referring to themselves with masculine, feminine and neutral pronouns in one breath here.
Sly snarky super fans love to say “Doctor Who” to the more buttoned up dullard fans... we know it riles them up and we enjoy it too....it’s transgressive. 😂

@@JoshSnares I still count the brig and Benton as companions, the first three years of 3rds tenure were Earth bound, and UNIT stories, and both the brig and Benton ha traveled in the TARDIS , only once, yes, but they did, and this what modern fans count as a companion, to try to justify Wilf, who will NEVER be a companion!

To be fair, it’s about time
Finally nice to see someone who doesn’t hate Clara. She’s definitely a not the best nor the worst. She’s pretty high up for me mainly as I love Jenna Coleman so much, but also I do enjoy the character as she’s unique. I completely agree with rose, I really don’t like her at all, she’s my least favourite in all the shows history imo. Great video as per! Keep it up :)

Sorry, Adric gets a better rating than that. He is the only companion I ever identified with - my age and into Maths - he was the target audience for Who, and he was a hero for sacrificing himself for others. It was cool that he could heal and I loved his costume and star.

Be honest, Josh, you just like Nyssa's outfit! Totally agree about Jamie though, so we can fight over him later! Seriously my favourite was Sarah-Jane. I was lucky enough to meet Lis a few times as an adult and she always replied to my letters when I was younger. Wept buckets when she passed away. I hate companion rankings. I dislike companion hate. But if all companion rankings were like this one, I'd change my mind so fast.
I know this is satire but I utterly loathe that one short story which pegged Barbara as a Tory. It's completely at odds with the views she expresses in The Reign Of Terror wherein she is the only one who vindicates the outcome of the French revolution. "Jacobin" has even been an insult levied by Tories against socialists so it is extremely unlikely she'd be one.

I'm so used to your voice being intelligent and talking about fairly well researched stuff, so satire or not this is mortifying to watch, which might make it even better/worse.
I think even if I didn't know that this was complete satire, I would still kind of like this guy.
Not only is he at least acknowledging the fact that Big Finish exists and is quite good, unlike a lot of people, but he demonstrates more knowledge of the classic series than most as well.
But then again, he put Dodo in the very cannon section, so... This guy is cancelled.
I like to watch this video when I need a good laugh. Which is a lot these days. Thank you
