I think the BBC should hire Josh to do a documentary about the show for the 60th. And yes I know that would take months or even a full year but... WHO knows?
Just an added point, in 2005, most of the UK still hadn't adopted HD yet and the vast majority of the population still had SD TV's. Given Doctor Who is a British production, it stands to reason that they would go with SD over HD as most of the home market for the show wouldn't be able to watch it in HD anyway.
It doesn't really make sense why they couldn't film in HD and do the effects in SD though. That's completely possible and would save them regret later.
@@occono3543 it was an added expense that the BBC would have needed to fund. Remember, the BBC operates on license payer money, not advertising revenue, so their budget is more limited than more commercial channels. I don't even think BBC even had HD broadcasting available as of 2005. It's short sighted in retrospect, but sadly that's the way the cookie crumbles.
@@supersonicsjm Were HD cameras really that much more expensive in 2005? Broadcasting/streaming may have been but there's lots of shows from that era on Bluray. Torchwood was filmed in HD from the start.
@@occono3543 Torchwood started a couple of years later, so it allowed time for the BBC to invest in HD. Doctor Who started in filming in 2004 and BBC didn't start using HD until 2006. It also took time for the BBC to move its programming over to HD, so not everything moved straight over to HD once they actually started using it.

Awesome as always Josh!! it felt like an eternity from 1989 onwards. They used to show the 1970s and 80s episodes at about 4 in the morning on the ABC in 1993 and we would set the timer on the Video to record them LOLs. good times
If I may add to your notes on the broadcast dates of the TV Movie, it was also shown 4 years later on the 1st of May 2000, on TV3 in Ireland which (according to broadwcast) is the only Doctor Who related thing they've ever aired
Thank you for these videos! I am preparing for work at this time. It’s helping make my week start off right (I’m in the us). I always learn something new!
Interesting that the story from The Sun (newspaper) from 1985 suggests scrapping Doctor Who was a 'plot' to hike up the licence fee (at 1:18). But, of course, the tabloids make it up as they go along!
Thanks so much for such a thoughtful and passionate presentation. Been watching The Doctor since Tom Baker and you've captured the mirth and irreverence very well.
It will be interesting to see if Russel T Davids can revive Doctor Who once more, during Chipnalls era viewership have dropped to an all time low, and several fans have disowned the show.
Damn you Josh Snares! Releasing a video right when I'm going to work, now I'll have to spend my whole day waiting to watch this masterpiece, the suspense is killing me already!
And to think modern Doctor Who is STILL running to this day, and with no signs of stopping anytime soon! What RTD, Gardner, Tranter, Young and Eccleston did for this silly little show is brilliant! Long Live Doctor Who! And I'm very excited to see what further developments will occur what with the rest of Flux, the specials next year and RTD back in 2023!
I've only came across your channel recently, but I just wanted to say how amazing your videos are. So comprehensive and engaging. Thank you for your Doctor Who content.
What's interesting about any documentary on the fall and rise of the series is that it compresses the ghastly wait that we seemed to go through, with misinformation, false trails, bizarre announcements, stories about John Cleese or Dudley Moore or Donald Sutherland or fucking Paul Daniels being cast... So the fact it came back not as a tabloid joke and with a serious actor at the helm seemed almost like a miracle. Even then, my first thought was of how so many of these esteemed thespians had signed up to be on the series and what it might mean for the reputation.
Love your documentaries, so well crafted. I think you should make something for the ABC or something. I'd love to see another video about the process of series one like this. Then each season with any behind the scenes info. Love to know stuff about when they changed doctors.
16 seconds in and I see a copy of Shadow of Avalon, the weirdest bit of doctor who I've ever digested, I could almost have convinced myself it was a fever dream that I just made up... That was such a well put together video, your documentaries are always so well polished, really enjoyed that.

This might be one of the best Doctor Who documentaries I’ve ever seen. Excellent editing and cuts! Everything is laid out so well and it’s so well organized!
Wonderful handling of the Roberts photo! Yes, very wonderful handling indeed, huhuhuhoo.
I love how you worked in the phrase "far from being all over" at the end of Chapter 1 xx
OK, thank you for that Gareth Roberts bit, that made my day. Also, I'd love to see a video of you ranting abotu Doctor Who video quality, that sounds like really good fun if you're inclined.
I hated including him, but it’s history.
I always love an excuse to rant! 😂
Well done Josh! Another awesome piece of work in both research and production. I always enjoy your content and I even learned a few new things about the series out of this video too. Thanks mate!
12:48 Yeeee!! Such a lovely surprise to hear my music! Another awesome documentary Josh! :D
Thank you once again for your amazing music! 💕💕
Stephen Fry as Dr. Who. Best thing I’ve heard today.
I love how stylish your documentaries are!! This is so fantastic!
This is genuinely one of the best channels on youtube
Josh snares documentaries are so high budget in my opinion great work
A magnificent video yet again, although is that a surprise at this point? Always so lovely to see all the effort you put in pay off so wonderfully!
Awesome Video Josh! Thanks for doing all these!
Doctor Who 2000 is such a cool title tho ngl, reminds me of Godzilla 2000: Millennium.
...
Doctor Who 2000: Millennium
Awesome as always Josh!! it felt like an eternity from 1989 onwards. They used to show the 1970s and 80s episodes at about 4 in the morning on the ABC in 1993 and we would set the timer on the Video to record them LOLs. good times
This video is something else! I love the orange lighting as well!
Maybe the grandfather & friends idea is what they're doing in the Big Finish 9th Doctor box set, Old Friends???
Ooh! Imagine that!
That "subtle" photo swipe was chef's kiss.
TaKe a drink every “i wonder if Russell would use that idea later on”
It will be interesting to see if Russel T Davids can revive Doctor Who once more, during Chipnalls era viewership have dropped to an all time low, and several fans have disowned the show.
Damn you Josh Snares! Releasing a video right when I'm going to work, now I'll have to spend my whole day waiting to watch this masterpiece, the suspense is killing me already!
Sorry! 😂
The "I wonder if Russell would use that idea later on" joke constantly got me
What's interesting about any documentary on the fall and rise of the series is that it compresses the ghastly wait that we seemed to go through, with misinformation, false trails, bizarre announcements, stories about John Cleese or Dudley Moore or Donald Sutherland or fucking Paul Daniels being cast... So the fact it came back not as a tabloid joke and with a serious actor at the helm seemed almost like a miracle. Even then, my first thought was of how so many of these esteemed thespians had signed up to be on the series and what it might mean for the reputation.
Another revolutionary high-quality documentary by our favourite Josh Snares!
Excellent video as usual, Josh! Really enjoyed :)
Really well explained. Loved this!
Sounds like in hindsight, Doctor Who needed the hiatus to GET GUD.
Love your documentaries, so well crafted. I think you should make something for the ABC or something. I'd love to see another video about the process of series one like this. Then each season with any behind the scenes info. Love to know stuff about when they changed doctors.
Such a wonderful video, great job!!!! Also love Ur hair
Love that casual flicking away of Roberts' polaroid
Great documentary, amazing eye for quality and detail as always 😁
16 seconds in and I see a copy of Shadow of Avalon, the weirdest bit of doctor who I've ever digested, I could almost have convinced myself it was a fever dream that I just made up...
That was such a well put together video, your documentaries are always so well polished, really enjoyed that.
I’ve never actually read it! I found it at a second hand store, and can never pass anything Doctor Who!
@@JoshSnares I borrowed it from my school library about 15 years ago, if I tried telling you what I remember of the story you'd think I was making it up, it's such an insane journey
Absolutely fantastic!
A great surprise to see this up already, and a perfect start to Monday morning as I upload the necessary caffeine.
Loved this video, keep making them whenever you want, nae pressure like.
I wander what happened next…
"Phased out in The Visitation" is putting it lightly lol
I wanted to sum it up in one sentence! 😂
I’d be here all day if I was talking the history of the Sonic! Haha
Another fabulous video Josh.
Great job, the final comment of the video taking forever is the first time I have laughed in a week as my partner passed away. Thank you, your videos have been helping me get through it
I’m sorry for your loss, I’m happy my videos have brought you some comfort 💕
@@JoshSnares a lot thank you so much
Absolutely loved this video, as always. It was really interesting hearing about some of the earlier proposals in the early 2000s.
Take a shot every time Josh said "I wonder if Russell would use that idea later on". Good luck.
I only say it three times, so make sure they’re big shots! 😂
Your documentaries are brilliant!!! the high quality, lighting and cinematography is just 👌
Thank you :)
International Doctor Who Treasure Josh Snares drops another smashing documentary. Loved it.
I could honestly watch a 2 hour video of you being salty over the RTD era SD format! xD But the entire doc was great Josh! Visually beautiful and interesting as always
lmao at the way josh says "DOCTOR WHO" so emphatically (in italics) every time
I didn’t notice until I started editing! 😂
20:53 wasnt in the bbc lol, top gear took ages to switch to HD too
Great video! Also, I like how you yeeted the Gareth Roberts photo off the table immediately like that 😂
he HAS to go
stop making quality videos and making me watch them all, i have no time left lol
Love your documentarys
BBC GIVE THIS GUY A JOB MAKING DOCUMENTARYS
I don’t say this to be hyperbolic but you are, by far, the best Doctor Who documentarian there is. (Doctorwhomentarian? No, I’ll stop.) The definite article, you might say! Your production quality is astounding and I find it criminal that you haven’t already got a million or more subs! Keep up the amazing work and best wishes from Wales!
And so, Russel T. Davies became showrunner. I wonder if he'd use that idea later on...
Every documentary on Doctor Who that you do is so informative and fantastic! Keep it up! Love to see more! 👌 🔥
I really enjoyed this - I began watching Dr Who in 1972 in Australia, learning about the background of how it all came to be ie the return of Dr Who I was totally enthralled. Im legally blind and have been wearing glasses all my life., I must say yours are the nicest frames I have ever seen. I was limited to what I could have due to how thick my lenses were.
Ahh i loved this !! Well done !!
we really need an adventure in space and time 2005 edition
Best documentary on the subject, detailed , well put together and engagingly presented
Just watched your missing episode omnibus- this is actually a good video to follow up with
