- CN 580 with CN 4139 GP9 switching in the Brantford Ont yard and then heading down Clarence Street. The track is so bad the plow actually digs into the dirt. People don't even seem to see the train and just continue what they are doing. You wonder how long they wll keep running before they derail or CN is forced to do some track work. Photos can be found at railfan.thegreb...
My mom's family came to Brantford from Scotland just after WW2. Going for a walk "uptown" as it was then called, one of my Aunt's happened to suddenly see some train come out of nowhere, in amongst the street traffic somewhere s. of Colborne St. She said if the Queen Mary had sailed by next she wouldn't have been as shocked. I'd no idea it's still happening almost 65 years later.
This train goes by where I live almost everyday....The interesting thing is, for years and years an SW1 switcher engine was used as the engine, ,the type where the hood slopes down toward the cab..it was awesome! Later in the 1990's or early 2000's an ALCO S1 / S2/S3 (not sure) switcher engine was used for a while with the straight, flat hood, that was neat too! This track also connected with the old TH&B line to Waterford and also with CNR line to Tillsonburg, now rail trail.....sad.......
Yes, they set the signals manual to prevent any right hand turns in front of the locomotive. They time out once the train clears.
I used to live right beside this track I'm 11 and LOVE trains I used to follow this train up from the park down to the tattoo shop sometimes further.
Been there almost a 100 years when it was probably a dirt road and a highly industrial area. A lot has chnaged and it is now retail and the casino. It will be gone in a couple years so not to worry.
If you want to see the best street running of them all, look up Oakland Jack London Square. They don't just run locals through those tracks, it is a full main line with dozens of passenger trains and several freights a day.
Damn when trains used that railroad I was like 10.
i live near brantford seen the train all my life local people don't realize it is something of interest driving down dahlousie street we just say whoops trains coming.
Down further on calrence st. you drive beside the train that always get my attention you think hey buddy share the road and then oh yeah its on tracks.
Wwow that is wild, the cars and trains being so close together on the streets like that, something I have never seen.
track is in terrible condition and only runs about 1/4 mile. city wants to widen the street and CN wants out as traffic is now down to about 6-8 cars per week.
That track is still in use today, it's going to a plastics processing plant called Ingenia Polymers. CN or the city couldn't remove the track or it would put the company with over 60 employees out of business.
Latest word I have is CN's participation ends Dec 31st. G&W will be taking over all switching and will add it to their work when they come into Brantford to lift cars. That usually happens in the middle of the night :-(
Wonderful!!!
An oddity in Canadian railroading, and there aren't enough of them.
Thanks for posting!!
All gone now. Serviced by Ingenia with a track mobile.
@@railpast What is a track mobile? Thanks.

I can hear trains shunting late at night, early morning, around 2 am, 3 am. I know this because it wakes me up!
I love videos like this where you have track road interface. Thanks for uploading it. Really interesting. It's a pity it'll be going as you said, I think it adds character to the area, really noisy though.
Better hurry then. Tracks will be gone by the end of summer and the train much sooner.
They only run Wednesday and usually between 11-1 depending on how much other work they have.
You hear trains switching in the Brantford yard but this is a day job and does not run at night. If you don't believe me, get out of bed and go to the yard and see for yourself..
Very cool to see the street running
Only place you can see it now is on RUclips as they don't run on that track anymore. Ingenia bought a trackmobile.
@@railpast still cool. i can see why though, an engine that big for only a few cars is a lot.
Sweet shots! I love this.
My girlfriend lives in Brantford, and I've seen these track on Google Maps (not the same obviously). They're old tracks, and they will be removed in the coming year or so. I didn't even know they were still in use lol
Yes, this is probably the last year of operation.
It's too bad that since CN is no longer leasing tracks to SOR. That they won't help switch the burford spur. I hope Ingenia is able to find a way to keep using the burford tracks.
They might be getting a 70 tonner soon.
@@railpast That would be fantastic and really that it is all the needed. Would Ingenia be allowed by CN to use the mainline or would CN have to still be involve?
@@Trains4Fun They need something. A trackmobile will not cut it in the winter. They can only go to the food market by the bridge. No access to CN mainline. Not even sure they have a railway operating license at this time which they will need.
Nice video! Thank you.
What did the man getting off the engine do?
Switch traffic signals to red? Are they on a timer? Apparently turned green before the train cleared the street.
I am from B.C.. We do not have anything like this at all. I think this is just the coolest thing.
Nice video and CN local action!
The sad thing is these types of lines are a dying breed here in Canada...There used to be one just like this in Niagra Falls which I'm pretty sure has been ripped out now, also one in Toronto on Lakeshore right by downtown which I don't think is even used anymore because it's rusted as hell....:(
Great Video Walter!
What an odd place to have railway tracks. They are almost up against the buildings. This doesn't look like February at all. No snow on the ground. It looks like September to me.
Very mild winter.
When have the trees lost their leaves in September, even in Ontario!
I have lived in Branford almost my entire life and I've never seen a train on those tracks, lol
I lived above Brant Loans........train goes by all the time...Wednesdays.......you could see my bathroom window, and my parking spot...lol
Railpast, I would say only part of that video was street running, the first set was sidewalk running.
Amazomg catch. What time did he start his treck on the Burford Sub.?
I'm super close to this and didn't even know this was a thing that happens, someone let me know when they plan on doing this again, I live in Hamilton
CN sold the track to Ingenia. They now use a trackmobile to move the cars.
Thats a shame its going to be abandoned, looks like a healthy cut of cars in tow, some shortlines live off less.
Excellent!!!
I remember scenes like this in Great Britain when i was a kid, sadly all gone now. I would love to see the terminus or where the line ends. Is it a mill or something? thank you sharing it
In another year, track will be gone so not a problem.
really.....track is still there...lol
I can understand not running big diesel locos on there anymore but why remove the line? It could make a decent tramway.
I like CN thank you for the video
Dave Bolyard
they don't run at night
Do you have any video of them shunting at night?
great video.
6:30 fffffssss I needed that far right lane!
so they are going to pull it out?
Nobody even looks at train. Its running on dirt. Is this still in service 2019?
Ties are buriied. Locomotives no longer run there but Ingenia interchanges cars with CN using a trackmobile now.
good catch
Don't step on the brakes if your speeding in town! Be cheaper to pay for lives then fixing the tracks.
Those tracks look pretty mangled.....
Cool Video
4:00 Watch out for the Train Grandpa! lol
Why don't they turn this into an LRT system?
Does anybody know if these tracks have been ripped out? or are they still in use. I thought maybe another shortline operator may have take over them by now. It's May 21 2016 now!
+TRAINS_4_FUN Tracks are still there and seem to be getting busier. Southern Ontario Railway, part of G&W took overt and run at least once a week, sometimes twice. Lat time they went down with 10 cars. I shot them a month a ago. ruclips.net/video/BWDflVVUisw/видео.html
There are still in its November 19, 2021
im trying to make this route on trainz simulator 12
Nice 👌😁
Lovely beast :D
Really thats a terable place to put railroad tracks at!
do they still do this?
No. Ingenia bought a trackmobile and now interchanges with CN at the top end. :-(
shes a beauty
I know where that is
Open tracks like that have no business downtown in any city look dangerous
relax.....my bedroom window was 6 feet away...see 3:00
more sidewalk running
I've lived in brantford for 11 years and have only seen a train once on these tracks and now its just all grass they never use it anymore and will derail it soon. It's a safety hazard and we have no money fix it.
Kyle, too bad you have no idea of what you are talking about. The train runs every Wednesday and there is no danger of a derailment at the speed they run. The line is owned by CN so it does not cost the city of Brantford any money in fact Brantford get a large chunk of change from CN as taxes. It is a part of history and it will be sad to see it go.Sorry you are not a railfan but this track is unique to Brantford and is part of Brantford's history.
+railpast This is the only reason I would like to goto brantford. Just to see this train come down the road in this manner. So Cool!!
Þhàñk for postingjìnģ
@steriogram007 Ive shot this train going down the burford spur like 10 times hahah
