Haole from Florida should be careful. There are very little of the population of people who speak it in the Hawaiian communities and there are charter schools which are hawaiian immersion, to which Hawaiian language is taught. So She is just ignorant of that fact and she should apologize. She a realtor. Some Locals who grew up here gonna know her name from this news and won’t want to do business with her. It’s a sensitive issue as Hawaiian history is sensitive and very much so. This is Hawai’i, it’s America too but this is an island with its own history. Haole lady should apologize at the very least and learn from it. Not all Hawaiians can speak it or understand, but there are communities out there and immersion schools that teach the Hawaiian language. It’s not dead, it’s very much alive.

So, I lived in Hawaii for over 20 plus years and I have heard Hawaiian spoken. From North shore to Waimanalo to Waianae and places in town. From family, friends, co-workers and even strangers. I will admit that Hawaiian is a niche language and currently is used in tourism, entertainment or for culture practices. However, Hawaiian can still evolve. Maybe it could be used in tech. I am mainly mad at her comment because it seems that the locales (and especially Native Hawaiians) have to always accommdated or comfrom to mainland people's values or ideas (especially the Haoles). I am afraid that in the near future that more foreigners (or people who do not respect the Hawaiian culture) will be the majority voice to suppress any of the Hawaiian culture practices unless it fit's their Hollywood idea of a "Hawaiian". If you take away the language, you take away the culture. Bytheway, usually when someone speaks Hawaiian they will usually translate it into English. Also, at 1:53, she said that she googled about Hawaiian language and that it says it's a dead language. I googled on Google, Duckduckgo and yahoo, they all say that Hawaiian is an endangered language. Totally different! Think before you speak. You may be free to speak your mind, but there is always a need of mutual respect. If that respect is violated, there will always be repercussions that follows. Aloha is always a two way street.

Please awaken my fellow Kanaka. Article XV, Section 4 established Hawaiian along with English as an official language (the judicial language) of the State of Hawaii, meaning that Olelo Hawaii is to be recognized within everything in our local government on the same level as English. This also means that within the local government every politician in office are supposed to understand BOTH Olelo and English, as both languages in this "state" are legally interchangeable without a translator. That is why in any government setting, a translator is not required. Since they don't understand Olelo, that honestly makes all ( besides who can both Olelo and speak English) unlawful within our local government.
