  • How to collect Moss, clean it, store it and keep the moss alive
    Harvesting different types of moss in a forest after a rainy night.
    - The best time for collecting moss is after a rainy day
    - Little Shaggy-moss
    - Place the moss in a container for transporting
    - Star Moss
    - Fern Moss
    - Plume Moss
    - Pixie Cup Lichen - this is Genus Cladonia
    - Star Moss
    - Collect dry leaves from the ground, you will need them later
    - You will need a transparent container with a lid for storing, soil or orchid mix
    - Put two layers of the soil (if you plan to keep the moss for a longer period, put pebbles first layer)
    - Put one layer of dry leaves
    - Now it’s time for cleaning the moss
    - Clean them one by one gently in a filtered water
    - Remove all branches and leaves
    - Place them in a container
    - Repeat the steps for all moss
    - Spray them well with filtered water
    - Put the lid and place the container in a bright place (avoid the direct sun)
    - To keep the moss healthy, spray them twice a week

    I just got sone pixie cups and am going to try to keep them (as well as other lichens and mosses) happy in a terrarium. I’m finding that while there is a TON of info on keeping moss alive in terrariums is a real struggle to find info on keeping lichens alive and thriving in a terrarium. If you have experience with this I’d love and tips you might have. You’d be filling a hole here on RUclips given how few videos there are on actually KEEPING lichens abs not just about them out in nature. Cheers!:-)

      Sorry for my late reply 🥹 I always keep mine in closed terrariums or containers. This spring I put them on my balcony under deep shade and for now doing good. I practice to change them the environment once they start changing the color. Hopefully helped, would like to know more of your experience 🙏🍃🤍

      I'm growing lichen sucessfully for over a year on a tree branch in my house. The branch is in a shady spot near a window, no direct light but it gets diffuse light. I mist it with water once a month or so. The lichen has taken over the branch and its getting huge.

      I only saw 3 identifications… pixie cup, lichen and star moss. In the beginning of the video you showed a hairy straggly type, some flat bright green moss without identifying those…. I am curious to the names of those varieties just like the other commenters. If you don’t know that’s okay to just say I am unsure of those varieties. No disrespect intended.
      I enjoyed watching and the music was pleasant. The video was excellent and relaxing.
      First time here and will check your content out.
      Thank you for your time and sharing your beautiful collection. Inspired to go outside, enjoy nature and collect moss!

    Thanks for sharing! Very useful information, do you run into issues with mold growing after storing for long periods of time?

    • @PlantHouseGarden
      @PlantHouseGarden  5 месяцев назад +1

      Thank you so much, I'm glad you liked my video! To avoid that, open the lid from time to time to let in fresh air. This can help prevent mold from forming. 💚🙏🌿

    Why are you cleaning the moss? I thought it was to remove insects, but that can't be the case if you aren't also cleaning the dry leaves.

    • @PlantHouseGarden
      @PlantHouseGarden  2 года назад

      I clean it because I use it later in terrariums, not only to remove insects, there are other dirties…

    Is it possible to propagate lichen?

    • @PlantHouseGarden
      @PlantHouseGarden  4 месяца назад

      Lichen can be propagated, but it's a bit different from propagating typical plants. It reproduces through spores or by breaking off fragments that can grow into new lichen. Propagating lichen can be challenging and requires specific conditions to grow successfully. Thanks for watching ♡
