  • Preparing, cleaning and storing moss for terrarium and other botanical projects
    This is a very simple process but an extremely important steps to prevent unwanted pests, hitchhikers and mold/fungal infections in your botanical projects.
    It involves removing twigs and dry/dead grass from the moss and rinsing it in distilled or RO water. Rinsing process is to be repeated a couple of times to get the moss as much free of soil and debris as possible. Once done the moss needs to be stored in specially prepared storage containers/boxes and placed under artificial lights for about 8 -10 hours of photoperiod everyday.

      I have always read that moss doesn't need fertilizer, as it extracts the nutrients it needs from the air. Double-check me, though. A lot of places that sell supplies for terrarium and vivarium supplies will advertise 'special' fertilizer for sale that is supposedly good for moss, but i think it might just be a way for them to make money.
      Most sources I've read say no fertilizer is needed for moss. That kind of makes sense to me, as moss will grow on rocks not just soil. Also grows on decomposing trees (wood), so you could probably find a piece of tree bark to put the moss on in the terrarium, although I'm not sure how you would clean that to eliminate pests and bacteria.

    I have only ever been able to collect small chunks of moss at a time, unlike the large sheet in this video, and so the only thing ive ever needed to wash off my moss has been the mud from underneath that comes up with the moss (as most moss i collect is growing on mud). Im not even entirely sure if jts necessary to wash such small amounts of mud off, is it? I end up breaking the moss apart even further when trying to wash it off, then it just looks like algae or seaweeed 😢

    Can you use ash instead of charcoal? I don't live in an area that is okay to make charcoal and I don't have the budget to buy it. Thank you for all of your amazing information, time, and dedication !

      @TheUrbanNemophilist  2 года назад

      Thank you. No, ash might not work. You can skip charcoal if you don’t have it.

    Can you either do a video, or talk about, what to do about pieces of moss that have would more or less embedded in the underside of it? Do you leave it? Remove some of it? All of it, leave it all?

      Sorry but I am not very clear on your query. Could you explain again.

      @@TheUrbanNemophilist no worries. So, some moss that I collect, maybe taken from a piece of rotting wood. And when I collect them, the wood on the bottom is more or less, in my own words, infused with the moss.
      And if I were to try to remove all of this wood, it starts to tear away at the moss itself.
      I apologize for my lack of clarity, thank you.
