"Weird" brain? Sandy, you have a unique, original brain. Rock on!

This is exactly what I've been looking for for years. I do a lot of coloring and have arthritis in my fingers so have learnt to adapt the position of a pencil to my boutonniere deformity. Very helpful! Thanks so much.

I quit counting the hand changes, I was just watching you draw. Wonderful examples. My grandson actually pinches the end and writes.

This is interesting … I’ve watched many artists just like you showing or teaching and a few of them have held their pencils in what I think was the dynamic quad or the lateral quad and I’ve thought to myself ‘oh my goodness will you hold the pencil properly!’ Then as I’ve watched them, like you, make the most amazing picture appear before my eyes I realized …. It’s all in either how you were taught or what you find more comfortable. I am old school, very old, the way you hold the pencil - that’s how I was taught for writing or drawing a gazillion years ago but I’ve now become way less critical of those who hold them differently and I focus on their art and not the mechanics.
Oh and I have no idea how many times you changed your hand position - lots 😁 … the fingers splayed i would say are for stability but they are not resting on the paper …. A very interesting video and yes that looks just like a hand holding a pencil 🥰

I have to say I still judge laterals in video, I can't watch, though the art is great, and I can cheer that part. ha!

I appreciate your weird art brain, Sandy! I counted about 8 different grips but things were moving pretty quickly in the video, plus I loved watching the actual drawing, so it's possible I miss counted. Fun topic!

This was great! No idea how many times you changed positions, too mesmerized by your magical art!! I do remember 60+ years ago my teachers saying over and over to use your whole arm while writing!! I’ve yet been able to achieve this! 🙄✍️

Interesting. Tripod mostly for drawing for me, was taught growing up that is the right way, and it was hard to learn a new way with needing a 40 degree angle with brush lettering.

I go back and forth, tripod drawing then the different 40 degree angle for lettering to clarify. I've seen some great art with really weird hand postitions which is so interesting to me.

A pencil grip for writing is different than holding a pencil for drawing. Drawing requires many positions to achieve different effects, writing involves only the thickness of line.

As a former 1st grade teacher, trying to teach those little ones how to hold a pencil correctly was like "pulling teeth" on most days. They get in this habit from 3 -4 years old and can't get out of it and wonder why I can't read their handwriting. Now with Chrome books, using a pencil is a thing of the past; however, not knowing how to write with a tool correctly is really a disadvantage to them. Great video!!!

Do their parents grip pencils that way? Where do the kids get that at such a young age?

@@SandyAllnock1 My personal experience here...most parents hold their pencils in the correct form. It was more of a focus when they were in school before the State Standards came out. There are so many standards to teach each year that holding a pencil correctly went to the wayside. Also, there are so many gaps in their learning standards, that every year (the teacher) usually has to go back and spend time reviewing what was missed. I'm not even mentioning time spent and wasted on behavior issues, outbursts and distractions. Most preschools are introducing pencils and crayons through scribbling and emergent writing (which is developmental). In most cases, the student is not be corrected due to frustration or lack of fine motor skills. Every child is different, develops skills differently and learns in a variety of strategies. I'm sure there are many other reason why children do not hold a pencil in the traditional way, but this is what I saw during my tenure and my personal experience in the elementary years.

I am old school tripod mostly. I change the distance according to the pencils. No idea how many positions you held your pencil. It doesn’t matter the picture is very nice.

I got so distracted watching your drawing develop that I lost track of your pencil grips. 😂

Who even knew there were names for different hand positions! As Priscilla Hauser (mother of Tole Painting) used to say, "there are many ways of right". So I guess whatever works is ok. Too many people get caught up in what is the right position instead of what works for them. Lost track of your hand changes - get too caught up in watching the drawing come to life! TFS

I think people who say that drawing hurts, their hand might benefit from trying a different position, but if people have a position that works for them, good on them! Use what works.

another wierd art though. I wonder if these pencil holding positions are the same for digital artists using Apple pencil and Procreate or a Wacom or Huion tablet and their respective pencils 🤔

I don’t know-I’ve also wondered about people who grew up riding in languages that are calligraphic instead of our letter forms…

  • @FernCurtis

Lol…I had to stop and start over because I initially thought you wanted us to count how many different grips you had used…how many times you changed the grip/position though, that one was harder to discern because you had sped the video up and I didn’t want to go back and start it all over again, at a slower speed. It was probably more than this, but I caught around 35 times that you changed positions. Nice looking hand though!
