We appreciate the detailed and honest feedback, Josh! This really means a lot to the team and we will be discussing the things you pointed out in this video. Thank you so much 💛🥰
I use one of the lochby tool rolls for my TSA safe tool kit. It's really nice being able to fold it multiple ways to make it fit in a bag better and it fits all my tools perfectly.
I bought those same earphones from soundcore for office use about 2 months ago, mostly for taking calls and I fell in love with them. I had never bought soundcore products but now I'm all in. Excellent recommendation.
The soundcore stuff has been consistently great for me! I’ve got a couple Bluetooth speakers and they’re equally impressive, nothing comes close in the price range that I’ve found
I still carry a Leatherman Juice from YEARS ago!! I don't like most SOG products, but I bought a "Power Plier" years ago that had the gear system and it worked great for leverage!
i always love seeing multitools and knives-this video has nice, close shots which will help a lot of folks figure out if they want them, too. i've had a few civivis with smooth action issues as well, its possible that you could also get in there and bend the lock bar a tiny bit back if you service the qsp penguin (looks like a liner lock with a tight detent).
Happy to hear the extra shots don’t go unnoticed! I love grabbing finer detail shots for things, probably my favorite part of the production process. I’ll have to see what I can do with that lock, thanks for the advice!
Soundcore gear is awesome quality and value 👍 Tool rolls are fantastic for organizing your EDC ! I've got a medium size AliExpress roll in my car and another for my house.
For utility knife imo milkwaukee fastback 6-in-1 model 1505 you cant go wrong. its $20ish instead of 15 but also comes with a double sided screwdriver, bottle opener, wire stripper, extra blade storage, belt clip, lanyard hole, and quick release for blade swapping. really rock solid utility blade
Great video. Just have an observation on the knife. I think the cut out near the thumb studs is a little deeper on the opposite side to the stud you used. Maybe it’s to access the liner lock easier. That might also make it easier to open in the right hand. Although if you are left handed I guess that won’t help. Keep up the great content.
I always appreciate the depth of these reviews , a lot while not getting too much into the weeds , also love the SOG multi tool , not much of a multi tool person but that ability to use bits is very cool and also love the dual design of the Lochby case ! Wonderful design! I noticed the limited access right off the bat before you mentioned it but still love the design.
Thanks for the kind words! I always do my best to balance the detail/brevity in the edits, I end up cutting sections sometimes because it seems too rambly, but I don’t want to move too quick either. The powerpint is really great for the size, totally agree on the pouch as well. The opening was my only nitpick, everything else (build, layout) is excellent
Absolutely! Been a fan of most everything soundcore puts out for a while now, had pretty low expectations for these being so cheap but they’re amazing for the price
that power pint is fantastic. the pliers are like real pliers in a small package. i love it. I always recommend a victorinox rambler for EDC - the philips screwdriver works surprsingly well, the scissors come in hand a ton and you can file a hangnail with the file. not new, but overlooked
Just recently picked up a victorinox tinker and have been really happy with it! Similar toolset to the rambler if I remember, definitely worth a look for most of us
Good video as usual! I appreciate hearing about EDC items at this price point. I have several of the Lochby products and I find them very well made. Also thanks for your input on the size of the elastic bands in the tool roll. I think your assessment is correct, it's really more appropriate for pens and writing instruments rather than tools.
Thanks! Been really happy with the quality of the lochby gear too, got a watch roll I’ll probably save for a more travel focused gear video. Would love maybe an XL version for bigger tools or something? Not necessarily a flaw with the current elastics, it just depends on the intended use

I bought qsp penguin with the brass handle, I've never regretted it, started my brass collection with it. The action pops amazingly so I think your one is maybe a rare dud, Good inspiring video. I carry leatherman free p4 but am considering power pint for a small, lighter easier to carry option. Cheers.
Yeah it seems like my penguin was a dud compared to the feedback everyone else is giving, saw the brass scales when I ordered and it looked great. Powerpint is solid! Don’t think it could permanently replace my wave+ but it’s great for the smaller size
The Torras looks cool, buy Im kinda in love with my ugreen one. Having the usb a slot allows me to charge my pixel watch, my pixel phone, and the battery using the c cord.
Totally get that! I’ve got some bigger batteries I love for the right occasion, I’m usually just needing to top off my phone day to day though. Ugreen has always been really great for me too
Great video as usual. I have the QSP Penguin. Good knife at a decent price. Stopped carrying it though as the blade stud would scrape my hand if I had to get something else in my pocket.
Thanks! Yeah the penguin wasn’t terrible or anything but I really hoped I found an amazing choice for $30. Still sticking to the mini praxis as the best under $50 rec but I’m glad I got to check it out
Lochby's notebooks are also really nice. Same size as fieldnotes, but I think the paper quality is a bit better; fieldnotes bleed through when I use my fountain pen, but lochby is always clean.
Glad to hear it! Probably going to grab a notebook sometime soon too, really impressed with the quality of the pouch and roll. Got a watch roll/case too I’m gonna be testing out soon also
It has phosphor bronze washers. My QSP wasn’t smooth either, but I added some KPL lightweight oil to each side of the pivot and the detent ball and now it is drop shut like my Civivi.
I’ve never encountered anything close to this quality around this price tbh. You can always customize the eq to suit your preferences a little better, might be worth testing and returning to Amazon if it’s too much?
@@joshfenn for sure. I went on their site and the odium is discontinued unfortunately. I live in Canada, so I got lucky that I found mine on a Canadian site
the thumb stud: its all technique, i have the penguin. the trick i your apply pressure toward the pivot point...force builds up and then suddenly it flies open...don't apply pressure the way you did in the video,..no force /pressure "builds up" that way.
Not that long ago I got a Casio Lineage watch. They don’t seem to be that common; I think they are only sold overseas but I got on a resale site for a really good price . It’s titanium with a sapphire glass.
The exceed designs ti-rant is a fantastic edc utility knife. It's so small and thin. I like the Milwaukee and fiskars ones in the shop, but they're too thick for edc.
Thanks! The watch is from VAER, the D5 tropic. Got a link towards the bottom of the video description, started linking my outfits since folks were asking pretty often. Made a video on it a few weeks back too if you’re interested! ruclips.net/video/27JwdmwOd1s/видео.html
Hey Josh, sorry to hear that about your Penguin knife. I just love my two Penguin knives. And they fly open like crazy. They also fall shut as smooth as can be. Hope you give the brand and/or the model a second try somewhen down the road. Thanks for your great videos. Greetings
IMHO the best Leatherman Squirt or Gerber Dime alternative is the Nextool Sailor Mini. Period 😉Has basically everything for such a small package.... Except for a file and tweezers. The last shortage can be easily compensate by picking up a small neodymium magnet and tweezers from Victorinox Classic :D
Omg you didn't put a Civivi paraxis or a paraxis mini on this list at 40 and 30 respectively. Opps spoke to soon lol! Yes the paracis mini at 30 is crazy good. Another one that should have been on the list is the Sanrenmu P801 at 30 bucks or a SRM/Sanrenmu 9201 in g10 and d2 for 30 or FRN and 8cr for 22 and these things have a axis like lock and run on PB washers and they are butter smooth and rock solid lock up with zero blade play and still fall shut. Also sad you didn't put a Byrd harrier 2 or Meadowlark 2 in this list they can be had now for about 25 bucks and they are absolutely unbeatable at that price. Fantastic geometry on the normal blade and the geometry on the wharny versions are insane! They are in 8cr but it's decently done and with the geometry they have from the grind and distal taper the knives will cut and cut even when the edge has started to go dull the geometry will keep it cutting. They have rock solid lock up with the mid back lock, the actions are very smooth and the blade will drop when pushing the lock release so it's easy to close one handed. The Penguin is a value at 28-36 bucks depending on the scale material. I've had like 8 of them and everyone of them break in and have a beautiful Washer action.. super smooth and free feeling with little to no blade play. The times I've handled a customers knife sent in for a sharpening and they have had action issues every single time it's been one of two things either the Teflon washer isn't there in between the PB washer and the blades washer running surface or one or both of the Teflon washers is bunch up amd torn and causing binding. Most times I've seen it it's been the Teflon washers being bunched up because it's torn and only one or two times because the Teflon washer(s) was missing. Those little thin Teflon washers are incredibly important in the Penguin if you want to have the buttery smooth action that they are known for. Another absolutely banging knife for the money is the CJRB Pyrite the FRN and RPM9 spray formed steel go for 29.99 and they are unbelievable good for that and the g10 or micarta ones are typically around 45. The Pyrite Alt is the best one in my opinion as it's the modified wharny blade style. Super thin blade stock and comes down to around 14thou behind the edge so it's an absolute laser beam of a slicer and CJRB has their button lock action dialed in crazy good. The CJRB Hectare is a damn good full size 50 dollar edc knife as is the CJRB Prado (I call it the 45 dollar bugout killer, it's really a damn good model) the Prado comes down to around 12-13thou behind the edge so it's a laser beam as well because of a 3mm spine and a nice tall full flat grind taper off to pretty dang thin behind the edge. Ahhh crap another one I just thought about that's a total banger and what I consider the single best 40 and under knife you can buy. The Kubey Nova, it's a full size knife, well done D2 (kubey consistently puts out d2 that's got a good heat treat and running it at a proper hardness. Most I've tested at in the mid 61s and you will see a 62hrc one every now and again) and the design overall is just crazy good and makes for a fantastic full size edc. Great blade shape and damn good geometry (around 11thou behind the edge) they are normally 40 bucks but you can get them on White mountain knives when they have the 25% of kubeys (they have it all the tjme) and stack a 10% off yoytubers cost takes it 40 to 27 dollars and free shipping and no tax if you live outside the state they are in. The kubey Drake is also another banger that is 40 dollars but can be gotten for 27 as well. It's crazy how well those knives are done to think that it can be sold at 27 shipped and still make money. They are every bit as well done as any 50-75 dollar kizer or civivi and the D2 kubey puts out is pretty much the best coming out of china in the budget knife realm. I have cut tested a bunch of kubey d2 models and they consistently finish above all the other large china companies doing d2 knives. They out cut your average QSP, Sencut, Civivi etc etc by about 20% (test is from hair whittling starting edge cutting card board until it will no longer clean slice a sheet of magazine paper across the grain) and on the sharpening stones Kubey done D2 is always a pleasure to sharpen! No sticky gummy foil burrs from to much retained austenite so the heat treat is solid as is the HRC at mid 61s typically. Sharpening can tell you a whole lot about the quality of heat treat a blade has. Well done heat treats sharpen so nicely and respond so well to the abrasives... overall I think kubey Is doing the best knives in the 30-50 normal cost range and they are absolutely killing it with the premium stuff in full Ti and S90v for like 150 bucks or fill titanium and 14c28n for 100 bucks... just think about how great a deal that is, a full Titanium frame lock and well done 14c28n for 100 bucks and they can be had when WMK runs the sells for 65 dollars shipped!!! Excellent action, rock solid build and butter smooth. I won't but premium steel knives from any china manufacturer EXCEPT Kubry, I have their s90v, s30v, m390, Aus10, D2 and multiple pieces from them in each of those steels and every piece has been very well done in heat treat quality and the HRC will be in the upper end of the recommend range and not at the lower end of the recommended range like pretty much every other china knife company does. Out of the 3 s90v knives I've had Rockwell tested they was all in the mid 60.x and on the s30v 2 knives from them tested and they was both low 60.x and on the M390 3 knives tested in it and they was all in the high 60.x... the d2 in the mid 61.x, aus10 was in the high 60.x and the 14c that I've had 7 knives in it from them tested and they are ranged between 59.7 and 61. I don't buy many budget knives anymore because they give me no enjoyment anymore but I still buy kubey budget models from time to time and I literally have a rule that I will not buy any premium powder steel knives for any china company but kubey is the one exception to that rule I have no problem buying premium steels from them because I know it will be good. I'm someone that's in the performance of the knife as a cutting tool. I don't fidget with knives so that doesn't matter to much so long as the knife is smooth on the open and close with no tight spots and most importantly no blade play and kubey knocks it out the part in those areas and that's about 20% of the knife to me, the other 80% is in how well the steel is done and how nice of a sharpening experience will it be. If they got the heat treat done great and the blade shape and geometry is good and the steel is run at the upper range of the recommended hrc I can over look every thing else even ergonomics. Kubey is Definitely doing crazy good work for crazy great prices and wjth excellent customer service (I've broken a couple pocket clips on their knives, like 2 or 3 spring clips and 2 ti milled clips and didn't ever charge me a dime) they are always friendly and ready to help with just a email or inst@ PM.. got a Ti and s90v Drake like 2 years ago and when it got to me one of the threaded posts that sit in the ti back spacers was stripped. I emailed them and simply asked for a replaced me threaded rod/standoff and they said no problem. About a week later I open my main box and there is a package from them that was like a 9x3X2 inch and I was like why would they send this big a box for a tiny threaded tube.. opened the box and there was 4 of the threaded rods and 2 full sets of hardware and a brand new titanium and s90v Drake with a note to just keep the other and here's the replacement threaded rods... I don't praise any china company (except Kubey) but when they do a good job they do a good job and kubey is not only doing a good job they are doing a great job so they are gonna get praise so long as they are doing such great work and changing the very fair prices.
This might be the longest comment I’ve ever received! Appreciate all the good recs and detail, making some notes for a few to check out in the coming weeks and months
Skimming through this video I saw the Gerber utility knife and had to say that I was really put off by the ergonomics and fitment. Especially when workpro has a fun, flippy one for slightly cheaper with slightly nicer hand feel.
I bought soundcore liberty 4’s when AirPod pros broke. Figured as soon as latest one came out I’d buy and ditch these. Well of course Apple hasn’t come through and now guess what? Now I don’t want or need them. These liberty 4’s are amazing!
Looks good! Not a fan of nylon for most digital Casios but it works for the analog models. Not a big fan of the faux leather accents though, I think it cheapens the overall look.
Good to know about sencut! Makes sense that they’re filling the gap with something else after shifting the civivi price points up. That could explain my qsp issues, I ordered from Amazon.
Do you know of any good refurbished gear that you could recomend? I ask because a while ago i got these linkbud S earbuds for like $70 on ebay refurbished and thought what nifty items could be in the refurbished section that definetly are worth it.
Refurb and used items are always a great way to save in most categories! Nothing specific but always good to check around before making any purchases to see if some money can be saved
@@joshfennYeah, I have the standard Pyrite and am very happy with it. Miguron do some really nice knives for under $50. I have the Moyarl. Nice design, 14C28N steel rather than the D2 that you find on so many budget options and nice action too. It was the first I owned that I could do the reverse flick on, so I could finally feel like one of those knife guys!
@@joshfenn np. If possible try to get the v1 with the bronze washers. The V2 have the ball bearings and slightly better action, but ball bearings is a pain in the ass to maintain in comparison.
@joshfenn there's also a thinner one but out of stock for usbc. left lightning cable. i think it was 6000mah, 4mm. it was said to be using silicon carbon battery gen 2. we have gen 3 now for honor magic v3 phone.
Moft’s faux/plastic leather looks and feels nice but it is not durable at all. I dropped my phone outside once and it got scratched/chipped to shreds. Very disappointing.
When it comes to this style of EDC videos, it's basically the Home Shopping Network, if we're being honest. And that's not a mark against you, Josh, I enjoyed the video but I do find it rather awkward when people are expecting it to be... NOT that. Like, would you ever tune into ESPN for your local weather?! No offense, Chancellor, maybe you meant something else by "inorganic" but taken on its face it just sounds like dumb trolling.
I prefer that orientation for most of mine actually, usually more versatile for usage while clipping to things like hats. Too big for a hat in this case but you get the idea…
@@joshfenn Nothing wrong with fanny packs, just hate this modern trend of wearing them over the shoulder and pretending that they aren't just that. "This is the company brand 2L sling bag!" No, that is Dwayne the Rock Johnson's favorite mid 90's accessory. I have a motorcycle thigh pouch that I hang from my belt instead using duty clips. It looks more like a carpenters pouch, but for all intents and purposes is in fact... A fanny pack. IDK, it just bugs me seeing people wearing these things and acting like putting it over your shoulder isn't just a cope.
I can’t really wrap my head around why other peoples clothes/accessories could bother someone so much, doesn’t seem like a big deal at all. Language, and trends, change over time. Why fuss over it?
@@joshfenn It has no bearing on me or my life. I am not bothered by people wearing these things, I just hate when people try to relabel them in an attempt to protect their masculinity. In my eyes anyone wearing a fanny pack strapped to their chest screams one of two things to me. A) You are trying to hard to avoid the stigma of a fanny pack, so you have opted for a less practical method of wearing it. B) You are concealed carrying and think that this is somehow discrete. (It is not.) If you like wearing the fanny pack then you should go for it! I am in my 30s and married. I have not cared about being fashionable in almost a decade. As I said earlier I too wear a fanny pack of sorts. But, don't call it a sling when we all know what it actually is. I have a sling pack that I carry for work every day (5.11's LV10 Med Sling). I work in IT and this bag has a ton of elastic straps on the inside that make it fantastic for carrying around cables. The difference is it is an ACTUAL sling bag, designed ergonomically to be worn as a back pack that can be swung around to the front for easy access. They also sell a Fanny Pack in the same series of bags (The LV6). It is in fact labeled as such, a fanny pack. Ultimately my issue isn't with anyone wearing a useful bag. I do think it is a bit silly to opt for an objectively worse position, but again you do you. But let's be real here. It is a fanny pack, and calling it anything else is being dishonest with YOURSELF.
Firstly, I like your video, and I like the products you are suggesting and using. But lets be real, sling bags are pretty much a man's version of a women's handbag. 😂 Great video, keep it up mate!
I’ve got no concerns for my masculinity wearing a bag, I’d call it a purse if I had to and be very comfortable with myself. Glad you enjoyed the video though, appreciate the support
The canvas pouch isn’t really since it doesn’t have any straps to carry it but the sling bag is I guess? Not really specific for men but similar to a purse or any other sling bag

Hi...I like your desk mat. ..Can you please mention the brand name?
The one in front of me filming is from Alvin, had it for a few years and it’s been great! amzn.to/3YQUgO6
Thanks Josh
Happy to share, thanks for the support!
the thumb stud: its all technique, i have the penguin. the trick i your apply pressure toward the pivot point...force builds up and then suddenly it flies open...don't apply pressure the way you did in the video,..no force /pressure "builds up" that way.
Appreciate the insight!
Not that long ago I got a Casio Lineage watch. They don’t seem to be that common; I think they are only sold overseas but I got on a resale site for a really good price . It’s titanium with a sapphire glass.
That sounds awesome! Didn’t know they offered any higher end specs like this
The exceed designs ti-rant is a fantastic edc utility knife. It's so small and thin. I like the Milwaukee and fiskars ones in the shop, but they're too thick for edc.
I’ll have to check it out, thanks for the rec!
Great video, Josh. What watch are you wearing? I know it wasn’t the subject for the video but it looks nice.
Greetings
Definitely haven’t written them off or anything, I’ll be sure to give a different model another shot sometime!
Haven’t seen of that one, definitely making a note. Thanks for the rec!
I've used the Gerber EAB lite as a minimalist money clip. Just my ID, credit card and 2 $20:bills.
Great idea!
Skimming through this video I saw the Gerber utility knife and had to say that I was really put off by the ergonomics and fitment. Especially when workpro has a fun, flippy one for slightly cheaper with slightly nicer hand feel.
I’ll have to check that one out!
Is that sling bag 2:24 a faraday cage?
It’s RFID blocking but not a full faraday as far as I know
It should be a crime that Casio doesn’t make the Duro in 38mm. 44mm is almost laughable to me. Such a nice watch wasted with the size they chose.
Would love a smaller option for the duro, I ended up sending it back after filming just because the size was way too much for my wrist.
I bought soundcore liberty 4’s when AirPod pros broke. Figured as soon as latest one came out I’d buy and ditch these. Well of course Apple hasn’t come through and now guess what? Now I don’t want or need them. These liberty 4’s are amazing!
I’ve had the liberty 4 nc’s for a while - they’re great!
Quality video
Thanks so much for the support!
Nah I got a mediocre qsp penguin too. Returned it. Got a mini praxis and im much happier.
The mini praxis is so great!
What’s you thoughts on the Casio FT500WC-3BVCF Men's Forester Sport Watch with Nylon Band? I like cloth/canvas verse plastic?
Looks good! Not a fan of nylon for most digital Casios but it works for the analog models. Not a big fan of the faux leather accents though, I think it cheapens the overall look.
Sencut is taking over Civivi's entry level - same parent company (Sencut
Good to know about sencut! Makes sense that they’re filling the gap with something else after shifting the civivi price points up. That could explain my qsp issues, I ordered from Amazon.
Excellent
Thanks for the support!
Knife - Kizer Amicus. Great for $39
Noted, thanks for the rec!
Pyrite Lite is the best $30 knife on the planet.
Making a note to check it out, thanks for the rec!
When did they rebrand fanny packs as sling bags?
Probably around 10-12 years ago? Great rebrand haha, similar to everyone loving ‘slides’ now
Qsp parrot would be a better (and cheaper) option vs the penguin.
I’ll have to check it out, thanks for the rec!
@@joshfenn np. If possible try to get the v1 with the bronze washers. The V2 have the ball bearings and slightly better action, but ball bearings is a pain in the ass to maintain in comparison.
I have an old version before lochby they called themselves bond gear. Same venture but black nylon. New design is better material.
Saw on their site that they had rebranded a while back. Seems like a good move, I think the waxed canvas is probably the main selling point for me
thinnest is 7.9mm I've seen. it can be thinner if its silicon carbon battery with aircraft grade material.
Which one came in at 7.9? I’d love to check it out!
jerx ja-01
it has wireless charging too
@joshfenn
there's also a thinner one but out of stock for usbc. left lightning cable. i think it was 6000mah, 4mm. it was said to be using silicon carbon battery gen 2. we have gen 3 now for honor magic v3 phone.
Huh I can’t seem to find it anywhere. Maybe not in the USA or something?
@@joshfenn nope. from china. silicon carbon battery is from china. i can't type in the merchant website. it will be removed in this reply
Moft’s faux/plastic leather looks and feels nice but it is not durable at all. I dropped my phone outside once and it got scratched/chipped to shreds. Very disappointing.
It’s held up well for me! I’m usually pretty gentle on my gear though. It’d be great to see real leather versions sometime down the road
Wubben is cool but for 10 dollars i can get a boruit v20 and is smaller and more useful
Looks nice! Very different lights with different features though, just depends on your preference
5:07 that’s what she said
Hahaha
Drop of oil on the detent ball should fix the knife.
Thanks for the tip!
Sold my QSP Penguin, was disappointed by the action.
Yeah it seems a bit hit or miss based on the comments around here, too bad it wasn’t more consistent.
can anyone share the moft magsafe notepad link?
It’s right at the top of the video description!
Something about this list feels inorganic.
Not sure exactly what you mean, but always trying my best to improve the videos around here.
Why would they ever make a flashlight where the clip makes it so the lens is up in your pocket.. dumb..
I prefer that orientation for most of mine actually, usually more versatile for usage while clipping to things like hats. Too big for a hat in this case but you get the idea…
@joshfenn for sure! I just have dozens of Cary lights with lenses scratched.. my diagnoses was carrying lens down if it's a carry light with a clip.
Just because you guys keep throwing your fanny packs over your shoulder doesn't make it NOT a fanny pack.
What’s wrong with fanny packs?
(It is not.)
If you like wearing the fanny pack then you should go for it!
My penguin has great action too bad u got a dud
That’s what I figured after seeing so much praise for it
Firstly, I like your video, and I like the products you are suggesting and using.
The EDC pouch is basically a man-purse.. right?
The canvas pouch isn’t really since it doesn’t have any straps to carry it but the sling bag is I guess? Not really specific for men but similar to a purse or any other sling bag
Those Lochby items are not under 50 dollars. They are 50 dollars.
Comes in at $49 from what I see, still counts lol
Nothing significant
Any better recs I should check out?
@@joshfenn Boruit flashlights maybe?
