The TiVo Roamio is hands-down the best DVR for recording over-the-air TV, but its excellence comes at a great cost.

Hardware price is doable, but subscription fee price is ridiculous. Your just basically reducing the price of your "cable" bill not eliminating it as you are still paying a fee but now to TiVo.

Has this guy never heard of silicon dust's HDHomeRun Prime? When I use it with Windows Media Center I don't have to pay any DVR subscription fees at all AND with MCEBuddy, I can do whatever I want with my recordings: share, copy, transfer to iPad, etc

So not supporting Amazon Prime Videos is a deal breaker for me... is this a permanent thing or something that's likely to be fixed with time??

Is there any way for one of these tivo DVR's to show live and recorded content on all the tv's in my house from one device?

I though this didn't work with cable subscription?

  • @chadergeist

How can you get away from cable subscriptions? You have to have cable to watch Tivo through. You have to select your package, you have to pay a $25 a month HD fee. So you are not really saving any money. By the time you pay for your package and HD fee you have to pay $12 a month for Tivo or just a $500 lifetime fee.

chadergeist82 the TiVo Roamio OTA works with channels you can pick up via antenna. right now through 11/28 the sale price is 199 and includes a free lifetime subscription plan.

I'd rather just build a small and cheap media PC to handle this and other things.

ok i look and look and i cannot find a DVR thats for anteena that does not cost a monthly bill they all want you to pay something by month, i say go back to the old VCR/VHS and record the dam thing, i mean i am trying to get away from paying tv i do not want a monthly bill i just want to by a DVR for a reasonable price a one time deal and be done with it, and not a crazy price for it thats stupid, after that dish and direct tv and cable can go to hell they are to high i make good money but i do not like being rip off either

Oh come on you are missing a key feature of the TIVO. the auto download. At night my CNET videos download automagically and they sit right next to my TV shows just like any other tv show. Awesome.

I totally disagree with you on the so called intuitive interface. Just the opposite. Whereas Directv is awesome and intuitive, I did drop Directv and went to TiVo Roamio OTA. So far, not impressed.

Im so confused. Most of this stuff it records over the air can be watched on hulu anyway.. so you are almost literally paying tivo to give it to you twice.. GREAT USE OF MONEY! Reminds me of video streaming on Xbox 360.

No many prime time TV shows won't see the light of day for at least a year. What about sporting events or any other live events for that matter. I agree that internet streaming is the future. But for many, watching on the big screen is still how they want their content delivered. This is especially true for older people. The market for this kind of device will grow. You better believe it. Dish network just increased their prices another 12 percent. This is a yearly ritual.
Plus you have to remember that Hulu bombards you with advertising. This solution has one of the best commercial skip features found on a DVR. This alone is worth the price of admission for many.

How dare thy call it Raomio. Thy shall not steal thee name of Romeo.

Undergoing Changes Roamio refers to the roaming ota-over the air, airwaves. Romeo is a Shakespeare character. Thou hast misrepresented a theft by a pun for intended fun. I sayeth unto thee, when thou sayeth a jest, be fair with thoust tongue and light of heart. For I bear you only truth and not to bear destruction of the fun of your pun. I applaud you for your wit, done in fine art. Now sit up straight and please don't fart! -Knightstown Commoner.
